Receiving a diploma is something to take seriously, even for those students who are somewhat older than their fellow graduates. In 2003, Gustava Bennett Burrus graduated from Richmond High School outside of San Fransisco, Calif., at the age of 97. Ruth Hayes Green graduated from the Adult High School of the Perth Amboy, New Jersey Adult Education Center in 2010 at age 98. In 2013, 106-year-old Fred Butler, a student at Beverly High School in Massachusetts, received his high school diploma. He broke the Guinness World Record for oldest graduate previously held by Allan Stewart of Australia, who received a Bachelor of Laws degree at age 91 from the University of New England, New South Wales, Australia.
DID YOU KNOW?
DatafromtheUnitedStatesDepartment of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

* On July 12, 1979, disco music died at Chicago’s Comiskey Park when would want to blow up their records:
With our crazy spring weather, with several frosts, a drought followed by massive rainfall, should I worry about my garden?
Does anyone remember a “normal” weather year? Not in recent history, it seems, but this year is a doozy! Looking back at the temperature swings we’ve had this year, January through April each had close to or more than half the month with highs at least 10 degrees above the average range. May went the other way, with half thenightsreachingtemperatures at least 10 degrees below average and, in W. Bloomfield where I live, three solid frosts that month. June’s temperatures seem to hover close to average, which is a bit of a relief.
Looking at precipitation, again it has been all over the map. Generally speaking, though, we had very little snoworrainJanuarythroughthefirst week of June. Between Friday, 6/9 and Wednesday 6/14, we received over two inches of rain! Crazy, right?
As I told our Farm Manager, Mike Kincaid, we can always count on a gully-washer right as the peonies start to flower, but this has been an exceptional amount of rain in just a few days.
So,howdoesallof thesetemperature and precipitation swings affect our plants? For established plants you should not need to worry. They have reserves of food to help them through stressful times. If we go back to very dry conditions, which we most likely will over the next couple of months, you may want to supplement watering plants with higher water needs, such as hydrangeas. With newly planted material, of course, you will want to be sure to add water as needed. We like to see the plants get about an inch of water per week – a small investment in a rain gauge is money well spent to help you know how much water your plants have gotten. And remember, when we do get a gully-washer, most of that rain runs off before it can percolate into the soil. Sometimes the best measure of moisture is to stick your finger in the soil and judge by feel.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS
Hiking: Hiking provides a great workout and an ideal opportunity to spend time in an idyllic setting. The U.S. National Park Service notes that hiking helps individuals build stronger muscles and bones, improves their sense of balance, has a positive effect on heart health, and can decrease the risk of certain respiratory problems. Hiking is an especially attractive outdoor activity for seniors,as many parks feature trails with varying degrees of difficulty, ensuring there’s a trail for seniors whether they’re seasoned or novice hikers.
