Q&A Master Gardeners with the

What is the process and ideal time of year to starting apple, pear, and peach trees from seed? What if you want to plant apple, pear, and peaches starting as small trees?

Many people mistakenly believe that fruit trees grow true to name from seeds. In reality, if you collect seed from a fruit grown on a plant, the seeds will produce plants that will be a hybrid of two plants. The new plant will be the same kind of plant, but its fruit and vegetative portions may not look the same as the parent because the plant is “heterozygous.” Therefore, all fruit trees must be vegetatively propagated by either

grafting or budding methods. Grafting and budding require a compatible rootstock or stock plant onto which you attach your desired variety of fruit plant. An inexpensive way to obtain a seedling rootstock is tocollectseedsfromthetypeofplant you are propagating. The seeds of all common tree fruits (apple, pear, peach, and cherry) require a chilling period before they will germinate and form new plants. Grafting and budding are relatively easy for apple trees, though for us that are more interested in having a fruit tree to plant purchasing a bar root tree is a preferredmethod.

Time of planting: We have routinely advised growers to plant bare rooted trees mid- to late March, April, or May. Several research studies have demonstrated the advantages of planting as soon in the spring as the soil conditions will allow. Trees planted in April have a decided advantage over those planted even one month later. As temperaturesincreaseinlatespring,

trees planted late will break bud sooner and struggle initially without a regenerated new root system developed. Avoid planting trees in frozenorwater-saturatedsoils. Kenneth

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Here’s a tip

• When baking, you can slow the rising time of dough by placing it in a cool place to rise. You can even let it rise in the refrigerator! Basically, it’s done rising when it’s doubled in size, so use that as your guide.

• Place individual fabric so ener sheets into sneakers to keep them fresh between wearings. You can use this for other shoes, too. Just be aware that the so ener sheet should stay inside the shoe; it could discolor certain fabrics on the outside.

• When baking savory bread, try substituting vegetable broth for the water in your recipe. It adds a deeper element of avor to the bread. Just try to use low-sodium broth so you don’t add too much salt to your bread.

WORDS WITH THREE B’S

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Hemorrhoid Surgery Doesn’t Deserve Its Bad Reputation

DEAR DR. ROACH: My 30-year-old, and otherwise healthy, grandson has been suffering from, and treating, hemorrhoids for two years. He is anemic due to his loss of blood. He’s had several bandings; they couldn’t complete the last one because he was in too much pain. They said they couldn’t anesthetize the area because his lack of feeling would prevent them from knowing if they were near a nerve. So, now they say he should have surgery, although it is said to be quite painful and difficult.

Do you agree that they can’t anesthetize the area for banding, and is the surgery as horrible to deal with as they say? Under what conditions would you say it is advisable to have the surgery? -- A.P.

ANSWER: Most people with a banding procedure do not need anesthesia, and nerve blocks are not used in hemorrhoidal banding because a feeling of pain is a useful indication that the band is not in the best position. When home treatments and office procedures (like banding, scleral therapy or infrared coagulation) are ineffective or can’t be used, it is time to consider surgical treatment. The surgery’s reputation of being “horrific” is undeserved. I have had several patients in the last few years undergo this surgical procedure, and although they have certainly had a few days of pain after the procedure, all have been happy with the outcomes. Surgeons often use long-acting local anesthetics, and the pain is greatly reduced when they are combined with better surgical procedures, compared to older surgical techniques and anesthesia.

Pure joy!

Many thanks to the fine ladies that volunteer at Avon’s Livingston County Humane Society. They allowed me to take a kitten to visit a dear friend at the Avon nursing home. She and some others enjoyed the kitten and a worker there may possibly adopt “George”! Please keep them in mind if you are looking to give a cat or kitten a furever home or even if you could provide foster care, they supply all the kitty’s necessities. Their dedication is appreciated by many.

Floral Beauty!

Thank you to the volunteers in the towns and parks that maintain the flower beds, everything is looking so wonderful this year!

Byrne Dairy - Geneseo

I would like to recognize Paul at Byrne Dairy in Geneseo. Paul goes above and beyond to keep the business clean, neat, items organized, and keeps fresh food stocked and if not available on the shelf, he will make it for customers. All employers could benefit from someone like Paul. Kudos to you, Paul...keep up the good work.

Concert prices

Why are concert prices skyrocketing?! The artists are just pricing out the little people who cannot shell out hundreds of dollars for a single evening out. Add to the $100 on a single seat, $10 for a bottled water or $20+ for anything else, that’s a solid day’s pay for a lot of people who would love to check out live music. No wonder people choose other options for their free time. I understand there’s a lot of hands in the pot, a lot of people who make the event happen, and salaries on top of venue costs, but when every person in a 10,000 person crowd paid a good $100 for that evening’s event, that’s a whopping $100,000 just for one event, not to mention the major profit of the food and beverage sales. Kinda outrageous, don’t ya think?

Do not judge by appearances!

As per the abuse of handicap parking signs: Perhaps it does exist, and I too get upset when I see people who seems to be without a need using the spaces. However, I am one of those whose health needs are not obvious. I have two very bad knees, as documented by X-rays. I have chronic insomnia which leaves me very weak and fatigued all the time. I need to park as closely as possible in order to get to a store. Using a cane does not work for me, because I also have poor balance. Although there may be a misuse of these signs, my doctor knows that I am truthful. I do use my sign. What bothers me is when people use these spaces without the needed signage to prove their need. As our population ages, we’ll need more of these spaces. May our society grow in courtesy toward those in need because it is seriously lacking!

and

DEAR READERS AND ADVERTISERS:

75 years is a long time, especially for a print publication these days. Here at the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, we’re pleased to have reached this milestone! There’s a saying that “a rising tide lifts all boats” and our ‘tide’ has been your faithful readership and advertising, and of course the boat is this publication. There are some other, very important tidewaters that have been such a help through the years – our dedicated team of Ad Consultants, Graphic Artists, Production Crew, Office Staff, Delivery Personnel - who have been so instrumental in our growth and success.

Most recently, we’ve won the grand prize of “Best of Show” from our National Media organization, Association of Community Publishers (ACP). Over 1,500 entries were submitted, and your Genesee Valley Publication came away with 14 awards ranging from Best Promotions, Featured Article, Creative Headline, Ad Series, Use of Digital, the Andrew Shapiro Award for Cancer Awareness, Contests for Our Readers, Classified Layout and our Featured Media video.

What makes me so proud of our team is that there is such a wide variety of marketing touches that we have put forth on behalf of not only our advertisers, but our readers as well. There is a lot to love about our paper as we continue to hear constantly, “read it cover to cover.”

So, it is with great pride and humble thanks that we look forward to continuing to serve you - whether in your home, or at your place of business, for many years to come!

Plan for the Future, Plan for Life.

What to Do with Your Old Electronics (Family Features) Mobile phones, laptops, tablets, game consoles, cameras - electronic devices are a big part of American life. In fact, Americans own an average of 24 electronic products per household, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. With technology changing so rapidly and new “it” devices hitting the market every few months, a lot of those devices get discarded quickly. That adds up to a lot of potential e-waste.

Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to keep old electronics out of the waste stream.

Donate. Donations give schools, nonprofits and lower-income families access to equipment they might not otherwise afford. Before donating, check with the organization to see what they need.

HOBBIES THAT SUIT A SUMMERTIME VIBE

Photography: Summer seascapes and landscapes are awe-inspiring, making this an ideal time of year to take up photography. Novices can begin by utilizing their smartphone cameras to take snapshots of local landscapes. Once the skill of pointing and clicking has been honed, amateur photogs can graduate to more expensive and precise cameras.

Trade Up. If you are ready to upgrade to something new, programs such as RadioShack’s Trade & Save let you swap retired technology for store credit toward your purchase.

Recycle. Electronics in nonworking condition should be recycled. Check www.Earth911.com or www.e-stewards.org to find a recycling center near you.

Don’t Forget the Batteries. Recycling your rechargeable batteries is another easy step you can take.

OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT ESSENTIALS

Seating: Folding camp chairs are portable and can be stored for guests who prefer being off the ground for movie nights. Otherwise, thick, waterproof blankets enable guests to spread out while watching movies outdoors. They’re also great for kids who are liable to spend a portion of the time watching the movie, but much of it running around the yard.

Gloria J. Andreotta

July 8, 2023

West Bloom eld, NY: At age 90, Gloria passed away peacefully at her home on July 8, 2023. She was born on December 4, 1932 in Passaic, NJ to the late Carmello and Grazia (Territa) Mistretta. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth E. Andreotta and her son, Kenneth Andreotta. Survived by her children, omas (Cynthia Halprin) Andreotta of VA, June (Glenn) Marut of IN, and Lisa Andreotta (Tom Blackmer) of Livonia; grandchildren, Mallory (Wes) Hansel and Meredith Marut; and great-grandsons, Seth and Gage Hansel.

Gloria grew up in Passaic, NJ the youngest of a large Italian family. Without higher education she ended up being one of the sharpest and most clever women around to help guide her children to succeed on all fronts.

Gloria loved traveling, jigsaw puzzles, cooking, baking, and gardening, becoming known as the “Dandelion Sheri ” to many for the care of her lawn. She also always had a love of the Jersey Shore, especially Long Beach Island. Gloria strongly relied on her faith and was an active parishioner of St. Rose Catholic Church in Lima, NY.

e family is forever grateful to Patti, Cathy, and Pam, “her companions,” for the love and care they provided to their mom.

No prior calling will be held. Gloria’s Funeral Mass, at St. Rose Catholic Church, and interment at Ascension Gardens, will be held in the future, at a date and time to be announced. In lieu of owers memorial contributions may be made to St. Rose Catholic Church, 1985 Lake Ave., Lima, NY 14485 or Ontario-Yates Hospice, 756 PreEmption Road, Geneva, NY 14456.

TIPS TO COPE WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE

Take care of your health.Mental Health America,a community-based nonprofit committed to promoting mental health, urges individuals dealing with the loss of a loved one to take care of their own health. After losing a loved one, some people may be in danger of developing a dependence on medication or alcohol that they’re using to deal with their grief. It’s important that grieving individuals recognize that threat and the role that maintaining one’s personal health can play in the healing process. Regular contact with your physician, routine exercise and a healthy diet can promote personal health and may help individuals avoid the pitfalls of addiction after the death of a loved one.

Our staff is here to assist you with pre-arrangement options. We offer various services to meet your needs, including traditional funerals and cremation services. Our traditional funerals include a visitation, funeral service, and burial. Our cremation services offer various options, from a simple cremation to a memorial service or cremation with visitation options.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE DRAFTING A

me from drafting a living will? Cost need not be a factor in setting up a living will. You can download a free template from any number of online legal sources. Local hospitals often have forms as well, which can be notarized for only a few dollars. These forms are generally comprehensive and can help you answer all the questions and write in specifics.

PAW’S CORNER

Puppy Piddling is a Real Pain

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 6-month-old, medium-size mixed breed dog Jake has a problem I can’t seem to train him out of. Whenever he gets excited, he leaves pee droplets across the oor. Jake is healthy and energetic, and he housetrained quickly. What can I do to stop the piddling? -- Pupper Dad in Ohio

DEAR PUPPER DAD: ere’s a very good chance that it can be resolved. It will take time and training, though.

Puppies under a year old piddle when they get excited or when they think they’re in trouble. Part of it may be a smaller bladder, but another part of it is what’s called “submissive urination.” Dogs piddle instinctively to signal that you are their superior. However, this isn’t a wild dog pack outdoors; it’s you and your dog and your beautiful hardwood oor.

Punishing or yelling at Jake when he piddles will not solve the problem. e real issue is one of con dence and of nding where he belongs in the household. Most puppies stop piddling at around one year old, especially in a home where there’s a predictable structure, as they mature and settle into their place in the family.

Encourage this during Jake’s rst year by staying calm when he piddles. Yelling or trying to correct on the spot can make the problem worse. Clean up the urine and lead him to a di erent spot, and work on a basic command with him like “sit-stay.”

Try not to pay attention to Jake when you come in the door from work. Ask visitors to look away from him when they come in. Later, when you and your visitors are settled on the sofa, pay attention to Jake with lots of praise. Learn more at this link: www.tu syourdog. com/dogtrainingandbehavior/the-three-reasons-puppies-piddle-indoors/.

HOBBIES THAT SUIT A SUMMERTIME

Reading: Individuals who have long wanted to read more should know that they’re not alone. A 2019 survey commissioned by the reading subscription service Scribd and conducted by The Harris Poll found that 35 percent of respondents wished they could read more. Finding time to read more may be difficult during spring, summer and fall, when parents must contend with their own hectic schedules as well as their children’s. Even individuals without children or empty nesters may find it difficult to carve out time to read in a typical day. But people who aspire to read more can take a book to the beach or out on the deck on a warm afternoon or evening. Leave the smartphone inside so you can relax and read distraction-free.
