Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hello, my name is GELATO, like the ice cream. I am 11⁄2 years old and love everybody. My Mommy takes me out in my stroller in the summer and all the neighbors come out to see me. Some people think I am a stuffed animal and I am very cuddly. I am a Cavapoochon which is a King Charles Cavalier, Poodle and Bichon. If my Mommy sneezes, I jump on her lap and give her a kiss... that’s my way of saying, “God Bless You.” Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS. On February 16, a snowstorm made roads icy and difficult to travel. On my way back home from a doctor’s appointment, I was unable to stop my car at the railroad crossing and slid into a snowdrift. My car was very close to the crossing gate. When the gates came down, they hit my car and went back up. I could not move the car forward or back. The Corfu Police responded when I called 911. Friends and neighbors on Snipery Road came to help. Within an hour, my car was pushed out of the snow and I was safe at home. Thank you to everyone who came to help, especially my neighbor Adam who was the first to come to my aid and my daughter Rachel who tried her best to shovel me out. Hocus-Focus 1. Box flap is missing. 2. Slice of bread is smaller. 3. Jar cap is missing. 4. Slingshot is missing. 5. Boy’s cap is missing. 6. Arm is moved.
This is the story of the connection between me and a beautiful bay colt that I fell in love with and raised. Partner was born on March 16, 1991, with a large white blaze shaped like a backward question mark on his forehead. When he was a weanling, we purchased a little black colt so he would have a playmate to grow up with. Every day I would go to the stable on my lunch hour and hand feed him to be sure he would grow up big and strong and to make an everlasting bond between us. When he became a yearling and was turned out in a pasture The author and Partner, in happier times at a nearby farm, I went every day and brought him and his friend carrots. No matter where he was way out in went to my Facebook page and saw a video of the field, when I called out “Partner” he would come someone leading my former horse down the aisle of a killer pen in PA with this caption: “Hia running to the fence. That fall he went into training with my Partner, 24 years-old, needs donations to save him husband to become a race horse. My family had from being slaughtered.” I felt sick, wondering always been in the horse racing business, but I had where he had been all these years and why anyone never really learned how to harness them. Now that would mistreat this gentle, innocent animal. Tears I had my own horse that I trusted completely, I ran down my face as I messaged a girl I had just wanted to be his handler at the track. I learned how met who founded ROC Standardbred to find to harness him and went to the tracks with him “after racing” homes for Standardbreds. She when he raced. Unfortunately, after several years of immediately went into action, along with racing he broke a coffin bone in a race. This is a very LifeHorse, soliciting money to bail Partner out of serious injury that requires at least a year’s stall rest the pen. I also posted on my Facebook page that to heal; even then there is no guarantee of a return help was needed. The next morning I received a call telling me to racing. Since we do not own a farm of our own and that enough money had been raised and Hia stabling space was limited, my husband made the Partner was on his way to Breezy Hill Stables in business decision to sell Partner. I was heartbroken Maryland. I was told a dear friend of mine put up and couldn’t even go to the stable to say goodbye to all of the remaining money to save him. Since then, I have seen pictures of Partner at him. I’m sure he was confused as to why I left him, but I never forgot him and kept his picture on the the rescue stable and was happy to see he was with wall (where it still is today). Time passed and a another black horse like the one he originally grew fellow horseman at the track told us that Partner up with. Life takes strange turns, sometimes good had a good home. This made me very happy. and sometimes bad. I hope Partner gets to live However, a year or so later he told us that Partner peacefully the rest of his life, and if he is anywhere had died after a fencing accident. As years went by, nearby I would love to visit him one more time. I whenever horse stories were discussed I always wonder what he would say to me if he could talk, but I know I would say to him “I am so sorry that talked about my deceased friend. Imagine my complete shock when I recently I couldn’t protect you from such a terrible life.”

Being a good defensive driver means being fully aware of your surroundings, including road conditions and other drivers. Heightened awareness means you are better able to react when the need arises, making you better prepared to prevent accidents and injuries.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is Prostate to Blame for Sluggish Bladder? DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion on enlarged prostate. My primary-care doctor sent me for a blood test and said my PSA number was too high, then sent me to a urologist. He said my bladder is not emptying and that I am having urine retention in the bladder. After one week of medication (Rapaflo), I had a catheter inserted for another week. He measured the urine in the bladder, and it was 880 ml. Now he is suggesting surgery. Is he going too fast? What are your thoughts on the procedure and side effects? Will this correct the problem? -- D.G. ANSWER: The bladder is drained via a tube called the urethra, and in men, the urethra runs right through the middle of the prostate. As men get older, the prostate commonly enlarges, and this can cause resistance to flow. The symptoms can range from mildly annoying to complete obstruction. Complete obstruction is an emergency, since the kidneys will fail within a few days of being unable to drain urine at all. But the obstruction does not need to be complete in order to cause kidney damage. It’s the high pressure in the urethra, bladder and ureters (the tubes that allow urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder) that causes kidney damage. Placing a catheter allows the urine to drain at low pressure if the problem is in the urethra. Normal bladder capacity is between 300-400 ml. At 880 ml, you would experience very abnormal bladder drainage and would be at high risk for ongoing kidney damage. Thus, I completely agree with your urologist that something, probably surgical, needs to be done quickly. It’s not completely clear to me whether your inability to drain the bladder is due to obstruction from enlarged prostate, even though an elevated PSA suggests that this might be the case. It also is possible that there is something wrong with the nerves that go to or from the bladder. I suspect your urologist has done additional bladder tests to help sort this out.

The booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement as well as cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have weaned off Zoloft, and I noticed a swelling of my fingers -- I can’t get my rings on. Do you think it is related? -- E.P. ANSWER: Discontinuing an antidepressant such as sertraline (Zoloft) certainly can cause symptoms. Dizziness, fatigue, muscle aches, anxiety and irritability are common. It happens more frequently if the drug is suddenly stopped versus tapered down over weeks. Paroxitine (Paxil) seems to have the highest incidence of symptoms on stopping. However, I haven’t seen swelling as a result of stopping sertraline. It may be related, but I doubt it. Is it possible that you are consuming more salt? That’s the most common reason for increased fluid in the fingers over a short time. I would see your doctor if it doesn’t go away in a week or so. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Eating right can improve quality of life Legend states that on April 2, 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León was the first European to discover modern-day Florida when he traveled on a quest for the mythical “Fountain of Youth.” While modern science has proven that there is no mystical fountain or body of water that can reverse or slow down the aging process, there are many steps people can take to age well and prolong their lives. Eating the right foods is one way to age well. According to Ralph Felder, M.D., Ph.D., coauthor of “The Bonus Years Diet,” reversing the aging process internally is more difficult than outward cosmetic changes. But the right foods can go a long way toward increasing both life expectancy and quality of life. Those who want to employ diet to increase their life expectancy may want to start adding more of the following foods to their breakfast, lunch and dinner plates. · Broccoli, grapes and salad: According to Health magazine, researchers have found that compounds in these three foods boast extra life-extending benefits. · Berries: In addition to their abundance of antioxidants, berries have other benefits. A 2012 study from Harvard University found that at least one serving of blueberries or two servings of strawberries each week may reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults. · Fruits and vegetables: Produce is good for the body because it’s low in calories and high in fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. Numerous studies have indicated that diets plentiful in fruits and vegetables help people maintain a MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On March 17, 1901, paintings by Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh are shown in Paris, causing a sensation across the art world. healthy weight and protect against cardiovascular disease. · Whole grains: Whole grains pack a lot of nutrition into a low-calorie food. Whole grains help protect against type 2 diabetes, and researchers at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center found study participants whose diets included plenty of whole grains and fruit cut their heart disease risk by almost half compared to those whose diets favored meat and fatty foods. · Red wine: A glass a day for women and no more than two glasses daily for men can be beneficial. Moderate consumption of red wine has been shown to slow age-related declines in cardiovascular function, according to the American Heart Association. · Fiber: Increase your fiber intake for a longer life. Research from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that the more fiber you include in your diet, the lower your risk of coronary heart disease. The daily recommendation is 25 to 35 grams. While there may be no such thing as the fountain of youth, a healthy diet can help men and women prolong their lives.

HOW TO DONATE ITEM S INSTEAD OF CASH Carefully examine items before donating them. Items that have seen far better days likely w on’t have much value to charitable organizations. Once such items are donated, the charity must then make an effort to dispose of them. That can cost the charity time and money, neither of w hich charities have in abundance. Before donating noncash items, examine them carefully to make sure they’re items the charity can make use of or sell. New or unused items w ill likely pass the test, as w ill items w ith very little w ear and tear. But an armchair that’s show ing its age or an old w ashing machine that barely w orks likely w on’t prove too valuable to the charity. But that does not mean such items have zero value.

Board Games Recent research has acknowledged the significant benefits that board games have, not only on children’s cognitive development and their brain’s motor functions, but also on important life skills such as patience, cooperation, concentration, teamwork and perseverance. “We find that game play enhances many cognitive functions, including visual discrimination, visual span, visual processing speed, visual-motor integration and visual sustained attention,” says Jason Pine, president and founder of the national after-school program Sharp as a Tack. “It is astounding how much progress each student makes in terms of cognitive processing speed in just one session! You can see the transformation in their eyes and body language.”

Celebrating our 49th anniversary
Fun, Family Event At-home entertaining can be fun and easy when you pick a theme everyone will love. Movies transcend many generations, and can prove the ideal backdrop for a special night under the stars with friends and family. Host a movie night in the backyard. All that’s needed is some equipment (which may be rented or borrowed from someone with access to AV equipment), a movie of choice and some tasty refreshments. A movie can be streamed from a laptop computer with the help of a projector and displayed on a garage wall or even a sheet serving as a screen. Encourage guests to bring their own lawn chairs or set up blankets right on the grass. Popcorn and movies are the perfect pairing. Rent a popcorn machine that can be plugged in right in the backyard, so guests can serve themselves piping-hot popcorn. Or pop plenty of microwave popcorn indoors and package it in paper bags that guests can hold individually. Keep cans or bottles of soft drinks in a cooler filled with ice. Schedule an intermission during the movie so that filmgoers can get up and help themselves to a drink or visit the restroom. Other snacks to have on hand include typical movie theater fare: nachos and cheese, boxed candies, such as “Snow Caps” or “Ike & Mike” brands, licorice, cotton candy, etc. For those looking to offer a more extensive refreshment spread, finger sandwiches or chicken nuggets and dipping sauces are foods to enjoy. Make sure the movie is rated for all in the viewing audience and in case neighbors with young children are also able to get a peek of the display. External speakers hooked up to the computer can help amplify the sound. DE108680

2-17 was Random Act of Kindness Day. I didn’t know. Thank you, Mr. Phone Serviceman for helping me get to the end of my driveway on Wednesday 217. I was shoveling; you came to fix a phone in house. Then came out, picked up a shovel and helped me get to the road in the last 1/3 of driveway. We talked and shoveled together. You made my day proving that chivalry is NOT dead. Thank you far more than you will know.

They give a sense of security to those who have to call 911 in the night for help, knowing that they will be at your home in a very short time, assisting you during some medical crisis. Thank you all! The Italian Red Head and family in Hamlin
As of late, paramedics and volunteers/ the ambulance, have been called to our home for our son who had back surgery. Every one of these individuals are WONDERFUL and special people who go out of their way to respond to the needs of others. My family and I are truly appreciative of them, and can’t thank them enough. I would like to give a HUGE thank you to the guy in the tow truck who saw me stuck on Bright/ Hen TL road during that snow storm on Tuesday and stopped to pull out my tractor trailer! Also, to all the police, ambulance, fire department, tow companies and state/local plow companies who took the time to help everyone that day. THANK YOU! I want to thank Kirstin Flass and the staff at the Rush Library for all they do to make the library such an inviting place. The fireplace, sitting area, artwork and whimsical “Yarnstorming” pieces are just a few examples.

found! My neighbor and I are disabled and as our neighbors helped each other dig out, they left us snowed in. No emergency personnel could have made it to our house if we needed help. So where were these fine, good Samaritans????
Yes, the ambulance is there for medical purposes and not personal use. The reason for the ambulance to be taken on a “food run” is because if they receive an emergency call, they will immediately have access to the ambulance. If their “own transportation” is used, this will delay the emergency more. That being said, these volunteers have the right to eat a lunch or pick up food, don’t you eat? These volunteers you are complaining about, save lives on a daily basis. Give them a break! I find it funny that on the news the day following the big snow storm (2-1516) they showed how wonderful people are in (local town) helping each other out. Where were people like that in my neighborhood in (local town)? Nowhere to be
Please, if you see a tow truck, police car, fire truck, ambulance, or highway truck with its lights flashing, MOVE OVER or slow down. Give us room to work on the highway. There are too many close calls. Every six days a Tow truck operator is hit or even killed, due to motorists not moving over or slowing down. We are begging you - PLEASE GIVE US ROOM TO WORK. We don’t speed past your office, so don’t speed past ours. We have family, too, that we would like to go home to. (Editor’s note, It’s the law) Just think before you go vote on Election Day. If you’re going to vote for free education (higher taxes) remember this country has had “free education” for many years it’s called the GI bill. Remember everything has a price including FREEDOM. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
