DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read that there is a correlation between the use of statins and suicide in men over 60, especially if they have suffered from chronic depression. Can you tell me if this has been studied more? -- K.M.

ANSWER: This concern has been studied extensively. An older class of cholesterol medication, the fibrates, was associated with a small increased risk of suicide and violent deaths, in several large studies. However, a very large study published in 2020 showed no increase in risk of death by suicide among those taking statin drugs. In fact, that study, as well as several others, have shown a decrease in depression risk among statin users. Statins have even been found to be (modestly) effective in treatment of drug-resistant depression.

Men over 60 are certainly at a higher risk from death by suicide, but statin drugs do not appear to increase that risk. Anyone with thoughts of hurting themselves should seek care from their doctor, a mental health professional, or the suicide and crisis lifeline at 988 in the U.S. and 833-456-4566 in most Canadian provinces. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 74. I have always been described as small-boned. I am on a statin, but otherwise, I’m healthy. I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia. I do not eat dairy, but I do take vitamin D. I am vegetarian and eat lots of tofu. I am very concerned about taking any additional medicines. Suggestions, please? -- F.M.D.

ANSWER: Osteopenia, or low bone density, is analogous to borderline diabetes or elevated blood pressure. It’s not a disease in itself, but it puts you in a range between the healthiest condition and one that can put you at risk. In the case of osteopenia, you are at a higher risk for developing osteoporosis, which, in turn, puts you at a high risk for a fracture, especially one of the spine or the hip. We do not normally treat low bone density with medicine. Lifestyle interventions to help slow loss of bone density include not only the calcium and vitamin D you are taking, but I especially recommend exercise. Weight-bearing, musclestrengthening and posture exercises are proven to help. Smokers should quit.

You should have gotten a T-score on your report, which compares your bone density for a given bone to a healthy young adult. The worse the T-score, the closer you are to osteoporosis, which is a T score below -2.5. Depending on how close you are to osteoporosis, the sooner your bone density test should be repeated. People with osteoporosis should be considered for medication. I understand your concern about taking more medicine than you need, but you really don’t want a hip fracture to occur.

Subject: Fraudsters Within the Federal Workforce Double Dipping on the Dole While on the Unemployment Roll

Good morning folks, ousands of active federal employees may have also falsely claimed that they lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic, in order to be paid twice by taxpayers: Once for being employed and then again for pretending to be unemployed.

Millions of Americans lost their paycheck during the COVID-19 pandemic, as they found themselves jobless and unsure how they would provide for their family.

While Iowa business owners and working families faced economic uncertainty, federal employees were fortunate to have the reliability of a government paycheck.

Despite this reassurance, tens of thousands of federal employees applied for and received nancial aid that was intended for small businesses.

Sta from numerous government agencies, including the IRS, TSA, FEMA, the U.S. Postal Service, Amtrak, and the Secret Service, have been detected receiving jobless bene ts while also being on the federal government’s payroll!

Some were even paid overtime at the same time claiming to have lost wages due to the pandemic. Others were so blatant, they actually applied for jobless bene ts from their work computers.

In addition to eecing taxpayers, these unscrupulous bureaucrats have also tarnished the reputation of the other dedicated civil servants, many of whom worked long hours in essential jobs during the pandemic.

More than $5 trillion in federally funded COVIDrelated bene ts—including $716 billion in stateadministered unemployment compensation—were authorized in response to the pandemic, which began in January 2020. More than 1 million Americans have died as a result of COVID-19.

Senator Joni Ernst expressed outrage that millions of Americans not working for the federal government lost their jobs and found themselves in desperate economic straits. e Iowa senator gave her January 2023 Squeal Award to the thousands of “fraudsters within the federal workforce who double dipped by being on both the government’s dole and the unemployment roll.”

“Millions of Americans lost their paycheck during the COVID-19 pandemic, as they found themselves jobless and unsure how they would provide for their family. While business owners and workers across the nation faced this economic uncertainty, federal employees were fortunate to have the reliability of a government paycheck,” Ernst said in her statement.

Ernst noted that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is prominent among the federal departments and agencies that have been identi ed as having civil servants who received COVID-related unemployment bene ts in addition to their regular paychecks.

“Nearly 2,000 [DHS] employees or fraudsters may have been paid more than $2 million in fraudulent COVID-19 unemployment bene ts, according to a review by the Department’s O ce of Inspector General (OIG), for example,” she wrote. “ e OIG determined 935 of the DHS employees signed up and approved to receive Lost Wages Assistance were ineligible and another 874 were potentially ineligible for the program. In fact, 336 of the DHS employees claiming to be unemployed received overtime pay.” ankyou!

I am also asking the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, which coordinates the e orts to detect abuse of COVID-19 programs, to identify every federal employee who wrongfully received unemployment payments, recover the money that was ripped o , and grant each of those who took advantage of taxpayers by collecting jobless bene ts their wish to be unemployed.
