DID YOU KNOW? When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE

Commuting is a part of daily life for many working professionals. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, the average American spends 25 minutes commuting to work each day. However, Citi’s 2015 ThankYou Premier Commuter Index says the average commute time in the United States is 45 minutes. The reasons for that disparity are unknown, though if one accepts the latter statistic as more accurate than the yearsold Census Bureau data, it’s fair to say Americans spend far more time getting to work than their neighbors to the north. But commutes in Canada also can be lengthy, as Canada’s National Household Survey found that, in 2011, commuters in Canada spent an average of roughly 25 minutes traveling to work each day. While many people enjoy their daily commutes, feeling it’s a time to prepare for the day ahead and, if using public transportation, to relax and let someone else do the work, it’s fair to say the majority of commuters would like to spend less time getting to and from work. Many would also like to spend less money getting to and from their offices, and finding ways to conserve fuel is an effective way to do just that.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza.
Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

Add fresh flavor to grilled chicken
Backyard barbecues provide the perfect opportunity for grillmasters to experiment with their favorite foods. Those who want to give grilled chicken a tasty twist can whip up this recipe for “Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts” from Eric Treuille and Birgit Erath’s “Grilling” (DK Publishing).
Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts
Serves 4
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/4 cup orange juice
4 boneless chicken breast halves, slashed (see below)
Salt
Avocado Mango Salsa (optional)
Combine garlic, chili powder, oregano, thyme, cumin, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, sugar, oil, lime juice, and orange juice. Add chicken and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes, turning once. Grill according to instructions below. Sprinkle with salt. Serve hot with avocado mango salsa if you prefer.
Outdoor grill: Grill skin-side down over medium-hot coals until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue grilling until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes.
Indoor grill: Preheat broiler. Broil skin-side up until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue cooking until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes.
To slash the chicken breasts: With a sharp knife, cut 3 parallel slashes through the skin, about 1/4-inch deep.
Marinate chicken up to 2 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate, turning several times in marinade.
Avocado Mango Salsa
Makes 12/3 cups
1 mango, finely diced
1 avocado, peeled, halved, pitted, and finely diced
1/2 red onion, finely chopped
1 red chile, seeded and finely chopped
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons finely chopped mint leaves
Salt Tabasco®
Combine mango, avocado, onion, chile, lime juice, vinegar, oil, and mint. Add salt and Tabasco® to taste. Cover and let stand for 30 minutes at room temperature to allow flavors to blend. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Hometown People
I love reading the Hometown Stories column each week. Learning about local people and organizations doing amazing things makes me thankful to live in such a great community. In an age of increasing technology and weaker personal connections, it's great to know our communities still thrive and bring people together. Thank you to everyone who has been featured on that page and I look forward to learning more about other great folks around town!
I called [national fix it company] to repair a washing machine. First they had a tech come out that said we needed to order a part but that we could get it cheaper online. So we ordered it online and called the company to come back. They replaced the part and the machine was working for a short time and then stopped again. They came back again and said the same part was broken but that it wasn’t covered under warranty since we bought it online. So now we have to buy the same part again and it will take 3 weeks for it to arrive. UGH.
Dockworkers Strike
Greed has already begun. If there’s a shortage of items due to the strike, why do businesses get away with raising prices of items already in stock? Businesses already paid for the items that are staged in their stockrooms. A shortage is one thing, but price increases is price gouging.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES
Mobile Pet Full Grooming Service
Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

HOW TO HELP PETS IN THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICAN HELENE
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m heartbroken seeing the destruction in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina a er Hurricane Helene. ere must be a lot of lost, hungry and suffering pets. I want to fill my truck and trailer with pet food and drive it to where it’s most needed, but I’m not sure where to go. Do you have any advice? -- Maggie in upstate New York
DEAR MAGGIE: It is heartwarming knowing that you and other pet owners want to do something positive for people and their pets in these areas that have been so hard hit.
As I write this, organizations from across the country are getting in place, setting up in strategic locations so that they can distribute aid, assist with rescues and help recover those lost to this storm. With many major highways cut, travel is nearly impossible in North Carolina, and very difficult elsewhere.
e best thing that you can do right now is to stay put. Instead of driving supplies to disaster areas, start a fundraising drive and donate cash to an organization that is actively helping pets and their owners.
For example, the ASPCA is working with the Humane Society in Charlotte, North Carolina, to evacuate rescue and foster dogs from Asheville and surrounding areas. e Humane Society of the United States is doing likewise. Both organizations are helping owners with pet food and medical care, and providing shelter to animals without families.
Donating to these major organizations, or selecting a local shelter or rescue group in these areas to support now and in the months to come, will help immensely.
Clarification: In a previous column on ticks, it was implied that ticks transmit heartworm. ey do not; however, they can transmit tapeworms.

* Many more of us are using the reusable fabric shopping bags nowadays. A few cities have banned the use of plastic bags for retail shops. ese bags are much better for the environment, and can hold a lot more groceries per bag. One thing many people forget to do is wash them. You can take out the plastic insert (if there is one) and toss them in the washing machine. Hang to dry and you’re carrying around a much cleaner bag!

The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

Meet Tyler Stone, the New Owner Bringing Fresh Energy to Salvatore’s Saloon in Scottsville
BY SUZIE WELLS
August 1, 2024, Tyler Stone took the reins at Salvatore’s Saloon in Scottsville, a beloved local establishment known for its cra beer, full bar, and lively atmosphere in addition to great Salvatore’s staples. For nearly a decade, Salvatore’s Saloon has been a hub for live music, sports events, and community gatherings, and under Tyler’s leadership, exciting new changes are here.
Tyler, a long-time Henrietta resident with deep roots in the hospitality industry, is no stranger to running a business. A er working in the grocery trucking and logistics industry for over a decade and finding the long days and weekend hours unfavorable for a father of four young children, he and his wife have owned and managed another local establishment in Henrietta for three years now.
When long-time friend and neighbor, Nick Pearl, owner of the Henrietta Salvatore’s Saloon, expressed interest in downsizing his locations, Tyler initially joked about taking over, but jumped at the chance when Nick seriously offered it. e Stone family now brings his family values and passion for community to Scottsville.
Tyler admits he had never even made a pizza before, so he trained undercover at the Salvatore’s Garage Door location (he shares a big thank you to Ray LoRe on East Ridge Rd.!), learning everything he needed to know to make the great Salvatore’s products. When rumors started to circulate, Tyler worked officially with Nick at the Henrietta shop.
Salvatore’s Saloon had been a staple of the Scottsville community since 2015, drawing shoulder-to-shoulder crowds from miles around for the live music, fun, and great food, but COVID hit it hard. Tyler says he’s excited to build on what made the location so special and to bring the fun back.
Tyler’s vision includes a few key upgrades. Now, Salvatore’s Saloon offers delivery, making the famous pizzas and wings accessible to more people. Tyler even personally delivers pizzas in a vehicle emblazoned with the pink Salvatore’s logo so he can introduce himself to the community. Tyler is reaching out to local schools, legions, and community organizations to introduce himself and get to know the community they now serve.
In addition to delivery, the menu has expanded with new food and drink options. Tyler says, “We’ve brought in a bunch of new liquors and lowered prices to make everything more affordable. It’s important to me that everyone feels welcome when they walk in.”
Salvatore’s Saloon also embraces its role as a town gathering spot. e upstairs private event room is perfect for parties, and local favorites such as karaoke, darts, and live bands are making a strong return. Quick Draw will soon be available as well, he says.
Since taking over, Tyler has made significant improvements to the saloon, streamlining kitchen operations and improving service times. “Ticket times are cut in half and morale is high. Everyone’s happy and getting along, which makes a huge difference for the customers,” he says.
Tyler’s commitment to the community extends beyond the saloon’s walls. Salvatore’s and the Stones sponsor adult sports leagues such as the Rochester Renegades, and Tyler actively supports a variety of local organizations like Stokoe Farms and Rush’s Train Museum.
For Tyler and his wife, Ashley, Salvatore’s Saloon is more than just a business; it’s a family affair. Together with their daughters, Elliana (13), Olivia (12), Nova (7), and Breezie (5), the Stones are proud to now be part of the Scottsville community. “My girls think it’s the coolest thing ever” to own and run a Salvatore’s, Tyler laughs, adding, “Next year, my eldest will turn 14, and she’s so excited to help out.”
Tyler’s long-term goal is to create a family legacy through his businesses. “I want to pass this down to my kids. Eventually, I’d like to own a couple more locations so each of my daughters can have one.”
As Tyler continues to build relationships in Scottsville, he invites locals to stop by, grab a slice, and enjoy the new vibe at Salvatore’s Saloon. “Come make some memories with us. We’re bringing the good vibes, smiles, and endless laughs back to Scottsville.”
Whether you’re a longtime regular or a new face in town, Tyler and the team at Salvatore’s Saloon are ready to welcome you with open arms, delicious food, and great company.

HOW TO SUPPORT LOVED ONES WHO HAVE BREAST CANCER
Offer practical support. Cancer affects the body in a number of ways. Energy levels may wane and certain symptoms may arise. Side effects from treatments also can make it difficult to continue with daily tasks. So an offer to help with tasks associated with daily living, such as cooking meals, gardening, washing clothes, or cleaning up around the house, can be practical and much appreciated. Approach the individual and ask questions in pointed ways. Rather than, “What can I do to help?”, which may result in an answer of, “Nothing,” figure out a way to pitch in and then ask if that would be acceptable. This may be, “Would you like me to run to the supermarket for you today?”
ROUTINE ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS
You may not realize your dentist is checking for signs of oral cancer during your routine checkups. They will look for abnormal sores or discolored patches, feel around the inside of the mouth for lumps, and feel your throat and neck for lumps as well. If a dentist sees anything concerning, they may carry out additional tests in-office or perform a biopsy for testing. Sometimes screening dyes and lights are used to isolate problem areas that may need further investigation. Precancerous lesions can be removed by a dentist or an oral surgeon. While tobacco and heavy alcohol use are the primary risk factors for oral cancer, HPV (human papilloma virus) is thought to be causing increasing incidences of oral cancer.

patient exams are in-depth and comprehensive. This is an important part of establishing a baseline against which we can measure future oral profiles and progress. And regular professional checkups make it possible to watch for developing concerns and address them while they are still small, before they can turn into something more serious. For an appointment for advanced, gentle dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246 at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we’ll give you a reason to smile!
P.S. HPV infections can lead to mouth and throat cancers. The HPV vaccine is routinely given to adolescents starting around age nine, but some adults can get this vaccine too.

Endometrial Biopsy Indicated for Woman With Blood in Urine
DEAR DR. ROACH: About three months ago, I bled a bit while urinating. This was the first (and only) time in over 30 years that this happened since I went through menopause. An ultrasound was performed, and they found a mildly thickened endometrium (6.1 mm) with scattered cystic change and without focal lesion.
My gynecologist is suggesting an endometrial biopsy. I am concerned because I have no symptoms other than kidney stones. I’m due to see a urologist, but even with my kidney stones, I have no symptoms. I am 80 and concerned about anesthesia. Should I go ahead with the biopsy? - L.O.
ANSWER: A thickened endometrium is concerning for uterine cancer. The most common symptom of uterine cancer is abnormal uterine bleeding. This usually takes the form of red, pink or brown spotting. However, it sounds like you had blood in your urine, which is more concerning for kidney stones than uterine bleeding.
Your ultrasound is abnormal; 5 mm is the maximum thickness for a normal endometrium. Getting a biopsy is clearly the recommended procedure, as it gives guidance on the next steps. Still, your risk of uterine cancer is small. You do not have to proceed with the biopsy if you do not want to. An endometrial biopsy is an in-office procedure with minimal risk. My textbooks say there is minimal pain, but my patients tell me this isn’t always the case. You don’t have to receive anesthesia; you can take pain medication (such as naproxen), get a local anesthetic, or do both. I’ve had several patients who’ve requested a nerve block and were very happy with their decision. If the biopsy shows cancer of the endometrium, surgery is the preferred treatment, but radiation is also a possibility for some people.

THE ORIGINS OF OKTOBERFEST
Although Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations now take place all over the globe. They are a chance to enjoy the early autumn weather with music, food, entertainment and, ofcourse,Germanbeer.
Oktoberfest isa16-dayfolkfestival that begins at the end of September and runs through the first week of October. Roughly six million people travel to Germany each year to participate in the official Oktoberfest, while many others attend festivities closer to home. While many people are familiar with the foods, beverages and pageantry of Oktoberfest, they may not be so sure of Oktoberfest’sorigins.
According to History.com, the first Oktoberfest took place on October 12, 1810, when Bavarian Crown Prince Louis, later to be known as King Louis I of Bavaria, married Princess Therese von SachsenHildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited, and the festivities were held on the fields in front of the city gates. Horse races took place and eventually concluded the festivities, both at the city gates and elsewhere across Bavaria. The festival and horse races were held once again the following year, giving rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest. To increase the potential for fun and take advantage of longer days, the event was expanded from one day to a few weeks, stretching through September andintoOctober.
The tradition-rich horse race no longer takes place and hasn’t for more than 50years.But the festive atmosphere still prevails. Huge tents are erected to accommodate the large crowds. Since 1950, the traditional festival opening has been a twelve-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the Mayor of Munich with the cry “O’zapftis!” (“It’stapped!”).
Millions of people participate in Oktoberfest celebrations. An abundance of food and millions of liters of beer are available to enhancethefun.
