HOW TO STRETCH YOUR HOLIDAY DOLLARS (Yes, Gamers, That Includes You) Looking to stretch your dollars this holiday shopping season? We’re not talking anything as gauche as pretending you’ll be out of tow n so you can buy everyone’s presents at after-Christmas sales. No, w e’re talking w ays to get more bang out of the buc ks you do spend on holiday-related items. W ith the National Retail Federation reporting that the average shopper w ill spend nearly $750 on holidayrelated items, every little bit of saving can help. Here are some ideas you may not have thought of: Dow nload retailers’ discount apps/new sletters. M any retailers now offer special mobile apps that you can dow nload for exclusive discounts and offers on not only specific items, but even your entire purchase. Others have free email new sletters that send w eekly digital coupons you can use. Sell or trade in your old electronics and video games. You’re sitting on found money if you have some unloved gadget c ollec ting dust in a draw er. W ebsites w ill pay you for products, w hile the retail giant GameStop gives you cold, hard cash or trade-in credits for video games and systems, as w ell as iPods, iPads and iPhones you or someone else on your list has been asking for. Build Gift Baskets. W hen even the w ealthy “ have few er qualms” about shopping at discount stores, as CNN M oney recently noted, maybe it’s time to hit the racks and create a beauty case filled w ith body butter, oils and a thick loofa. The custom touch w ill go a long w ay, as w ill the extra savings.

Ship Gifts. Shipping holiday gifts is another way to simplify holiday travel and save money. The lighter air travelers can pack, the more quickly they can make it through the airport. Shipping gifts saves you from paying excessive bag fees, and it also saves you the trouble of checking bags and waiting in baggage claim. Drivers also may benefit from shipping gifts, which can give everyone in the car more room to relax and also save the driver some money on gas.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful Half the fun of the winter holidays is being outside - caroling, building snowmen, sledding. But if you have asthma, you need to know that very cold, dry air can be a trigger. If you’re heading outside and it’s very cold, cover your mouth and nose with a scarf or face mask - particularly if you’ll be exercising.

Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs. Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches. The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.
• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Why Is Alcohol Banned With Antibiotics? DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/ GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Light Hill / Canandaigua Comfort Care Home opened nearly six months ago to care for our residents at their end-oflife. Prior to that, there were months of renovations at the hands of several extremely talented and skilled volunteer craftsmen. The home’s operation is only possible because of our incredible family of volunteers. They have come for different reasons from different backgrounds, willing to care for our residents with a caring heart. NOVEMBER is NATIONAL HOSPICE & PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH, the ideal time to express our deep gratitude for the love, care and compassion with which they fill our homes every day. In addition, there are many more who keep our place running just like any other home. Every day at Light

Hill is brighter because of our volunteers, the heart of our home.
From the man in the red truck and his dog Skipper: I’ve been taking my dog Skipper for rides in my truck for many years now. He looks forward to it and enjoys it! I’m sure it bothers many people, for he is barking all along the way. It was so encouraging and kind of the neighbors on Chick Rd. to write up a positive comment. Thank you for seeing the bright side of our story!
Wouldn’t it be nice at this time of THANKS GIVING…That we remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to have loving people and warm surroundings to our table of blessings. Perhaps instead of acrimonious debate, we could bring warm thoughts and good conversation to our table of gratitude. May it be so… Namaste… Randy Pawley
Article 22, Section 601 of the NY Agriculture and Markets Law: Leaving the scene of injury to certain animals without reporting. Any person operating a motor vehicle which shall strike and injure any horse, dog, cat or animal classified as cattle shall stop and endeavor to locate the owner or custodian of such animal or a police, peace or judicial officer of the vicinity, and take any other reasonable and appropriate action so that the animal may have necessary attention, and shall also promptly report the matter to such owner, custodian or officer (or if no one of such has been located, then to a police officer of some other nearby community). The remainder of S601 & S602 should be read by all-- covers the fines and being arrested for failure to comply. NO LAW TO KEEP CATS INSIDE.
It was great to see the Homecoming Parade. As I have done for SO many years, I took a plastic bag with me. This was PARTIALLY to collect the candies and gifts thrown by the participants. But after the parade is over, it is ALWAYS the same ~ I backtrack and go along the route to the beginning of the parade picking up the wrappers left behind by the litterbugs. It would be SO nice if one year, I went along, and found NO WRAPPERS left behind. I am sure the residents along the route would agree! As for the candy that is missed, think about this: I am sure the residents along the route appreciate the ants that the missed candy brings. PLEASE look around to be sure you haven’t missed any candy! You can ALWAYS donate what you don’t want. PLEASE also look around to see if you can pick up wrappers!

M ake sure your attic is properly ventilated. Homeow ners are practically inviting higher energy bills if there’s not w hat Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence, calls “ a continual flow of air to protect the efficiency of your attic’s insulation.” Working against achieving that: excess moisture build-up that clings to your roof’s underside in w inter from seemingly benign sources -- i.e., appliances, show ers and cooking vapors -- before ultimately soaking the insulation w hen the condensed moisture falls.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
A MOST PERSONAL MATTER Grief has been described as a “dagger in the heart.” It poses the challenges of picking up the pieces and moving on without feeling as though you are betraying the memory of your beloved. The manner in which people deal with grief is influenced by culture, religion, and personality. Some people mourn publicly while others withdraw. Some search for meaning by asking what the life of the deceased meant or why death came at this particular time. Others never bother to ask these questions. Some people want to talk about how they feel, and many do not. All these approaches must be respected because, as much as grief is a universal experience, it is an individual matter. At KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, our compassionate staff understands that everyone experiences grief in their own way. We have been serving our community with care for many years. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities, conveniently located at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “No one ever told me that grief felt so much like fear.” ~ C.S. Lewis Preplanning a funeral may sound morbid, as few people want to think about their deaths or discuss dying with their families. But there are numerous benefits to preplanning funerals.
