STARTING A PET SITTING BUSINESS
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m 16 and love pets -- I have a dog, cat and an iguana already -- and I want to start my own pet sitting business. What is the best way to start? How do I get customers? Do I need a license or something? -- Jeannie H., Pittsburgh
DEAR JEANNIE: Pet sitting can be a great business to get into. Every pet owner needs someone to watch their pet from time to time: long workdays, vacations, illness and so on. However, it’s a business that carries a lot of responsibility. Being reliable is very important and is essential to building your reputation as a sitter that pet owners can trust. I recommend a trial period first, with a couple of neighbors or your parents’ friends. is will give you an idea of what the job entails, how long it takes to care for each pet, and can open your eyes to opportunities. For example, a neighbor who works from home may not need a sitter, but their dog could use an extra walk in the a ernoon.
At the same time, study up on the requirements for running a business. Entrepreneurship courses are o en available for free through your local library or at the Small Business Association (where you can also find a business mentor).
BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS
Animal trainers can address any type of behavior. According to the Animal Behavior Institute, trainers who work with dogs, cats, parrots, or other companion animals must have a thorough and detailed knowledge of animal behavior. Pet owners who have successfully housebroken puppies in the past may think they can do it again with relative ease, but no two puppies are the same. Techniques that worked with one dog will not necessarily work with another. Trainers recognize this and have an array of techniques within their arsenal, making them capable of addressing and correcting any type of behavior.
Most states don’t have a licensing requirement for pet sitters, but you can get a certification through Pet Sitters International (petsit.com), or the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). ese organizations offer a wealth of information -- including how to find clients.
Most of all, have fun! You’re getting into this business because you love pets, and that will be a big factor in your success.

PASTA ITALIANO WITH ONION AND PORK
1 1/4 pounds pork loin sirloin chops or pork shoulder blade steaks
2 teaspoons each ground cumin and chili powder
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion (10 ounces), cut into narrow wedges
1 can (14 1/2 ounces) Italian recipe stewed tomatoes
1 package (9 ounce) fresh linguini pasta
Grated Parmesan and fresh or dried minced herbs
Trim the fat from the chops or blade steaks. Trim the meat from bones, and cut into small cubes. Dust pork with cumin and oregano. Heat oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and pork and sauté until cooked through, about 8 minutes. Add tomatoes and heat. Cook linguine in boiling water about 2 minutes or as package directs. Drain and serve with porkonion sauce on top. Sprinkle with cheese and herbs. Makes 4 servings.

Byron EMTs Take Top Honors atNYSBasicLife SupportCompetition

This year, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Laura Platt and Tatum Higby, from Byron Fire Department’s Rescue Squad took first place in the NYS Basic Life Support competition in October.
e EMS Games held this year at the Riverside Convention Center in Rochester on October 16-20 brought together teams of EMTs and Paramedics from across New York State for an exciting competition sponsored by Aura Prep and the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) Paramedic Program.
e event featured a series of challenging, real-world scenarios designed to test participants’ clinical skills, quick thinking, and teamwork under pressure. Teams demonstrated their expertise in emergency response, patient care, and problem-solving, vying for top honors and recognition. e sponsorship by BMCC and Aura Prep highlighted their commitment to advancing EMS education and fostering a robust and skilled community of first responders across the state.

Higby was so excited when she learned that Vital Signs Conference (“cutting edge EMS education by world-renowned educators, focusing on strengthening skills and enhancing clinical knowledge to support them in providing the highest quality care to their patients”) was being held in Rochester; she was eager to learn more, and the conference workshops and exhibits offered a great opportunity for her.
is year the council added a new twist for attendees. e EMS games were held at the Strong Museum of Play on the morning of Saturday, October 19th. Each company signed up a team to participate in a “real life scenario.” Higby urged her mentor, Platt, to team up and compete with her. Higby created the team’s name, “Lil Legs of Byron.”
Just before the “call,” the teams of two were given a few minutes to familiarize themselves with the equipment available for them to use and they were allowed 20 minutes to complete the call.
e scenario the Byron team faced was in a restaurant setting where an employee was having trouble breathing. e team accessed the scene and the patient, who was alone in the restaurant. e team used their skills as they treated the patient with oxygen, an EpiPen, and albuterol to keep the patient alive because they were notified the ambulance was 40 minutes away.
e two teams that were in first place in both categories, EMT and Advanced, received medals. Both winners were also awarded a large trophy cup they can keep and display for the year. It will have their names and the date engraved on it.
Team Lil Legs of Byron took the EMT first place. Second place went to Wayne County and third place to Madison County. e Byron Fire Department will proudly display their trophy in their hall.
e workshops helped first responders hone their knowledge and collect continuing medical education (CME) credits to maintain their licenses with the state. e last one held in Rochester was in 2017, so it was exciting to bring the workshop

Chocolate Raspberry Bars
CRUST
1 cup flour
1/4 cup Xsugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine FILLING
1/2 cup seedless raspberry jam
4 oz. so ened cream cheese
2 T milk
1 cup vanilla/white chocolate flavored chips - melted GLAZE
3/4 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
2 T shortening
In a bowl, combine & X sugar, cut in butter until crumbly. Press into an ungreased 9 inch baking pan. Bake @ 375 for 15-18 minutes until browned. Spread jam over warm crust. In a small mixing bowl, beat cream, cheese, and milk until smooth. And vanilla chips and beat until smooth. Spread evenly over jam layer and cool completely then chill in refrigerator until set-about one hour. For the glaze, melt chocolate chips, and shortening, spread overfilling & chill for 15 minutes. Cut into bars, then chill another hour

Planning pointers for holiday hosts
Hosting is a significant part of the holiday season. From late November until New Year's Day, millions of people across North America welcome friends and family into their homes. Whether you're hosting a small gathering with locally based loved ones or welcoming distant relatives into your home for several days, the following are some planning pointers to ensure your home is ready and guests feel welcome this holiday season.
• Hire a local cleaning service. e holiday season can be hectic. Holiday functions at school, office parties, community events, and more fill up social schedules between late November and early January. Busy social schedules leave little time for house cleaning, which is a must before welcoming guests into a home. A local cleaning service can clean the whole house for hosts welcoming overnight guests or focus on a few popular entertaining areas if party guests will be going home at the end of the night.
• Get an early head count. Ask party invitees and prospective overnight guests to RSVP early enough to ensure you can accommodate everyone's needs. Additional seating may be required for holiday parties, while hosts may need to arrange for extra bedding for overnight guests. e earlier you know who's coming, and potentially staying, the more time you have to ensure you can accommodate everyone.
• Rent items from a local party supply store. When hosting large gatherings, a local party supply store can be the place to go for decorations, seating, food trays and utensils, and more. Such establishments also may rent specialty supplies like outdoor heat lamps for cold weather parties or tents and outdoor tables and chairs in areas where the weather is warm during the holiday season. Hosts can typically rent everything they need to host the party, saving them the expense of buying items that may just sit in storage the rest of the year.
• Arrange for transportation. Whether guests are flying in from distant lands or local friends, relatives or neighbors stopping in for the night, hosts can arrange for transportation to and from their homes to ensure everyone arrives safely and makes it home without incident. Pick overnight guests up at the airport so they see a friendly face upon arrival. When hosting gatherings with local family and friends, encourage others to share how they intend to get home and recruit designated drivers if you intend to serve alcohol.

SERVE POTATO PANCAKES FOR HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS
Serves 12
3 large potatoes, peeled and shredded
1 small onion, shredded 3 large eggs
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, or as needed
1/2 cup vegetable oil
Toppings: Sriracha sauce
Vegan coconut yogurt
1. Place the potatoes and onion into a bowl, and stir in eggs, salt and flour as needed to make the mixture hold together. With wet hands, scoop up about 1/3 cup of the mixture per patty, and form into flat round or oval shapes.
2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it shimmers, and gently place the patties into the hot oil. Fry until the bottoms are golden brown and crisp, 5 to 8 minutes, then flip with a spatula and fry the other side until golden.

Blood Pressure Spikes Could Denote Labile Hypertension
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 85 years old and in good health for my age. I am an active nonsmoker, eat healthy, practice tai chi, and enjoy having many friends. I have no reason to experience extreme anxiety. Yet, for months, I’ve had unexplained blood pressure spikes.
The highest I had was 243/127 mm Hg, and this is when I called local EMTs who took me to the emergency room. I was given meds to lower my blood pressure, two electrocardigorams, and an X-ray. I was discharged after three hours and was told that my heart seemed fine.
I am now taking losartan and propranolol. I tried triamterene after consulting with a cardiologist, but I couldn’t tolerate the side effects. I occasionally use lorazepam.
Today a blood pressure reading showed 197/100 mm Hg. Just the thought of checking my blood pressure spikes the reading. How long can I go on with these blood pressure levels? Can these readings be normal for some people? - S.O.
ANSWER: No, these readings are not normal. Since you s ay that your blood pressure “spikes,” I think you mean that most of the time, your blood pressure is normal.
The biggest concern is a condition where the body intermittently secretes substances that raise the blood pressure. This may be caused by a tumor called a pheochromocytoma. They are exceedingly rare but must be looked for in a case like yours, with sudden and dramatic spikes in your blood pressure. Your regular doctor or cardiologist will know how to look for a pheochromocytoma.
If you have a spike, a blood test will be dramatically elevated for epinephrine and norepinephrine. But if your blood pressure is normal at the time of the visit, a 24-hour urine test is done.
There are other rare causes, including blockages in the arteries to the kidneys and certain drug use, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (very rarely used for depression) in combination with some foods. Cocaine use is another cause in a person on a beta blocker, like the propranolol you are on.
Even more likely is a condition called labile hypertension, where emotional stress leads to an increase in blood pressure levels. This is more likely for you because of the last thing you said: Just the thought of checking your blood pressure may cause it to spike.
Managing labile hypertension should be done by an expert. There are experts in hypertension who know how to manage very unusual cases of hypertension, whether they’re generalists, nephrologists or cardiologists. Your doctor may have already considered this diagnosis because lorazepam is often used for spikes, sometimes in combination with short-acting blood pressure medicines, like labetalol or clonidine.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA A KEY TO COMPASSIONATE CARE
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more prominent forms of dementia, but there are many additional types of dementia that also can cause both physical and cognitive alterations. Understanding the complexity of dementia can be beneficial to both dementia sufferers and their caregivers. Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging.

If not, scale things back until the project more closely aligns with your budget.

MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)
Serves 4
1 pound morcilla blood sausage
1 pound mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 cloves garlic, slivered
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons white wine
1 cup shelled spring peas
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint
2 tablespoons mint oil
Mint Oil
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 cup chopped mint
Pinch of salt
Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.
In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil. For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

STUDY SHOWS GIFT CARDS CAN GIVE A BOOST TO SMALL BUSINESSES
(NAPSI)—If you own or run any of America’s nearly 31 million small businesses, recent research reveals gift cards can be a real gift to your bottom line. According to a 2019 Small Business Gift Card Study commissioned by First Data, now Fiserv, gift card programs help small business owners bring in more sales, attract new customers, and build relationships with their customers.
Small Businesses, Big Benefits
Not only do gift cards benefit a business, consumers expect them to be available at their favorite stores. In fact, 74 percent of consumers surveyed said they regularly buy gift cards from small businesses. And for business owners, offering gift cards can:
• Grow sales—Nearly 80 percent of consumers said if they have a gift card valued at 88 cents, they will visit the store to redeem it
• Attract customers—90 percent of consumers who receive a gift card from a small business they have never visited said they would shop at that business and return in the future
• Build loyalty—56 percent of consumers who shop at small businesses join their loyalty or frequent shopper programs. Of consumers that join loyalty programs at small businesses, 73 percent said gift cards are a preferred way for their loyalty to be rewarded.

When asked about the ideal gift card to give someone, or receive and use themselves, consumers agreed on their top three: casual dining restaurants; coffee shops; personal services (i.e., hair or nail salon).
Other popular businesses from which to give or receive gift cards included supermarket/ grocery stores, entertainment/movie theaters, and quick-serve restaurants.
Employee Incentives
Gift cards are often a popular choice for employers who use them to say thank you or reward a job well done. For 90 percent of consumers, they’ve not only received a gift card from their employer, but view it as an incentive to reward their hard work.
Additional Findings
• When purchasing gift cards, 60 percent of consumers prefer plastic cards or paper certificates, but interest in digital gift cards is growing.

I live in [local county] and have horses, dogs and cats. Most people are considerate and follow the rules when using the public parks. Last week when riding, a loose dog lunged up, biting me and then biting at my horse. The situation was chaotic as the dog owner rushed at my horse while yelling (at their dog) who was nipping/barking at the horse. Off leash dogs do not need to be the problem they are. Cookie Recipe: 4 Cups Rice Krispies Cereal; 1 cup light corn syrup; 1 cup granulated sugar; 1 1/4 cups creamy peanut butter; 5 reg.sized Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups; 1/2 cup chocolate chips. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside and place your Rice Krispies in a large mixing bowl. 2. In a large microwave safe bowl, combine your corn syrup, sugar, and peanut butter and cook on high for 2-3 inutes, stirring every 30 seonds until your mixture is evenly combined. 3. Pour your peanut butter mixture over your Rice Krispies and mix. 4. Mix in your chocolate chips. 5. A er a couple minutes, mix in your crushed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, to avoid them fully melting. 6. Spoon your treats out with an ice cream scoop and onto your lined baking pan, let cool, then using a fork, slightly flatten them (so they look more like a thick cookie instead of a ball). 7. ENJOY!
