Ticks Plague This Playful Bulldog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t get it. My bulldog “Chester” was out in the yard with me on a cool morning while I raked the first leaves of fall. When he came in, he had four ticks around his neck! They were hungry, too. I pulled the ticks off, but every time he goes outside now, he has one or more ticks burrowing into his fur. I thought cool weather causes ticks and fleas to die off. What’s happening? -- Burt G., Manchester, Vermont
Mendon-Honeoye Falls Office 9 West Main St. • Honeoye Falls, NY 14472
585-624-3370
DEAR BURT: Believe it or not, tick (and flea) activity can increase in early fall. Temperatures are still warm enough for these pests to thrive, especially under fallen leaves and in high grass. And they’re always hungry, so they’ll latch onto a warm body as soon as they get the opportunity. You’re doing exactly the right thing to combat ticks. As soon as Chester comes inside, you’re checking his coat for ticks and removing them as soon as you see them. And you’re raking the leaves in the yard regularly so that they don’t build up. Here’s a few more things you can do that may reduce the number of ticks in your yard: -- Keep the grass mowed right up until the first hard frost. -- Cut back tall grasses and underbrush on your property. -- Move woodpiles away from the house. -- Don’t let Chester roll in the leaf piles, and block his access to untamed areas of brush or tall grasses. -- Use a flea-and-tick- prevention collar or treatment on Chester. Talk to his veterinarian about the best product to use. -- If heavy tick infestation doesn’t abate, consider treating your yard with a flea-and-tick spray made for this purpose. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing. Zero, not here untrue You need to get your facts straight! Even if you are vaccinated, you can still carry and transmit Covid! You can still get Covid!! And yes, I’m vaccinated by my choice! I was recently in the ER. The nurse that took care of me was overworked, wonderful, and caring and had had Covid twice. What better immunity than your own body’s? It’s much better than any shot made by mankind. The problem is this virus keeps mutating, and no vaccine is going to keep you 100% safe from it. I’m a retired nurse, and I do understand what this means. So, it should remain a choice, not a mandate. Health care professionals continue to use PPE. You will not be cared for by anyone who is unprotected. Know what you are talking about before you attack an already taxed system. Also, if you are out in public, how do you know the person standing next to you is vaccinated?
S E V A R Yes, kindness matters I have experienced something similar while at a local park with my two granddaughters, ages 7 and 3. They wanted only to make new friends but were ignored and laughed at. It broke my heart when they cried, but I couldn’t blame the children involved. They’re only children. Rest assured, your granddaughter will make good friends at school and completely forget about this unfortunate incident. Still, I know it’s something that will tug at our heart strings for some time.
Give a poor man a bone Thanks to the kind lady with a dog named Tucker who gave me a ride home when my bike got a flat. Those two miles would have gotten the best of me.
Great customer service I’ve been to a lot of landscaping and garden centers, but Wayside in Macedon was by far the most helpful for a first-time gardener like myself. Jen was extremely knowledgeable but not at all overwhelming. I’m very excited to see my gardens in the springtime! Thanks again!
No profanity I fully support any citizen’s right to put a sign supporting their candidate of choice on their lawn or house, or to fly a flag showing what side of the political fence they sit. I don’t care who those signs support. Each one represents your personal opinion; it’s encouraging to see so many taking part in the democratic process. Few signs however have no place in public view in our town. One in particular does not support but rather denigrates an elected leader by means of the most obnoxious 4-letter word. Do you not realize that children may walk by on their way to school or the bus? Or out-of-towners who may drive by and think “what kind of community is this?” What about the public’s right to enjoy their town without being verbally insulted? So to residents who feel it necessary to display their opinions in such vulgar terms, I politely ask you to take them down. Show that you care more about healing our community than dividing it. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Hero to zero? You have no right to judge anyone. There is a wide variety of reasons for refusing the [vaccine],and none of them are your business! You aren’t questioning why the healthcare professionals are refusing this? [Stay home!] I sure hope you or a loved one wont need any of those “zeroes “ you mention because the worst healthcare crisis in any of our lifetimes is headed our way.
Pay it forward Thank you to the kind person who bought our coffee at the drive thru last week. Little acts like these make someone’s day!

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Do We Really Need a Booster Shot?
Depending on when we went for the COVID vaccine, we could be eligible for the booster now ... or not. Elderly seniors, as well as those in nursing homes and the immunocompromised, were first in line early in the year. The rest of us straggled in over the next several months. At this point, it’s unknown whether there should be a six- or eight-month wait before the booster. The Pfizer booster (called Comirnaty) is now available to those 65 and older and some others depending on risk and medical conditions. At this writing, Moderna is asking for authorization, and there is no booster yet for the J&J vaccine. Do we actually need a booster? We’re all wondering (my pharmacist says half of their calls are about boosters), and the answers are a mixed bag. A pulmonary physician at a major university hospital said if we’re under 65 and relatively healthy, no, we don’t need one. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says that the vaccines we already received will start to wear off, so yes, we should get the booster, starting with seniors and nursing-home residents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is calling for booster shots only for the immunocompromised, but not others. The World Health Organization is calling for a moratorium on shots until poor countries get theirs. While we wait for real answers, keep your vaccine record card where you can find it. You’ll need it, should you decide to get a booster. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Update window treatments to compensate for dropping temperatures. Trade your sheers for sturdy, draft-blocking panels. * To easily get keys on a keychain, use a staple remover to create an opening to slip the keys on. It is very effective and will keep you from getting frustrated. * When hammering a nail, try this save-your-finger trick: Use a clothespin to hold the nail steady, and then use your hammer to drive it in. Hammering into the wall? Push the nail through a strip of cardboard, and then hold the cardboard over the right spot. No more banged-up fingers or thumbs! * “At a party, someone spilled a cup of red wine on one of my throw pillows. I love the pillow, since it is just the right size and really soft, but I could not get the stain out. So I covered it with a new fabric. I ended up doing all the assorted pillows in the same fabric, and it made a big change in the room. I wish I had done it sooner.” -- I.F. in Pennsylvania * Bringing some plants indoors? Use styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom of pots when planting. They aren’t as heavy as rocks, but they do just as good a job. It makes the pots easier to move around should you need to. * “For easy-cleanup pancakes, use a turkey baster to ‘squirt’ the batter in the griddle or skillet. No drips, and it usually results in a pretty good circle, too!” -- A.J. in Florida

DON’T MISS THE GAME!!
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Today’s hearing aids are barely visible, highly effective and easy to afford.
Extreme Flatulence Is Noxious, Embarrassing ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: In 2008, I had a partial

sigmoid colectomy. Since then, I have had no recurrence of diverticulitis. The surgeon recommended that I not use laxatives, but rather take fiber gummies to keep things moving easily in addition to drinking lots of fluids. I am doing that, but my flatulence could power all the homes in a small city. It is difficult to control outbursts, which are noxious and embarrassing in the extreme. Is there any other way to avoid hard stools, straining and other unhealthy gastrointestinal situations? -- J.S. ANSWER: I am sorry for your embarrassment, but I agree with the surgeon that getting fiber and plenty of water is the safest and best way to prevent problems. However, maybe it isn’t just the fiber, but your diet that is at least partially responsible for the increased gas. You could try reducing your intake of foods in the cabbage family, onions, beans, corn and other gas-producers. Avoid carbonated beverages and any beverage containing artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol or xylitol. In some people, changing the bacteria that live in your gut (your microbiome) through probiotic supplements and a change of diet can reduce the amount of gas produced. There are other types of fiber supplements besides fiber gummies that might be better tolerated, or you can get fiber from food.

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density. Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) may increase your risk of breast cancer. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) launched clinical trials in 1991 to study the effects of HRT, among other medical/ lifestyle interventions, in 161,808 healthy postmenopausal women for impacts on incidence of heart disease, fractures, and breast and colorectal cancer. In 2002, results regarding HRT were published. Researchers found that the estrogen-only HRT group did not have higher incidence of breast cancer, but the risks far outweighed the benefits in the estrogenplus-progestin arm, which showed a 24% increase in breast cancer rates. BREAST CANCER SCREENING A clinical breast exam is an exam of the breast by a doctor or other health professional. The doctor will carefully feel the breasts and under the arms for lumps or anything else that seems unusual. It is not known if having clinical breast exams decreases the chance of dying from breast cancer. Breast self-exams may be done by women or men to check their breasts for lumps or other changes. It is important to know how your breasts usually look and feel. If you feel any lumps or notice any other changes, talk to your doctor. Doing breast self-exams has not been shown to decrease the chance of dying from breast cancer.

Crew Club Hosts the 16th Fairport Lift Bridge Regatta BY DP DUNN
I
t’s a beautiful late September early morning on the Canal in Fairport, NY, and the Fairport Crew Club boathouse is full of activity. Rowers are stretching, moving equipment and boats, called “shells,” and getting ready for their events. The air is filled with the sounds of youth, ready for competition, guided by their coaches and mentors.
By 8 AM, boats are on the water. Officials are in position. A light mist hangs just above the water. A crowd of parents, grandparents, and interested spectators line the canal shore waiting to watch these young rowers, and some Master Rowers, race along the canal. Event organizers were there much earlier, with the first Twitter tweet posting around 4:30 AM! Athletes and families arrived before 7 AM, yet their day might extend past 5 PM as equipment is cleaned and “The day was perfect with stowed.
cooler temperatures in the early morning and warm sun and light breezes during the races!”
Rowing is a sport, and it takes considerable time and commitment. “You’ll get in the best shape of your life,” said Dan, an engineering -DP DUNN manager and parent of two young ladies who row. His oldest daughter is a 5 year varsity-level veteran of FCC. According to Fairport Crew Club’s website, “Rowing is a considerable commitment for both the rower and the family. Practice is five days a week, and attendance is required. Rowing is not like other sports where a replacement can easily step into the game and perform just as well. Rowers develop a chemistry within their boat. Doing another sport while rowing is not advisable. The sport has 2 primary seasons: winter conditioning/spring and fall. We also have some summer programs that are optional. Rower-paid dues, travel expenses and parent expenses of approximately $1000 per year with hotel, uniforms, dues, etc. if the rower participates in all of the seasons and programs.” Unsurprisingly, rowing is highly competitive, and earning a spot on the team is challenging. But that’s the price of admittance to the rowing culture and community. Walking through the parking lot post-event, a bumper sticker succinctly states the level of required commitment: “Can’t, I’ve got Crew.”
Fairport 16th Annual Lift Bridge Regatta Champs
toss the rowers into the water. Coordination with commercial and pleasure craft on the canal was a united effort, and safety of the rowers was the priority. Event officials partnered with local amateur radio volunteers to provide safety and logistical communications during the races. A brief pause in the racing action was scheduled to facilitate passage of the Colonial Belle during her transit of the racecourse. The day was perfect with cooler temperatures in the early morning and warm sun and light breezes during the races. Rowers at the course Finish were clearly spent, having “left it all” on the water. Comradery between teammates was also extended to their competitors. Shouts of encouragement such as “Good race,” “Congratulations,” and “Great job!” were heard between competing team boats as they turned to row towards the dock and home. There seems to be a distinct absence of trash talking among rowers; they are truly ladies and gentlemen. Sportsmanship, physical and mental discipline, serious commitment, and the chance to compete on the beautiful canal setting make rowing unique among athletic events. Bonds are formed that turn into lifetime friendships. Lessons learned in the shell transform into actions and values that mold adults and pave pathways to fulfilling and successful lives. Rowers become coaches and event organizers, and the rowing community grows, benefiting younger rowers, and passing on life lessons. All on calm water, on a beautiful, sunny, late September day. For more information on rowing, or the Fairport Crew Club, visit their website at https://www.fairportcrew.org/. If your non-profit could benefit from logistical communications support, provided at no charge by local amateur radio operators, go to: https://www.rochesterham. org/public_service.htm for details.

This is the 16th Annual Fairport Lift Bridge Regatta, hosted by the Fairport Crew Club. A beautiful 2.6 mile stretch of canal between Kreag Road Park and the Fairport Crew Club boathouse near Perinton Park. Crews navigate turns as the canal winds its way north. Races, called Heats, match the skills of rowers in similar classes, such as Boys Novice, Women’s Masters, or Girls Varsity. Crew size may only be one, or as many as eight, rowers. The action is fast and exciting, with times running around 15 minutes depending on crew size and experience. In total, 30 races were run with 89 crews participating.

Pleading illness, he did not attend the surrender ceremony. * On Oct. 22, 1934, Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd is shot by FBI agents in Ohio. Floyd, who had been hunted for four years, used his last breath to deny his involvement in the infamous Kansas City Massacre, in which four officers were shot to death at a train station. * On Oct. 25, 1973, President Richard Nixon vetoes the War Powers Resolution, which would limit presidential power to commit armed forces abroad without Congressional approval. DID YOU KNOW? Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.
PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Some women who have a high risk of breast cancer may choose to have a risk-reducing mastectomy (the removal of both breasts when there are no signs of cancer). The risk of breast cancer is much lower in these women and most feel less anxious about their risk of breast cancer. However, it is very important to have a cancer risk assessment and counseling about the different ways to prevent breast cancer before making this decision.

SAFETY FIRST WHEN DRIVING WITH PETS
Penny Saver
Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.
Hope is 7 yrs. old. She was adopted from Pet Pride in 2019. She is very soft and loves to snuggle and get chin scratches. Her favorite toys are hair ties and anything that rolls. I don’t always get things done because she wants to snuggle and she’s too cute to tell her no. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Greyhounds are very fast. Some retired racing greyhounds can hit speeds as high as 45 miles per hour. While they only achieve such speeds for very short periods of time, that’s still pretty fast.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Come Join The Monroe Golf Club Family!
Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
