2024-25 george mason patriots
St. Bonaventure returns home to the Reilly Center Tuesday night, looking to cool off redhot George Mason which enters the game owning first place in the Atlantic 10 standings following a 5-1 open to conference play.
STARTING FIVE
• Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt enters Tuesday's game with 399 career victories as a Division I head coach. He has scored 317 of those wins leading Bona's program.
• St. Bonaventure snapped a two-game losing skid with a 63-49 win over Richmond on last Wednesday night in the last action for the Bonnies at the Reilly Center. The Bonnies got back to basics vs. the Spiders – SBU started the season 14-1 while rising to the top-10 nationally in scoring defense by allowing only 59.6 points per game through the first 13 contests of the year. After starting 2-2 in Atlantic 10 play, though, the Bonnies were surrendering 74.3 ppg before locking down Richmond. It was the ninth time this season that Bona has held an opponent under 60 points and the sixth contest the Bonnies have limited opponents to 55 points or less.
• Duane Thompson contributed seven points off the bench along with four rebounds in 16 minutes on Saturday at Duquesne in his best A-10 performance of the season.
• Miles Rose played a career-high 19 minutes off the bench in Saturday’s game.
• Sophomore Jonah Hinton set new career highs in points (19) and 3-pointers (five) in Wednesday’s victory vs. Richmond.
SERIES HISTORY
St. Bonaventure and George Mason have met 17 times and the Bonnies lead the series, 12-5. Since George Mason joined the A-10, the Bonnies have won 11 of 14 meetings, but
the Patriots captured the victory last season in Fairfax.
At the Reilly Center, the Bonnies are 6-1 against the Patriots.
In last year’s game, the Bonnies trailed by double digits during the first half before Bona roared back with a 21-5 run, doing nearly everything right to seize a five-point lead with 11:52 to play.
Up five with the ball out of a timeout, though, the Patriots forced a Bonnies turnover to start a turning of the tide.
The pendulum then swung back the other way, however, as an 11-0 Patriots run pushed Mason back in front, 58-52, with 3:52 remaining.
ABOUT GEORGE MASON
• George Mason has won four straight games and is fresh off a double overtime win over George Washington at home on Saturday, 80-77. That followed a big win at Dayton, 67-59, as well as a home triumphs vs. UMass (77-70) and Richmond (64-58) and Davidson (69-57). Mason’s only loss came on the road at Rhode Island, 62-59.
• The Patriots have built success on a stingy defense: George Mason leads the Atlantic 10 in points allowed per game (62.7) and ranks 12th nationally in scoring defense. Their defense has held opponents to just 36.4 percent shooting from the floor this year, ranking third in the country.
• Darius Maddox leads the team at 14.3 ppg while Jalen Haynes checks in with 12.4 ppg. Maddox is the best free throw shooter in the league at 90.8 percent at the stripe.
• The Patriots are in their second season under head coach Tony Skinn who was a key starter for the Patriots’ 2006 George Mason Final Four team. He immediately led the Patriots to 20 wins in his first season at the helm. Also on the Patriots coaching staff is longtime Bonaventure assistant Steve Curran who is in his second season as associate head coach with George Mason.

Twenty-five years after its run to the NCAA Tournament, the 19992000 St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team will be honored Feb. 1 on campus.
The team will be recognized during that day’s game against Fordham, which tips off at 12:30. In addition, there will be a postgame reception in the Hall of Fame Room for the team that is open to the public.
Members of that team who are confirmed to attend are head coach Jim Baron, Tim Winn, Caswell Cyrus, David Capers, Peter Van Paassen, Patricio Prato, J.R. Bremer, Vidal Massiah, James Hayden, Bob Dziengeleski, Eric Siegrist, and assistant coaches Joe Lombardi, Brian Nash and Pat Clarke.
One of the program’s best defensive teams ever, the Bonnies went 21-10 that season as they allowed just 64 points per game. St. Bonaventure posted non-conference wins over USC and Colorado
State and went 11-5 in conference games to place second in the Atlantic 10’s East Division. After wins over Dayton and Xavier, Baron’s club advanced to the championship game of the A-10 Tournament. St. Bonaventure then earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where the Bonnies fell in a double-overtime heartbreaker to Kentucky in Cleveland, Ohio.
Winn and Cyrus, who were both seniors that year, earned AllConference honors, Winn on the first team and Cyrus on the third team. Both players were also selected to the A-10 All-Defensive Team. Winn, Cyrus, and Prato also surpassed 1,000 career points.
Bremer, who was the team’s “sixth man” as a freshman that year, went on to score 1,732 career points. Bremer earned NBA AllRookie honors with the Boston Celtics and also played with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers.

The St. Bonaventure Athletics Department produced another impressive semester of academic success as Bonnies student-athletes compiled a 3.398 overall grade point average for the Fall 2024 semester.
"We are incredibly proud of the performance of our student-athletes academically, as well as athletically, during the Fall semester," said Vice President & Director of Athletics Bob Beretta. "Our Bonnies are true scholar-athletes in every sense and continue to represent St. Bonaventure University with great character and dignity in their competitive arenas and in the classroom."
It marks the 39th consecutive semester that St. Bonaventure student-athletes have boasted a department GPA of better than 3.0 – a run of nearly two full decades. Further, the department cumulative GPA is 3.372.
The Fall 2024 semester saw 79 percent of Bona's student-athletes (306 out of 389) post a GPA of 3.0 or better. Fifty-five percent of Bonnies student-athletes achieved a 3.5 semester GPA or better (213 of 389) while 77 percent (301) boast a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. Twenty-three scholar-athletes feature a cumulative GPA of 4.0.
Eighteen Bonaventure Division I programs saw their team GPA surpass 3.0 while 14 teams earned a GPA of 3.4 or higher during the most recent semester. Bonnies softball earned the crown of highest team GPA at 3.675 while the highest academic achieving male squad was men's soccer at 3.624.
"It is quite a testament to the culture of this department that 18 intercollegiate athletic teams recorded term grade-point averages above 3.0 and 14 programs posted grade-point averages of at least 3.4," Beretta added. "To have 51 of our Bona scholar-athletes post perfect 4.0 grade-point averages last semester is simply amazing. While we strive to win championships the 'right' way, achieving academic excellence will always be our highest priority. Our scholar-athletes continue to live that mantra every single day. I'd like to thank our staff, coaches and, of course, our wonderful faculty, for all they do to assist in our scholar-athletes' pursuit of comprehensive excellence."
