TOP TRAILS TO GO BIKING, SKATING + WALKING IN ERIE COUNTY
1. OUTER HARBOR, BUFFALO
Features more than 200 acres of green space that includes a wellness trail, bike park and lawn space. Take a look at their website for free fitness classes, rentals, events and more. buffalowaterfront.com/outer-harbor
2. WEST SHORE TRAIL, GRAND ISLAND
Right next to the Niagara River, this 9-mile trail is perfect for a bike ride. Or just check out the state parks on Grand Island for beautiful parks with great areas to get outside!
3. CANALWAY TRAIL
Ride along the side of the Erie Canal which goes from Tonawanda all the way to Albany! With plenty of parking alongside of it, you can stop by and use the trail as you much as you want. See the full map at ptny.org/cycle-the-erie-canal 4. CLARENCE BIKE PATH, CLARENCE
These two trails are perfect to see some of the beautiful sights Clarence has to offer! Created from former railroad lines, this path runs through the town, parks and historic destinations.
5. RAILS TO TRAILS, TONAWANDA
Created on top of a former railroad bed in the Town and City of Tonawanda, this 3.9-mile paved trail is perfect for a short bike ride, walk or skate!
6. LEHIGH MEMORY TRAIL, WILLIAMSVILLE
A short, paved trail that runs right though the heart of Williamsville, this wheelchair accessible trail is open to biking, skating and walking in the summer and cross county skiing in the winter!
7. NIAGARA SCENIC PARKWAY TRAIL
Starting right at Main Street in Niagara Falls, this 4-mile trail features several scenic overlooks and historic buildings as it passes through forested areas and local parks.
Between biking, skating and walking, there are so many ways to get outside and get some fresh air! Using our trailways has always been great, but activities like biking have experienced a boost in popularity when people were asked to remain socially distant for COVID-19. Walks and bike rides at a safe distance from others became popular and accessible ways to get out and exercise. With the lockdowns and social media, roller blading has made a comeback with people everywhere out skating. This summer, spend some time on our local trails and paths to enjoy our beautiful communities!
8. ELLICOTT CREEK TRAILWAY
Situated on Ellicott Creek, this almost 7-mile trailway is great for all skill levels and activities. It rides the outskirts of the University of Buffalo campus and gives way to some stunning views.
9. SHORELINE TRAIL, BUFFALO
This almost 22-mile pathway runs alongside Lake Erie on the southern side and the Niagara River on the northern side. It’s a great spot for skating, biking or walking even if you don’t make the whole 22 miles!
10. CHEEKTOWAGA HISTORIC RAILS TO TRAILS
Perfect for the outdoors lover and railroad enthusiasts, this ~1.5-mile trail is built next to an active rail line that used to haul coal from Pennsylvania up to Buffalo and Lake Erie.
