Are you properly insured? Renting an apartment is not like living in an on-campus dorm or in a private residence, where belongings are typically covered by a homeowners insurance policy. Landlord’s insurance only protects the actual property -- not your valuables or the cost of temporary housing -- and it doesn’t protect you in case of a lawsuit. You should investigate rental insurance, which is something that, despite the warnings, 80 percent of college and other renters do not do, according to research.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Making a difference in the lives of many young people, Learning Links of Fairport tutoring program reaches over 54 multi-cultural school-aged kids, three nights per week in The Pines of Perinton, our “Little UN of Perinton.” We have students attending seven Fairport schools in kindergarten-12th grade and coming from countries all over the world and the U.S. Our tutors work 1:1 supporting students on academics in reading, writing, math and sciences, while nurturing character development and community building through study, role modeling and play.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Healthy Bodies Don’t Need Supplements DEAR DR. ROACH: After viewing an infomercial that praised the benefits of probiotics, I would like to know what you think. Probiotics have been prescribed when one is taking antibiotics to replenish the good bacteria that is lost. When taking no medication, I found that when I took one capsule (30 billion live cultures per capsule/10 probiotic strains) on a daily basis, I would get gas and diarrhea; therefore, I stopped taking them. I thought that this was the exact opposite reaction that should have occurred. Please write about the pros and cons and the reasons/necessity for taking probiotics on a daily basis. -- D.A.M. ANSWER: Probiotics are microorganisms, usually bacteria or yeast, that have beneficial properties. There is at least some evidence to support the use of probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), colon inflammation from radiation, irritable bowel syndrome and other diseases of the GI tract. However, with a few exceptions, there is very little evidence that taking anything (prescription or supplement) is of benefit to people who are healthy with no symptoms. Probiotics haven’t been shown to benefit healthy people. Any treatment can have side effects. While there may be some benefits, such as preventing antibioticsassociated diarrhea, I hesitate before recommending any treatment to a healthy, asymptomatic person. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Does high blood pressure cause irregular or abnormal heart rhythms? -- P.K.S. ANSWER: Not usually. In some people with very longstanding high blood pressure, the heart can become dilated -- blown up like a balloon to much more than its normal size. When the heart, particularly the atria (the top chambers), becomes dilated like that, it makes atrial fibrillation more likely. High blood pressure is very common. Irregular heartbeats are universal -- we all have some every day. It is human nature to associate one problem with another, since they are both related to the heart. However, it’s more likely that the everyday irregularities you may have had without noticing take on new significance with a diagnosis of high blood pressure. That being said, since it is possible they are related, it’s certainly worth an EKG next time you see your internist or cardiologist to make sure you don’t have a dangerous heart rhythm. Sometimes doctors order 24-hour (or longer) EKGs for use at home, which can be correlated with any symptoms of heart irregularities. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart-rhythm disturbances in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6. Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have lower-back ache and have been seeing a chiropractor, which helps a little. Would yoga help? -- A. ANSWER: Yoga does help many people with back pain, but it’s important to find an instructor with experience with beginners and in using yoga specifically for back pain. Similarly, tai chi and Pilates exercises have been shown to be useful treatments for back pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. W inter is upon us, but the w indow hasn’t closed for homeow ners to keep their heating bills from going through the roof. W hile exploring tactics for cutting energy costs, there might be no more critical consideration than w indow s. A home w ith inefficient w indow s is almost like a home w ith a hole in the w all -- and installing energy-efficient w indow s can shave up to 15 percent off heating and cooling bills, according to estimates based on data set forth in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Star Savings Estimates (w w w.energystar.gov/w indow s). Numerous factors determine a w indow ’s energy effic ienc y. W indow s w ith a low er “ U-Factor,” for example, are preferable in colder regions because they allow less heat to escape. Here are some other tips to find the best w indow s for your home: • Consider your conservation goals. One homeow ner may simply w ant greater energy efficiency. Another may be draw n to “ passive” or “ net zero” building practices -w hose requirements are designed to maintain comfortable temperatures w ith incredibly minimal heating and cooling systems. • Don’t sacrifice beauty for efficiency. W indow s should be beautiful, functional, durable and energy efficient. • Add w indow treatments. Certain w indow treatments also can help maintain comfortable temperatures in a home. • Consult an expert. Homeow ners should speak w ith a professional w hen selecting w indow s, to explore and identify solutions for their home and climate.

That m eans a $2,000 garage door investm ent could increase the sale value of your hom e by as m uch as $8,000 if you’re selling a $200,000 hom e. The m ost stunning doors integrate w ith the design of the hom e. Look for colors, lines and shapes that m atch other exterior com ponents. The styles of today’s garage doors have advanced far beyond the all-too-com m on row s of rectangles. New doors also feature appealing designs, striking colors, rich finishes and decorative w indow options that can flatter any hom e. One w ord of caution. Don’t try to install a garage door yourself. A garage door system is under high tension that can cause severe injury or even death if im properly installed. Plus, an experienced installer know s how to install the door for correct balance, m axim um energy efficiency, sm ooth operation, low noise and longest life.

While you’re setting goals for the new year, consider adding updating the look of your hom e to your list. If your w alls are looking a little dated, follow these suggestions to give your space a renew ed look. The bedroom is one of the m ost im portant room s in your hom e, and it deserves a fresh look this year. Pair a subtle neutral shade w ith brights and w hites for a balanced design, and snooze in style w ith quaint and quiet color. To com plete the look, give your bed a fresh update w ith a new pintuck duvet cover. Accessorize w ith decorative pillow s, curtains or rugs. Why not dial up the color in your living room ? This area of your hom e accom m odates m any visitors throughout the year and is likely w here your fam ily spends a great deal of your tim e. To create an inviting space, try a robust color like teal. When m atched w ith natural w ood finishes, organic shapes and soft, sophisticated tones, this color allow s you to live a little but still m aintains a dow n-to-earth feel. If your eat-in kitchen or dining room could use a taste of color try a rich red w ith attitude, this hue adds a fun, young flavor to any room . Use it liberally, but achieve balance by using a contrasting color w ith just as m uch abandon. Darker accent pieces, such as a hutch or buffet, as w ell as w hite cabinets, are great com plem ents. Even the m ost casual half-bath can take on a sophisticated feel w ith the right w all color and accessories. A chic look starts w ith blue on the w alls and repeated in key accessories like area rugs or hand tow els. Finish the room by adding a new m irror to open up your space and other storage, such as open shelving, to m inim ize counter clutter. If you’re in need of a quick overhaul of your hom e office, go for a confident, intense, strong, deep blue. Com bine w ith a single com plem entary hue in com fortable furnishings and accessories.

Scrapbooks can help document your year Many interesting and special events take place during the course of a typical year. While the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Rather than relegate birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and other such yearly events to the black hole of cyberspace, crafty men, women and children may want to display them in more prominent ways. Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can help people document various events over the course of the year. But scrapbooking can be much more than that as well. Scrapbooks can serve as valuable resources that speak to the way life once was. Such traditions are not new. Books highlighting family memorabilia, such as recipes, poems, letters, and illustrations, were popular in England as early as the 15th century. Even school yearbooks are a type of scrapbook, highlighting students and events in a single convenient book. The reasons for scrapbooking are the same today as they once were. Scrapbooks preserve memories, record family stories and pass down information through generations. Scrapbooks can even be customized in any manner their creators desire. For those who have resolved to devote more time to documenting happy times and special events in the year ahead, scrapbooking is a great way to do just that. Here’s how to make the process creative and successful. • Devote a box to “scraps.” At the beginning of the year, set aside a medium-sized box, such as a shoebox, that can store various items you want to include in your scrapbook. These may include ticket stubs, receipts, brochures from trips, or any other items you deem worth saving. Receiving a diploma is something to take seriously, even for those students w ho are somew hat older than their fellow graduates. In 2003, Gustava Bennett Burrus graduated from Richmond High School outside of San Fransisco, Calif., at the age of 97. Ruth Hayes Green graduated from the Adult High School of the Perth Amboy, New Jersey Adult Education Center in 2010 at age 98. In 2013, 106-year-old Fred Butler, a student at Beverly High School in M assachusetts, received his high school diploma. He broke the Guinness World Record for oldest graduate previously held by Allan Stew art of Australia, w ho received a Bachelor of Law s degree at age 91 from the University of New England, New South Wales, Australia.

Showcase the special memories of the year ahead by starting a scrapbook.

• Make time to scrapbook. Set aside a few days each month to go through collected items and organize them so you have an idea of what will be included on your pages. Every event may not make the final cut, but that’s up to you. • Indulge in some craft-store shopping. Not everyone has the time to design each scrapbook page from scratch. Fortunately, there are numerous pre-designed templates or slip-in pages that require little work on the part of scrapbookers. • Use your own handwriting. Handwritten sentiments can make the scrapbook even more meaningful. • Don’t overload with photos. Let one or two photos on a page best convey the emotions and stories. Create balance with white space, text and other accents. • Categorize your photos. Disorganized photos can make scrapbook creation more challenging and ultimately frustrating. Organize your photos by month and rely on cloud-based photo storage systems to keep them safe. Then, when you need them, you can print only those images you want to include in your book. • Have fun with the process. You have the entire year to create a beautiful scrapbook. Take your time and experiment with different ideas.

Recent research has acknowledged the significant benefits that board games have, not only on children’s cognitive development and their brain’s motor functions, but also on important life skills such as patience, cooperation, concentration, teamwork and perseverance. “We find that game play enhances many cognitive functions, including visual discrimination, visual span, visual processing speed, visual-motor integration and visual sustained attention,” says Jason Pine, president and founder of the national after-school program Sharp as a Tack. “It is astounding how much progress each student makes in terms of cognitive processing speed in just one session! “Happy Holiday” (sometimes performed as “Happy Holidays”) is a popular song composed by Irving Berlin during 1941 and published the following year ... LONG before all this political correctness started! It was introduced by Bing Crosby in the 1942 film “Holiday Inn.” Commonly regarded as a Christmas song, it was performed on New Year’s Eve in the film and expressed a wish for the listener to enjoy “happy holidays” throughout the entire year. The song helped to popularize the phrase “Happy holidays” as a common greeting during the Christmas and holiday season in the United States. I used to look forward to my husband belting out “Happy Holidays” (the only 2 words he would sing) in his deep voice every year until he passed in 2012. BTW, I also say Merry Christmas!

I live in a very nice neighborhood, many professionals, families, and retirees. Unfortunately, on trash day when there are high winds forecast (there are four different trash companies servicing the neighborhood, each with a different pick-up day) many residents just place the recyclables on the curb the night before. Due to the prevailing winds, the blowing trash that does not get caught on neighbors’ fences ends up at the entrance of the neighborhood, creating a ‘royal’ mess. Please, if you must put the trash out early, secure it; put the heavy glass on top or find another solution. Please be environmentally responsible and stop making the neighborhood the town dump.

To the coyote hunters who use dogs and drive white trucks: I know your dogs can’t read a posted sign. But that does not give you the right to disobey the signs unless you don’t care. Answering Questions About Continuing Education Adults go back to school for a variety of reasons. They may have personal accomplishment goals or their motivation could be purely financial. Unemployment has recently led many individuals back to the classroom. Many colleges and universities report that re-entry or adult students are the new majority on campus. Adults ages 25 to 69 are increasingly enrolling in courses around the country. Going back to school is a serious undertaking. Not only is it an investment of time, but it is also an investment of money. For those thinking about going back to school, consider these questions. 1. Is now the right time? Those going back to school because they think it might provide better job prospects or yield higher salaries could be mistaken. Many employers are cutting continuing-education grants and scaling back on hires with advanced degrees. That’s because companies are feeling the heat of the recession as well. Advanced degrees generally mean having to pay an employee a higher salary, something many companies are not in a position to do right now. Therefore, an advanced degree might prove a hindrance in today’s job market and not become the financial windfall some students expect. If this is the case, delaying an advanced degree for a few years may be a more financially sound idea. 2. What are your goals? Individuals need to examine their long- and short-term goals regarding education. Goals should include whether time is available to complete the degree. Some degrees can take months or years to finish, depending on how many credits a person already has. Is the goal to receive a completely different degree and begin a new career? If so, adults should put it down on paper so they have a definite goal in sight. 3. Are the finances available? Attending school is no small undertaking. Whether a public, private or online school, tuition can cost several thousand dollars per year. Tests taken to be accepted to school can cost money, and books will be needed for coursework. If money is tight right now, continuing school may not be the best option, especially if high-interest loans are the only viable means to continuing education. However, if the finances are there and school won’t detract from other bills, then school might be the right choice. 4. What is the right school? Those who have a full-time job can look into a school that offers evening or weekend classes. Many schools now offer online courses that allow individuals to take classes remotely. There is a growing interest in schools that specifically specialize in online degrees. Such schools enable students to take classes on their own time and complete assignments in a manner that’s less time-specific. Continuing students who may not have a spouse or children can move around to the school of choice. Once again, finances figure to play a major role when deciding on a school. 5. Is a college degree really necessary? For many, continuing education doesn’t mean heading to a college campus. It can involve taking certificate programs and vocational training.
