While few people will think twice about aging a top-quality red wine, they may be less apt to place a white in their cellars. However, there is little reason not to. There are a number of white wines that age well, including white Bordeaux, Burgundy, and German wines, and that have proven track records. Another white wine that ages well is Champagne. This bubbly drink’s high acidity and carbon dioxide content act as preservatives as the wine ages in the bottle prior to disgorgement. Those who set their champagne aside for aging can expect it to lose some of its carbonation and turn a deeper color. The flavors will evolve into dried fruit, nutty, honey and toasty flavors.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

Few drivers start thinking about resale value w hen driving a new car off of the dealership lot for the first time. Still enamored w ith that new car smell, drivers can be excused for not thinking of resale value as they put the pedal to the metal and speed off in their brand new ride. But it’s never too early to start protecting a vehicle’s resale value, especially if you hope to recoup as much of your vehicle investment as possible w hen the time comes to sell your car or trade it in for a new er model.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

SIMPLE FIX FOR CROOKED TEETH When teeth are crooked, chipped, or overlapping, individuals may hesitate or even forego visiting the dentist or orthodontist in the belief that treatment would be too expensive. The fact is, however, that damaged and outof-position teeth can often be remedied without orthodontic treatment, veneers, or crowns. The cosmetic technique known as “tooth reshaping and contouring” is a minimally invasive, relatively inexpensive procedure that involves removal of a small bit of tooth enamel in order to alter the length, shape, or position of teeth. The treated teeth are then polished for a smooth finish. Tooth reshaping and contouring is most often used on the upper front incisors and canines, but may also be employed to correct bite imbalances involving the molars.

Feel free to contact us with any questions about correcting crooked teeth or to schedule a consultation. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we believe it is our responsibility to share our acquired knowledge and understanding of oral health with each and every patient. Our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246 to schedule your next dental checkup. Let us help you keep that winning smile. We accept most insurance. P.S. Tooth reshaping and contouring can be used to give teeth a more feminine or masculine shape simply by rounding or squaring their edges.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can Heart Surgery Cause Hot Flashes? DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had hot flashes, similar to those experienced by post-menopausal women, ever since my coronary bypass in 1990. I can be sitting quietly in a chair reading or at my computer, and suddenly I find myself dripping with perspiration. I also have had panic attacks, with increased heart rate and other physical symptoms. A few years ago, a 24-hour EKG showed heartrhythm irregularities and that my heart stopped briefly while asleep. If these idiosyncrasies of my autonomic nervous system are a consequence of my time on the heart-lung machine for the bypass, I’m not complaining -- just curious. You said that studies have been done on almost everything. Is this one? -- W.S.B. ANSWER: I found that a lot of people complain of similar symptoms. I also found that indeed, the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that regulates temperature, sweat, blood pressure and many other critical aspects of body function without our being consciously aware of it) can be adversely affected by cardiac surgery. Some authors have suggested that the autonomic nervous system changes are one mechanism by which people are more likely to have depression after cardiac surgery. I found several possible explanations why the ANS changes with bypass surgery, but no clear consensus. I would want to be sure that there are no other causes of these symptoms. It sounds like you have had an extensive evaluation, but I certainly would be concerned about a sudden fast heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart rhythm disturbances in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered a long time with GERD. I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous disease. My doctor recommended a procedure called a Nissen fundoplication. Since the procedure, I have not had heartburn again. I would do it again, after what I went through. I get an endoscopy every two years to keep an eye on my disease. -- G.D.B. ANSWER: Barrett’s esophagus is a complication of longstanding reflux. It is diagnosed when the lining of the esophagus starts to look like the lining of the stomach. Barrett’s esophagus can progress to cancer of the esophagus. About 0.2 percent of those with Barrett’s per year will develop cancer, which sounds low, but if you live with the condition for 25 years, that’s about a 5 percent risk. Surgery for reflux disease is done only rarely. However, it is very effective (85 percent to 90 percent). The most common reason to consider surgery is inadequate relief from medications and lifestyle changes. However, severe erosions from acid in the esophagus, inability to take medications, a stricture (partial closure) of the esophagus and Barrett’s esophagus are all reasons to consider surgery. Surgery appears to reduce the risk of cancer more than other treatments.

Simple Ways to Manage Pain To help reduce and prevent pain, try these easy tips to keep you doing the things you love while helping minimize pain and keeping that spring in your step this winter: Sit Tall: If you have a desk job, proper posture can help to reduce back pain as you age. Sit with your back straight with your shoulders back; distribute your body weight evenly on both hips, bend your knees at right angles and keep your feet flat on the floor. Be Flexible: Whether it’s weekly yoga, or standing up and stretching between long periods of sitting, flexibility can help you stay fit and strong. One simple stretch: stand with your feet shoulder width apart, place hands on your lower back with finger tips pointing down, slowly lean back as far as comfortable while looking up at the ceiling, then return to start. Repeat five times. Eat Smart: Reduce the risk of inflammation by incorporating antiinflammatory foods such as tomatoes, olive oil, nuts, fatty fish, fruits and vegetables into your diet as much as possible.

Kendall Students Learn About Immigrant Experience Day Teachers on the Kendall Eighth-Grade Junior High Team recently organized an Immigrant Experience Day for their students. Eighth-grade students had read stories by immigrants from other countries and studied the history of immigration in the United States. They had an opportunity to hear a first-hand account of immigration from a Kendall staff member and sampled ethnic food from many countries. The Immigrant Experience Day is part of the eighth-grade team’s method of finding new ways to incorporate what the students are learning into their lives. Interdisciplinary units allow the students to better retain ideas and concepts that they are learning in the classroom, and it gives the students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and apply it to different subjects. Students listened to the personal story of Mirjam Bauer, a counselor in the high school, who became a naturalized United States citizen after her time spent here as an exchange student. She shared her experiences of adapting to the culture of the United States and her ties with her family in Holland. Bauer also shared the process involved in becoming a citizen and the citizenship test that she had to take. Eighth-graders in Marlene MaglioccoMorrow’s ELA class read “Inside Out & Back Again” by Thanhha Lai, a critically acclaimed novel about a young Vietnamese girl who flees Saigon during its fall. Students in Morgan Engelbert’s social studies class studied immigration and the social and

Students sample immigrant foods political ramifications experienced by those who come to the United States. Gretchen Rosales’ Spanish 8 students read “The Circuit: stories from the life of a migrant child” by Francisco Jimenez, which details the story of a young child trying to find his voice in society and highlights his struggle to belong. Members of the eighth-grade team also brought in food from cultures that represent their ancestry and heritage. Math teacher Kaitlyn Curtis made German chocolate cookies; MaglioccoMorrow prepared antipasto; Rosales made Mexican rice; and science teacher David Heffron provided tortilla chips and salsa. The students were excited to try ethnic foods and many were surprised that they enjoyed the different tastes from around the world.

Cereal Sundaes Healthy cereal sundaes are simple to make and fun to eat. Start with a base: plain yogurt which is loaded with beneficial probiotics. Then, set out a variety of healthy toppings and let everyone in the family customize their breakfast sundae. Bran cereal, fresh or dried fruit, chopped unsalted nuts and a drizzle of raw honey will gear you up for a great day.

The Memorial Day Detachment # 468 of the Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who participated in the Toys For Tots campaign for 2015. We appreciate the organizations and businesses who participated as drop off points and the generosity of everyone in Ontario and Livingston Counties who donated toys. We were able to collect and distribute 4,000 toys through our participating agencies. A lot of children had a great Christmas because of all of you. Thank you and we look forward to 2016. On Monday, December 29th I was in Denny’s in Batavia alone having breakfast. I am a widow of 20 years plus and dine alone quite often, and across from

me a beautiful family were also having breakfast. A husband and wife and I assume their daughter who had 2 beautiful well behaved twin daughters. They left before I did; they glanced over and gave me a nice smile. After they left the waitress came over and told me they had paid for my breakfast. I don’t know if they are local or just passing through. I just want to say Thank You to them. I will pass it on. A Grateful Senior Citizen The residents of Lakeville Estates want to give a huge THANK YOU to all the local merchants who were so generous with their donations of gift cards and merchandise to use as door prizes at our Community Christmas Party. Gratefully Yours, Residents of Lakeville Estates Hats off to Caledonia Mayor Debbie Davis for securing a third grant for the culverts on Mill Street. As a tax payer it’s encouraging to see our federal & state tax dollars put back into our community & not always others. Keep up the good work!!!

Cat overpopulation is not a cat problem, it’s a people problem. People caused it, people can fix it. All cats deserve a home and love; they should not be living wild outside. Preparing for hospice care Sometimes patients succumb to a disease, in spite of the best treatments and support. When the time comes for a family to confront a loved one’s declining health, hospice care can be a dignified way to make that person’s final days as comforting as possible. Hospice is a type of care designed to make the final moments of a person’s life as pain-free and manageable as possible. It can take place in a medical facility, but very often hospice care occurs at home or wherever the ill person feels most comfortable. Hospice care is usually the last step when all other options have been exhausted. Making the decision to move a loved one to hospice care can be an emotionally wrenching time. Decisions such as these may be better made at a time in a person’s life when he or she is not sick. That is why living wills that spell out details for end-of-life care can be quite valuable. Decisions are made with a level head and not wrought with emotions. Such living wills also can take the pressure off of family members who may not feel comfortable making such decisions on their own or in concert with relatives. Hospice is a type of care and a philosophy that focuses on the palliative care of terminally ill patients. Rather than providing medication to try to treat the illness, medicine is offered to make a person more comfortable and remove any pain. Psychological therapy may also be offered to help the person come to terms with the end of life. Although hospice is a concept that has gradually evolved since the 11th century, the principles of modern hospice care can trace their roots to the 1950s and Dame Cicely Saunders, a nurse and social worker who is known as the creator of the hospice movement. If hospice care is outlined in a dying person’s living will or expressed wishes, there are some guidelines that can be followed by the sick individual. • Visit various medical care centers to see if away-fromhome options provide the care and environment you desire. Be sure to establish what type of hospice care you prefer. This may

include care within a nursing home or hospital, or in the comfort of your own home. • Sign a medical durable power of attorney. This signed document gives authority to an adult age 18 or older, who then has the right to make necessary medical and healthcare decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated. • Clearly indicate your wishes regarding resuscitation. A signed document may alert emergency healthcare personnel or others of your wishes not to be resuscitated. This document must be signed by you and a doctor and witnessed by others. • Decide on the duration of care. Hospice care generally lasts six months. This enables a long stretch of palliative care. Should you live beyond the time period, hospice care can continue. Studies have shown that patients who receive hospice care for at least 30 to 60 days gain greater benefit than those who are placed in hospice only in their final days. • Investigate financial options for hospice. Medicare and Medicaid provide hospice coverage in 44 states. Many private insurance plans have a hospice benefit as well. Understand how payment is made to figure out if private funding will be necessary. Not all hospice programs are the same. Certain core models of care are followed by many hospice facilities, but options vary. Hospice can provide comfort in a person’s final days and help sufferers better enjoy life and time spent with loved ones in these last days.

Marine Biology Marine biologists study the behavior and ecology of plants and animals that live in the ocean. An all-encompassing field, marine biology requires students and even existing professionals study and learn about several different disciplines of oceanography, including chemical oceanography, physical oceanography and geological oceanography. Oftentimes, marine biologists specialize in a particular area, whether it’s a specific species of marine life or an ecosystem. One growing area of specialization is marine biotechnology, which involves marine biologists in the development and testing of drugs that come from marine organisms.

Learn How to Set a Goal (NewsUSA) - To paraphrase Mark Twain, “Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times.” Setting a goal, whether it be to lose weight, earn a promotion or spend more time with your family, is easy -- it’s carrying through that proves problematic. And yet, the world’s most successful people are intensely goal-orientated. They know what they want, and they focus on achieving it every day. So what’s the difference between a top executive and everybody else? “The fact is that successful people fail far more than unsuccessful people,” says Brian Tracy, a top management consultant, in a recent Q&A with SUCCESS Magazine. “Successful people try more things, fall down, pick themselves up and try again -over and over before they finally win.” So how can you learn to quit giving up on your goals? SUCCESS Magazine offers the following tips for more successful goal-setting: - Write down a list of goals. Cynthia Kersey, author of “Unstoppable: 45 Powerful Stories of Perseverance and Triumph from People Just Like You,” suggests focusing on how you want to be remembered. “List the qualities, deeds and characteristics for which you would like to be remembered by your friends, spouse, children, co-workers, the community and even the world.” - Set out a plan to accomplish your goals. Tracy suggests listing what little steps will take you to your goal, then organizing them by priority and sequence. Figure out how much time and money you will need to accomplish your goals, and revisit and revise your plan accordingly.

R evolutionizing THE WAY Y OU THINK ABOUT

Funeral S ervices From our modern, one-of-a-kind facility, to helping you honor the memory of your loved one by telling their unique life story - we are revolutionizing funeral service in Genesee County. 1. We believe in earning your business, as we know you have many options. You deserve nothing less than our very best every day. No exceptions.

2. You are not a customer or a number. We are here to serve you and your family as special friends to help you through a difficult time.

5. We want it to be special because they deserve it to be special. We take as much time as necessary to make you completely comfortable with the plan.
