FACTS ABOUT FEBRUARY Despite being the shortest month of the calendar year, February has an interesting history. Early calendars marked the start of the new year in March, but when the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, rose to the throne in 713 BC, he synchronized the calendar to the lunar year. That required the addition of January and February.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fructose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

Making Spirits Bright & The Goodness Initiative by Amanda Dudek
I
t all started with a dream of bringing Christmas to families in need. Making Spirits Bright, the gift-giving organization birthed from this dream in March 2014, took its inspiration from a friend and cofounder, said Making Spirits Bright and The Goodness Initiative Founder, Jamie Buss. “My friend, who was unable to continue with the organization, read a news story about this gentleman who threw a Christmas party every year at a local women’s shelter in Syracuse and gave gifts to the women and their children. It inspired us.” Jamie explained that she and her friend took this idea, adapted it and embellished it, making it their own. “It snowballed from there. The first year, we helped 13 families, the second 41, the third 51 and this past year, we helped 52 families.” Participating families, which are selected with the help of social workers, school administrators and mental health staff and others, are equally divided between the Webster and Rochester areas. Each family member requests four items they need and three items they want. Need items include such things as warm winter clothing like hats, coats, boots, hygiene products, toilet paper, toothpaste, bedding, necessities for the home. Want items are things like toys, watches, perfume, robes, small appliances. “A lot of our families reach out for furniture,” said Buss. “One of our families had no furniture in their home for the past three years, so we reached out to the community for gently used furniture, including beds, chairs, a table, a sofa. The family received furniture that year. Our community is so generous.” In 2018, Making Spirits Bright hit its stride. “Last year, we ‘arrived’ within the Webster community; police, FD, ambulance were all involved, and our reach extended a lot further,” said Buss. “Businesses and families as well as community members adopt families and fill their Christmas lists. 30 families were adopted outright. The remaining families and individuals are placed onto our Community List so that people can adopt a family, a person or purchase an individual item for someone on the list.” Buss explains that all of the gifts are dropped off at her own home and the home of one of the other group members. Afterwards, the group holds a community wrapping party. Last year, they wrapped an astounding 1,6001,700 gifts. “We brought them to one of the local schools, invited the community to join in and wrapped them in the span of two hours,” said Buss, stating that the gifts are then delivered the following week.
Even with so much good already The Goodness Initiative Leaders (L-R) being done, leaders Jeanette Wittmeyer, Colleen Bedford and Jamie Buss Jamie Buss, Colleen Bedford and Jeanette Wittmeyer have an even greater vision in mind. “Last year we applied for nonprofit status under the name The Goodness Initiative,” said Buss. “We all have kids, and we feel that, aside from religious youth groups and school projects, there are not many great ways for kids to get involved with giving back to their communities. So, we founded the Youth Volunteer Network.” Buss describes this network as very youth-led. She explains that, while there are adult supervisors for support, direction
Making Spirits Bright Wrapping Party
and assistance as needed, it is the youth that decide what the projects are, the steps they must take to meet the needs they see and how to gain the support and resources they need. Buss states that kids build a variety of skills: social, leadership, financial literacy, teamwork. They also develop a sense of civic responsibility and a habit of giving back to their community. These skills and qualities are useful in college, in the community and in the workplace. This year, the Youth Volunteer Network (YVN) will take flight. “Each of us three leaders will head up a YVN group,” stated Buss. “Each group will include teens and preteens. We will help them get things going and give them a list of resources. Then, it’s up to them to take true ownership of what they are doing. So many decisions are made for them, but not here. We provide the template, but they are responsible to build on it. Successes and setbacks, they are always learning.” Buss explained that even though this network is youth-led, they are hoping to provide access to families so that they will join, contribute and become involved. “Today’s society is increasingly busy, and this busyness can be a detriment to engaging our kids,” said Buss. “The YVN will take a lot of hard work. Commitment from families, whether once a week or once a month, will help kids see its value. Let’s keep these kids engaged, not push them aside. We so often have to say ‘no,’ to them; let’s find a way to say, ‘yes.’” Much like their spirits, the future looks bright. “We hope to develop into the kind of nonprofit in which every community member is able to give what they can when they can,” said Buss. “We have reached a pivotal moment in our history. Our Making Spirits Bright Program has grown every year, and now we need more space to store our gifts and build on what we have. We would also like to start a backpack program, gathering school supplies for children in need. We plan to invest in YVN, reaching the younger generation and changing one kid at a time.” Buss also sees a future beyond their own borders. “All we are doing is providing a template,” she added. “We hope that other people just take off with this concept and run with it.”

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 63-year-old man. A visit to my urologist did not answer some questions I have. I was told by my regular doctor that aging is a factor in men losing leg hair. Is that true? I am losing pubic hair, and even hair up to the navel. Why is that? Years ago, I found that I had lost the hair between my legs. A medication I was prescribed (Lexapro/Celexa) had bad side effects for me. It caused sexual problems and the loss of perineum hair. Could there be a connection? It is funny that I have only slight chest hair reduction and little back hair loss. Maybe the urologist brushed me off, but it is important to me. I had been under a lot of stress during the summer. -- T.K. ANSWER: When I see leg hair being lost, the first thing I worry about is the circulation in the legs. This can be an early sign of peripheral vascular disease, which is important to recognize because it is treatable and also predicts greater risk of heart attack and stroke. If you have any risk factors for vascular disease, I would talk to your doctor about getting this tested, which is easy and noninvasive. However, the loss of pubic hair makes me concerned about a drop in testosterone. This can cause sexual troubles as well, but it sounds like your sexual issues were related to the medication, which is not uncommon with both Lexapro and Celexa. That’s a simple blood test. Severe stress can rarely cause loss of all body hair, alopecia universalis, but that is really ALL hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes, which is not what you have.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old female, and I bruise from the slightest tap on my skin. My skin is very thin. When you press too hard on my arm or leg, it hurts. I have seen vascular specialists, but I have been told it is because of my thin skin. I feel like I should live in a bubble. My doctor says the same thing as the specialists. Do you have any suggestions to make my veins stronger? I am taking vitamin C, as I read that this might help. -- J.C. ANSWER: Easy bruising is a common problem in the elderly, and although it sometimes is an indication of serious disease, most of the time it is benign. I begin to worry when I see bleeding from the gums or nose, with multiple large bruises with no trauma, or in people with a family history of bleeding. Some simple laboratory tests can help decide whether this is likely a sign of internal disease. In the majority of cases, with none of the worry signs above, people can be reassured. Vitamin C and vitamin K deficiency can cause easy bruising, so foods high in these nutrients or a supplement can be tried. I recommend getting these through food rather than supplements, if possible. A few years ago, a study showed that a bioflavonoid supplement helped with easy bruising, and most pharmacies and health-food stores carry bioflavonoid supplements if diet is inadequate. Many fruits and vegetables are high in these compounds, especially citrus fruits, legumes, hot peppers and onions. These certainly can’t hurt, and may help. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

TOP TIPS FOR BUYING SAFE TOYS by Joan Lawrence (NAPSI)—For happier holidays with your family, here are answers to parents’ most frequently asked questions about toy safety: Q. How do I pick out safe toys? A. Choose a toy that matches your child’s age and interests. Always follow the age grading on toy packaging and be sure to keep toys labeled 3+ away from children under 3. These toys may contain small parts, which are a choking hazard. Q. Are certain toy brands safer than others? A. All toys sold in the U.S. must comply with strict federal safety standards. So when you shop at a reputable retailer, you can feel confident that the toys sold in the establishment are safe. Q. Is it safe to buy a toy from a seller I’m not familiar with? A. Whether online or in person, shop only at retailers you know and trust. Store staff at established businesses will be knowledgeable about the toys on their shelves and websites. Exercise caution when buying toys at flea markets, garage sales and unknown online sellers, as these vendors may not be monitoring for recalled products. Q. How do I find out if a toy has been recalled? A. Only 0.003 percent of the 3 billion toys sold each year are recalled. Stay informed by visiting PlaySafe.org for a current list of recalled products. Q. What’s your last piece of advice for parents? A. Always supervise your children at play and demonstrate the correct way to use a toy or game. For more tips on toy safety, visit www.PlaySafe.org, now available in English and Spanish. • Ms. Lawrence, the “Toy Safety Mom,” is a lifelong child safety advocate with more than 20 years of experience in the toy industry and senior vice president of standards and regulatory affairs at The Toy Association.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try to say as little as possible about the work you’re doing through the end of the month. Then you can make your announcement and accept your welldeserved plaudits. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You face a more difficult challenge than you expected. But with that strong Taurean determination, you should be able to deal with it successfully by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Before you act on your “feelings” about that upcoming decision, it might be wise to do a little fact-checking first. You could be very much surprised by what you don’t find. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A recent workplace success can open some doors that were previously closed to you. On a personal level, expect to receive some important news from a longtime friend and colleague. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Put your wounded pride aside and do what you must to heal that misunderstanding before it takes a potentially irreversible turn and leaves you regretting the loss of a good friend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) One way to kick a less-than-active social life into high gear or rebuild an outdated contacts list is to throw one of your well-organized get-togethers for friends and associates. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting out of an obligation you didn’t really want to take on can be tricky. An honest explanation of the circumstances can help. Next time, pay more attention to your usually keen instincts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Use your Scorpion logic to push for a no-nonsense approach to a perplexing situation. This could help keep present and potential problems from creating more confusion. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A friend’s problem might take more time than you want to give. But staying with it once again proves the depth of your Sagittarian friendship and loyalty. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Sea Goat can benefit from an extra dose of self-confidence to unsettle your detractors, giving you the advantage of putting on a strong presentation of your position. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might want to ask a friend or relative for advice on an ongoing personal matter. But be careful not to give away information you might later wish you had kept secret. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the weekend for a creativity break to help restore your spiritual energy. Once that’s done, you’ll be back and more than ready to tackle whatever challenge you need to face. BORN THIS WEEK: You get great joy out of creating beautiful things and sharing them with others who appreciate them. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

To the person who vented about a medical scooter in the road: while the sidewalks may have been plowed, they are also very badly uneven. Cracks, whether from wear or roots can stop mobility equipment abruptly, sending the user over the handlebars.
Often, ramps to get onto and off the sidewalk also have tall lips. People on a fixed income, such as the disabled often are, may not be able to afford reflective vests and lights. Rather than demanding the disabled stay home, why don’t you contact the town for better maintenance and lighting for the sidewalks, and perhaps keep reflective items in your car to give to a disabled person who does not have them? To the person who stole my package the week before Christmas: I waited weeks for that package to arrive with gifts for my loved ones. Because of you I wasn’t prepared for my aunt’s
Christmas party. Karma will catch up with you! I work at a home for homeless veterans in a canal town. I have a 79-year-old veteran who walks up to 12 miles daily. That is not bad for a 79-yearold Vietnam veteran. A local lady walking her dog told this vet he couldn’t walk down her street, near her or even in her area. How could you be so arrogant and unwelcoming to a veteran in your community? This man not only served his country in a bad era but now is told that he is not welcome to walk down your street, as well. Who are you to tell him that? This man is healthy and loves your community, yet this is how you treat your fellow
neighbor? A Veteran? Thank God the community for the most part has been absolutely wonderful to our house because you left a poor impression on his and our staff ’s minds. Thank God the rest of the world isn’t as heartless. It’s so disconcerting to see Christmas trees on the side of the curb within walking distance of a local park where they recycle them for free. Please check your town’s website. There is so little space left in the landfills. My town uses the chips to put on their trails. Some will give you the mulch. At least take off the tinsel and lights so they don’t get put in the landfill with the trees.
Brighter Side Thank you, East Rochester PD! Sunday night, I had to go in to work by 8. I was outside by 6:15 knowing it would be outrageous out. I drive a little Mazda. I managed to bulldoze (in reverse) to the street. However since the sidewalks had been plowed, I got stuck on the packed snow. I saw a police officer exit his SUV and approach. Without hesitation, this man (also without gloves) helped me free my car by giving it a push back in my driveway then taking his steel shovel to break up the packed ice and snow. He had no cause to stop and help but chose to, and it saved me an incredible struggle. Thank you, Officer Bryant Ferry! R.C.
Our Pittsford Seniors program participants collected 100 coats during Monroe County’s “Coats for Seniors” campaign this past December. The coats are sent to area shelters where they are distributed to those in need. Thanks to partnerships with several community groups and organizations - including our seniors! - the Coats for Seniors Campaign has collected and distributed over 10,000 coats during its 15-year history. Love thy neighbors: Many thanks to my “snow removal elves!” My driveway has been cleared every storm, thanks to my caring neighbors and
daughter. Much appreciation to Kati, Rod, Vicky, Steve & April. Their Luck Lady – Kitty It is hard enough to lose a pet. The event is made even more difficult when the decision as to whether or not to euthanize falls on the shoulders of the pet owner. Dr. Carrie DiCarlo at Perry Pet, along with all her staff, should be recognized for their sympathetic and respectful attitudes towards both their patients and their owners, especially at such an emotional time of loss. My family also received written condolences from Roger’s Hair Salon, where another wonderful group of compassionate people work. We are blessed to have such truly caring and compassionate
people in our community. So many people go to work and just “go through the motions.” The people at these two local businesses put their hearts into their work; it is truly appreciated!

Protecting Your Vision From Diabetes (NAPSI)—Diabetes kills more Americans each year than AIDS and breast cancer combined—and can cause serious problems throughout the body. According to the National Eye Institute, eye health, for example, can become critically compromised. Around 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4 percent of the population, are living with diabetes, with about 1.5 million more being diagnosed every year. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater his or her chances are of developing diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the blood vessels in the retina. According to the National Eye Institute, between 40 and 45 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy. While being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle are certainly linked to diabetes, social and environmental factors such as poverty, stress, and lack of safe housing and access to a healthy diet can also compromise your health and ultimately contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, addressing these social determinants of health has become a top priority for Medicaid programs. “We encourage our members with diabetes to have regular eye exams to rule out complications,” said Dr. Andrea Gelzer, senior vice president of medical affairs at AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need. “We educate our members so they understand that living a healthy lifestyle, controlling their blood sugar and having regular eye exams can help save their vision.” Simple steps can help mitigate the effects of diabetes and may potentially delay complications from diabetic eye disease, including controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure, monitoring your cholesterol, seeing your doctor regularly, and having a dilated eye exam at least once per year—or more if recommended by your eye care professional. AmeriHealth Caritas is part of the Independence Health Group in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and one of the nation’s leaders in health care solutions for those most in need. DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Practicing interpersonal skills: All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation.

But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful.
