SUMMER CRAFT FAMILIES CAN ENJOY TOGETHER
Sunprints: Check out the craft store for a special lightsensitive solution that can be painted onto thick craft paper. Set various natural items on top (such as fern boughs, shells, feathers, and more) and let the sun do its work. You’ll ultimately be left with some beautiful silhouettes.
The sixth grade seemed to please him from the beginning: he went through a brief Egyptian Period that baffled me — he tried to walk flat a great deal, sticking one arm in front of him and one in back of him, putting one foot behind the other. He declared Egyptians walked that way; I saidif theydidIdidn’tseehow they got anything done, but Jem said they accomplished more than the Americans ever did, they invented toilet paper and perpetual embalming, and asked where would we be today if they hadn’t? WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR NEXT EYE EXAM
Tonometry measurement: Glaucoma occurs when intraocular pressure is high. Some eye doctors will conduct tests to determine the pressure. One way is with a non-contact tonometry test, which is a puff of air squirted at each eye. With applanation tonometry, the doctor first administers a mild numbing agent to the eye, and then uses a pressure-sensitive instrument to gently tap on the surface of the eye to get a pressure reading. A rebound tonometry test requires a handheld device that makes brief contact to the eye and doesn’t require local anesthesia.

TAILGATING DOS AND DON’T THIS SEASON
DO wear the team jersey. Of course you’ll want to wear the jersey or team colors to express your fandom. It also identifies you as friend (not a foe) to other fans.
DON’T expect a saved spot at the stadium. Tailgating typically is a first-come, first-served process in the parking lot. Unlike your tickets that promise a specific section and seat, if you want prime tailgating real estate, plan to arrive early.

Terry’s first love in life was farming. His life as a young boy was spent on his grandfather’s farm in Cohocton. He later purchased it and spent the rest of his life there. He especially liked his cows, all of which were named and he was very knowledgeable about them. He loved all the animals on the farm that came along as well. When he opened the door in the morning they would just show up. Terry’s love for farming was evident as the years progressed and he couldn’t farm the way he wanted, a part of him let go as well.
Terry and Linda Plowe were married August 1, 2009, however they were a loving couple many many years before that. They have been together over 30 years living and loving their way through life. He had a kind and caring way about him and he always was willing to help anybody at any time. Terry also enjoyed flea markets, yard sales, tractor shows and tractor pulls, county fairs, casinos and who can forget his favorite song ‘Lucille,’ a song by Kenny Rogers and of course sung by Terry Wilkins.
While not farming, Terry’s second career was with Pirrung Auctioneers. He was an integral ingredient in the making of successful auctions during his nearly 40 years as an Associate of Pirrung Auctioneers. Terry served Pirrung clients as a very capable appraiser, sales manager and clerk be it cattle, machinery, real estate, antiques or tools. His experience, knowledge and wisdom were spread over the years to various recipients. During his tenure with Pirrung he maintained a New York Real Estate License through Thomas P. Wamp. Terry Wilkins and Jim Pirrung covered thousands of miles together conducting auctions from western Ohio, throughout New Jersey and Rhode Island and North Carolina. Terry often mentioned that ‘we never had a bad meal on the road!’ In the spring of 1977 he hosted what would become the first of 30 consignment farm auctions including two dairy herds at his farm along State Route 371 between Cohocton and North Cohocton. These local historical events are still remembered by many. Terry was pre-deceased by his parents, Max and Donna Wilkins. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Wilkins of Cohocton; his children, Elizabeth Wilkins of AK, John (Tracey) Wilkins of CT and Douglas (Sue) Wilkins of Cohocton; his grandchildren; Hannah (Conrad) Dolholf and Miles Wilkins; his step children, Sharyl (James) Pirrung of Wayland and Karen (Basil) Williams of Syracuse; his step grandchildren, Lindsay (Chris) Miles and Allyson (Michael) Kuhn; and his great-grandchildren; Carter and Carlea Kuhn.
Terry’s family and friends were invited to call Sunday September 15th, 2024 from 2:00PM to 5:00PM. Terry’s funeral service was held Monday morning September 16th, 2024 at the funeral home. Interment took place immediately following at Clearview Cemetery in North Cohocton.
Contributions in memory of Terry D. Wilkins may be made to the Vincent House, 310 Second Avenue, Wayland, New York 14572 or to the Hatch Hose Fire Company, 30 University Avenue, Atlanta, New York 14808.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Fosamax Is an Appropriate, Albeit Powerful Medicine for
Osteopenia
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 65-year-old, overweight white woman. I recently had a DEXA scan, and based on the results, my general physician prescribed Fosamax for osteopenia.
The first dose created a horrible reaction two days after ingestion, with severe pain in both of my arms, my neck, and my legs. I was in absolute agony for two days, then it cleared up.
With the next dose a week later, I hesitated, but still decided to take it. Two days later, the reaction hit me again, only worse. I could barely walk, and my energy was so low. I spent four days in bed, except to cry when heading to the bathroom. I had not taken my Lasix prescription for those four days, as I could barely make it to the bathroom. I contacted my doctor, and she discontinued Fosamax. She’s referring me to a rheumatologist. I read that this drug has all my symptoms, plus more, listed under the severe reaction warning. I will not take it again. Also, a friend told me that this drug is not effective for osteoporosis after more than 20 years of drug tests, and I should not have been prescribed this drug, since I have osteopenia, not osteoporosis. Your thoughts? -- C.W.
ANSWER: Although aspirin is better than nothing, Alendronate (Fosamax) is in the class of drugs called bisphosphonates. These are powerful drugs that should not be prescribed lightly. They do have the potential for severe side effects. Severe musculoskeletal pain can occur days or months (sometimes years) after starting the medicine. The Food and Drug Administration has advised prescribers to discuss this possibility with their patients so that the drug can be stopped immediately if it occurs. There are other options available if the person really needs treatment. Your friend is half right. Powerful drugs like Fosamax are usually not indicated in people who have low bone mass (osteopenia) without osteoporosis. However, a history of a fragility fracture (breaking a bone from minor trauma that isn’t expected to cause a fracture) can make the diagnosis of osteoporosis, even if the bone density isn’t in the usual osteoporotic range. A person can have a high risk of fractures for other reasons, and a clinical tool called the FRAX score helps clinicians identify those who might benefit from treatment.
But your friend is also half wrong. When used appropriately, Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs are effective at reducing the risk of fractures. A vertebral body fracture can cause years of pain and be avoided easily, while a hip fracture can be devastating. So, there are very good reasons to prescribe these medicines. Finally, let me warn readers against complacence in treatment with these drugs. They may be appropriately prescribed for a high-risk person, but most people should not stay on this drug forever. Follow-up DEXA scans should guide therapy, and after three to five years, a conscious decision should be made whether to continue therapy.
Readers who have been on these drugs for more than five years and haven’t had careful follow-ups on their results should ask their doctors whether they still need to be taking them.***

* When preparing outdoor furniture for winter storage, it’s important to give it a nice cleaning. If you have a truck, why not load it up and bring it to the local self-serve car wash? e specialized brushes make it easy to clean right there in the back of the vehicle, and a pressure rinse gets soap and dirt from all the nooks and crannies.
* When you need an extra garbage bag, like during a party or while doing lawn chores, try this cool trick: Use a large pop-up laundry bin, and line it with a lawn and leaf garbage bag. Use chip clips to secure it at the top if you need to.

POW/MIA Recognition Day is commemorated on the third Friday of every September, a date that’s not associated with any particular war. In 1979, Congress and the president passed resolutions making it official after the families of the more than 2,500 Vietnam War POW/MIAs pushed for full accountability.
During the first POW/MIA Recognition Day commemoration, a ceremony was held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., while the 1st Tactical Squadron from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia flew the missing man formation. Ceremonies since then have been held at the Pentagon, and many smaller observances have cropped up across the nation. The point of POW/MIA Recognition Day is to ensure that American remembers to stand behind those who serve and to make sure we do everything we can to account for those who have never returned.
