Leaving An Estate To Charity

One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed.

When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

is one of the sweetest cats

I’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing life with. Whenever I’m feeling down or think I’ve had enough, I hear her squeaker meow. I reach down with a smile on my face as I pet her, and all is well. But don’t let that fool you. 24/7 she asks for treats with all kinds of antics!!!

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES

Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am a brand-new pet sitter with four clients. I’m able to take one pet at a time into my home to care for them when their owners are traveling for long stretches, and I do home visits for the others. Well, the toy poodle I have in my care for the next three weeks brought an unpleasant surprise: fleas! Normally I would ask the client to clear up the flea problem before pet-sitting services can continue, but I’m already caring for the dog, so I’m stuck. What should I do? -- Jane H. in Wellesley, Massachusetts

DEAR JANE: Immediately contact the client to inform them. en ask for their permission to treat the dog. If they only want you to use a specific treatment, follow their instructions. Save your receipts for any flea treatments purchased.

A flea infestation can spread to the other pets you care for, so follow these steps to reduce infestation:

• Isolate the dog from most areas of your home until he has completed treatment and you are brushing away only dead fleas.

• Mop and vacuum your entire home daily, especially the corners. (Hint: Put a brand-new flea collar inside the vacuum cleaner bag to kill the fleas that are sucked in.)

• Wash or steam clean area rugs and drapes, and the dog’s bedding.

• Wash clothes that you have worn around the dog. (Hint: Set the clothes dryer to a medium or high heat setting, which will kill most eggs and fleas.)

is is a good time to review and update your pet-sitting contract. Add a clause requiring pets to be free of fleas, ticks and communicable diseases, as well as a clause that says owners must reimburse you for expenses incurred if their pet causes an infestation.

It’s perhaps no surprise that le er writing and handwriting are soon becoming lost talents in our increasingly high-tech society. Text, instant messages, and email are fantastic for their ease, convenience, and speed. But nothing beats the thrill of receiving a le er or a handwri en greeting card in the mail.

Letters have existed throughout history, from ancient India, Egypt, and Sumer, to Rome, China, and Greece up till today. Letters were utilized to self-educate in the 1600s and 1700s. Letters were primarily used to provide information, news, and pleasantries.

In 1840, the first le er to be mailed with a stamp was wri en in the United Kingdom. e first postage stamp was released in the United States in 1847. Before the advent of the stamp, a person had to rely on his or her memory.

Title | e dot placed above the le er “i” is known as a title. e M.V.P. | e most used word in the English language is “the.”

Simply consider who you want to write to. It may be an old friend with whom you have lost touch. It could also be a long-distance le er to a grandparent or family member. Write a letter

4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE

In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year

Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location.

In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day.

Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible.

Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing.

1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias.

2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either.

3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change.

4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective.

Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

suffering from

leaf blight will become straw-colored. According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho®, when a lawn is affected by ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho® notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it’s seemingly been cured.

Portable vs. Standby Generators

Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features)

Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

1. “Better Call Saul.”

• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

Here’s A Tip

* Many people have written in the tip to use two similarly sized bowls, one larger than the other, to serve cold salads at picnics. You add a few cups of crushed ice to the larger bowl, then nestle the smaller bowl into it, making it “chilled.” In any case, remember: Don’t leave food out longer than two hours.

* If you are doing food platters for your barbecue, consider making several smaller platters instead of one large dish. e large ones are harder to store when you prep beforehand, but a better reason is that the items will not go stale/too warm/too cold quite as fast, and it’s easy to switch out plates throughout the party.

Fiber is typically classified as soluble, which refers to types of fiber that dissolve in water, and insoluble, which is used to describe types of fiber that promote movement of material through the digestive system. Soluble fiber can help lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, while insoluble can help people who suffer from constipation or irregular stools.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* Adult mayflies have no functional mouth. Because of this, they die of malnutrition. This is an evolutionary occurrence that happens so aging mayflies don’t pass on genetic defects to the next generation.

* If you do a Google search on the word “askew,” the resulting content will tilt slightly to the right.

* The color of Facebook is blue because Mark Zuckerberg is red-green colorblind.

* Ever noticed how some mass-produced ballpoint pens, such as the Bic Cristal, have a hole in the cap? No? Well, in case you someday do, now you’ll know why -- it’s not just to prevent leaks, but choking as well. Lots of folks like to chew on pen lids, and in the event they accidentally swallow the cap, the hole ensures it won’t completely block their airway.

Explores & Reflects Humanity Through Oil Paintings

aley Indorato, a Fairport native and RIT graduate, is carving her path in the art world with a passion for oil painting and an insightful approach to capturing the human experience. Her work is deeply personal and universally resonant, reflecting a profound dedication to the cra and a commitment to truth in representation.

Born in Rochester and raised in Fairport, Haley’s journey began with early exposure to art. She o en painted alongside her father, an FLCC psychology professor and artist himself, and her mother, a Victor Spanish teacher, who fostered her creative pursuits with ample cra and art supplies.

Haley’s talent blossomed further at Fairport High School, where she took many art classes and experimented with an array of media. Encouraged by her teacher, Mrs. Steffer, Haley earned a BFA in Studio Art with a focus on painting at RIT. ere, she credits her artistic growth to several mentors, including RIT professors like Clifford Won, Emily Glass, and Denton Crawford, who helped her refine her technical skills and instilled in her the discipline and work ethic necessary for a successful artistic career.

Haley’s medium of choice is oil paint, a material she describes as “luscious, buttery, and visceral... so tangible and human.” She is captivated by its historical significance and its ability to convey the “fleshiness” of the human condition. Her creative process involves meticulous preparation, from building canvas supports to sketching loose underpaintings before diving into the wet-on-wet painting technique. Whether it’s life-sized portraits or still-life studies,Haley’sworksareinfused with painterly spontaneity and deep emotional resonance.

Haley’s art draws inspiration from both historical art and everyday life. She combines these influences to explore themes of reality, truth, and the human condition. “I believe in painting for the sake of painting,” she explains. “It’s an art form with centuries of symbolism and contradiction. I aim to continue and celebrate the long history in my work.”

Her portraits o en feature real, unidealized individuals in everyday settings, challenging the polished, filtered imagery prevalent in digital media. Haley’s subjects are imbued with authenticity, offering a counter-narrative to traditional notions of beauty and representation. “To be human is to be imperfect,” and she tries to capture that in her painting, adding, “Painting for me gets at being human more than any other material.... It’s so human to want to see ourselves and interpret the world around us.”

Among Haley’s favorite works are “ e Couch,” “A Curl for Every Vice,” and “Drawing in the Gallery (CJ),” which showcase her ability to blend technical mastery with meaningful storytelling. “ e Couch,” a life-sized portrait of her father and brother, captures an unidealized, relatable moment of everyday life. “It’s where I’m most comfortable at my house,” Haley explains. “ at comfort and vulnerability tie into expressing truth for me.” Having “A Curl for Every Vice” accepted into the Memorial Art Gallery’s juried show in 2023 was huge for Haley. And “Drawing in the Gallery” combines high and low arts, combining arts to reflect Haley’s belief that “all art forms are important to study,” as well as “the changing way we interact with art and what is popular in our modern, global world.”

Haley loves to paint the wide array of lifestyles, people, and places around Western NY, with its natural beauty and man-made decay. She has recently branched out to explore opportunities through the Rochester Artist Collaborative and says she’d love to collaborate and explore opportunities. “Rochester is a really symbolic place as a subject, but I probably need to live somewhere like NYC to show in galleries that can accommodate my work.”

Haley’s advice to budding artists is straightforward: “Just keep making. Practice is essential if you want to improve.” She emphasizes the importance of studying art, taking risks, and being both critical and vulnerable in one’s creative journey, saying, “Learn the rules and acquire the skills so you can break and go against them.”

With aspirations of solo exhibitions, an MFA, and a professional studio, Haley is determined to leave her mark on the art world. Her work – rooted in authenticity, technical skill, and a profound exploration of the human condition – continues to evolve, promising an exciting future for this emerging artist.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

MRI Reveals A Disease Of The Blood Vessels In The Brain

DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent fall split the skin below my left eye. I went to the emergency room to see if it required stitches. Since I complained of a headache in the back of my head on the left side, they ordered an MRI, which showed “atherosclerotic vascular disease with mild small vessel ischemic disease.” They also saw plaque within my internal carotid arteries.

The ER doctors said I should see a vascular specialist soon. Of course, I am scared. I am a 76-year-old woman on Bystolic, rosuvastatin, benazepril and thyroid replacement. I also take sulfasalazine for my inflammatory arthritis. I am thin, take many vitamins and supplements, and exercise four times a week.

Does the MRI mean I have dementia or Alzheimer’s? What does it mean? -- R.M.

ANSWER: No, the MRI cannot make a diagnosis of dementia. Dementia is diagnosed presumptively by a clinical exam that notes impairments in cognitive functioning such as memory, language and attention. (A definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is made by a pathological evaluation of brain tissue, which is almost never obtained while a person is alive.)

What the MRI shows is a disease of the blood vessels of the brain caused by cholesterol plaque. High blood pressure, smoking, high blood cholesterol, a previous family history, and other factors put people at risk for this condition. Some, but not all, people with the kinds of blood vessel disease you have will develop dementia, which is caused by cumulative damage to the brain tissue from multiple small strokes. In your case, both the large vessels (carotids) and small vessels are affected, suggesting that your cholesterol and blood pressure haven’t been ideal.

Your doctor has already taken some steps to slow or prevent the worsening of this condition. Careful control of your blood pressure (with Bystolic and benazepril) is essential. A statin drug (rosuvastatin) has been shown to reduce stroke risk and your overall dementia risk. I don’t know whether these are the best medicines for you or whether they are at the right doses, since only your doctor knows you well enough, but it is clear that your doctor is taking steps to protect your heart and brain.

Inflammatory arthritis (especially rheumatoid arthritis and lupus) increases the risk of blood vessel damage in the brain and heart, so early treatment is more important with people who have these conditions. Unfortunately, not all primary care doctors know how important inflammatory arthritis is when it comes to heart attack and stroke risk.

I do not believe there are any supplements or vitamins that are both safe and effective at preventing stroke, but there are a handful of people who may benefit from them. For example, people with high homocysteine in their blood may benefit from vitamin B12, folic acid, or their methylated counterparts.

A careful review of your overall health condition and diet is critical. You may be referred to a specialist for cognitive testing if there is any evidence of change in your thinking ability. A few blood tests will help further stratify your risk and may show a need for additional treatment.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Santa almost got away

Express means fast

A huge thank you to the fella that stopped on Five Mile Line Rd. by Klem to pick up our Santa blowup the morning of 12/30. It drifted to the middle of the road from the wind and he brought it right up to our door. Hope you have an awesome 2025!

West Wayne Florist Thank You

Thank you to the florist at the West Wayne Plaza (Macedon) shop ... You sent a beautiful rose in a beautiful vase directly to our door to celebrate our 71st anniversary. What a totally unexpected, fine gesture. The florist is a small businesswoman and she didn’t have to do that, but it was such a fine gesture, we want to thank you!

I needed one more thing from the grocery store on Christmas Eve so off to [local store] I went. I ran in and grabbed the one thing I needed and headed to the checkout. Glancing over the express lines I got in the one where the people ahead of me only had a few items. It was a seven items or less line. The woman in front of me had seven items. Just as the man in front of her was finishing up, the woman's husband came over and handed her seven gift cards to buy. I pointed out that the line was for seven items or less and got "thank you for telling me" and then she started to get rung up. After a few cards were put through she hit some sort of limit and a manager had to come over to override the rest of the gift cards. This was taking quite a long time. All the while the line was getting longer and longer. Activating seven gift cards is NOT an express lane transaction! Please be respectful of other people.

Integrity is lacking in so many TV commercials!

It is impossible to read the small print on so many TV commercials. The print is too small or similar color to the background or way too long to read in the time flashed OR all of the above. If this information is required or necessary, then it should be readable so it could be understood. And as another note, products advertised on TV should require the country of origin to help consumers make their decisions.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS

Make things easy for customers: Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touch-less payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contact-less payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.
