Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, along with their employees. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. That’s also true in Canada, where 68.8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she - or a relative - will need a job. Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals.
The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. Spend the same $100 at a national retailer and only $14 stays.
National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses may also be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains.
Prepare a familiar dish.
Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare.

Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness andlossofinterest.TheMayoClinicsaysdepressioncanproduceavariety of symptoms and affect the way a person thinks, acts and feels. Symptoms may include changes in sleeping patterns, anxiety, fatigue, weight gain or weight loss, unexplained aches and pains, and difficulty concentrating.
A report published in the Lancet in 2012 suggests that a lack of exercise now causes as many deaths across the globe as smoking. A team of 33 researchers representing centers around the world contributed to the study. It was determined that about onethird of all adults are not getting enough physical activity to keep them healthy and to prevent the nearly 5.3 million deaths per year that can be linked to sedentary lifestyles. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. It’s also beneficial to do a combination of activities for exercise variety.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old man in reasonably good health. When I had trouble falling asleep, I would take a swig of Zzzquil, which worked perfectly every time. However, since then, my cardiologist told me to stop taking such products, so I turned to 5-mg tablets of melatonin in the evening to help induce drowsiness. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t.
One night, after I had three beers, I also took two gelcaps of Gas-X to alleviate the bloated feeling just before bed. It was about an hour or so after the melatonin, and I quickly dozed off to sleep. Since then, I noticed that if I awaken in the night and take another Gas-X, I shortly doze off again and have remarkable, complex dreams. Is this self-protocol of mine medically unsound in any way?
ANSWER: There’s a lot going on here. First off, I completely agree with your cardiologist that the sleep aid you were taking, like most over-the-counter sleep aids, contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that sedates some people. The problem with this medicine is that the quality of sleep isn’t good for many people. It also increases the risk of falls in older people and the risk of motor vehicle accidents in people who drive. It’s not a good choice for older adults.
Melatonin is safer and has fewer side effect, one of them being vivid dreams. However, 5 mg is a big dose. I usually recommend 0.5-1 mg in my older patients. Gas-X (simethicone) isn’t absorbed into the body and shouldn’t cause vivid dreams. A search found no reports of abnormal dreams with simethicone, so it was almost certainly the melatonin that caused the dreams. Maybe Gas-X allowed you to sleep while the melatonin was still around enough to give you vivid dreams.
In addition, three beers on a regular basis are more than what is considered healthy for anyone, and a man in his 80s will be affected by three beers much more than a younger man of the same size.
DR. ROACH WRITES: Seven years ago, I went to the emergency room and was told I had blood clots in my arms that traveled to my lungs. I started Eliquis. The doctor said I had a problem with factor V, but I don’t have my blood results. Do I need to stay on this blood thinner? I know it has severe side effects.
ANSWER: Factor V is a protein that is critical in making clots, and an abnormality in this protein can make a person bleed (although this is very rare). What’s more common is a condition called factor V Leiden (FVL), which makes the body resistant to the activated protein C, a natural anticoagulant. (Anticoagulants decrease blood-clotting and are sometimes referred to as “blood thinners.”) So, the net effect of FVL is that it makes blood clots a little more likely. Many people have FVL, but most will not develop a blood clot.
However, you apparently developed blood clots in both arms that caused the clots to move to the lungs, which are called pulmonary emboli. Determining the duration of therapy takes clinical judgment. Because you had clots in your arms rather than your legs, had a pulmonary embolus, and have FVL, some experts would treat you for the rest of your lifetime. I wouldn’t say that Eliquis has severe side effects. Because it reduces blood-clotting, there is a chance of bleeding. For most people with a low to average risk of bleeding, the likelihood is on the order of 1% to 2% per year. If the risk of a life-threatening clot is higher than the risk of bleeding, then continued anticoagulation is preferred.

Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness.
“There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.
Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.
Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores.
Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry.
Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key.
Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago.Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.
While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

The Honeoye Falls Holiday Parade is a cherished tradition, drawing thousands of community members each year to the heart of the village. For over three decades, this festive event not only spreads holiday cheer but also showcases the dedication of the Honeoye Falls Fire Department (HFFD) and countless other contributors who make it possible.
According to Anthony Militello, Vice President of the HFFD, and Bill Soehner, Past President of the HFFD, the planning process has become morestreamlinedovertheyears. eprimaryfocusremainsreachingoutto past participants, such as fire departments and community organizations, while incorporating new ideas whenever possible. However, they admit that one annual challenge persists: making sure Santa is available.
e event relies on a collaborative effort from various organizations and individuals throughout the community. e Village of Honeoye Falls plays a key role in judging and supporting the parade, while local businesses add their own festive touches by offering cookies and hot chocolate to attendees before and a er the parade. Many of these contributions are informal, reflecting the organic enthusiasm surrounding the parade. Militello and Soehner say, “We love to see that there are many other organizations that help make it such an enjoyable night in the village.”
e parade has evolved in creativity as well, the firefighters say. e HF-L school district, for instance, has contributed increasingly elaborate entries in recent years. e improvements in quality and creativity among participants have enhanced the parade experience for both organizers and attendees.
e list of standout participants is extensive and growing. From the Pittsford Fire Department’s band to the Richmond Fire District, which o en aims to secure the “best fire department entry” award, the event draws impressive contributions from both nearby and distant communities. Other notable participants include the local Rotary Club, HF-L school district and scout organizations, the VFW, and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, each bringing their own festive spirit to the evening.

Initially, the parade route spanned just a few blocks from Norton Street to the firehouse. Today, it has expanded significantly, with participation increasing not only locally but also from fire departments further afield.
For the Honeoye Falls Fire Department, the parade has become a treasured tradition. “It is absolutely a tradition,” Militello and Soehner say. “It’s not a fundraising event; it’s just our way to give back in a little different way each year.” is spirit of giving extends beyond the spectacle of the parade itself. Categories such as “best fire department entry” and “best community entry” receive prize money, and this year, a new food vendor has pledged to donate proceeds to the local food cupboard, ensuring that the event supports those in need.
One of the most memorable aspects of the parade is the joy it brings to children. Each year, the firehouse transforms into a hub of excitement as kids eagerly line up to meet Santa. e sight of families and friends gathering together, soaking in the festive atmosphere, makes the months of preparation worthwhile for organizers.
Beyond entertainment, the parade serves as an opportunity for the fire department to connect with the community. Attendees can donate to the department or learn about volunteer opportunities, further strengthening ties between the department and the village it serves. For organizers like Militello and Soehner, the event is a labor of love that reinforces the bonds of a close-knit community.
As this year’s parade approaches (12/14/24), the fire department is eager to welcome residents and visitors alike. ey say, “We hope to see the community come together as in years past. Don’t forget to stop by the firehouse for cookies and a chance to meet Santa.”

One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

I only have one cat, and I thought, for a while, that I could get away without vaccinating her. Fortunately, a friend convinced me otherwise.
It turns out that it doesn’t take much to protect my baby when she depends on me to take care of her. I’ve never gone without just to pay for “Racquel’s” vaccinations, and in turn, she is a healthy cat who brings so much companionship to my life. However, these clinics o en don’t advertise extensively due to costs, so you may need to search a bit. Contact your city or county government to see if any clinics are being held nearby, or stop in to major pet supply retailers like Petco, which o en sponsor shot clinics. If not, their workers o en know about pet health clinics nearby.

On Nov 14th, my car was towed to the tire place on [local road]. I trusted the tow truck driver to tow it there (1 or 2 miles) and at least lock the vehicle before giving the key to the tire associate. To make a long story short, when the car was fixed and I drove it home, the hatchback had been broken into. My camping canvas bag was missing with a kitchen set of knives worth $100-$200 gone. My insurance papers were missing from the glove compartment.
Never assume a towing company will lock your vehicle. The young man driving told me he had done this for 20 years and knew what he was doing. Really? Locking the car isn't included?
