DID YOU KNOW? As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips. While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.” According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

District response from Superintendent: “We have to take a conservative approach.” is doesn’t sound like they are looking to change!

WHAT TO DO BEFORE TRADING IN YOUR CAR

Give the vehicle a thorough inspection. No matter what resources like Kelley Blue Book or NADA suggest, no car is going to get top dollar at trade-in if it doesn’t look good or run smoothly. Address any dings or dents, clean the interior and exterior of the vehicle and take the car to a mechanic to determine if there are any issues that should be addressed to improve trade-in value. Dealerships may want to examine the car prior to making a tradein offer, so the car should be tended to prior to visiting a dealership. In addition, drivers who conduct their own inspections are in better position to negotiate should dealerships point to certain issues with the car.

Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life. Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town.

With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conductedbylawenforcementofficials, whereastaxidriversaresubjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests.

While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Often awe-inspiring, holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides.

Safety should always be a priority when stringing holiday lights both inside and outside a home. The National Fire Protection Association notes that, between 2009 and 2014, fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 210 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors also can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Following some simple safety procedures when decorating with lights can ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season.

Not only can it reach over 100 feet in length and weigh more than 100 tons, but its heart can tip the scale at 1,300 pounds and is the size of a small car, while its arteries are big enough for a full-grown human to swim through -- not that we recommend you go for a swim and attempt it.

Western NY Farmers Lend a Hand to North Carolina in the Aftermath of Hurricane Helene

In the wake of the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene, several farming families from Western New York, all members of the National Hay Association (NHA), came together to support their counterparts in western North Carolina. eir efforts were a shining example of neighborly kindness and the deep-rooted sense of community that binds the agricultural world, even across great distances. e hurricane ravaged farms, destroyed barns and winter feedsupplies, andle manyfarmersindireneedofassistancetosustain their animals and operations through the coming winter.

One of the key players in this local relief effort was Cosmos Fitzpatrick of Aden Brook Hay, who generously provided a truck, a driver, and the necessary fuel for the journey. is enabled the transport of a full trailer load of hay donated by various local farming families, includingNeenanFarmsofLima,RogersFarminBloomfield, andKnightFarmsofHoneoye.RichardKnighttooktheleadinloading the hay, working from his barns and those at Randi B Farm, where he helped fill the trailer with large square bales of hay.

clothing, sleeping bags, and tarps. e Rogers children, adding a personal touch to the mission, cra ed 40 handmade cards to send along with the hay to the families in North Carolina. e effort was a multi-faceted response to a complex crisis, with agricultural aid and essential supplies both playing a critical role in helping the devastated communities.

e National Hay Association (NHA) has long been an organization dedicated to more than just the trade of hay. Founded in 1895 by a group of hay dealers and producers, the NHA was established to share information, improve the industry’s ethical standards, and bring structure to an o en-chaotic market. In the 19th century, hay dealers were o en seen as untrustworthy “hay sharks,” and the NHA worked to change this perception by introducing quality standards and arbitration systems that helped settle disputes without the need for legal action. e motto of the NHA, “Not for self but for all,” reflects this commitment to ethical business practices and mutual support.

e organization has also cultivated a strong culture of humanitarian assistance, especially in times of disaster. When word spread of the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene, NHA members from across the United States began mobilizing to send aid to the affected areas. Feed was shipped in to sustain livestock through the winter months, and essential goods were collected and distributed to help the farmers recover. One NHA member from Idaho, with a hay terminal in Florida, was among the first to send relief to North Carolina, including hay and dog food. BenshoterFarmsinsouthernOhiodonatedthreefullloadsofsupplies, including clean-up tools and other necessities.

e Western New York farming community is no stranger to hard work and selflessness. Responding to the North Carolina farmers’ call for help, Barbara Randall brought together local NHA members for this mission. She reached out to Fitzpatrick at Aden Brook Hay, who quickly volunteered to provide the transportation. Randall contacted area farmers to contribute the hay, and in no time, they had a full load ready to go.

Meanwhile, Randall’s neighbor, Stacie Rogers, rallied the local community for additional donations of winter clothing. A er posting the call to action on social media, donations poured in. People contributed sweaters, coats, boots, tarps, and other supplies.

e western New York farmers who participated in this effort represent a cross-section of America’s agricultural backbone. Many of these families have been farming for generations, with multiple members working together to run their operations. ey balance the demands of farming with family life, community involvement, and, in this case, an extraordinary act of kindness for their fellow farmers in need.

As this trailer load of hay and supplies made its way to North Carolina, it carried with it not just the tangible goods necessary for survival, but also the spirit of solidarity that defines the National Hay Association and the farming community at large. When tending to their lawns, homeowners are advised to pay attention to areas that may feature standing water. According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika. Furthermore, mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if gone it goes undiscovered.Standingwateralso can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnantwaterisaprobleminyour yard, remediation is necessary. Directing downspouts away from the house can remediate standing water. Changing the grading of soil so that low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. In addition, homeowners can remove standing water from empty flower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System

When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training.

Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic.

Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

Nutrients: Humus is an organic component of soil that forms when leaves and other plant materials decompose. Organic mulches provide humus and decompose over time, adding nutrients into the soil. The Morton Arboretum recommends that homeowners use organic mulch that was composted or treated prior to application so any weeds, insects or microorganisms are killed.

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE

For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook fromcoldtocozywithafewsimple DIY solutions.

The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can beinadequateinolderhomes.Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners andprofessionalsalikerecommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or adepthof16inches.

Aerial Operators

A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

value: Many homeowners renovate their homes with eyes on improving the resale value of those homes. But if homeowners want to showcase a newly remodeled kitchen when selling their homes, they should be prepared for prospective buyers to ask who worked on the project. Fearing potential problems down the road, some buyers might be put off by homes that were remodeled by DIYers and not professional contractors.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS

Fleas: Fleas are parasitic blood-suckers that reside on the coats of pets. Scratching, hot spots, hair loss, and tapeworms (which are carried by fleas) can be symptomatic of flea infestation. Some people may notice actual fleas on their dogs, while others may identify the flea dirt against a dog’s skin. Flea prevention medicines and medicated shampoos can help keep fleas at bay. I

PAW’S CORNER

STARTING A PET SITTING BUSINESS

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m 16 and love pets -- I have a dog, cat and an iguana already -- and I want to start my own pet sitting business. What is the best way to start? How do I get customers? Do I need a license or something? -- Jeannie H., Pittsburgh

DEAR JEANNIE: Pet sitting can be a great business to get into. Every pet owner needs someone to watch their pet from time to time: long workdays, vacations, illness and so on. However, it’s a business that carries a lot of responsibility. Being reliable is very important and is essential to building your reputation as a sitter that pet owners can trust.

I recommend a trial period first, with a couple of neighbors or your parents’ friends. is will give you an idea of what the job entails, how long it takes to care for each pet, and can open your eyes to opportunities. For example, a neighbor who works from home may not need a sitter, but their dog could use an extra walk in the a ernoon.

At the same time, study up on the requirements for running a business. Entrepreneurship courses are o en available for free through your local library or at the Small Business Association (where you can also find a business mentor).

Most states don’t have a licensing requirement for pet sitters, but you can get a certification through Pet Sitters International (petsit.com), or the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). ese organizations offer a wealth of information -- including how to find clients.

Most of all, have fun! You’re getting into this business because you love pets, and that will be a big factor in your success.

A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

FAST FACTS ABOUT THE SUN

Australia ranks near the top of the skin cancer risk list along with New Zealand. These countries are located close to the ozone layer hole over the Antarctic. In addition, during summer, the Earth’s orbit places Australia closer to the sun compared to other countries. That results in an additional solar UV intensity, according to Specialist Clinics of Australia.

LAST-MINUTE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS

Expect competition. Though online shopping would seemingly make last-minute shoppers relics of a bygone era, that was not really the case in 2022. A survey of more than 1,000 shoppers conducted by the retail industry publisher Best Black Friday found that just about 16 percent of consumers estimated they would finish their shopping during the week of Christmas. Last-minute shoppers who want to avoid crowds should considershoppingduringoff-peakhours,suchasonweekdaymorningsandafternoons when most people are working.

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES

Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

VILLAGE OF GENESEO LEAF PICKUP SCHEDULE

Leaf pickup will begin Monday, October 21st and run through Friday, December 6th

How To Place Leaves for Pickup

Leaves should be placed close to the edge of the road. ey should not extend onto the road. Leaves should not be placed in ditches or covering storm sewer drains. Doing this will obstruct the storm drains which will increase the risk of flooding. Leaves should be in a long row no farther off the road than 8 feet. Do not mix branches of foreign objects with the leaves. is can cause damage to the machine that picks up the leaves. Refer to brush pickup for branches.

The village has leaves from collections from previous years available. They are excellent for gardens or landscape areas!

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

SHOPPING LOCALLY

earned money. Your local merchant is working just as hard to earn your money. And when you choose to not support your local merchant and shop outside your community or county, you’ve robbed yourself of the benefits of your money staying where you live.

THINK LOCAL, especially at this gi ing time of year. Make it a Merry Christmas for all of us because, ‘it matters!’

businesses was more important than getting the best deals. That may be due to the feeling of helping out a fellow neighbor.

Create job opportunities

Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, along with their employees. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. That’s also true in Canada, where 68.8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she - or a relative - will need a job. Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals.

Keep more money in the community

The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. Spend the same $100 at a national retailer and only $14 stays.

Enjoy a more local flavor

National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses may also be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Getting the Job Done, or Not Avon School District Style

is week, the New York State Comptroller’s financial audit of the Avon Central School district dropped and it isn’t pretty (www.osc.ny.gov).

Regardless of how you feel about having been over-charged for your school taxes for at least the last 5 years (the audit only covered the last five years so what happened before is an unknown), numbers are remarkably flexible things and the school board will undoubtedly dra some reasons justifying what happened.

Of somewhat larger concern is the fact that, during that same period, the board didn’t/wouldn’t(?) file the appropriate required reports (according to their own written policy) to provide transparency on the school’s finances and detailing the what & why of their long-term plans for our tax dollars.

Given the team’s 50+ years of local experience, a paid Business Manager, multiple higher-level degrees, and taxpayer funded salaries exceeding $300k (aggregate), not doing what’s required is a little like a surgeon saying “Wait, you want me to wash my hands?”

If the results of this audit don’t sit well with you, consider attending the next School Board meeting (next Monday, November 18th) and voicing your concerns.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Blood Pressure Spikes Could Denote Labile Hypertension

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 85 years old and in good health for my age. I am an active nonsmoker, eat healthy, practice tai chi, and enjoy having many friends. I have no reason to experience extreme anxiety. Yet, for months, I’ve had unexplained blood pressure spikes.

The highest I had was 243/127 mm Hg, and this is when I called local EMTs who took me to the emergency room. I was given meds to lower my blood pressure, two electrocardigorams, and an X-ray. I was discharged after three hours and was told that my heart seemed fine.

I am now taking losartan and propranolol. I tried triamterene after consulting with a cardiologist, but I couldn’t tolerate the side effects. I occasionally use lorazepam.

Today a blood pressure reading showed 197/100 mm Hg. Just the thought of checking my blood pressure spikes the reading. How long can I go on with these blood pressure levels? Can these readings be normal for some people? - S.O.

ANSWER: No, these readings are not normal. Since you s ay that your blood pressure “spikes,” I think you mean that most of the time, your blood pressure is normal.

The biggest concern is a condition where the body intermittently secretes substances that raise the blood pressure. This may be caused by a tumor called a pheochromocytoma. They are exceedingly rare but must be looked for in a case like yours, with sudden and dramatic spikes in your blood pressure. Your regular doctor or cardiologist will know how to look for a pheochromocytoma.

If you have a spike, a blood test will be dramatically elevated for epinephrine and norepinephrine. But if your blood pressure is normal at the time of the visit, a 24-hour urine test is done.

There are other rare causes, including blockages in the arteries to the kidneys and certain drug use, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (very rarely used for depression) in combination with some foods. Cocaine use is another cause in a person on a beta blocker, like the propranolol you are on.

Even more likely is a condition called labile hypertension, where emotional stress leads to an increase in blood pressure levels. This is more likely for you because of the last thing you said: Just the thought of checking your blood pressure may cause it to spike.

Managing labile hypertension should be done by an expert. There are experts in hypertension who know how to manage very unusual cases of hypertension, whether they’re generalists, nephrologists or cardiologists. Your doctor may have already considered this diagnosis because lorazepam is often used for spikes, sometimes in combination with short-acting blood pressure medicines, like labetalol or clonidine.

DID YOU KNOW? The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

How to Navigate Potential Supply Shortages this Holiday Season

• Shop Local. By mid-spring 2022, congestion at ports on the west coast of the United States had lessened significantly. But the same could not be said for ports on the east coast. Many big box retailers rely on imports to fill their shelves, and that could make it hard for such sellers to deliver items in time for the holiday season. Shopping local and buying items directly off the shelf can ensure no one is given an IOU this holiday season.

• Give Gi Cards. If shipping estimates make it unlikely that gi s will arrive on time for the holiday season, pivot to gi cards. Put the amount of money you would have spent on the item on the card instead.

• Ship Directly to Recipients. It might not offer the same heartwarming charm as handing a loved one a gi in person, but shipping gi s directly to their recipients increases the likelihood that the person will receive the gi by Chanukah or Christmas morning. Many online retailers now offer wrapping at additional cost, and shoppers can splurge and have directly shipped gi s wrapped to add a more traditional feel to gi -giving.

• Give Homemade Gi s. Homemade gi s, whether it’s baked goods or cra s, don’t need to be shipped, so there’s no way such items will spend the holiday season sitting on a ship in a congested port. If you choose to make cra s, decide early what you want create so you can secure all of the necessary supplies in plenty of time to deliver the items during Chanukah or on Christmas morning.

DID YOU KNOW?

Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults.

· Assume a seated position and hold the infant facedown on your forearm, which is resting on your thigh.Support the infant’s head and neck with your hand, and place the head lower than the trunk.

· Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand. The combination of gravity and the back blows should release the blocking object. Keep your fingers pointed up to avoid hitting the infant in the back of the head.

· Turn the infant face up on your forearm, resting on your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the infant still isn’t breathing. Using two fingers placed at the center of the infant’s breastbone, give five quick chest compressions. Press down about 11/2 inches, and let the chest rise again in between each compression.

· Repeat the back blows and chest thrusts if breathing doesn’t resume. Call for emergency medical help.

· Begin infant CPR if one of these techniques opens the airway but the infant doesn’t resume breathing.

I live in [local county] and have horses, dogs and cats. Most people are considerate and follow the rules when using the public parks. Last week when riding, a loose dog lunged up, biting me and then biting at my horse. ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE

POSITIONS

THURSDAY, 11/21 FROM 1-4PM

THURSDAY, 12/5 FROM 10AM-1PM

Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change.

Once the idea for a career change has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY

Play by the rules. Your employer may have a plan in place for how the company prefers resignations to be handled. The standard two- to threeweek’s notice is a guideline. Visit with human resources if you need more information, such as whether or not a resignation letter or other documentation is required.

Help Wanted P/T: Support Position

in small, busy doctor’s office in Lakeville, NY. Mon. & Wed. 8am-4pm, Tues. 9am-6pm. Duties include, but are not limited to, escorting patients to rooms, keeping rooms clean and stocked, back up answering phones, and other tasks as needed.

Please send resumes to: bertal@featuredmedia.com

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS

Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements.

Ratherthanstatethatyouwereresponsibleforprovidingcustomerservice, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence.

If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

ROASTED BANANA COFFEE CAKE

Serves 8

8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus 1 tablespoon at room temperature for the pan

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 bananas

3/4 cup chopped pecans

3 tablespoons dark brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

11/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

1/4 cup sour cream

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan with the 1 tablespoon room temperature butteranddustwiththegranulated sugar and tip out any excess. Place the bananas on a small rimmed baking sheet and roast for 15 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.

In a small bowl, combine the pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and nutmeg through a fine-mesh strainer into a medium bowl.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar on low speed until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula, then add the roasted bananas, sour cream and vanilla. Beat until incorporated.

With the mixer running on low speed, spoon in the flour mixture and mix until just combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Sprinkle evenly with the pecan topping. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out cleanwithafewcrumbsattached.

Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
