How To Road Trip In An Electric Car

Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

ENJOY IRISH COFFEE THIS ST. PATRICK’S DAY

St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with many things, most notably the jovial atmosphere of the various events celebrating both the life of St. Patrick and Irish culture.

New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are known for the Big Apple’s impressive parade up Fifth Avenue, while few who have partaken of Patty’s Day festivities in Chicago can forget the green Chicago River. Celebrations may vary from city to city, but it’s a good bet that celebrants will hear some traditional Irish music, enjoy a pint of Guinness and/or join the masses wearing green wherever they end up this St. Patrick’s Day. Drinking Irish coffee is another St. Patrick’s Day tradition many revelers enjoy. Few may indulge in Irish coffee throughout the year, but this special concoction can be a great way to warm up after attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the often chilly March temperatures.

Cocktails made with coffee date back quite far, but Irish coffee does not have to go back too far to trace its history. In the mid-20th century, chef Joe Sheridan was working in Foynes, County Limerick when a group of United States-bound travelers found themselves stranded due to inclement weather that grounded their plane. Whether he was trying to warm them up or wake them up after their ordeal, Sheridan served the passengers coffee with a little bit of Irish whiskey mixed in. When the group inquired as to what they were drinking, Sheridan reportedly told them, “that’s Irish coffee.”

Rooms Can Serve

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

Potential Culprits Behind Thinning Grass

Ascochyta leaf blight

Lawns suffering from ascochyta leaf blight will become straw-colored. According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho®, when a lawn is affected by ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho® notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it’s seemingly been cured.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY

In ancient Ireland, the shamrock symbolized rebirth, particularly the rebirth of warmer weather. But the shamrock also has more specific ties to St. Patrick, and remains one of the most recognizable symbols associated with his feast day. Historians believe that, on his return to Ireland (a native of Great Britain, St. Patrick was first taken to Ireland after being kidnapped by pirates, later returning as a Christian missionary after his release), St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach the natives about the Holy Trinity. In fact, an image of St. Patrick holding a shamrock first appeared on coins in 1675. The shamrock’s status as a symbol would continue to evolve when it became a figure of Irish patriotism during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. In 2003, the shamrock was registered as an international trademark by the Irish government.

In Cats, Ear Infection Can Have Subtle Symptoms

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat Chester seemed perfectly healthy, but when I brought him in for his annual checkup, the veterinarian said that he has an ear infection. I didn’t notice any behavior or odd symptoms previously. I gave Chester the expensive eardrops he was prescribed, and he seems just ne. Was the vet just making up the infection? -- Jeanine C., Bu alo, New York

DEAR JEANINE: Cats are really good at hiding the symptoms of an illness. I’m glad you brought Chester in for his regular checkup, because those are very helpful in determining hidden acute problems like an ear infection, and noting potential problems (for example, if his weight is getting higher than normal, or he’s developing arthritis).

Now that Chester has been treated, keep an eye out for signs of the infection recurring. Look, listen and smell (yes, smell!) around his ears periodically and note certain behaviors. Hold Chester on your lap and shine a little ashlight into each ear.

A healthy ear is pale pink, with little to no earwax visible and no debris.

Trouble signs include: A strong odor from the ear; lots of earwax buildup; debris or discharge that looks like co ee grounds; or discharge that is yellow or black. You (or the vet) may see redness or swelling of the ear ap or in the ear canal.

Ear infections cause behavioral changes, too. Some of them are subtle: Chester may shake his head a er you scratch around his ears, or he may tilt his head more in one direction than another. More serious symptoms include loss of balance, disorientation, hearing loss or even facial paralysis.
