Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

Ability to customize: Independently owned restaurants may be more amenable to adapting recipes or making substitutions to meet diners’ requests. Skilled local chefs can think on the fly and modify recipes, which may not always be possible in chain establishments.

HOW TO BE MORE COURTEOUS WHILE DINING OUT
Be courteous to the server and fellow customers. It is important for all customers to wait their turn and avoid interrupting waiters when they are taking other customers’ orders. In addition, allow servers to mention the specials before ordering.

New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible.
First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.
Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadiantravelersabouttodepart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT
Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give theiryardsaneasternfeel, completewithakoipondanddecorativebridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal.
The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.
MASONRY & BASEMENT
Whether it’s Independence Day, St. Patrick’s Day or the holiday season, the bold hues that are synonymous with these events add a splash of color to rooms that can use a little design lift.
While some colors may be synonymous with certain times of year, homeowners can employ bold colors in their homes all year long. By embracing bold painting and decorating styles, homeowners can use fresh color palettes to make rooms more inviting and colorful.
Offer practical support. Cancer affects the body in a number of ways. Energy levels may wane and certain symptoms may arise. Side effects from treatments also can make it difficult to continue with daily tasks. So an offer to help with tasks associated with daily living, such as cooking meals, gardening, washing clothes, or cleaning up around the house, can be practical and much appreciated. Approach the individual and ask questions in pointed ways. Rather than, “What can I do to help?”, which may result in an answer of, “Nothing,” figure out a way to pitch in and then ask if that would be acceptable. This may be, “Would you like me to run to the supermarket for you today?”
HOW TO DISCUSS A CANCER DIAGNOSIS WITH YOUR EMPLOYER
Discuss how to share the news. Once your boss and HR department has been notified, seek their input regarding how to break the news to your colleagues. If you routinely work with people across multiple departments, it may be best to inform everyone through email, as it can be exhausting to break the news to each colleague individually. But it’s also alright if you prefer to keep the diagnosis under wraps. In the latter case, it might still be wise to inform those you work with closely each day, as that can help them prepare for increased responsibilities as your treatment progresses and potentially makes it hard for you to continue working full-time. When discussing how to share the news with an HR department, be specific about how much you want to share,as you may only feel comfortable discussing details of your diagnosis with certain coworkers, such as your boss.

HOW TO SUPPORT LOVED ONES WHO HAVE BREAST CANCER
Offer emotional support. Someone with breast cancer may just need a person who can be there and listen. A hug, a nod of understanding or even a companion who can chat and take the person’s mind off the cancer can be immensely helpful. Keep in mind that emotions may change on a dime, and some emotions may be directed at support systems. While it can feel hurtful, remember the real reason for any outburst is the disease. Patience is needed at all times.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE
Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

HOW TO HELP PETS IN THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICAN HELENE
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m heartbroken seeing the destruction in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina a er Hurricane Helene. ere must be a lot of lost, hungry and suffering pets. I want to fill my truck and trailer with pet food and drive it to where it’s most needed, but I’m not sure where to go. Do you have any advice? -- Maggie in upstate New York
DEAR MAGGIE: It is heartwarming knowing that you and other pet owners want to do something positive for people and their pets in these areas that have been so hard hit.
As I write this, organizations from across the country are getting in place, setting up in strategic locations so that they can distribute aid, assist with rescues and help recover those lost to this storm. With many major highways cut, travel is nearly impossible in North Carolina, and very difficult elsewhere.
e best thing that you can do right now is to stay put. Instead of driving supplies to disaster areas, start a fundraising drive and donate cash to an organization that is actively helping pets and their owners.
For example, the ASPCA is working with the Humane Society in Charlotte, North Carolina, to evacuate rescue and foster dogs from Asheville and surrounding areas. e Humane Society of the United States is doing likewise. Both organizations are helping owners with pet food and medical care, and providing shelter to animals without families.
Donating to these major organizations, or selecting a local shelter or rescue group in these areas to support now and in the months to come, will help immensely.

Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance. According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength.
Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.
not use cruise control. Because fall foliage can be so stunning to experience, many drivers are tempted to use the cruise control feature on their automobiles so they can pay more attention to the array of colors at their disposal. But cruise control should never be engaged when driving on wet roads or roads that may be covered in leaves. Such conditions require drivers to focus their undivided attention on the road ahead of them. When drivers suddenly encounter slick roads, easing off the accelerator rather than quickly applying the brakes can be the safest response, but such a response is impossible when cruise control is engaged.

* Many more of us are using the reusable fabric shopping bags nowadays. A few cities have banned the use of plastic bags for retail shops. ese bags are much better for the environment, and can hold a lot more groceries per bag. One thing many people forget to do is wash them. You can take out the plastic insert (if there is one) and toss them in the washing machine. Hang to dry and you’re carrying around a much cleaner bag!

Variousorganizationsurgewomentofamiliarizethemselveswiththeirbreastsandconduct somewhat routine self-exams so they can uncover any lumps or other issues that may warrant further examination by a physician. Though self-exams can lead to discovery of breast cancer when the disease is most treatable, theWorld Health Organization notes that as many as 90 percent of breast masses are not cancerous. Non-cancerous abnormalities may be benign masses such as fibroadenoma and cysts or indicative of infection. It’s also important that women recognize that breast cancer is not always accompanied by a lump. In fact, the Mayo Clinic reports that many women with breast cancer never experience any signs or symptoms of the disease. In such instances, the disease is discovered during screening tests, which include mammograms.

Teri Pink
A Journey of Rescue, Healing, and Homemade Dog Treats
BY SUZIE WELLS
Teri Pink’s story is one of resilience, passion, and an unyielding love for dogs. Growing up in Honeoye, NY, she always had a dog by her side. “ ey were part of the family,” Teri recalls. Now, as a single mother raising two teen boys, she has carried on that tradition, surrounded by a bustling pack of her own dogs and foster pups. Her life’s journey, while not without its challenges, has led her to a new chapter focused on fostering dogs, cra ing homemade organic dog treats, and helping shelter dogs find forever homes.
Teri’s childhood was filled with dogs, and her connection to them only deepened through the years. A er surviving domestic violence, she found herself and her boys rebuilding their lives independently for the past twelve years. During this period, they welcomed their first foster dog, Henry, from Pibbles N More Rescue (www.PMARinc.org), a pivotal moment that would steer Teri towards her calling.
“Meeting the founder of the rescue, Saleena McLaughlin, and all the amazing, selfless people there is what led my boys and me into fostering,” Teri shares. Over the years, Teri and her family have fostered 87 dogs, each experience a rollercoaster of emotions. “ ere’s been tears, heartache, laughter, cursing, but most of all, so much immeasurable love and happiness.”
Stepping back from a career in real estate and property management to pursue dreams in veterinary medicine, Teri discovered a love for making food and treats for her own dogs, Walter, Mabel, Betsy Mae, Greta, and Prince. “I want to know what they’re eating and make sure they’re getting all the healthy, nutrient-filled foods that I feed us,” Teri explains.
With encouragement from close friends like Kim Duvall and Maggie Coleman, Teri turned her passion into a business. “ ey always support anything I get my crazy self into,” she laughs. So, in August, Pink’s Pup Treats was born, focusing on simple, organic ingredients designed to promote dogs’ health and longevity. Her treats are packed with ingredients that aid in digestion, reduce inflammation, and increase vitamin intake.
Teri’s commitment to helping dogs doesn’t stop with treats, though. Shelter and foster dogs play a starring role in her business. Inspired by her current foster pup, Rudy, Teri decided to feature adoptable
dogs on her treat packages, giving them extra visibility. She explains, “Rudy was born into foster care and has lived his entire first year of life between several fosters. He laid his head in my lap while I was creating my website, and I said, ‘You know what? Maybe if I featured a dog that is struggling to get adopted on my treats, it would give them more exposure and help!’”
Every month, Teri plans to release a new flavor that features an “Adopt Me” dog. Her goal is to highlight local shelter and foster dogs, especially those who are older, have health issues, or need to be the only pet in a home. is initiative aligns with her broader dream of building a foster care facility where she can take in dogs with special needs, older dogs in hospice care, and those who need extra time to heal from past trauma. Teri’s passion for rescue is deeply personal. “Being a survivor of domestic violence, I was one of those people who found themselves in a situation they never dreamed they’d be in. I am trying to be the help I so desperately needed,” she reflects. Her dedication to fostering and rehoming dogs stems from a deep empathy for both people and animals in crisis. “No living soul deserves to live an unhappy life, especially one that truly has no desire other than to love and be loved.”
rough it all, Teri remains focused on what matters most to her: her family, her dogs, and her community. “I want to wake up every day and know that I have what I need to get by and that the people and pups around me are happy,” she says. “It brings me joy to bring other people joy, so I will continue to help dogs and people come together to find their best friends.” In a world where rescue organizations are overwhelmed, Teri is determined to make a difference, one dog treat at a time.

Endometrial Biopsy Indicated for Woman With Blood in Urine
DEAR DR. ROACH: About three months ago, I bled a bit while urinating. This was the first (and only) time in over 30 years that this happened since I went through menopause. An ultrasound was performed, and they found a mildly thickened endometrium (6.1 mm) with scattered cystic change and without focal lesion.
My gynecologist is suggesting an endometrial biopsy. I am concerned because I have no symptoms other than kidney stones. I’m due to see a urologist, but even with my kidney stones, I have no symptoms. I am 80 and concerned about anesthesia. Should I go ahead with the biopsy? - L.O.
ANSWER: A thickened endometrium is concerning for uterine cancer. The most common symptom of uterine cancer is abnormal uterine bleeding. This usually takes the form of red, pink or brown spotting. However, it sounds like you had blood in your urine, which is more concerning for kidney stones than uterine bleeding.
Your ultrasound is abnormal; 5 mm is the maximum thickness for a normal endometrium. Getting a biopsy is clearly the recommended procedure, as it gives guidance on the next steps. Still, your risk of uterine cancer is small. You do not have to proceed with the biopsy if you do not want to. An endometrial biopsy is an in-office procedure with minimal risk. My textbooks say there is minimal pain, but my patients tell me this isn’t always the case. You don’t have to receive anesthesia; you can take pain medication (such as naproxen), get a local anesthetic, or do both. I’ve had several patients who’ve requested a nerve block and were very happy with their decision. If the biopsy shows cancer of the endometrium, surgery is the preferred treatment, but radiation is also a possibility for some people.
Breast cancer is second only to non-melanoma skin cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States. Female breast cancer represents 15% of all new cancer cases in our country.

WAYS TO REDUCE BREAST CANCER RISK
Consume a healthy diet. The link between diet and breast cancer risk is still being studied. However, research suggests that a diet high in vegetables and fruit, and calciumrich dairy products, but low in red and processed meats may lower breast cancer risk.

Hometown People
I love reading the Hometown Stories column each week. Learning about local people and organizations doing amazing things makes me thankful to live in such a great community. In an age of increasing technology and weaker personal connections, it's great to know our communities still thrive and bring people together. Thank you to everyone who has been featured on that page and I look forward to learning more about other great folks around town!
Why can’t things be easy?
I called [national fix it company] to repair a washing machine. First they had a tech come out that said we needed to order a part but that we could get it cheaper online. So we ordered it online and called the company to come back. They replaced the part and the machine was working for a short time and then stopped again. They came back again and said the same part was broken but that it wasn’t covered under warranty since we bought it online. So now we have to buy the same part again and it will take 3 weeks for it to arrive. UGH.
Dockworkers Strike
Greed has already begun. If there’s a shortage of items due to the strike, why do businesses get away with raising prices of items already in stock? Businesses already paid for the items that are staged in their stockrooms. A shortage is one thing, but price increases is price gouging.

FINDING WORK AFTER 50
Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work.
Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers55andolderinAugustof2016,sixyearsaftertheGreatRecession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent.
Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updatedtheirrésuméstoreflecttheirmostrecentprofessionalexperience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories.
Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather.
Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity.
Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates.
Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE
Be mindful of decorum. The internet is a largely informal “place,” but professionals should be mindful of decorum when networking online. Resist the temptation to use shorthand, slang or less formal language when contacting other professionals, as doing so can make you appear unprofessional. In addition, avoid making potentially controversial or contentious comments on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
