GAME NOTES

OPENING TIP

St. Bonaventure looks to bounce back from its first conference loss of the season, 73-68, at Saint Louis on Wednesday night. The Bonnies battled back from 16 points down with 6:10 to play and got within three in the final minute before the Billikens held on. That snapped what was an eight-game winning streak for the Bonnies, their longest since 2018.

STARTING FIVE

• Chance Moore recorded his fourth double-double of the season Wednesday night with 23 points and 10 rebounds. He had been held to single-digit scoring in each of the first two Atlantic 10 games, the only time he has not scored in double figures in consecutive games this year.

• The Bonnies have held a lead in 35+ minutes of 11 of the 16 games this season. Bona had not trailed by more than three since Nov. 29 vs. Northern Iowa prior to Wednesday’s game at SLU. The 16-point lead for the Billikens in the second half is the largest deficit faced by the Bonnies this year.

• Noel Brown has tallied double-figure scoring in six straight games, double his previous high from the first four seasons of his collegiate career.

• A win Saturday would give the Bonnies a 3-1 start to Atlantic 10 play for the first time since the 2021-22 season. The Bonnies have started 3-1 or better through the first four games of A-10 play four times during the Mark Schmidt era.

• The Bonnies stood No. 58 in the NCAA NET rankings as of Thursday, the highest standing for any Atlantic 10 team.

TRENDING NUMBERS

13 – The Bonnies are committing only 13 fouls per game which ranks 10th nationally for fewest fouls per contest.

14 – As of Thursday, the Bonnies were one of 10 teams nationally to score 14 or more victories this season. Only one team in the country – Utah State, who the Bonnies battled in a 72-67 setback on Thanksgiving in the ESPN NIT Tip-Off – has more wins (15).

38 – Melvin Council Jr. has 38 steals on the season, most among all A-10 players and 12th nationally.

50% – Noel Brown went 5-11 from the floor in last Saturday’s win at Fordham. It was the only time all season he has shot under 50% in a single game. Brown is shooting over 63% for the season, best among all qualified A-10 players and 11th nationally.

+208 – SBU has had power in the paint so far: Bona’s is +208 in paint scoring this year and has held a plus paint margin in all contests. SBU scored a season-high 48 paint points in the win over VCU Dec. 31.

GAME NOTES

HONORING THE 1968 ST. BONAVENTURE MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM

The 1967-68 St. Bonaventure men's basketball team, still the only Bonnies team to go undefeated in a regular season, will be honored Jan. 11 on campus. The team will be recognized during today’s game against La Salle. In addition, there will be a post-game reception in the Hall of Fame Room for the team that is open to the public.

Members of that team who are confirmed to attend are head coach Larry Weise, Jim Satalin, Billy Kalbaugh, Gene Fahey, Mike Kull, Vinny Martin, Dick

Ulaszewicz, and team manager Art Roberts. Other members of the team included the late Bob Lanier, Bona's All-America center and Basketball Hall of Fame member, Bill Butler, John Hayes, Jim Gagnier and Pete Wisniowski. Lanier, Butler, Kalbaugh, Satalin, Hayes and Weise, as well as team trainer Dick Gigliotti, are all members of the St. Bonaventure Athletics Hall of Fame.

Led by Lanier, who was a sophomore that season, the Bonnies went 22-0 in the regular season. Their high-powered offense averaged 85 points per game and St. Bonaventure was ranked as high as No. 3 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. Bona's then topped Boston College in its first NCAA Tournament game but fell to North Carolina in the next round and to Columbia in a consolation game to end the year 23-2.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

The GoBonnies.com Student-Athletes of the Week presented by CPL are women’s basketball freshman Zoe Shaw and men’s basketball senior Melvin Council Jr.

Zoe Shaw averaged 15.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists over three games while shooting 45.7 percent from the floor and 52.9 percent from beyond the arc.

Last Thursday against Rhode Island, Shaw netted a career-high 17 points to go along with three rebounds, making 5-of-8 shots from three-point range.

In Sunday’s matchup on the road at George Mason, Shaw chipped in 12 points and five rebounds on a 4-for-8 shooting effort.

Shaw was key in the Bonnies comeback victory over Saint Louis Wednesday night, matching her careerhigh of 17 points, including the game-tying 3-pointer with 34 seconds left in the game.

A Melbourne, Australia native, Shaw ranks first among Atlantic 10 freshmen during conference play in scoring (14.0 ppg) and minutes per game (35.7 mpg) while ranking third among A-10 freshmen in threepoint shooting percentage (52.4 percent).

The Bonnies are back in action Sunday, Jan. 12 when they host Massachusetts.

Council was honored as both the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and one of five National Players of the Week by the United Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) earlier this week.

He recorded 22.0 points, 6.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game in a pair of wins by the Bonnies this past week to begin conference play.

Each week, the USBWA highlights five Division I players of the week. This week, Council earned selection along with Cooper Flagg of Duke, Chaz Lanier of Tennessee, Leo Colimerio of Queens and Malik Thomas of San Francisco.

Council did it all in his first two Atlantic 10 games, first delivering heroics with a game-winning layup vs. VCU on Dec. 31 as part of a 20-point performance.

BEHIND THE BONNIES

“Behind The Bonnies” is a GoBonnies.com feature series where we get to know student-athletes at St. Bonaventure University. In this edition, we meet sophomore Jonah Hinton.

Jonah Hinton has been a key to the Bonnies' strong start this season.

The Chicago native has averaged over eight points per game for the year and has seen his role expand after moving into the starting lineup in mid-December.

To begin Atlantic 10 play, he scored new career highs in back-to-back games, first with 16 points in a win over VCU Dec. 31 before tallying new Division I bests in both points (17) and rebounds (7) in a win at Fordham Jan. 4. He’s posted double figures in seven games so far this season. He joined the Bonnies after a standout campaign last season at Panola College.

At Panola, Hinton started all 34 games where he averaged 14.2 points, 3.2 assists and 2.1 rebounds per outing. Hinton also connected on 40 percent of his three-pointers (85-214). He helped the squad there to a Top 20 national ranking and a spot in the second round of the NJCAA national tournament. In his high school days, he was his conference’s Player of the Year while at Naperville Central (Ill.) and he posted a 3.8 GPA in the classroom.
