EASTWAY EDITION

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2016

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!

7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

The low interest rates are sparking a rash of refinancing activity, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Rates have been below 5.5% for two years. For most people who have refinanced or purchased since then, there’s little benefit to refinancing. But when rates drop below 4.5%, then it’s worth looking into.

Seniors and exericse: Tips to avoid injuries, get healthy

Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise can improve mood, promote an active lifestyle and reduce a person’s risk for a host of ailments, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite the importance of exercise, many people live sedentary lifestyles into their golden years. Seniors who want to embrace a healthier way of life and get more physically active should first consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen. Certain medications may limit just how far seniors can push themselves, while preexisting conditions may make specific types of exercise off limits. After discussing their limitations with their physicians and developing a safe exercise routine, seniors can heed the following tips to avoid injury but still get healthy. · Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner,

at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services. · Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises. · Stretch. Bodies that have been inactive for lengthy periods of time are inflexible, and lack of flexibility increases your risk for injury. The AAOS recommends that seniors warm up their bodies before stretching with five to 10 minutes of low-intensity activity such as walking. Then stretch gently, remembering to relax and breathe during each stretch. · Switch things up. When strength training, do not work the same muscle group two days in a row. Muscles need time to recover. If you prefer circuit strength training where you exercise various muscle groups in one day, do not strength train on back-to-back days, leaving at least one day in between strength training sessions so muscles have ample time to recover.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I walk 30-60 minutes about four times a week and drink several times from a water bottle that I carry with me. Would it be OK to occasionally substitute caffeine-free diet soda for the water? ANSWER: I’ve talked a few times about diet soda, and the controversy about whether it helps people lose weight or whether, despite having zero calories, it makes people more likely to gain weight. There has been evidence for both. A recent and fascinating study was published showing that artificially sweetened beverages predispose a person to higher blood sugars, and that the effect was due to changes in the bacteria in our gut (called the microbiome). These bacteria have become the focus of intensive study of how important they are for our overall health. I recommend against habitual use of artificially sweetened beverages. Occasional use of diet soda is unlikely to harm much; however, water -- still or bubbly, plain or with a wedge of fruit -- is the best and most natural way to hydrate. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 68 years old, and will be having bypass surgery soon. After my surgery, will L-arginine be good for my heart? I know I will be walking every day. -- G.J.S. ANSWER: L-arginine, an amino acid, has been shown to increase nitric oxide in blood vessels of people with high blood cholesterol and blockages in their arteries. There are two studies I know of that showed no effect from arginine on blood flow or inflammation. On the other hand, one study showed that supplements of arginine, along with phytoestrogens, B vitamins and vitamins C and E (as part of a medical nutrition bar) in people with angina improved some blood flow measurements and the ability to exercise on the treadmill. It also has been shown to have some benefits in people with heart failure. Based on these studies, I don’t recommend arginine after cardiac bypass surgery. However, there may some benefit, and since it is unlikely to be harmful, I wouldn’t try to dissuade someone who wanted to give it a try. The booklet on heart attacks, America’s No. 1 killer, explains what happens, how they are treated and how they can be avoided. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had radiation treatment in 2011 for a goiter. I know tanning beds are very dangerous, but are spray tans dangerous for me? -- V.V. ANSWER: Dihydroxyacetone, the most common coloring agent in spray-on tans, is generally considered safe, but you should avoid getting it around your eyes, mouth and nose. There is some controversy, but the Food and Drug Administration has considered it safe. The radiation treatment for goiter slightly increases risk for cancer, especially leukemia. I think it reasonable to do what you can to reduce cancer risk, but I don’t think tanning spray is a big risk. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. The Finger Lakes Concert Band, under the direction of Gregory Kane, celebrated the holidays with a special concert entitled “In the Spirit of Giving” on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the Canandaigua Academy Auditorium, 435 East Street, Canandaigua, NY. According to Kane, “The concert is our gift to the Canandaigua community.” Traditional Christmas favorites, as well as lesser-known but wonderful seasonal additions, were featured in the performance. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Babes in Toyland,” “The Nutcracker” and “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” were included in the festive arrangements along with a beautiful composition of “Blue Lake.” Sponsored by Hochstein School of Music & Dance and comprised of adult instrumentalists and advanced high school students from the Greater Finger Lakes community, the Finger Lakes Concert Band rehearses weekly and gives several concerts per year featuring a wide variety of music ranging from standard wind band literature and orchestral transcriptions to music of the jazz and pop idioms. Mr. Gregory Kane currently teaches music in the Canandaigua school system

and is a passionate believer that music should be taught in all schools to children of all ages. As a graduate of The Crane School of Music, he holds Bachelor’s degrees in both Music Education and French Horn Performance. He also holds a Master of Music degree in Music Education from Ithaca College in addition to completing coursework at the Eastman School of Music. As a performer, he enjoys performing as a jazz pianist, as well as on the French Horn. He has performed with the Monroe County Music Educators Wind Ensemble, Southern Tier Symphony Orchestra, Southern Tier All-Star Jazz Band, Greater Finger Lakes Jazz Orchestra, Hornell Area Wind Ensemble, Honeoye Falls Community Band and at various other freelance performances. The Finger Lakes Concert Band (FLCB) is in its 32nd season and is comprised of adult instrumentalists and advanced high school students from all parts of the Finger Lakes region. Under the auspices of Hochstein School of Music and Dance, the Finger Lakes Concert Band rehearses weekly and performs several concerts per year featuring a wide variety of music ranging from standard wind band literature and orchestral transcriptions to music of the jazz and pop idioms. D id you k now ? Building a home gym inside your home can motivate you to w orkout more often and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Fitness experts advise that homeow ners building a home gym in their homes emphasize lighting in the room that w ill soon transform into a gym. A w ell-lit room, w hether the light is coming from several w indow s, a door or recessed lighting in the ceiling, can help men and w omen maintain their energy levels throughout their w orkouts, w hereas darker rooms can lead to feelings of sluggishness, w hich can compromise w orkout routines. In addition, w hen building a home gym, keep the room free of clutter and unnecessary items that w ill only be a distractions during w orkouts. Potentially valuable additions to home gyms include plants, w hich can increase oxygen levels in the room, and at least one mirror, w hich can help men and w omen focus on their movements and ensure they are performing exercises correctly. Homeow ners building a home gym also should consider finding room for aw all-mounted television to make time spent on elliptical machines or treadmills less monotonous. If possible, homeow ners should connect a streaming device to the television so they can catch up on their favorite show s or w atch movies as they burn calories. It’s also good to find space for a mini refrigerator in the gym, w hich should be kept w ell stocked w ith w ater. This can prevent runs to the kitchen in the middle of a w orkout.

Catering To Your Personality When It Comes To Household Chores (ARA) - When it comes to household chores, everyone has their own style of cleaning, doing laundry and organizing. Matching your cleaning habits to your personal style can help ensure things get done quickly and efficiently, since you know what works for you. But what happens if you haven’t discovered your cleaning personality? All it takes is a quick assessment to determine your cleaning personality. Consider these options: * Tidying the house - When it’s time to organize and put away the clutter in your house, do you typically stuff everything into a closet and jam the door shut, or do you try and find a home for each and every item? If you can relate to the former, you may be more interested in finding a quick dusting option, like a feather duster. However, for those who like to spend time organizing their clutter, using a specialized dust cloth and polishing solution that deep cleans and gives your furniture a fresh smell is a better solution. * Handling the laundry - Are you always in a rush to get just one more load completed, or do you take the time to carefully fold each and every piece of clothing immediately when it comes out of the dryer? For those who are in a rush, the Bounce Dryer Bar is a perfect solution for making your laundry routine more convenient. No need to worry about freshness, because the bar sticks to the drum of your dryer and automatically freshens, helps reduce static and softens load after load. If you like to take the time to control the amount of freshness that you get from each step of the laundry process, then using classic Bounce Dryer Sheets might be a better fit for you. * Keeping the home fresh-smelling - Do you have a different product for every cleaning situation in your home, or do you like to buy products that you can use for more than one thing? When you run into a smelly situation in your home - from the gym bag, to your car, to the trash can under your kitchen sink - you have two options. You can clean the source of the smell by hand, in which case you will need a variety of products such as soap, sponges, disinfectant and a towel, depending on the situation. Or, you can simplify your cleaning routine and tuck a few Bounce dryer sheets into the container (or under the car seat) to help keep things smelling fresh. Once you figure out your cleaning and home organization style, make sure you have the correct products on hand to help you accomplish your chores in an orderly fashion. It will make the process less painful, and you’ll be able to accomplish the work more efficiently.

The December 3rd Santa’s Coming to Town event was again well attended and appreciated by the parents and community, with lots of fun for the children. Thanks to the Hancock family and Rotary Interact volunteers, including Sarah Carney, Madison Luft and Eliza Kime for make and take craft projects. Thanks to Thinking of You Photography by Greg and Peggy Norry for photos with Santa, always a big hit. ACS Art students including Carolyn Farmer, Parker Hughes, Izzy Marzec and Madison Marzec were kept very busy and did a fantastic job with face painting. Thanks to the Avon United Methodist Women who provided tempting cookie arrangements beautifully wrapped for the bake sale. Thanks to The Avon Preservation & Historical Society who offered beautiful poinsettias and crafts. Thanks to the Girl Scouts of WNY for their participation. Of course, thanks to all the volunteers and Avon Central School, Tops Markets and Dunkin Donuts for donations for the event. What a wonderful, generous and supportive community that we live in! On November 20th my 3 month old son and I were driving down Route 77 when our car fishtailed and rolled off the road into a ditch. As a first time mom the terror I felt was unimaginable. I wanted to express my gratitude to the woman and her son who graciously let us stay in their pickup truck while we waited for the EMT to arrive. I regret never getting your name to send our thanks, the prayer blanket you gave my son to keep him warm has been by his side ever since. You were a blessing when we needed it most, thank you. Thanks to the community for their support of the Red Kettle Drive for the Salvation Army! Whether you dropped coins in the kettle or volunteered to ring the bell, you made a positive impact on an initiative that helps to provide essential services to those in need!

“Joy to the World” - A large group of home schooled children and their moms came to the GCNH on 12/16/16 to sing Christmas carols! You brought joy to the residents with your radiant voices and smiles. It is ever exciting to see children loving on the forgotten ones!!! Thank you for serving and blessing us all! Merry Christmas! Thank you to Mr. Greene and parent volunteers for giving up their time to put on a free basketball program for the 3rd and 4th graders in LeRoy. It’s a great way for kids to keep active this winter! To Kathy Lutz, Thank you for the heartfelt care you generously give others and wonderful outlook on life. You are an amazing lady! I, unfortunately, have to go to dialysis due to kidney failure. I want to take this opportunity to say how blessed I feel that I can go to Lake Plains Dialysis Center here in the city! The people who work there are very dedicated and treat all of us patients with exceptional care! They do everything in their power to make our time there as good as it can possibly be! I want to take this time to thank them all! Sincerely, Pat Campbell

Call 226-8111, 343-3111, 393-1111 or 637-5100 BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant. A “Normal” person is the sort of person that might be designed by a committee. You know, “Each person puts in a pretty color and it comes out gray.” ~Alan Sherman
