Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Today’s auto manufacturers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instances, roof racks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

www.landltransmissions.com Winter Emergency Kit: In case of emergencies, you may get stuck or need to spend time in your car waiting for help. Make sure that your vehicle is equipped to handle a wide range of scenarios. Always be sure to carry a tire gauge, jack and fully inflated spare. If you get stuck, you’ll be glad to have a shovel and gravel, salt or a small piece of carpet for traction. Jumper cables or even a portable charger can help address battery related problems. Maximize your safety with emergency flares and a firstaid kit. In addition, stash a small supply of non-perishable food and water, as well as warm clothes or a blanket, especially if you’ll be driving lesser-traveled roads.

INSULATED SIDING CAN KEEP YOUR HEAT W HERE IT BELONGS -- INSIDE! If you w ere hit by the “ polar vortex” that brought subzero temperatures to more than half of the continental U.S., it w as a good reminder that the best w ay to stay w arm w as to dress in layers. The same is true for houses. Today’s homeow ners looking for w ays to improve their home’s energy performanc e are increasingly choosing insulated siding -- vinyl siding w ith rigid foam insulation that is laminated or permanently attached to the panel. Think of it as adding an extra layer to w ard off the cold. M ost exterior w alls have insulation in betw een the w all studs but allow significant energy loss through the studs themselves, w hic h are poor insulators. This is called “ thermal bridging.” Insulated siding improves energy effic ienc y by reducing thermal bridging. Like a blanket, it is continuous insulation over the studs, w hic h helps homes stay w arm in w inter and cool in summer. Designed to reach higher levels of rigidity, stability and thermal resistanc e -- “ R-value” -insulated siding is subject to an array of regulations, standards and third-party quality assurance tests that determine how it is manufactured and marketed. Due to that rigor, a number of building and energy-efficiency programs have recognized that insulated siding qualifies as home insulation. In addition, it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a building product that c an help qualify homes under the Energy Star Qualified Homes Program.

Have you lost your
local insurance agency? BATAVIA - Has your local insurance company gone out of business or been sold to a larger company? Or do you feel like your current rates are higher than they should be? No matter the reason, when you’re looking for a new insurance agency, the advantages to staying with a small, local agency are hard to argue against. In the world of insurance, customer service is very important. When dealing with a smaller local agency, customers can walk into the office or call and ask for their agent by name. With larger companies, that’s not always possible, and if they are not local – good luck. Good customer service is a huge reason why households and drivers sign up with a local agency over a large national chain. Accountability is another reason. Because customers of smaller insurance agencies know who they’re talking to, there’s more accountability, which is also critical for insurance agreements. An insurance policy rests on that accountability, because the customers are paying toward the day when a claim needs to be made. Submitting a claim is a far more comfortable experience when you’re dealing with someone you know and trust. Because it is true that the process of submitting a claim can be intimidating and if it’s the situation of a car accident it can be exacerbated by injuries that can make it even worse. Particularly with a stranger or unfamiliar person. Having a concrete agreement with a local shop is one of the best ways to get peace of mind regarding your insurance.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
WHITE TEETH HELP TRIGGER SMILES According to recent research, laughter stimulates strong brain activity in listeners, particularly in the areas that control the muscles of the face, and prompts them to smile and laugh back. Simply put, laughter and smiling are contagious. Of course, no one really needs a scientific study to tell us something that we already know to be true-that a smiling face tends to attract attention and delightful responses. However, the unfortunate fact is that many people are so self-conscious about the condition of their teeth that they deprive themselves of this important asset. If you are concerned about the whiteness of your smile, professional tooth whitening by the dentist provides the safest and most effective way to brighten your smile. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we feel a deep responsibility and
commitment to provide you the very best care with proficiency. Good dental health is no accident. We will make suggestions to help you maintain good oral health and fend off tooth discoloring. With proper home care and professional supervision, there is no reason why a person can’t enjoy the comforts of good dental health well into later life. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. P.S. In-office bleaching or laser bleaching gives the quickest tooth-whitening results. At-home bleaching supervised by the dentist provides similar results over a longer stretch of time.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is an 84-year-old diabetic. He has had a wound on his foot (on the inner side of his right foot, near his big toe) for about five months. He has been treated by a podiatrist, who has debrided the wound every week. He prescribed antibiotics when the wound has looked infected. A visiting nurse and my mother have changed and dressed the wound regularly during these months. This week, the podiatrist said he could see the bone in my dad’s foot, and recommended hyperbaric treatment. Could you tell me what your opinion is of this treatment in my father’s case? Do you know if it has a high percentage of success? -- C.O. ANSWER: Foot ulcers in diabetes are common and feared. Diabetes damages blood vessels, both large and small. Also, longstanding diabetes decreases the effectiveness of the inflammatory response and immune system. Finally, poor nerve function in people with diabetes combines with these other factors to predispose one to developing breakdown of the skin and development of ulcers. These ulcers can get large and deep, and when the bone is visible (and sometimes even when it’s not), the bone is infected. In this case, there is a high risk of the need for amputation. By far, the best way to deal with diabetic foot ulcers is to not get them in the first place. Good control of diabetes, proper footwear, regular checks by a professional and daily self-checks of the feet for people at high risk can reduce the likelihood of developing ulcers. Early and aggressive treatment of precursor lesions, even mild redness of the skin, ingrown toenails or fungal infection of the feet, should prompt urgent evaluation by a podiatrist. Once the ulcer has progressed to the point where your dad’s is now, aggressive measures are called for. In addition to care by a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon, evaluation by a vascular surgeon and a wound-management specialist may be limb- and even lifesaving. While hyperbaric oxygen has indeed been shown to be beneficial in several studies (reducing amputation rate from 33 percent to 9 percent in one study), only an expert with detailed knowledge of your dad’s case can decide whether this is appropriate treatment. If you trust your podiatrist, I think it may well be a useful treatment. However, I would be sure that he, or a vascular surgeon, has looked at the quality of blood flow to the foot. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your position on the shingles vaccine for people in their 70s? We have been told that some doctors do not approve of it. Yet we know of so many people who suffered terribly from shingles. Thank you. -- J.T. ANSWER: I’ve written about the vaccine lots of times. I am a strong believer in it and think anyone over 60 should get it unless they have a medical reason not to. The older you are, the more important it is to get the shot, since the complication of pain (postherpetic neuralgia) is so devastating and tends to lasts longer the older you are. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Yee Haw! Elementary Students Pledge To Read 25,000 Books This Year The third-annual Reading Celebration at Byron-Bergen Elementary School got off to rollicking start with a farmyardthemed event on November 20. Students were in the mood, wearing straw cowboy hats, overalls, and bandannas. Teachers dressed as cows, pigs, and singing farmhands hit the stage to build excitement for the challenge ahead: reading 25,000 books (almost 50 per student) before the end of the school year. Students have consistently surpassed their reading goals since the challenge began in 2013; last year beating their target of 20,000 books by almost 4,000.

Reading is fun at Byron-Bergen Elementary School and a new book makes the day complete for student Mace Tyson.
“Reading really is fun. We want kids to enjoy it and develop the reading habit now while they are young,” said Principal Brian Meister. “The motivation this year is the promise of a very special farm-themed reward in June. We’ll make all their hard work pay off in an event to remember.” The assembly kicked off with ByronBergen parent Alyson Tardy, her back-up teacher/singers and the student population singing and dancing to “Read a Book” – a special version of Taylor Swift’s song “Shake It Off.” Then Assistant Principal Amanda Cook played the starring role in a skit based on “Little Pig Joins the Band,” a favorite children’s book by David Hyde Costello. Things got even more boisterous with an

Disappointed about my home town; when I drive through our town, it makes me sad. Our Christmas wreaths are pathetic. I have been to a lot of towns that look amazing, but when I drive in my town all I want to say is omg.... The wreaths are puny and half are not even lit. Shame on you for even putting them up; this town does not put any effort at all to make it look welcoming. If I did not live here I would just drive on. Please, next year, put some effort in to making our town nice. Again, shame on you and I think you all know what town I am talking about. To the person who stole our Siamese kitten/cat on Saturday 12-26: What were you thinking? She was loved and taken care of. Please return her! Just drop her off like you took her. Broken hearts in Bristol Thank you to those who throughout the Christmas Holiday wished everyone a “Merry Christmas.” I’m so sick of the political correctness. A right hand turn is a smooth motion...no reason to come to a screeching halt and look 4 ways!! To those with roadside memorials...We are truly sorry for your loss but “take it to the grave.” Imagine if everyone set up roadside memorials....there would be no place to walk. Leaving them up for 3 to 5 years or replenishing them is not fair to the community. That’s what grave sites are for and what YOU paid for; please move your memorials to the grave and out of public domain.

Your Renovations for senior safety As adults approach their golden years, the homes they once thought of as sanctuaries can become unsafe. Families wrestle with the decision to keep parents and grandparents in their homes or move them into assisted living facilities or other senior residences. Modifying seniors’ homes to make them safer is another option. The National Institute on Aging says that families may be able to have a senior stay at home by helping older relatives remain independent but safe. The following are a few ways to do just that. • Remove fall hazards. The NIA reports that six out of 10 falls happen at home, where people spend the most time and fail to think about their safety. Seniors who want to be independent may overestimate their physical abilities. Because falls can be so dangerous, leading to cuts, abrasions, broken bones, and more, seniors and their families must take steps to prevent falls in homes. Improve lighting, especially at night when sight may become diminished. Install hand rails and grab bars where possible. Pick up clutter and remove tripping hazards, such as slippery rugs or electric cords. Install an electric stair climbing seat to make traversing stairs less risky. • Improve visibility and ability to communicate. Vision loss may accompany aging, but technology can help mitigate such losses. Use big-button phones, remote controls and even keyboards so seniors can keep in touch. Voice-activated thermostats or smart home technology also can make it easier for seniors to voice their needs. • Modify fixtures and other features. Dexterity may wane with age, and arthritis can make grasping or turning doorknobs and faucets more challenging. Take inventory of areas of the home that present the biggest obstacles to seniors.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Jan. 28, 1973, a cease-fire goes into effect in Saigon, Vietnam, but military operations quickly resumed after each side claimed the other had violated the truce. What resulted was an almost endless chain of retaliations, averaging 2,980 combat incidents per month.

Replace knobs in the shower or on faucets with lever handles, which are easier to maneuver. Install new cabinets and doors that freely glide open and self-close. Replace toggle light switches with easier paddle-type switches that can be pushed with a hand or even arm. Motion-sensor lights also can be handy. Push-button oven controls may make cooking easier. • Prepare for medical emergencies. Invest in medical alert systems, such as necklaces or bracelets, that can be used to contact police or emergency medical personnel directly. Make phones available in commonly used rooms in the home, such as bedrooms, the living room, bathrooms, and the kitchen. • Install ramps and nonslip flooring. Ramps can make it easier to reach the front door or cross over elevated doorway thresholds. Nonslip flooring also can prevent falls around the house, offering more traction for feet, walkers or canes. • Repair cracks in walkways and driveways. Safety should also extend to the outdoors. Be sure to repair cracks or uneven pavement. Replace loose patio blocks or bricks with a more stable design or with concrete or asphalt. While outdoors, trim back bushes and make sure there are no tripping hazards outside as well. A few modifications can make it possible for seniors to live comfortably in their homes for many years.

Prepare your home to sell • Do a deep cleaning. Whether a cleaning service is hired or the homeowner does it himself, tackling necessary cleaning projects could make the home shine. Now is the time to wash the windows, shampoo the carpets, regrout the bathrooms, and tackle all of those messes that could compromise a sale. • Add a fresh coat of paint. If walls are bright colors or eclectic, it could pay to paint rooms in more neutral shades to appeal to the masses. Just be aware that some buyers are suspicious of paint, especially freshly painted ceilings. They may think a homeowner is trying to hide something, usually water stains. • Keep the home updated. While one doesn’t have to follow every trend, ensuring the home is ageless can make for a better sell. So if the cabinets scream 1985 and the bathroom is circa 1967, it could be time to do some updating.
