THANK YOU from the Dansville Rotary Club to all who helped make their annual Thanksgiving Dinner program a huge success. 350 dinners consisting of turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, dressing, and pie were distributed throughout the community aided by a huge core of volunteers. Rotarians, Rotarian’s families, school kids, and community volunteers manned the food lines and aided in the delivery of the meals.
Offices of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver will be CLOSING AT NOON ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9TH so that our employees may attend our holiday celebration. Thank you for your understanding!
Special thanks to Kent Rounsville, his wife Alise, Dave and Sherrie Roberts, the Union Hose for allowing us to use their club rooms, Gene and Diana Moffat for donating the squash, Cory and Katie Mark for donating the potatoes, and to the Dansville Rotary Club for another successful Thanksgiving Day Feast! There is not a better way to spend a part of Thanksgiving Day than to sponsor an event like this for our service community. We hope that you all enjoyed your meal as much as all of us did bringing it to you.
Happy Holidays to all and Best Wishes for a safe and healthy New Year!! FIREWOOD- LOG LOADS- ASSORTED HARD WOOD: 18-20 face cord. Contact 585-335-5879.

PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Water the tree often. Christmas trees need lots of water to make it through the season. You may notice the water in the tree stand disappears quickly when you first bring the tree home. That’s because freshly cut trees will consume more water than trees that were cut several weeks ago. As the season goes on and the tree’s vascular system begins to clog, you might not need to water the tree as much as you did when you first brought it home. But check the tree’s water stand twice per day when you first bring it home, refilling the stand with water whenever necessary.

Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs. Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches. The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.
• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you. Assisted living fac ilities c an meet the needs of people w ho c annot live independently but do not require the around-the-c loc k c are of a nursing home.

To date, over 40 bags have been given out to individuals in the surrounding area. Items in the bag are things that were helpful with some side effects of treatment. DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/ GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. “ Ride the energy of your ow n unique spirit.” – Gabrielle Roth DID YOU KNOW? While it might be synonymous with Santa Claus and cold weather, the North Pole is actually much warmer than the South Pole. That’s because the North Pole sits at a lower elevation than the South Pole, and it is located in the middle of an ocean. The South Pole, on the other hand, is located on the continent of Antarctica, which is covered in ice. But Santa fans mulling a trip to the North Pole to visit jolly old St. Nick might want to think otherwise, as temperatures at the North Pole are less than welcoming. Summertime temperatures at the North Pole, for example, hover right at the freezing point. In addition, because of the way Earth rotates, the North Pole experiences just one sunrise and one sunset each year. However, because the sun is always above the horizon in the summer and below the horizon in the winter, the North Pole actually experiences 24 hours of sunlight in summer and zero hours of sunlight in the winter. While children in North America know the North Pole as home to Santa Claus, that’s a relatively recent addition to the legend of Santa Claus, a story that some historians suggest traces its origins all the way back to the third century. Historians credit famed 19th century caricaturist and editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast with being the first to link Santa Claus and his workshop to the North Pole. However, many Nordic countries continue to say Santa Claus lives in their territories.

“Three Afghans, a Walking Stick & A Basket”
generously donated the afghan for this raffle. It’s a real treasure & heirloom, easily 75 years old. Two more afghans were donated by Valerie Canute of Dalton, NY. Each is an explosion of color whose designs will enhance any bed or sofa. The winner of the unique walking stick designed and crafted by Larry Howe of Dansville will also be rewarded with 2 books on enjoying the Finger Lakes region. This walking stick comes with its own stand, and by itself is a work of art. Last, but not least, the Friends have a delightful “basket” of Christmas items created by Wendy Morris, the Library’s newest part-time clerk. Tickets are available at the Library or any Friends member. Funds from this raffle will be used toward the revision of our website – we want to make it mobile-friendly, and easier to use in every way! We hope you will support this effort; it’s long overdue!

Light Hill / Canandaigua Comfort Care Home opened nearly six months ago to care for our residents at their end-oflife. Prior to that, there were months of renovations at the hands of several extremely talented and skilled volunteer craftsmen. The home’s operation is only possible because of our incredible family of volunteers. They have come for different reasons from different backgrounds, willing to care for our residents with a caring heart. NOVEMBER is NATIONAL HOSPICE & PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH, the ideal time to express our deep gratitude for the love, care and compassion with which they fill our homes every day. In addition, there are many more who keep our place running just like any other home. Every day at Light

Hill is brighter because of our volunteers, the heart of our home.
From the man in the red truck and his dog Skipper: I’ve been taking my dog Skipper for rides in my truck for many years now. He looks forward to it and enjoys it! I’m sure it bothers many people, for he is barking all along the way. It was so encouraging and kind of the neighbors on Chick Rd. to write up a positive comment. Thank you for seeing the bright side of our story!
Wouldn’t it be nice at this time of THANKS GIVING…That we remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to have loving people and warm surroundings to our table of blessings. Perhaps instead of acrimonious debate, we could bring warm thoughts and good conversation to our table of gratitude. May it be so… Namaste… Randy Pawley

It was great to see the Homecoming Parade. As I have done for SO many years, I took a plastic bag with me. This was PARTIALLY to collect the candies and gifts thrown by the participants. But after the parade is over, it is ALWAYS the same ~ I backtrack and go along the route to the beginning of the parade picking up the wrappers left behind by the litterbugs. It would be SO nice if one year, I went along, and found NO WRAPPERS left behind. I am sure the residents along the route would agree! As for the candy that is missed, think about this: I am sure the residents along the route appreciate the ants that the missed candy brings. PLEASE look around to be sure you haven’t missed any candy! You can ALWAYS donate what you don’t want. PLEASE also look around to see if you can pick up wrappers!

Jamaica Lime Pie Serves 6 Filling 4 large egg yolks 1 large egg white 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 cup fresh lime juice 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 partially baked 9-inch pie crust, chilled Meringue 3 large egg whites 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 6 tablespoons sugar To make the filling: In a medium bowl, beat the egg yolks and egg white until they are very thick and lemoncolored. Stir in the condensed milk, lime juice and salt until well blended. Pour into the chilled pie shell. Refrigerate for several hours to allow the filling to set. Shortly before serving, make the meringue. Preheat the oven to 425 F. In a large bowl, beat the 3 egg whites with the cream of tartar until they form soft peaks. Gradually beat in the sugar, and continue beating until it is dissolved. By then the meringue should be stiff and glossy. Spread over the filling, being sure to seal the edges well so that the meringue will not shrink. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes, or until delicately browned. Let cool away from drafts.

MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXCURSIONS SPECIAL Make it a date night. The thought of shopping may not conjure up ideas of romance, but if time is short, couples can use shopping excursions as an opportunity to spend time together. Visit a coffee shop or a bar for a nightcap afterward and enjoy some one-on-one time. Parents can enlist the help of a babysitter to keep children entertained while they enjoy some uninterrupted time with each other.

Try something bold at brunch Popovers make a great addition to any brunch menu. Home cooks who want to get a little creative with their popovers can whip up a batch of “Popovers With Goat Cheese & Chile” from Linda Collister’s “Quick Breads” (Ryland, Peters & Small). Popovers With Goat Cheese & Chile Serves 4 to 6 1 cup milk (not fat-free) 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon wheat germ 3 extra-large eggs 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 5 to 6 ounces goat cheese 1 medium-hot chile (or to taste), finely chopped 12-cup muffin tin, or flexible molds set on a baking sheet, well buttered - Preheat the oven to 425 F. - Put the milk, flour, salt, wheat germ, eggs, and melted butter in a food processor and run the machine until you get a smooth batter. - Cut the goat cheese into 12 fairly even pieces. - Pour the batter into the cups in the muffin tin so each cup is about half full. Add a piece of cheese to each and a little of the chopped chile. - Bake immediately for 25 minutes. Then, without opening the door, turn down the heat to 350 F and bake for an additional 15 minutes. Serve straight from the oven.

to be part of a growth-oriented organization. BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.
