Leaf pickup will begin Monday, October 21st and run through Friday, December 6th
How To Place Leaves for Pickup
Leaves should be placed close to the edge of the road. ey should not extend onto the road. Leaves should not be placed in ditches or covering storm sewer drains. Doing this will obstruct the storm drains which will increase the risk of flooding. Leaves should be in a long row no farther off the road than 8 feet. Do not mix branches of foreign objects with the leaves. is can cause damage to the machine that picks up the leaves. Refer to brush pickup for branches.
The village has leaves from collections from previous years available. They are excellent for gardens or landscape areas!
Water aerobics: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that waterbased exercises can be especially helpful individuals with chronic diseases, a category many seniors fall into. The CDC notes that one study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that improves the use of joints affected by arthritis without worsening symptoms. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also notes that swimming can lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease. Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a 2011 study published in the peer-reviewed journal the Annual Review of Nutrition, experimental data from animal studies suggests that maternal undernutrition among pregnant women may play a role in preterm birth. The study also reported that a lack of specific nutrients during pregnancy may influence gestation length by increasing the likelihood that a woman will give birth before reaching full-term. Women who are pregnant or hope to become pregnant can speak with their physicians about the role nutrition can play in a healthy, full-term pregnancy.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function.Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls.Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned.Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018.That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

HOW TO DISCUSS A CANCER DIAGNOSIS WITH YOUR EMPLOYER
Be willing to accept help. It’s easy for cancer patients to feel like they’re suddenly seen as charity cases upon sharing their diagnosis with an employer and their colleagues. But offers to help come from a good place, and patients would likely offer to help if the shoe was on the other foot and a colleague revealed a cancer diagnosis. It’s alright to tell people willing to help that you’ll let them know if you need anything if and when a difficult situation arises. In the meantime, thank them for their kindness and prepare to lighten your professional load as treatment begins.

HOW TO HELP PETS IN THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICAN HELENE
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m heartbroken seeing the destruction in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina a er Hurricane Helene. ere must be a lot of lost, hungry and suffering pets. I want to fill my truck and trailer with pet food and drive it to where it’s most needed, but I’m not sure where to go. Do you have any advice? -- Maggie in upstate New York
DEAR MAGGIE: It is heartwarming knowing that you and other pet owners want to do something positive for people and their pets in these areas that have been so hard hit.
As I write this, organizations from across the country are getting in place, setting up in strategic locations so that they can distribute aid, assist with rescues and help recover those lost to this storm. With many major highways cut, travel is nearly impossible in North Carolina, and very difficult elsewhere.
e best thing that you can do right now is to stay put. Instead of driving supplies to disaster areas, start a fundraising drive and donate cash to an organization that is actively helping pets and their owners.

For example, the ASPCA is working with the Humane Society in Charlotte, North Carolina, to evacuate rescue and foster dogs from Asheville and surrounding areas. e Humane Society of the United States is doing likewise. Both organizations are helping owners with pet food and medical care, and providing shelter to animals without families.
Donating to these major organizations, or selecting a local shelter or rescue group in these areas to support now and in the months to come, will help immensely.
Clarification: In a previous column on ticks, it was implied that ticks transmit heartworm. ey do not; however, they can transmit tapeworms.

I called [national fix it company] to repair a washing machine. First they had a tech come out that said we needed to order a part but that we could get it cheaper online. So we ordered it online and called the company to come back. They replaced the part and the machine was working for a short time and then stopped again. They came back again and said the same part was broken but that it wasn’t covered under warranty since we bought it online. So now we have to buy the same part again and it will take 3 weeks for it to arrive. UGH.
Dockworkers Strike
Greed has already begun. If there’s a shortage of items due to the strike, why do businesses get away with raising prices of items already in stock? Businesses already paid for the items that are staged in their stockrooms. A shortage is one thing, but price increases is price gouging.

TURN YOUR YARD INTO A VACATION-WORTHY OASIS
Install a pool: Pools are the ultimate spots to cool off on hot days.An elaborately shaped inground pool can blend in with the landscape and offer the ultimate hang-out zone. However, above-ground pools also serve the purpose and are more budget-friendly. Stock tank pools are popular among those who want minimal pool expenditure or have small spaces to work with. Stock tanks are metal vessels traditionally used as watering holes for livestock. They also can be “adult kiddie pools” when combined with some plumbing.Galvanized steel frames make them sturdy. With floats and other accessories, they can become the perfect oasis.

Endometrial Biopsy Indicated for Woman With Blood in Urine
DEAR DR. ROACH: About three months ago, I bled a bit while urinating. This was the first (and only) time in over 30 years that this happened since I went through menopause. An ultrasound was performed, and they found a mildly thickened endometrium (6.1 mm) with scattered cystic change and without focal lesion.
My gynecologist is suggesting an endometrial biopsy. I am concerned because I have no symptoms other than kidney stones. I’m due to see a urologist, but even with my kidney stones, I have no symptoms. I am 80 and concerned about anesthesia. Should I go ahead with the biopsy? - L.O.
ANSWER: A thickened endometrium is concerning for uterine cancer. The most common symptom of uterine cancer is abnormal uterine bleeding. This usually takes the form of red, pink or brown spotting. However, it sounds like you had blood in your urine, which is more concerning for kidney stones than uterine bleeding.
Your ultrasound is abnormal; 5 mm is the maximum thickness for a normal endometrium. Getting a biopsy is clearly the recommended procedure, as it gives guidance on the next steps. Still, your risk of uterine cancer is small. You do not have to proceed with the biopsy if you do not want to. An endometrial biopsy is an in-office procedure with minimal risk. My textbooks say there is minimal pain, but my patients tell me this isn’t always the case. You don’t have to receive anesthesia; you can take pain medication (such as naproxen), get a local anesthetic, or do both. I’ve had several patients who’ve requested a nerve block and were very happy with their decision. If the biopsy shows cancer of the endometrium, surgery is the preferred treatment, but radiation is also a possibility for some people.

A Century of Adventure:
Grandma Ruth shares her story with a bit of magic
BY SUZIE WELLS
Grandma Ruth Reads: e Day I Was Born is an enchanting children’s book that takes readers on a journey back to the 1920s to celebrate the birth of Grandma Ruth, as told through the eyes of a mystical guardian cat named Luck. Co-authored by lifelong Avon resident, 102-year-old Caroline R. Weden, known as Grandma Ruth, and Pamela D. Bickford, her caregiver, the book offers a touching blend of history, family, and magic. e official release will take place on October 27th at the Avon Preservation & Historical Society, marking the debut of a heartfelt story that brings together generations.
Pamela D. Bickford, a multifaceted writer and caregiver, collaborated with Caroline Weden to share the story of Grandma Ruth’s birth in this beautifully illustrated book. At the heart of the tale is Luck, a guardian feline spirit who watches over Ruth as she enters the world, offering readers a window into a magical time when family bonds and guardian spirits were intertwined. e story resonates with the warmth and values that have shaped generations, and the historical backdrop of the 1920s adds a layer of richness to the narrative.
Pamela reflects on the book’s creation, saying, “We wanted to create a story that celebrates the wonder of life’s beginnings while paying homage to the strong family bonds that carry us through generations.” For Pamela, this debut is not just a children’s book but a tribute to the timeless themes of family, love, and history. “Writing this book with Caroline has been a true labor of love.”
Caroline R. Weden brings over a century of life experience to the book. Having lived through decades of adventure, she adds her unique perspective to the narrative. “ is book reflects a part of my journey, and it’s been a joy to work with Pamela to share the story. Luck was always by my side, and I believe this story will touch families the way it touches ours.” Caroline’s life is one filled with moments that have shaped her into a cherished matriarch, from her years as a Grandparent Teacher Aide to raising five boys who mean the world to her.
e October 27th book release celebration will allow readers to meet the authors, enjoy interactive readings, and take home signed copies of the book. ere will also be family-friendly activities, giving the event a welcoming and celebratory atmosphere. For families looking to share a story filled with warmth and magic, this debut promises to be a memorable experience.
Pamela, who has been Caroline’s caregiver for three years, describes their collaboration as deeply meaningful. “Helping to write this book has brought me joy and a feeling of great accomplishment. To live a fulfilling life, always remember to
pick yourself back up if you fall and pursue your dreams, no matter how old you are,” Caroline says, inspiring so many.
Pamela, a writer, mother, editor, and Reiki Master Teacher, brings her own experiences to the project, blending her skills to create a magical narrative that will resonate with readers of all ages. With this book, she marks the beginning of her journey as a children’s author, sharing her love for storytelling and family with the world.
As for Caroline, at 102 years young, she still draws joy from her past experiences, particularly her time as a Grandparent Teacher Aide, a role she held from 1989 until her retirement at age 93. “ ose years were some of the happiest and most meaningful in my life,” Caroline reflects. Her dedication to her family shines through her words and work, making this book a heartfelt tribute to her life and legacy. She lovingly dedicates it to her five sons, who, as she says, “mean everything to me.”
Grandma Ruth Reads: e Day I Was Born offers readers a chance to step into a magical world where history, family, and fantasy come together. Both Pamela and Caroline hope that this story will touch readers’ hearts and inspire them to cherish the bonds that connect us all across generations. Caroline says, “ e secret to getting old is to keep moving!”

• Wash hands. First and foremost, it is crucial to wash your hands before and after using the car.
• Use rubbing alcohol. Solutions that contain 70 percent alcohol are effective against many viruses and bacteria. Nearly every interior surface of a vehicle can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol.
• Avoid bleach or hydrogen peroxide. They are likely to damage a car’s upholstery.
• Use soap and water: Experts say that vigorous washing with a soapand-water solution can be effective against many contaminants. Friction also can help to break down germ cells during cleaning.

SMART WAYS TO SAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE
(NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to
into your savings account. Saving needs to be a priority—consider it a “need.”
4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you.
5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save.
6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buy through apps, such as ride sharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up. What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount.

Be patient. Patience is a buyer’s ally when shopping for a pre-owned vehicle. Certified pre-owned vehicles at a local dealership have already been vetted and met certain standards to earn that designation, but buyers must do their own vetting when buying from private sellers. That requires patience as buyers peruse vehicle history reports provided by the seller (or gather them on their own) and don’t rush to buy cars that could ultimately prove to be lemons if they’re not vetted properly.

Here’s A Tip
BYLINE: By JoAnn Derson
* “If you have magazines or books that you are finished reading, perhaps you’d consider donating them to local seniors centers. You can look in the yellow pages to see if there are any near you. O en, the seniors are grateful to have new reading material.” -- T.C. in Florida
* Many more of us are using the reusable fabric shopping bags nowadays. A few cities have banned the use of plastic bags for retail shops. ese bags are much better for the environment, and can hold a lot more groceries per bag. One thing many people forget to do is wash them. You can take out the plastic insert (if there is one) and toss them in the washing machine. Hang to dry and you’re carrying around a much cleaner bag!

MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)
Serves 4
1 pound morcilla blood sausage
1 pound mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 cloves garlic, slivered
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons white wine
1 cup shelled spring peas
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint
2 tablespoons mint oil
Mint Oil
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 cup chopped mint
Pinch of salt
Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.
In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil. For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

It is no joy to me to sit On dreamy summer eves, When silently the timid moon Kisses the sleeping leaves, And all things through the fair hush’d earth Love, rest—but nothing grieves. Better I like old autumn With his hair toss’d to and fro, Firm striding o’er the stubble fields
Every blade in the field, every leaf in the forest, lays down its life in its season, as beautifully as it was taken up. It is the pastime of a full quarter of the year. Dead trees, sere leaves, dried grass and herbs—are not these a good part of our life? And what is that pride of our autumnal scenery but the hectic flush, the sallow and cadaverous countenance of vegetation? its painted throes, with the November air for canvas?

HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD
Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB
Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.
