DID YOU KNOW? The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spiceisalsoakeyingredientwhen preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.
CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES
Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE
(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:
Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.
Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.
Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise.Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF
Telecommunications According to the NDC, telecommunications technology has evolved considerably in recent decades. That evolution has made it easier than ever for deaf individuals to communicate.
The NDC notes that telecommunications technology for deaf individuals is an umbrella term that includes telephone devices, platforms and services that are employed when standard phones are ineffective. The NDC identifies three primary telecommunications services:
1. Video relay service (VRS)
2. Telecommunications relay service (TRS)
3. Video remote interpreting (VRI)
Regulated by the Federal Communications Commission,VRS and TRS are free programs, whereas VRI is a fee-based service. TRS is a text-driven service that, unlike VRI and VRS, does not employ video.

Planning pointers for holiday hosts
Hosting is a significant part of the holiday season. From late November until New Year's Day, millions of people across North America welcome friends and family into their homes. Whether you're hosting a small gathering with locally based loved ones or welcoming distant relatives into your home for several days, the following are some planning pointers to ensure your home is ready and guests feel welcome this holiday season.
• Hire a local cleaning service. e holiday season can be hectic. Holiday functions at school, office parties, community events, and more fill up social schedules between late November and early January. Busy social schedules leave little time for house cleaning, which is a must before welcoming guests into a home. A local cleaning service can clean the whole house for hosts welcoming overnight guests or focus on a few popular entertaining areas if party guests will be going home at the end of the night.
• Get an early head count. Ask party invitees and prospective overnight guests to RSVP early enough to ensure you can accommodate everyone's needs. Additional seating may be required for holiday parties, while hosts may need to arrange for extra bedding for overnight guests. e earlier you know who's coming, and potentially staying, the more time you have to ensure you can accommodate everyone.
• Rent items from a local party supply store. When hosting large gatherings, a local party supply store can be the place to go for decorations, seating, food trays and utensils, and more. Such establishments also may rent specialty supplies like outdoor heat lamps for cold weather parties or tents and outdoor tables and chairs in areas where the weather is warm during the holiday season. Hosts can typically rent everything they need to host the party, saving them the expense of buying items that may just sit in storage the rest of the year.
• Arrange for transportation. Whether guests are flying in from distant lands or local friends, relatives or neighbors stopping in for the night, hosts can arrange for transportation to and from their homes to ensure everyone arrives safely and makes it home without incident. Pick overnight guests up at the airport so they see a friendly face upon arrival. When hosting gatherings with local family and friends, encourage others to share how they intend to get home and recruit designated drivers if you intend to serve alcohol.
Hosts can take heed of these planning pointers so guests feel welcome and have a good time this holiday season. TF23B455
HOW BUSINESSES CAN SUPPORT THEIR LOCAL LGBTQ+ COMMUNITIES
Take a stand against discrimination. Discrimination has no place in modern society. Local business owners can offer their employees extensive anti-discrimination training so they recognize how their own behaviors and the behavior of others might be interpreted by people from different backgrounds. Periodically revisit training, even with longtime employees, to ensure staff and customers all feel welcome and safe.

Dangerous E-Bike Riders
I left my wallet/phone in a cart at Henrietta Wegmans. When I realized it, I went into major panic mode! I drove back to Wegmans, nearly hyperventilating. At the Customer Service Desk, I saw it on their back counter, and we were reunited. I can’t even explain the relief I felt. To the person who turned it in - you are the best that ever lived!! You probably can imagine how panicked I was. I wish I could give you a big hug!! Thank you, thank you, thank you SOOO much!! God bless you!
Lately, I’ve come close to hitting e-bike riders riding on the wrong side of the road, in the dark, without lights and going way too fast. Bikes in their purest form are designed to help the rider get an assist going up hills. Some e-bikes are nothing more than simple motorcycles going way too fast and, in this case, riding on the wrong side of the road. You are a danger to yourself and others.
Help the Reindeer and The Birds
Simple act of kindness
Thank you to the gentleman who stopped November 14 on Summers Street, Livonia to check on my welfare. I had just given blood and felt faint which prompted me to sit down on the ground. His kindness and concern warmed my heart and reminded why I love small town people. A simple act of kindness changes everything!
Around this time of year there is a craft project often done with young kids to make reindeer food. This mix of seed, grains and glitter is sprinkled outside to feed Santa’s reindeer. It is mostly eaten by birds and other wild animals. Adding glitter to this food endangers the life of animals. The chemicals in glitter can damage immune and reproductive systems. Also, most glitter is made from PET plastic. It can break down and release chemicals that disrupt animal hormones. When making reindeer food, please leave out this toxic ingredient and make a product that is safe for all. Your kids won’t miss the glitter and you’ll be helping out wildlife.
Ely S. Parker: A Legacy Bridging Two Worlds Began in Genesee County
BY SUZIE WELLS
Ely Samuel Parker, born Hasanoanda in 1828 on the Tonawanda Indian Reservation in current Genesee County, stands as a significant figure in both Native American and U.S. history. Raised in Seneca traditions but immersed in Western education and diplomacy, Parker’s journey represents the blending and sometimes clashing of these two worlds.
Parker attended a Baptist mission school at which he adopted the name Ely Parker, and where he studied Latin, Greek, and science, and excelled as an orator. His language and oratory skills impressed Seneca elders, who selected him to translate, scribe, and interpret for the Seneca when he was just 14. (2). He became a crucial figure in their appeals to the newly forming U.S. government, and when treaties threatened to remove the Senecas to Kansas, Parker was instrumental in navigating challenging negotiations.
A er his experience in Washington, Parker sought a law career but was denied entry to the New York bar due to discriminatory citizenship requirements. Unfazed, he turned to study civil engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Albany, later working as a resident engineer to expand the Erie Canal. (3).
During this time, he was proclaimed Sachem of the Six Nations, working tirelessly to secure the rights of the Seneca to their lands. ese cases led to a Senate treaty allowing the Tonawanda Senecas to reclaim over 7,000 acres of their homeland, a rare legal victory in Native American land rights. (1).
Securing a position with the US Treasury Department, Parker met and befriended Ulysses S. Grant. When the Civil War broke out, Parker offered to raise a volunteer Iroquois regiment for the Union but was rejected by the NY Governor. In 1863, Parker was appointed an engineer in the Army of the Tennessee thanks to Grant, and when Grant rose to command the Military Division of the Mississippi, Grant promoted Parker to adjutant, and by the end of 1864, newlyappointed General-in-Chief Grant appointed Parker Military Secretary with lieutenant colonel rank. Parker notably played a historic role at Appomattox in April 1865, where he rendered the surrender of General Robert E. Lee. At this significant meeting, Lee remarked, “I am glad to see one real American here,” to which, Parker famously replied, “We are all Americans, sir.” (1, 4).
Parker continued to serve as Grant’s secretary until the general’s retirement from the Army in 1869. Grant, becoming President of the US, reportedly “created a sensation in 1971 when he appointed Parker the nation’s first Native American Commissioner of Indian Affairs” (4). In this role, Parker helped implement Grant’s “Peace Policy,” which aimed to protect Native populations and reduce military conflicts. However, his tenure was marred by accusations of misconduct by his political adversaries, and though a Congressional investigation cleared him of wrongdoing, Parker resigned in 1871, leaving government service under a cloud of controversy. (1, 2).
Parker’s later years were a period of humility and introspection. He tried his hand on Wall Street but lost his investments within five years and returned to civil service as a clerk with the New York City Police Department. Parker also re-engaged with his Seneca heritage as poet Harriet Maxwell Converse reignited his interest in
Haudenosaunee culture. Reflecting on his life and the sacrifices he made for acceptance in American society, Parker experienced a renewal of his identity as Do-Ne-Ho-Ga-Wa. (2).
In his final years, Parker struggled with health, passing away in 1895 in Fairfield, Connecticut. In 1897, he was buried with full military honors and interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, NY beside the grave of Red Jacket, completing a symbolic return to his roots. (1, 2).
Parker’s legacy endures, celebrated on the 2022 Native American Dollar Coin, “depicted in his Army uniform with a quill pen and book, “symbols of his experience as an expert communicator, according to the Tonawanda Indian Reservation Historical Society in Akron. Inscriptions ‘TONAWANDA SENECA’ and ‘HA-SA-NO-AN-DA’ recognize his tribe and birth name. (3).
According to PBS’s documentary, A Warrior in Two Worlds, Parker was a controversial figure considered a hero by some and a traitor by others, as he tried to balance the two worlds of his Indigenous heritage and the demands of his adopted nation. (2).
As we consider American Native American Heritage Month, consider ancestors (or contemporaries) who may struggle to “walk in two worlds” as well. Check out the historical artifacts celebrating the region’s Native American history throughout the hallways of the Tonawanda Indian Community House in Akron.

Here’s A Tip

* Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box mix of cake on hand. Instead of the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. ey are really good, and you can get pretty creative.
* Inexpensive gi idea: A cute holiday coffee mug with a bar of chocolate, a packet of hot cocoa or instant coffee, a peppermint stick and a holiday pick. Place inside a gallon-size zipper-top bag, tie with a ribbon, then trim off the zipper-top, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice.
* Instead of going out and buying extra items to have on hand for guests, just borrow from your neighbors. Extra towels, place settings, silverware, kitchen appliances: It’s a pretty good bet that someone on your street has it for you to borrow. If you don’t know your neighbors well enough to ask, maybe you should start planning a get-to-knowyou party right now.

TRIP
LED road flares: Traditional road flares tend to burn out rather quickly, with some lasting as little as 15 minutes. That can be a problem for travelers who experience car trouble and end up stranded far away from auto body shops. Some flameless LED road flares can last for hours on end off of a single charge, providing drivers with some peace of mind should they be stranded and forced to wait awhile before a tow truck or mechanic arrives.
PB&What?
In Hong Kong teahouses, "Western toast" is often filled with peanut butter or jam.
It's got a bunch of names
Eggy Bread
German Toast
Poor Knights
Torrija
Did you know?
National French Toast Day falls on the day of Thanksgiving. It’s the perfect time to make some French toast and sit and watch the Thanksgiving Day parade with your family before the festivities begin!
Here’s the first thing you need to know
The French do not call this French toast. It’s called “pain perdu,” or “lost bread,” because you can literally use stale bread to make it.
Most experts agree that Fren toast dates back to ancient Rome.
A similar recipe can be found in the book of Apicius from the 5th century BC. The Romans dipped slices of bread in milk (and sometimes eggs) before frying them, and called it “Pan Dulcis.”

PEACH BRUSCHETTA WITH BLUE CHEESE
Serves 4
4 slices country bread 2 peaches
Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing 1/4poundbluecheese,gorgonzola or Blue Castello cheese
Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes.
While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact.
When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread one-fourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve.

* There have been more than 300 different Kit Kat flavors in Japan, including soy sauce, “European cheese” and wasabi. Some of them are limited or regional editions. Because the candy bar’s name coincidentally sounds like the Japanese expression “Kitto Katsu,” which translates to “You will surely win,” it is a popular good-luck gift for students ahead of their university exams.

SUPPORTING A TOOTH AFTER A FILLING
While filling a dental cavity should not be painful, you may experience some mild pain or discomfort after the numbing agent wears off. Depending on the type of filling and which tooth is affected, your dentist will have slightly different recommendations for aftercare. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications should be enough to keep the tooth area comfortable. Pain beyond this level should be reported to your dentist. Avoid hot and cold beverages for a few days because your tooth may be sensitive. Sticky substances like caramel or hard candy should be avoided for a few weeks. Do not chew, bite, or apply pressure to the new filling. Continue brushing and flossing as usual, taking extra care around the new filling.
Following any dental procedures we perform in our office, we always provide patients with detailed home care instructions to help
ensure a successful experience and a problem-free oral future.
At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our purpose in presenting this column is to exhibit the virtues of professional care in achieving and maintaining a healthy, vibrant smile. Through a combination of communication and compassionate concern and proven techniques and innovative technology, we attempt to move our patients toward an optimum state of oral health. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, hours are by appointment; call 585.343.4246--we’ll give you a reason to smile!
P.S. Your bite may be different after getting a new filling. If your teeth don’t come together like they did before the filling, your dentist can make adjustments.

Doctor Recommends Bisphosphonates Due To High Frax Score
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an active, 5-foot-2-inch, 125-pound, 72-year-old Caucasian woman without a history of known osteoporotic risk factors, other than demographic ones. I exercise daily, eat calcium through food, take 2,000 units of vitamin D, and follow a Mediterranean-style diet.
My last dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan showed a T-score in my spine of -3.3 and a T-score in my hip of -2.7. My Z-scores were 0, and my FRAX score showed a 15.4% overall risk of fracture, with a 4.4% risk of a hip fracture in the next 10 years. Overall, my bone density went down 6.5% for my spine and 5% for my hip, compared to three years earlier.
My primary care physician has recommended starting bisphosphonates. My preference would be to postpone medication for at least a year, while I work with a dietician and a physical therapist to refine my exercise program and try to build bone more effectively. But I also don’t want to take foolish chances with a spine or hip fracture.
At my request, I received a referral to a specialist, but I cannot see her for four months.
How accurate are the results of a DXA scan? I have scoliosis from my childhood; could it affect the accuracy of the test results? Would any other imaging, blood or urine tests be appropriate to provide additional information or indicate if there are other causes of bone loss, besides age and gender?
ANSWER: The most important number here is the FRAX score, which combines your clinical risk (age, gender, height and weight, ethnicity, steroid use, smoking, previous fractures, alcohol use, etc.) and your bone density results from your DXA scan to provide an estimate of the overall fracture risk. It also provides an estimate of the most dangerous type of fractures: hip fractures. It’s freely available at frax.shef.ac.uk/FRAX/tool.aspx.
Your results are above the recommended threshold for medication, which is either a total-fracture risk of 20% or a hipfracture risk of 3%. Among the different options, most experts would choose a bisphosphonate drug like alendronate, based on decades of experience and strong data. However, a very low T-score (worse than -3) makes some experts choose a different type of agent -- a PTH analogue like teriparatide. Your scores have dropped a lot quickly, so I definitely recommend treatment.
I do understand why you are hesitant. These drugs can cause more harm than good when they are not used correctly, and many of my patients are concerned after reading others’ experiences. But when used properly, generally for three to five years, they are very good at preventing fractures.
Scoliosis can affect the accuracy of DXA tests, but the tests usually underestimate the severity of osteoporosis in people with scoliosis. Furthermore, the fact that both your hip and spine have osteoporosis makes the diagnosis pretty certain. A Z-score of 0 means your bone density is at a level that is expected for your age and sex. This means that a secondary cause is unlikely; however, the T-score still indicates osteoporosis. Four months may seem like a long time, but it’s entirely reasonable to wait on deciding the optimal medication until you see the expert. She is likely to do additional testing and give you more personalized information.

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last anksgiving, we had the scare of our life. Our little dog “Mamie” jumped onto the counter and ate a huge amount of the stuffing that I had just scooped out of the turkey! She got sick almost immediately and threw up, but because she kept drooling a erward I rushed her to an emergency vet. Mamie spent a few days at the vet getting supportive care because the ingredients in the stuffing affected her so badly. She’s completely recovered now, but please warn your readers to keep pets away from the kitchen and dining room during holiday festivities. -- Paul and Diane G., Norwood, Massachusetts

Cats make wonderful pets. Cats have not undergone major changes since being domesticated, and their ancient characteristics still make them desirable companions to this day.
DEAR PAUL & DIANE: I am so relieved to hear that Mamie is OK! As you noted, many of the delicious, rich foods we eat during anksgiving and Christmas contain ingredients that are poisonous to dogs and cats. Onions are one culprit, but garlic, avocados, grapes (and raisins), macadamia nuts and chocolate can also cause serious illness and death if ingested. Foods or candies sweetened with xylitol can be deadly to pets. Alcohol and caffeine can also sicken them.
While preparing the feast, keep pets out of the kitchen. When guests arrive and you begin to serve treats and drinks, that’s the time to sequester your pets for the duration. Place them in a quiet room with water, treats and their favorite toys. is keeps them calm and allows you to focus on your guests. It also prevents them from getting into foods that could harm them.
Finally, for pet owners who think, “My big dog ate a chocolate bar once and it didn’t hurt him at all” -- it’s a bad idea to assume that your dog isn’t at risk because they got through an earlier scare unscathed. Protect your pets this holiday season, and enjoy many more to come.

CHIMNEY/REPAIR
POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS
Leaf spot
The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.
