Twice now, driving on public roads, cars are stopped by parents standing in the road begging for money for their kids’ cheerleading groups. Big threatening amazon type women stand in the middle of the road and push money containers into drivers’ faces, while mean spirited hulk type men stop cars on the other side of the road. Come on parents, pay for your own kids’activities instead of harassing motorists for money. The town should not allow this begging on public roads. If cheerleaders need money, let them work for it. Motorists should not be forced into giving money by threatening parents shoving money containers in their faces. Being a school bus driver I see this a lot and it needs to stop. Drivers--stop making new rules for the road. Do not stop in the road and flag a bus to proceed if they are turning left when you are going straight. YOU have the right of way--use it. You may think you are being helpful but you are not. You are creating a dangerous situation for everyone on the road. There are rules for a reason-so

everyone knows what the other driver is doing. When you do this no one knows what’s going on. Why are you making your own driving rules? I will (and have) sat for as long as it takes for you to do what you are supposed to be doing. Unless you have the authority to wave me on, then stop doing it.
To the long-haired, bearded, dirty fellow cheering on the team, GROW UP!! Let the coaches coach!! You not only look like an idiot, you are acting like an idiot. Really, who are you trying to impress? Also, brush your teeth and shower. You are not fooling anyone when you smell like a special chimney!!

Vision loss is a common condition, as the World Health Organization notes that more than 285 million people across the globe suffer some type of visual impairment. Many people can effectively counter their vision problems with prescription lenses, but others may have a more significant issue, such as low vision. The Kellogg Eye Center defines low vision as a reduced level of vision that cannot be fully corrected with conventional glasses. Those with low vision have some useful sight and are not considered completely blind. However, low vision can interfere with performance of daily activities, and some people with this condition are classified as “legally blind.” Symptoms of low vision include difficulty recognizing objects at a distance or problems with differentiating colors. Yet, not everyone dealing with these symptoms has low vision. Specialized testing can determine if a person has low vision or another condition. Many conditions can impact sight and contribute to vision loss. Here’s a look at some of the more common ones. • Glaucoma: A person with glaucoma may gradually lose peripheral vision. Early symptoms, such as a subtle loss of contrast, may be unnoticeable. Eventually, glaucoma may cause tunnel vision, which occurs when a person can only see through a small window. • Macular degeneration: Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than 10 million people in the United States alone, according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. The AMDF offers that macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the retina’s central portion, known as the macula. The macula is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it
contributes to one’s ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors and see objects in fine detail. • Retinal detachment: An increase of floaters or sudden flashes of light in vision may be indicative of retinal detachment or a tear in the retina. When caught promptly, a detached retina may be repaired. However, if left untreated and the detachment reaches the macula in the center of the retina, vision loss may be irreparable. The National Eye Institute says those with extreme nearsightedness, those who have had cataract surgery or those with a family history of retinal detachment are at a high risk. • Diabetic retinopathy: Blurring or patchy vision loss can be a side effect of high blood glucose levels. Not all people with diabetes will develop vision problems, but it is common enough to warrant attention. • Cataracts: According to The Mayo Clinic, a cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Cataracts develop when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up the eyes’ lenses. Clouded vision can make it more difficult to read or drive. Over time, cataracts may obscure vision so much that they require surgical repair. Routine eye examinations can bring potential vision disturbances to light and facilitate faster treatment. Eye doctors also can make suggestions about lifestyle changes, including the use of optical devices to improve sight.

Barb Van Volkenberg is my Everyday Angel. I have witnessed and been in awe of the wonderful care she and her husband have given her mentally handicapped brother for 30+ years. Barb was there for a good friend she lost to cancer and is now being very supportive of a friend with Alzheimer’s, whom she calls, visits and takes out often. She is also there for another friend with Parkinson’s. I hope I never have to deal with a major illness, but if I do, I’ll be lucky to have Barb as one of my friends. I also have other friends who are there for their families and friends in need. I’m sure others do, too. Many thanks to all of these Everyday Angels! Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

While this white varietal wine does not have a name that exacly rolls off the tongue, “Grüner Veltliner” has citrusy flavors, herbaceous notes, and a characteristic hint of white pepper that makes it unique. Naturally high in acidity, and full-bodied in texture, Grüner Veltliner is often seen as an exotic alternative to Sauvignon Blanc and even Chardonnay. The crisp, spicy, versatile wine comes to us almost exclusively from Austria, where it is that nation’s most planted grape. The style produced in the wine region of Weinviertel is light, fresh, and full of lemon and grapefruit flavors, while Grüner Veltliner, from the warmer regions of Wachau, Kremstal, and Kamptal, has more spice, body, and complexity. The choice is yours.

Making Your Resolutions Work By Joseph Langen New Year’s resolutions often fail because toxic emotions and experiences from our past can sabotage us or keep us stuck with the same old thoughts, patterns and regrets. ~ Debbie Ford Do you remember any of your New Year’s resolutions from last year? If so, how well did you do with them? Most of us who make resolutions are serious about keeping them, but somehow our resolve comes undone soon after the year gets underway. Making a resolution is a step toward some real changes. We usually start with an idea or perhaps a suggestion. We may move to a resolution. The final step is action. The road between intent and accomplishment seems long and dark, often littered with resolutions which don’t quite make it for one reason or another. Our bodies would be in better shape if we ate more sensibly or exercised more. We would feel more accomplished if we learned skills we promised ourselves we would practice. Feeling more prosperous would follow being more careful with our money. What happened to all these fine resolutions you made? Perhaps you acted impulsively, not considering whether you had the ability to follow through with them. Were they all that important to you in the first place?

Rather than latching onto the first resolution which comes to mind, you could stop to think before resolving. What have you learned about yourself over the last year? Did you discover or develop any new skills? Did you become more aware of your strengths or weaknesses in following through with changes? Did you learn there were things you couldn’t do? With these thoughts in mind, it should be easier to decide on a resolution which moves you along the road toward your life goals and uses strengths and skills you know you have. Once you have decided on a resolution, the next step is to keep it in mind as the year progresses. One possibility would be to write a few key words on our calendars on the first of each month, reminding you to stop and think about how you did with your resolution over the past month. It is also a chance to think about how you can refine your resolution over the next month. If a month is too long, try doing it once a week.
You might discover as you go along that you bit off more than you could chew and your resolution is somewhat too ambitious. Maybe you can work on part of the resolution this year and save the rest for next year. Maybe you will discover you don’t quite have the skills to carry off your resolution. A mini-goal could be to learn the necessary skills from someone more proficient than you are and then return to your resolution. Keeping track of your resolutions, progress and accomplishments will help you stay more focused on your long term goals, using your skills and strengths. You will become more aware of what you have to offer and learn to better appreciate yourself. Maybe next December you will be able to look back over the past year and see you have become a little more of the person you would like to be. Life Lab Lessons • Can you think of one resolution you made in past years? • How well did you do with it? • What would you most like to have different about yourself in the next few months? • Try that for a resolution. • Then track your progress putting it into practice. For more about Joe Langen’s writing, see his website at www.slidingotter.com.

Enjoy dining out w it h k ids Practice : Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “ Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time. Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually w orking their w ay up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place w here table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant w hen kids can handle it.

6 Fresh New Ways To Enjoy Potatoes (BPT) - Potatoes are the vegetable that take breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to the next level of yum. They are quick to disappear but also quick and easy to buy, prepare and serve. Not only are potatoes uber satisfying, but research published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition also shows that when prepared healthfully, they can be a part of a weight loss program-just call them the 9th Wonder of the World. If you’re looking for flavorful and nutritious dishes that can be part of your weight management plan, then look no further. Here’s a little inspiration for potato dishes sure to become favorites: DIY potato chips: This is a super easy and delicious recipe. Boil a russet potato and a few purple potatoes for 5 minutes, drain, dry and cut into thin slices. Toss the freshly cut slices in one beaten egg white. Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray and evenly space the chips throughout the pan. Bake slices at 400ºF for 35 minutes, turning halfway through. Top chips with sea salt. Season with new flavor favorites: Spice up your baked or roasted potatoes with healthy toppings that really raise the bar on nutrition and flavor. Start with a plain, thick and creamy yogurt and a good source of protein. If you’re serious about spice, try adding a tablespoon of Sriracha and orange juice to a halfcup of your yogurt, mix, and add a dollop to your potatoes. Love a Mediterranean flair? Top your taters with Greek yogurt mixed with lemon, garlic, roasted red peppers and oregano. Wholesome mashed potatoes: Mash your potatoes with a low-fat spread, Greek yogurt or skim milk for that creamy, delicious texture you love, without all the calories. Slim-belly baked potato bar: Families will love a baked potato bar. Top a baked potato with ground turkey, salsa and light sour cream for taco night, or top your potatoes with tomato sauce, turkey pepperoni, Italian blend shredded cheese and other veggies for a pizza-style delight. We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy THE FUTURE OF ROOT CANAL TREATMENT? Fifteen million “root canal” procedures are performed in this country annually. These procedures are undertaken when a tooth’s nerve becomes infected or the pulp (the soft material inside the tooth) becomes damaged and bacteria in the pulp chamber cause an infection or abscess. The goal is to preserve the tooth by removing the pulp, the nerve tissue, and blood vessels and replacing them with rigid natural latex produced from tree sap called “gutta percha.” Because traditional gutta percha cannot ward off residual infection and has limited rigidity, researchers have begun to test an improved version that includes nanodiamonds (tiny diamond particles from diamond mining) and antibiotics (amoxicillin). Future testing will reveal if the new formulation warrants wide-scale use.
Hearing “root canal” or “extraction” may send shivers down your spine. However, a smart dental patient will look logically at the pros and cons of each service. Join us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, located at 6 Batavia City Centre, and enjoy the benefits of professional and expert dental care. We invite you to call 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. Our goal is to help preserve your natural teeth for a lifetime. Let us help you smile. P.S. It is the abscessed pulp, not the root canal treatment itself, that is painful. Most people find the root canal procedure no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled.

DEAR DR. ROACH: How much good does it do for the body to just lie there with your eyes closed all night long when you can’t sleep? -- D.R. ANSWER: It doesn’t do much good at all; in fact, it causes harm, in that it makes it more likely for you to associate the bed as a place to stay awake. My advice is, if you are lying in bed and not sleeping, get up out of bed and do something. Listen to soft music. Read a book, as long as the light isn’t too bright. Write in your diary. When you feel like sleeping, get back into bed, but don’t stay there if you aren’t getting to sleep in 15 minutes or so and know that you aren’t going to. Getting a little high-intensity exercise during the day, avoiding caffeine after midday and staying away from naps are good ways to feel ready for sleep at bedtime. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had my thyroid removed for a goiter 35 years ago. My doctor put me on 100 mcg of thyroid medication; however, when I took it, I got sick. My hands shook, and my heart beat very quickly (over 100). So one doctor told me to split it, and take 50 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. I felt better, and I took it twice a day for 30 years. After menopause, a different doctor changed it to 88 mcg and said to take it one time a day. This is what I have been taking for five years, but I was feeling better and happier when I split the dose. My question is, can I split this medication? Does it make any different for the body if the TSH is normal? Does it make any difference what time of the day I take it? -- H.T. ANSWER: Many people do split the dose of thyroid hormone, especially if they are taking a type of thyroid, such as Armour, that contains T3. If 88 mcg is the dose that has the right amount of TSH (a hormone made by the pituitary that helps determine whether the dose is correct as far as your body is concerned) for you, then the TSH shouldn’t be affected by taking half the dose in the morning and half at night. Most people don’t find that it matters, but if it relieves your symptoms to take it twice a day, that’s OK. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a home health nurse. Many of my patients think that because something has been cooked and then refrigerated, it will stay good indefinitely! How long should you realistically keep food that is refrigerated? Thank you. -- S.C. ANSWER: Of course, the answer depends on the specific type of food, but a good rule of thumb is three to four days for cooked food. I found more exact recommendations at www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/storagetimes.html *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Nourish Your Body Many clinical studies show omega3 fatty acids, which are considered essential fatty acids, may protect adult eyes from dry eye syndrome. Omega-3s support healthy tear production and keep eyes moisturized. In addition to omega-3s, other ingredients like Vitamin A, D3, green tea and evening primrose oil can significantly accelerate the time it takes to feel relief. A formula like EyePromise EZ Tears, which contains nine soothing ingredients to target symptoms from the inside, offers rapid results with the dietary ingredients mentioned. Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

DID YOU KNOW ? Tw o of the keys to living longer may be spending more time w ith family and remaining socially engaged. According to research and the book, “ The How of Happiness,” by Sonja Lyubomirsky, long-lived cultures attribute their longevity to keeping people close. An analysis of three communities of very long-living people in Lyubomirsky’s book - Sardinians in Italy, Okinaw ans in Japan and Seventh-Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California - revealed that they all had five priorities in common. At the top of that list w ere “ Put family first” and “ Keep soc ially engaged.” Good friendships, deep relationships w ith family members and social engagement are essential to a long, happy life. This New Year’s Eve, more people may w ant to resolve to prioritize friends and family more than they already do. Not only can doing so deepen relationships, but it also can keep people healthier by reducing stress and the risk of developing illnesses related to depression and loneliness. Today is a great time to reconnect w ith members of the family and sc hedule a longaw aited visit.
