Shop Smart For Vintage Signs Antique shops are one venue for antique signs and coordinating pieces. Some sellers specialize in vintage signage. Antique stores are popular in many tourist towns and major cities, where more artistic neighborhoods tend to include one or more antique shops. If a particular antique store does not have what you are looking for, they may be able to secure certain pieces you desire from other vendors. Shoppers looking for antique signs also can purchase reproductions. There are many retailers that produce very good likenesses that may be considerably more affordable than the originals. You also can commission an artist to reproduce signage that fits with your design plans. Some research online or a query of artists in your community may yield prospects who can produce the sign you covet.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names to see who their valentines would be. They would wear the names on their sleeves for one week. The phrase “to wear your heart on your sleeve” may have begun during that period..
Some people believed that if a woman saw a robinflying overhead on Valentine’s Day, it meant she would marry a sailor and if she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a very rich person.

Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal. Save on Gas Fill up with a lower-octane gasoline. Buy the lowest grade or octane of gasoline that is appropriate for your car. Unless your car requires premium gasoline, filling up your car with high-octane fuel is a waste of money. That pricey premium fuel won’t boost your car’s fuel economy or performance in the least, so skip it. If you’re not sure what grade of fuel works best for your car, open up your owner’s manual and take a look. As long as your engine doesn’t knock or ping when you fuel up with regular unleaded, you’re good to drive on this much cheaper gas. Passing on pricey premium gasoline could save you hundreds of dollars a year.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Healthy Bodies Don’t Need Supplements

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
BACTERIUM LINKS GUM AND HEART DISEASES There has been a great deal of discussion in recent years about the link between gum disease and heart disease. Now, researchers have found the culprit responsible for this link. The bacterium known as “Porphyromonas gingivalis” is well known to dentists and periodontists for causing the development of “periodontitis,” the serious form of gum infection that damages soft tissues surrounding the teeth and attacks underlying bone. Teeth are often lost as a result. Researchers recently found that P. gingivalis also changes the code of the genes in proteins responsible for boosting inflammation and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) in coronary arteries. This finding gives everyone more reason to conscientiously brush, floss, and guard against gum disease. Periodontal disease is often silent, meaning symptoms may not
appear until an advanced stage of the disease. If you need answers to a dental problem, remember that at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’re committed to your best interests. Please call 585.343.4246 to schedule your next appointment. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurance. P.S. Studies previous to the one mentioned above found Porphyromonas gingivalis in the coronary artery plaques (cholesterol combined with fatty substances, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin) of heart-attack patients.

DEAR DR. ROACH: After viewing an infomercial that praised the benefits of probiotics, I would like to know what you think. Probiotics have been prescribed when one is taking antibiotics to replenish the good bacteria that is lost. When taking no medication, I found that when I took one capsule (30 billion live cultures per capsule/10 probiotic strains) on a daily basis, I would get gas and diarrhea; therefore, I stopped taking them. I thought that this was the exact opposite reaction that should have occurred. Please write about the pros and cons and the reasons/necessity for taking probiotics on a daily basis. -- D.A.M. ANSWER: Probiotics are microorganisms, usually bacteria or yeast, that have beneficial properties. There is at least some evidence to support the use of probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), colon inflammation from radiation, irritable bowel syndrome and other diseases of the GI tract. However, with a few exceptions, there is very little evidence that taking anything (prescription or supplement) is of benefit to people who are healthy with no symptoms. Probiotics haven’t been shown to benefit healthy people. Any treatment can have side effects. While there may be some benefits, such as preventing antibioticsassociated diarrhea, I hesitate before recommending any treatment to a healthy, asymptomatic person. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Does high blood pressure cause irregular or abnormal heart rhythms? -- P.K.S. ANSWER: Not usually. In some people with very longstanding high blood pressure, the heart can become dilated -- blown up like a balloon to much more than its normal size. When the heart, particularly the atria (the top chambers), becomes dilated like that, it makes atrial fibrillation more likely. High blood pressure is very common. Irregular heartbeats are universal -- we all have some every day. It is human nature to associate one problem with another, since they are both related to the heart. However, it’s more likely that the everyday irregularities you may have had without noticing take on new significance with a diagnosis of high blood pressure. That being said, since it is possible they are related, it’s certainly worth an EKG next time you see your internist or cardiologist to make sure you don’t have a dangerous heart rhythm. Sometimes doctors order 24-hour (or longer) EKGs for use at home, which can be correlated with any symptoms of heart irregularities. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart-rhythm disturbances in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6. Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have lower-back ache and have been seeing a chiropractor, which helps a little. Would yoga help? -- A. ANSWER: Yoga does help many people with back pain, but it’s important to find an instructor with experience with beginners and in using yoga specifically for back pain. Similarly, tai chi and Pilates exercises have been shown to be useful treatments for back pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Portion Size Tricks The average portion size has tripled in recent years, which could be the reason why many people are overweight or obese. A healthier diet often starts with eating less. Here are some easy ways to remember just how much to eat when sitting down at the dinner table. * A portion of lean meat should be about 3 ounces, or the size of a palm. * A cup of mixed greens or vegetables is about the size of a baseball. * A medium piece of fruit is the size of a tennis ball. * A CD is the size of the pancake you should eat. * An ounce of hard cheese is the size of a tube of lipstick. * Keep burgers to the size of a mayonnaise jar top. * A tablespoon of oil is the size of one checker. Online Safety Tips Here are some things kids can do to help prevent cyberbullying: - Protect your identity and reputation by being careful not to share your name, contact information, or pictures. - Realize that what is put in the digital world can stay there forever. Only post pictures that you would want your parents, peers and school to see. - Create secure passwords. Passwords should be easy to remember, hard to guess. If you have to write it down, it’s too hard to remember. If it’s a pet’s name, your middle name, your favorite sports team, etc., it’s too easy to guess. Remember, a combination of numbers and letters is always best. - Don’t share your passwords. Eighty-five percent of elementary school students and 70 percent of teens polled said they shared their password with at least one friend. That’s one friend too many. Friends can be cyberbullies too, signing onto your account, impersonating you and possibly embarrassing you. They can also change your password, locking you out of your account.

Your Scrapbooks can help document your year Many interesting and special events take place during the course of a typical year. While the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Rather than relegate birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and other such yearly events to the black hole of cyberspace, crafty men, women and children may want to display them in more prominent ways. Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can help people document various events over the course of the year. But scrapbooking can be much more than that as well. Scrapbooks can serve as valuable resources that speak to the way life once was. Such traditions are not new. Books highlighting family memorabilia, such as recipes, poems, letters, and illustrations, were popular in England as early as the 15th century. Even school yearbooks are a type of scrapbook, highlighting students and events in a single convenient book. The reasons for scrapbooking are the same today as they once were. Scrapbooks preserve memories, record family stories and pass down information through generations. Scrapbooks can even be customized in any manner their creators desire. For those who have resolved to devote more time to documenting happy times and special events in the year ahead, scrapbooking is a great way to do just that. Here’s how to make the process creative and successful. • Devote a box to “scraps.” At the beginning of the year, set aside a medium-sized box, such as a shoebox, that can store various items you want to include in your scrapbook. These may include ticket stubs, receipts, brochures from trips, or any other items you deem worth saving.
Corfu Meadows Apartments
Showcase the special memories of the year ahead by starting a scrapbook.
• Make time to scrapbook. Set aside a few days each month to go through collected items and organize them so you have an idea of what will be included on your pages. Every event may not make the final cut, but that’s up to you. • Indulge in some craft-store shopping. Not everyone has the time to design each scrapbook page from scratch. Fortunately, there are numerous pre-designed templates or slip-in pages that require little work on the part of scrapbookers. • Use your own handwriting. Handwritten sentiments can make the scrapbook even more meaningful. • Don’t overload with photos. Let one or two photos on a page best convey the emotions and stories. Create balance with white space, text and other accents. • Categorize your photos. Disorganized photos can make scrapbook creation more challenging and ultimately frustrating. Organize your photos by month and rely on cloud-based photo storage systems to keep them safe. Then, when you need them, you can print only those images you want to include in your book. • Have fun with the process. You have the entire year to create a beautiful scrapbook. Take your time and experiment with different ideas.

“Happy Holiday” (sometimes performed as “Happy Holidays”) is a popular song composed by Irving Berlin during 1941 and published the following year ... LONG before all this political correctness started! It was introduced by Bing Crosby in the 1942 film “Holiday Inn.” Commonly regarded as a Christmas song, it was performed on New Year’s Eve in the film and expressed a wish for the listener to enjoy “happy holidays” throughout the entire year. The song helped to popularize the phrase “Happy holidays” as a common greeting during the Christmas and holiday season in the United States. I used to look forward to my husband belting out “Happy Holidays” (the only 2 words he would sing) in his deep voice every year until he passed in 2012. BTW, I also say Merry Christmas!

I live in a very nice neighborhood, many professionals, families, and retirees. Unfortunately, on trash day when there are high winds forecast (there are four different trash companies servicing the neighborhood, each with a different pick-up day) many residents just place the recyclables on the curb the night before. Due to the prevailing winds, the blowing trash that does not get caught on neighbors’ fences ends up at the entrance of the neighborhood, creating a ‘royal’ mess. Please, if you must put the trash out early, secure it; put the heavy glass on top or find another solution. Please be environmentally responsible and stop making the neighborhood the town dump.
To the coyote hunters who use dogs and drive white trucks: I know your dogs can’t read a posted sign. But that does not give you the right to disobey the signs unless you don’t care. I know it is cheaper to pay fines then it is to own your own land. If I catch you on my land I will have you arrested.

• On Feb. 20, 1792, President George Washington signs legislation renewing the United States Post Office as a cabinet department led by the postmaster general. While postmaster, Benjamin Franklin had streamlined postal delivery with surveyed and marked routes from Maine to Florida (the origins of Route 1).
Loose Change Leads to Changed Lives By Janet Olexy Due to extreme poverty, many people in Haiti give their kids away instead of watching them starve to death, with the hope that they will at least be fed. These innocent children often end up with people who don’t always care about their wellbeing. In December, Burger King Restaurants at Eastview Mall in Victor and in LeRoy raised over $3,300 for Together for Christ Ministries and for Christian Action & Relief for Haiti. Together for Christ Ministries is working to change the system that keeps too many Haitian children in domestic slavery. Its main campus includes a church, school, medical clinic and orphanage. Its purpose is “not just to feed, clothe and shelter, but also to love, educate and raise orphaned children according to biblical principles and Christian values.” The goal is for children to become responsible adults with the ability to provide for themselves, to help their neighbors and to serve their communities. C.A.R.H.A is a non-profit organization established in 1998 to aid Haitian families “spiritually, mentally, financially and physically.” Its vision is to educate and to evangelize Haitian families, and to provide medical planning for them. Burger King owner James Cammilleri and his wife Sarah are building a school in Haiti. “There is so much need in regards to feeding the children, and providing for school supplies and teachers’ salaries, etc.,” Cammilleri said, “that Sarah and I felt compelled to try and raise money for these two ministries that do not get a lot of support.” Donations will be used to finish four new classrooms at one school, along with a

courtyard and a gate, and to provide for school supplies such as maps, skeletons and chalkboards. In addition, funds will allow for the purchase of cows and new bread ovens to help feed the orphans. The Cammilleris, LeRoy and Eastview restaurant managers and their respective staffs wish to express their gratitude to all who donated over the holidays to support the fund drive for Haiti. To learn more about Together for Christ Ministries or Christian Action & Relief for Haiti, or to donate, visit tfchaiti.com or carha.net.

Increase Your Productivity Avoid surfing the Internet. The Internet could be the single greatest contributor to the loss of worker productivity in history. While Internet access can help workers maintain some level of sanity during the work week, spending too much time surfing the Internet doesn’t do anyone any good (aside from Web advertisers, of course). If you must surf the Internet each day, do so at established intervals, such as lunch hour or the end of the day. Those who eat breakfast at the office could use the time while they eat to peruse some favorite Web sites, but keep such surfing to a minimum.
