MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY
Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

Manchester-Shortsville’s Holiday Basket Program Helps Ease the Burden
BY SUZIE WELLS
While some food prices have stabilized, and some major companies attempt to stabilize rising costs for the consumer, the consensus remains that costs of food in America are rising – o en outpacing incomes. e USDA Economic Research Service expects food prices to keep increasing, and the cost of staple items continues to outpace a lot of people’s incomes, forcing individuals and families to make tough choices.
A 2024 report by Foodlink, serving Rochester and the Finger Lakes region, shows a dramatic spike in the number of food insecure families and individuals across our region. Income simply isn’t keeping pace with rising costs of necessities, and more people pick up second or third jobs just to put food on the table.
Foodlink cites, “New data released by Feeding America today reveals the sharpest increase in food insecurity since the Great Recession.” In Foodlink’s 10-county Western NY service area, the rate climbed to 12%, where the number of children served by pantries and meal programs has more than doubled across the area, and “34% of people facing hunger do not qualify for SNAP benefits due to income thresholds.”
11-13% of the Ontario County population is food insecure, with seniors skipping meals to pay for medications and families skipping meals to stretch budgets and keep the heat, water, or electricity on. Foodlink reports that visits to food pantries and meal programs increased 35% in 2024. Some attribute this rise to food cost inflation and to the expiration of COVID-era federal assistance programs such as free school meals and increased SNAP benefits.
Unfortunately, food costs are not expected to drop any time soon, all sources report, and the holiday times can be especially brutal for individuals and families already stretched thin. According to MarketWatch and other national surveys, 56% of American adults are one accident away from financial tragedy, “one paycheck away from ‘financial disaster.’” at is year-round. Consider the added costs expected at the end of the year, with special holiday meals and gi -giving expectations, and individuals and families simply cannot manage.
ankfully, towns and villages, churches, organizations, and individuals collect food for local pantries. ( ank you to those who even coordinate pop-up pantries for their neighborhoods!) is helps ease the strain of grocery bills, but for many, the yearend holiday season can be full of tight budgets and families or individuals going without while neighbors may reap abundance. To help, many communities coordinate donation drives of warm clothing, food baskets, and gi s for families in need.
In the Manchester-Shortsville area, the community comes together to collect food and gi s for families in need. e Holiday Basket Program is an all-volunteer effort, entirely supported through the generosity of individuals, organizations, families, businesses, fire departments, churches, and the Red Jacket schools. e program
provides a anksgiving food basket, Christmas food basket, and gi s for all children 16 and under, and last year, they provided for over 70 families with a combined 100+ children.
At Shear Wonders on W. Main Street in Shortsville, community is at the heart of what they do. Serving the community for over 40 years, most of the Shear Wonders staff grew up in Shortsville and/or raised their families there, says stylist, Ellen Hays, who wants to laud this community collaboration. She says, “We are grateful for the connections we have forged with our loyal customer base and their families who also share these local connections. We strongly believe in giving back to our community as our community supports us.”
So, each year, Shear Wonders sets up a Gi Giving Tree for the Holiday Basket Program, with gi s community members can select and donate, and with a collection of donations toward the foodbaskets.Whiletheycontributetovariouscharitiesthroughout the year, donating gi certificates, gi baskets, and such, the holiday “angel tree,” as Ellen calls it, holds a special place in their hearts, as the community can see contributions building towards something bigger, such as a basket for a family to share a special holiday meal as well as gi s parents would otherwise be unable to afford for their children.
Angel trees, bell-ringing, and donation stations of all sorts spring up around towns and villages all over the area in November and December. is year, as times are tough and budgets are tight, let’s come together and support each other on this journey that is life. By giving even just a little, we can all help make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate among us. In that way, the holiday spirit can li us all.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D. Rheumatoid
Arthritis Patient Should Continue Biweekly Injections
DEAR
DR. ROACH: I’m a 67-year-old healthy male, but I do take Humira for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It does a wonderful job for me with no side effects. It does such a good job that I can periodically extend the time between injections, such as one every three weeks instead of the recommended dose every two weeks. I can even go as long as six months between injections without noticing much of the RA symptoms.
My rheumatologist is aware of this and encourages me to use the lesser amount if I still get relief. My quandary is that I was recently talking to my gastroenterologist about Humira, and he said that they use a very similar drug for gastrointestinal issues. But apparently, you aren’t supposed to stop taking it consecutively because the body will become immune to the drug, and the drug can lose its effectiveness. Naturally, I don’t want to lose the great relief I am lucky to be getting, but I also know it’s a strong drug. It seems that the less I take of it, the better. -- J.C.
ANSWER: I share your gastroenterologist’s concern. He may be thinking of a similar medication, vedolizumab (Entyvio). When this drug is stopped in someone with Crohn’s disease, it will cause a flare-up in about half of the cases within six months. In a third of them, the medication will no longer be effective. The situation is similar with adalimumab (Humira), as there is the possibility of a relapse if you stop it entirely. Taking it every three weeks led to a flare-up in 36% of people who had their disease well-controlled for years. The researchers were unable to identify any way to predict who would flare up. Restarting Humira regained control for over half of the study participants -- but not everybody.
I do understand that these are powerful medicines with side effects. Even if you aren’t noticing any, many people will, and there can be very serious side effects to many organs. Fortunately, these are uncommon, and in most cases, it is far better to stay on the medicine, as long as you are being monitored.
As a medical student, I remember seeing what RA looked like before we had effective medications such as methotrexate and TNF inhibitors like Humira. Years of inflammation caused terrible hand deformities, mostly in the women I saw. Since you aren’t having any side effects, and it is working well, I don’t recommend the three-week dosing -- and certainly not six months between doses.
DR. ROACH WRITES: A recent column on hair loss and thyroid disease prompted many readers to write me with their experiences. One reader noted that increasing protein in their diet seemed to slow down hair loss and even cause some regrowth. Another reader recommended biotin. I often recommend this as a trial, despite a lack of good evidence that it works. Biotin is a B-type vitamin that is very safe, although it can interfere with a lab assay when it comes to thyroid levels and other hormone levels. Note that both hair loss and thyroid disease are very common, and it is not always the case that thyroid disease causes hair loss.

There’s a National Cookie Cutter Historical Museum in Joplin, Missouri, established for the public. All the varied cutters designed by the club members are featured there.
If you really want to delve into the origin of cookie cutters, you’d have to go a long way back to 2000 B.C. The tradition of molding sweet cakes into shapes began in Ancient Egypt and was later adopted by the inhabitants of Greece, Rome, and Western Europe. In the 1500s, the Germans started baking molds with intricate designs, out of which emerged oodles of gingerbread people, houses, trees, mountains, and whatnot. And by the 1800s, American tinsmiths had built cookie cutters and introduced them into the market for sale.
The Cookie Cutter Collectors’ Club. Yes, you read that right! There’s a club for people who share an interest in cookie cutters and any cookie-related topics.

PAW’S CORNER

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last anksgiving, we had the scare of our life. Our little dog “Mamie” jumped onto the counter and ate a huge amount of the stuffing that I had just scooped out of the turkey! She got sick almost immediately and threw up, but because she kept drooling a erward I rushed her to an emergency vet. Mamie spent a few days at the vet getting supportive care because the ingredients in the stuffing affected her so badly. She’s completely recovered now, but please warn your readers to keep pets away from the kitchen and dining room during holiday festivities. -- Paul and Diane G., Norwood, Massachusetts
DEAR PAUL & DIANE: I am so relieved to hear that Mamie is OK! As you noted, many of the delicious, rich foods we eat during anksgiving and Christmas contain ingredients that are poisonous to dogs and cats. Onions are one culprit, but garlic, avocados, grapes (and raisins), macadamia nuts and chocolate can also cause serious illness and death if ingested. Foods or candies sweetened with xylitol can be deadly to pets. Alcohol and caffeine can also sicken them.
While preparing the feast, keep pets out of the kitchen. When guests arrive and you begin to serve treats and drinks, that’s the time to sequester your pets for the duration. Place them in a quiet room with water, treats and their favorite toys. is keeps them calm and allows you to focus on your guests. It also prevents them from getting into foods that could harm them.
Finally, for pet owners who think, “My big dog ate a chocolate bar once and it didn’t hurt him at all” -- it’s a bad idea to assume that your dog isn’t at risk because they got through an earlier scare unscathed. Protect your pets this holiday season, and enjoy many more to come.

Here’s A Tip
BYLINE: By JoAnn Derson
* Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box mix of cake on hand. Instead of the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. ey are really good, and you can get pretty creative.
* Inexpensive gi idea: A cute holiday coffee mug with a bar of chocolate, a packet of hot cocoa or instant coffee, a peppermint stick and a holiday pick. Place inside a gallon-size zipper-top bag, tie with a ribbon, then trim off the zipper-top, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice.
* Instead of going out and buying extra items to have on hand for guests, just borrow from your neighbors. Extra towels, place settings, silverware, kitchen appliances: It’s a pretty good bet that someone on your street has it for you to borrow. If you don’t know your neighbors well enough to ask, maybe you should start planning a get-to-knowyou party right now.

A Sweet Anniversary Surprise
Pj's in School!
We got take out from a local restaurant this past weekend and were lucky enough to have one of the owners helping us check out. When I mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary, he was so nice to run back and give us two slices of their peanut butter pies to celebrate. Thank you for making our anniversary even sweeter!
Honest, Caring People
On Tuesday, November 19th I foolishly left my purse in the shopping cart in front of the big box store and drove off. Shortly after, I realized I left it and hurriedly drove back. There in the parking lot I saw a young man heading into the store with my purse. I called out to him and retrieved my purse. My God, what a feeling of relief. Never got his name but he was a caring and honest man. Thank you for being who you are. Your parents raised a special young man.
Recently I was talking to a young person who attends a local junior high school. She told me that students are now allowed to wear pajama pants to school. What's next? Bringing their pillows and blankets? Whatever happened to schools being a place where education and discipline in life were taught? What role are our tax funded Administrators/ Principals playing in all of this? I was also told that swearing has become common among the students and is being tolerated. The saddest thing was when I asked this young person why they thought all of this was allowed and she said it was because the principal and teachers don't care. Is this what our school system in NY has become? Why don't we just allow all students to stay at home and get their education online? Why are our tax paying dollars going into keeping up with these expensive buildings just to become a free for all for the students?
Sidewalks Were Invented for a Reason
On Saturday while driving in our village, I saw four separate instances of people walking in the road with the sidewalk right there. You know, that cement thing that you bought with your taxes specifically for pedestrians to walk on so they’d be safe. You somehow think it’s cool and fun to walk in the road for no reason whatsoever. Your recklessness is not appreciated.

HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD
Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.
