Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

Taking Preventative Measures Against Sun Exposure Is Essential
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about suntanning. First off, I want to say that I get yearly skin cancer checks, love the sun, and hardly ever use suntan lotion. I monitor my time outside, so as not to get a sunburn. I see warnings about certain days being high ultraviolet (UV) days. Are they talking about UVA or UVB, and which one gives you a tan? -- S.K.
ANSWER: You’re not going to like my answer, because all types of UV light exposure, whether they lead to a sunburn or suntan, cause damage to the skin and lead to an increased risk of skin cancer. A tan from sunlight leads to a small degree of protection against further UV light damage, but there is still ongoing skin damage with UV light exposure. Even people with very dark skin are susceptible to skin cancer, although their risk is a lot less than others. UVA light is more constant throughout the year and penetrates deeper into the skin. UVB light is stronger near the equator, at higher altitudes, and closer to the summer solstice. The UV index reported by the National Weather Service considers both UVA and UVB light in its calculations, as well as the time of year, altitude, and cloud cover.
Both UVA and UVB light cause the skin to tan, but tanning from UVA light alone (for example, in a tanning machine) doesn’t provide any protection from the sun. So, while I am at least glad that you aren’t exposing yourself enough to get burned, I don’t agree with being out in the sun to get tanned. I do recommend the liberal use of a sunscreen with protection against both UVA and UVB. It needs to be used in a large-enough quantity to provide protection -- approximately an ounce for an average-sized body, plus another teaspoon for the face and neck. I recommend a high-SPF sunscreen (30 or more). I buy mineral sunscreens such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for myself and my family. Finally, sunscreen needs to be reapplied regularly, especially when exercising or swimming.
Staying out of the sun, wearing sun-protective clothing, and wearing sunscreen will not only help you avoid cancer, but also help you avoid problems that I see in my older patients, who did what you did when they were young. Now they have thinned skin that bleeds easily, as well as “age spots” and other signs of skin damage from the sun, including wrinkles.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.
Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

DEAR CLARA: You’re absolutely right! While it can be lots of fun to celebrate Halloween with your pet, owners need to protect them from risks that can endanger them during the fun.
If you’re having a Halloween party, consider sending your pet to a friend or family member for the evening or give them a safe place to hang out while the guests are there -- like your bedroom or a back room. Make sure they have a comfy bed or blanket, water and toys. You can bring a pet out to meet the party guests if they are well socialized and calm in group settings. Once your dog or cat (or rabbit or bird or iguana) has said hello to everyone, take them back to their safe room.
Costumes on pets are so much fun, but be sure that the costume isn’t constrictive and that wearing it doesn’t cause them anxiety. A few minutes at a time is recommended -- enough time to get some cute photos for your Instagram.
Keep all candies, cookies and sweet treats out of reach of your pets. Chocolate is especially dangerous for dogs. Likewise, if you have party snacks out, keep them up high. Avocado, onions and grapes are also dangerous foods for dogs and cats.
If you’re trick-or-treating with your pet, keep them on a leash at all times. at includes cats! It’s dark, the streets are unfamiliar and there are lots of strange characters walking around. Your pet can get scared and run off.

Children play in parks, people walk on trails and paths and other dogs should have the right to enjoy the outdoors as well. Don’t leave your dog’s mess for someone else to clean up or for it to cause issues. Be respectful and responsible. You chose to get a dog and cleaning up after them goes right along with having them; it’s not that hard.

Saw construction ahead so took an alternative route through a nearby neighborhood to stay out of the construction workers’ way and avoid delays. Came up to a large loader which was fine because he was in his own lane, with no other cars or obstacles on that stretch of road. Stayed in my lane, even hugging the right side to give plenty of room. As we passed each other going opposite directions towards each other, a golf cart ATV behind him came whipping out in reverse, almost all the way over into my lane just to turn the thing around. I made sure to stay in my lane the whole time (about 25 mph, not 50) and we might have come within a few feet of each other as he popped out because he was whipping almost all the way over into my lane with little warning/reason though there were no cones or flagman or anything like that so he should have looked first before whipping out so fast and so far or turn tighter because those things have a tighter turning radius than that or do a 3pt turn. But he yelled at me.

The celebration that is now known as the Day of the Dead originally landed on the ninth month of the Aztec calendar and was observed for the entire month. Charlotte’s roots trace back to the village of North Duffield in York, UK. She pursued her Bachelor of Arts degree at Bird College Conservatoire of Dance and Musical eatre in London. ose six years were incredibly intense, she says, describing dancing from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., running from one studio to another, changing hairstyles between classes, “but I wouldn’t trade those years for anything.”
A er a vacation to Florida in 2014, Charlotte extended her vacation on a whim and made the bold choice to stay, moving to the US at 23 “with just a suitcase of vacation clothes.” Today, Charlotte lives in Rochester with her Scottish husband, Jaime, who is the director of the soccer club, RNYFC, and their three-year-old daughter, Isla.
Charlotte dreamed of being a ballerina, training through the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and British Ballet Organization (BBO) syllabi. “To this day, I remind my teenage students to dance for that inner child, encouraging them to ‘be that sugar plum fairy’ they once imagined, even during simple exercises at the barre!”
When she realized she might not have the “required” facility to join the Royal Ballet School, Charlotte turned her attention to jazz, which opened up a new world and led her to musical theater, and she “truly found my passion. It allowed me to express myself in a way ballet didn’t, with its more dynamic and less restrictive movements.”
Performing, whether through ballet or jazz, had always been her true love, but it was the freedom of jazz that sparked her creativity.
Charlotte treasures her time at Bird College, where she says, “We danced from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, constantly changing hairstyles from ballet buns to French twists in between classes,” she recalls. “It was tough, but it shaped me both professionally and personally.” ose years were some of the most challenging but rewarding of her life, and the friendships she forged during that time remain today.
Charlotte didn’t set out to become a dance teacher or studio owner. She reflects that “it’s funny how life takes you in directions you never imagined.” When she first moved to the U.S., she took a summer job at
a dance studio to save money for auditions in NYC, and she says, “I can’t pinpoint a single moment when my mindset shi ed, but I came to realize that I am my most authentic self when I’m teaching in front of a group of dance students.”
She admits she never enjoyed the auditioning “game,” and teaching offered her a way to dance every day without the “grueling rejection” of the performing industry. Over time, her desire to be on stage faded, and she found immense joy in seeing her students succeed. Watching them perform became more rewarding than performing herself, and she says, “Each time I see my students grow, gain confidence, and achieve their goals, I am reminded that my purpose lies not just in teaching dance but in inspiring and upli ing the next generation.”
Charlotte believes dance plays a crucial role in teaching discipline, patience, and perseverance – qualities she feels are increasingly rare in a world of instant gratification. “Dance teaches you to work hard over time for a long-term goal. It shapes well-rounded, hardworking individuals who know the value of dedication.”
For those aspiring to a dance career, Charlotte’s message is simple: “Be unapologetically yourself. Confidence is everything. When you believe in yourself, others will too.”
As for the future, Charlotte is focused on growth... both for herself and for Roc Dance. “I want to continue creating opportunities for my students, whether through community outreach, performances, or scholarships.” She also emphasizes the importance of balancing her passion for dance with her role as a mother. “I want my daughter to grow up knowing that no dream is too big. With hard work, she can achieve anything.”
From a young girl dreaming of being a ballerina in York to an inspiring dance educator in Rochester, Charlotte Phillips’ journey is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and the enduring love for dance.
