Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Petunia. My mom and dad rescued me after bad things happened to me. I have no claws and I was missing over half the fur on my body, was starving and very cold. I was hiding under the neighbor’s house and they gave me food. Now I have a home, good food, and lots of cozy places to nap. Napping with my dad is my favorite thing to do. They call me their Princess. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Color your landscape: The plants outside a home shouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb, but a few splashes of color can make a home more appealing. For the cost of some annuals, which are typically inexpensive, homeowners can turn a drab flower bed into a colorful spot bound to catch a buyer’s eye.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

The Angel Tree in Action
Even Exchange
VFW Cmdr. Fred Gerstner, David Bell and Don Overfield
21 years ago David Bell and his wife Bernie began a program called “The Angel Tree.” It is held in the basement of the local Canandaigua Moose Club. Since that time, many businesses have stepped up to support this worthy cause. The Local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7414 has become the latest organization to lend it support with the help of Lowe’s and Walmart. The Angel Tree assists families with children, during the holiday season, that might be having difficulties making ends
meet. Some of the items that are given are clothes, toys and food for Christmas. The organizations that are currently helping with The Angel Tree are the VFW, the Moose Club, Fuller Funeral Home, Crown Jewelers, Ray’s Restaurant, Sweet Solutions, The Paperback Store, Victor Hills Golf Course, Walmart and Lowe’s. Donations to The Angel Tree are accepted year-round. If you are interested in donating to this worthy cause, please contact David Bell at 585-201-3397.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/ GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CUSTOMIZED COFFINS The small African nation of Ghana is renowned for producing handcrafted coffins that symbolize some aspect of the deceased – their occupation, their hopes, or their dreams. These “fantasy coffins” are produced from wood in the semblance of items such as luxury automobiles, fish, or the Holy Bible to encapsulate deceased individuals who were car enthusiasts, fishermen, or clergy. These skillfully worked, colorful, and artful coffins clearly reflect the interests and passions of the people held within them for eternity. While they may break from traditional coffins in terms of form and style, they express the old tradition of paying homage to the honor of the dead. Expertly crafted and beautifully painted, fantasy coffins bring life to death. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is pleased to present you with interesting and informative topics. Should you care to incorporate something that was special to the deceased as part of the commemoration, your request will be honored. We will provide you with a wide variety of commemorative options to meet your taste and budget. Contact us whenever you need us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity.” ~ William Penn

Onion and Apple Tart 4 tablespoons of (1/2 stick) unsalted butter 2 onions (about 1 pound), halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Pastry dough for one 11-inch tart or 9-inch deep-dish pie 3 large eggs 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg, preferably freshly grated 1 sweet-tart baking apple, such as McIntosh or Jonathan Special equipment: 11-inch fluted tart pan (1 1/8 inches deep) with a removable bottom Preparation 1. In large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onions, salt and pepper, stirring occasionally until soft, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to very low, stirring occasionally, until onions are pale gold, about 20 minutes. Set aside to cool. 2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to a 14-inch circle. Fit dough into an 11-inch fluted pan with removable bottom. Trim excess to a 1/2inch overhang, then fold it back into pan to reinforce fluted edge. Using a fork, pierce bottom of pastry all over. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat oven to 400°F. 4. Place chilled shell on rimmed baking sheet and line shell with foil and pie weights. Bake until pastry is set and pale gold along the rim, 15 to 20 minutes. Carefully remove foil and weights and continue baking until shell is golden all over, 10 to 15 minutes. 5. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, whisk together eggs, cream and nutmeg. Stir in onions. Peel, core and thinly slice apple. 6. Remove shell from oven, pour egg mixture in, and arrange apple slices decoratively on top. Press apples to slightly submerge them. Bake until top is lightly browned, 25 to 35 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Serves 6 to 8

Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs. Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches. The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.
• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you.

Prepare your home to sell • Do a deep cleaning. Whether a cleaning service is hired or the homeowner does it himself, tackling necessary cleaning projects could make the home shine. Now is the time to wash the windows, shampoo the carpets, regrout the bathrooms, and tackle all of those messes that could compromise a sale. • Add a fresh coat of paint. If walls are bright colors or eclectic, it could pay to paint rooms in more neutral shades to appeal to the masses. Just be aware that some buyers are suspicious of paint, especially freshly painted ceilings. They may think a homeowner is trying to hide something, usually water stains. • Keep the home updated. While one doesn’t have to follow every trend, ensuring the home is ageless can make for a better sell. So if the cabinets scream 1985 and the bathroom is circa 1967, it could be time to do some updating.

Thank you to the kind lady ahead of me at the HOG who passed her store credit on to me. It was about $5.00 - and your thoughtfulness made my day. By the time the clerk told me what you had done, you had already left. I hope you see this because it is NEVER too late to say “Thank you”!!!!!!
Thanks to the unknown person who stayed in the parking lot at a local grocery store after my son finished work and everything was closed to make sure I made it through the snow storm to pick up my son. It was very much appreciated!
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who took part in the benefit at Jones Hall for our grandson,

Geordan Mitchell. Whether you donated your time in the kitchen or a basket, attended the spaghetti dinner, bought raffle tickets or were just present to show your support, we thank you. We are overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the residents of Cal-Mum and surrounding communities. It warms our hearts and we feel very blessed knowing that our friends, acquaintances and many others care. Many thanks again and we wish you all a very Happy Holiday season. Sincerely, Ron Roth and Marian Graney-Roth Earlier this week we had dinner at the Village Inn, corner of 98 and 104, and I had the best Prime Rib I’ve ever had. Mark and his staff are some of the friendliest people you would want to meet and the service is excellent. You need to pay them a visit, lunch, supper or Sunday Brunch are all excellent, I know you won’t be disappointed. I’ve eaten in a lot of places in WNY as well as down the east coast, this is the best. Ron Montague Brockport NY

When and why did the relatively new custom of the bridal couple “smashing” pieces of their wedding cake into each other’s faces become acceptable, expected and/or cute? In most cases, within hours of the performance, the couple has stood “in the presence of God and this company” and promised to care for and honor each other. Are they breaking a solemn vow almost immediately? If at another time, they acted in a similar manner in any public place, at the least they would be asked to leave. In a more serious instance someone could be charged with assault/ battery. I think this is so hypocritical whenever I read about fundraisers for schools, sports & sponsored by healthcare organizations, and the tickets for sale note ‘alcoholic beverages’, like wine, beer, cocktails. Alcohol is becoming the top killer of young people and innocent victims. So many people need help through health care

facilities for alcohol addiction, and yet, fundraisers still include alcoholic beverages. In today’s tumultuous society, alcohol exasperates problems instead of reducing them. Is it time for “Alcohol-Free Communities”? It has worked for Smoke-Free communities, now we need to do the same for alcohol. Healthcare costs are higher from alcoholrelated costs, inc. domestic violence, addiction, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, mental health, car/boat accidents, etc. You may not agree with this young man’s protest, but the FIRST Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives him and every other American the right (and some might point out also the duty) to free speech. Those who fought and died for this country fought and died for this very right. And exactly why does his protesting injustice mean he has to give up his living? The very fact that he is a famous football player gives him a larger voice to use in protest so that maybe more people will listen. Also, if you had bothered to “Google” his name, you would have found out that he was born in Milwaukee, WI, which, last time I checked, is still part of the U.S.A. The more you know...
