DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT

Install windows films. Plastic window films are another option for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their windows. Heat shrink film can be cut to fit each individual leaky window in a home and then attached to windows using double-sided tape. A hair dryer can then be used to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Low-emissivity, or Low-E, coatings are a more expensive alternative to heat shrink film, and they can be equally effective at improving energy efficiency. Installation of Low-E coatings can be more difficult, as they do not provide as much leeway for mistakes during application as heat shrink film.

Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees.

Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight.

Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.

Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Somehow my cellphone number ended up on somebody’s list. Now I’m receiving daily text messages saying that my Amazon Prime account is about to be canceled for nonpayment -- unless I immediately click the link and give them my credit card number. Some of the messages say the account has already been canceled but I can get it back by -- you guessed it -- giving them my credit card number within an hour.

I don’t think so.

I’m on a phone list for Net ix as well. I called Net ix and no, my account is not about to be suspended. Said the representative: “You’re on automatic pay. If somehow a payment isn’t made, it’s our fault for not processing it.”

If you’re getting those “you’re late” messages on your cellphone, beware. Don’t accidentally touch the link in the message. It will take you to a website that looks real but is not, and just connecting to it can download a virus on your phone. Back out carefully and delete the text message. Take your time.

Don’t try to contact the scammers to ask to be taken o their list. It only veri es that yours is a good number and it will be sold to others.

WAYLAND CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF THEIR ICONIC WAY OF THE CROSS WALK

Each year since 1973, Christians from Wayland and surrounding areas celebrate Easter by symbolically retracing the steps Jesus took to his cruci xion on Calvary. Midday Good Friday each year, residents meet at the Wayland Town Hall to begin the 2-1/2 mile trek to and then up Selbig Hill, renamed Calvary for the occasion.

Along the way, walkers stop for prayers and hymns at 14 stations, where volunteers read from the liturgy. e pilgrimage ends at the base of a 25-foot-tall I-beam steel cross erected atop the hill in 1974 by John Landino. Typically, a priest will then give a Sermon on the Mount at the hilltop.

Landino, then a village trustee, got the idea for this “Way of the Cross” walk while hiking with his sons to the peak of the hill now called Calvary Hill on County Line Rd., overlooking the community. Landino explains that in about half a mile, the hill rises 500 feet, which makes for quite an incredible sledding hill. While walking it with his kids, though, Landino, a devout Catholic, said he re ected on Christ’s walk to his death.

Landino saw the hill as a challenge for the faithful, and so presented to the Council of Churches the idea of having participants walk up Selbig Hill for such a Cross Walk. One of the priests at the time suggested making it a community walk from the town hall, and

helicopters ying overhead to record the event. Other years, when there’s major rain or other bad weather on Good Friday, only a dozen or so people make it out.

Regardless of the weather, and even at age 84 now, Landino himself makes the walk up the hill each and every year. ey host whomever from the community wants to join them each year (other than 2020 due to COVID). Landino says, “ ere’ve been some faithful who come every single year.”

ere were a few ladies in their late 80s who did the entire walk and were such an inspiration to others, Landino says. One year, a young adult from Rochester came to this event saying it was on her list of things to do and she had such youthful energy, it a was a bit surprising that by the end of the trek, she was utterly exhausted. It’s de nitely an undertaking for those who choose to participate, he says. Hence the varying levels of participation.

Landino nds his Catholic faith inspires him, calling him to do this one thing while he’s alive. “Religion is a tough thing,” he says, “and it’s changed a lot. I feel I’ve been blessed. I like to give back for my Christianity before I die.” He feels this Cross Walk is his way to give back.

Many participants in the early days especially chose to carry their own crosses or cruci xes as evidence of humility, according to reporter Al Wilson. Landino describes those early crosses as

e crosses and the number of participants may have shrunk over the years, but the dedication of faithful participants has not wavered. Landino says he has walked the hill each and every Good Friday for the past y years, and almost every year he has had a community of Christians with him.

In its heyday, this Cross Walk brought hundreds of Christians of all denominations to the unique occasion each year. According to 1975 D&C coverage, “ ose who are able, walk the full distance. Others drive to the 14 stations to meditate, pray, and sing. Others wait at the top of the hill and watch the pilgrims as they make their way up the steep incline to the summit.”

Landino says the Cross Walk is a bit more casual today compared with that in the early years because it is such an undertaking for the faithful, but those who stick with it feel deeply connected to their faith as he does.

1 cup gluten-free flour

1/4 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder

3. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, applesauce, coconut oil, and vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture and mix until smooth. Add the almond milk mixture and continue mixing for 1 minute more. Add half of the crushed cookies and mix until just combined.

4. Scoop the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling threequarters of the way full. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool before frosting.

5. Microwave the uncovered frosting jar for 5-second intervals, stirring in between, until soft. Gently frost the top of each donut. Sprinkle the remaining crushed cookies over the donuts.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE

Rental potential and the local labor force: Location is a significant factor to consider when investing in real estate, but recent shifts in how and where people work could change the real estate investment landscape. A 2020 Gartner, Inc., survey of more than 300 financial executives and leaders in the finance industry found that roughly 25 percent will move at least one out of every five of their on-site workers to permanently remote positions in the years ahead. Economists note that this shift to remote working could be among the more lasting trends to emerge from the pandemic. Before investing in real estate, prospective investors should examine local trends to see if more and more locals are working remotely, and whether or not that’s affecting the market for rentals.

Turkey Roulade with Cranberry Chutney

Serves 6

1 sheet puff pastry

1 pound turkey meat from turkey breast and/or thigh meat, cut into 1-inch chunks

3 eggs

1⁄2 cup chicken stock

1⁄4 cup Marsala

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Unbleached all-purpose flour, for the pastry

1⁄2 cupceleryslicedondiagonal

1⁄2 cupslicedbuttonmushrooms

1⁄2 cup Cranberry Chutney, plus more for serving

Fresh parsley sprigs for garnish

1. Following the instructions on thepackage,thawthepuffpastry. This will take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of pastry. You should be able to unfold it without it breaking. Set aside.

2. Pulse the turkey in a food processor until it is the consistency of ground beef. Add 2 of the eggs, the chicken stock, the Marsala, and the butter. Pulse again briefly, until just combined.

3. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface until it is a 12- or 13-inch square. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the pastry on top.

4. Form the minced turkey mixture into a log and position it down the center of the prepared puff pastry. Make an indentation down the length of the turkey and place the celery, mushrooms, and cranberry chutney along the indentation. Cover the indentation with the meat, forming a log once again.

5. Wrap the puff pastry around the turkey, neatly folding the ends and top together, rolling or tucking the edges together, and pinching to seal any gaps. Make the pastrycovered log as round as possible, like a Yule log — try to avoid a flattened version, like a strudel.

6. Preheat the oven to 450 F.

7. Combine the remaining egg with 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl or cup. Stir well until completely mixed. Brush the roulade with the egg wash, being careful to brush every bit of the exposed pastry.

8. Bake for 10 minutes at 450 F, then reduce the heat to 375 F. Continue to bake for 30 to 45 minutes longer, until the pastry has risen and is a toasty, golden color and the turkey has reached an internal temperature of 165

F. Generally speaking, once the pastry has cooked, the meat will be cooked, too. Remove the roulade from the oven. Transfer it to a serving platter, using the parchment paper to help you. Allowtorestforabout10minutes.

9. Slice and serve, garnishing with theparsleyandservedwithabowl of extra cranberry chutney.

How to Stop Dogs From Roughhousing

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My girlfriend and I moved in together recently, and we each brought a dog with us. I’ve got a German Shepherd named Mac, and her Golden Retriever is Diz. Both are about 2 years old, and they get along ne. However, in the evenings they roughhouse in the living room. We want them to just settle down so we can watch TV. Is this possible? --

DEAR LAURA: It’s very possible, even with younger dogs. And the sooner you establish behavior norms around a schedule, the better.

Diz’s playful personality probably balances out Mac’s serious working dog persona, so take advantage of this.

Wear them out: Both of these breeds are energetic. It’ll be much easier to keep them calm if you take them out for a walk or a romp at a dog park for about an hour before dinner and TV time.

Set the behavior: When it’s TV time, bring them into the room and give the “sit” or “lie down” and “stay” commands to each dog. Give them a treat only when they obey the commands.

Correct and redirect: When the dogs begin to wrestle or steal each other’s toys, tell them to stop. Call both dogs over and work on the basic commands again, then have them sit or lie down in the original spots.

Separate them: If they begin roughhousing again and no longer respond to commands, take Diz into one room and Mac into another.

is will take time and repetition. e goal is to get them to follow your commands for longer and longer periods until you no longer have to separate them. Be prepared to pause the TV and focus on their training for days or weeks. e long-term reward is worth it.

Serves 6 to 8

2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices

1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey

1/2 cup white wine

Zest of 1 lemon

Juice of 1 lemon

Fresh sage sprigs for garnish

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet overmediumheat.Addtheapples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

Manypeoplechoosetheirclothes based largely on their own unique fashion sense. But the clothes people wear can serve a greater purpose than broadcasting their sense of style to the world. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that clothing is the first line of defense against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet, or UV, rays. The right clothing can absorb and block UV radiation and the SCF recommends wearing such attire as part of an effective sun protection regimen. When purchasing clothing, consumers are urged to determine each article’s ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF. The UPF factor indicates what fraction of the sun’s UVA and UVB radiation can penetrate the fabric and reach the skin. Clothing with a UPF of 50 will only allow 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin. The UPF rating system is relatively new, so consumers in North America may not find UPF ratings listed on the labels of clothing they typically purchase from their favorite retailers. In addition, the sun protective clothing industry in North America is self-regulated, which means some, but not all, manufacturers’ claims regarding the safety of their clothing may be dubious. However, consumers concerned about the safety of the clothing they wear when spending time in the sun can speak with dermatologists about finding clothing manufacturers with strong reputations of producing sun protective clothing that can protect them from the sun’s UV rays.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH

The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams ofiron,thephytateandsoyprotein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

Leiden Can Still Receive Testosterone Therapy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Factor V Leiden, but I have been wanting to do testosterone replacement therapy. I have heard that testosterone causes blood clots. Obviously, with FVL, that would be a huge deal for me. Is this true? Does it cause clots, or is it safe for me to do? -- R.C.

ANSWER: Factor V Leiden is a common genetic variant that increases a person’s risk for developing a blood clot. However, a person who has never had a blood clot, but who is identified as heterozygous (meaning they only have one copy of the gene) for factor V Leiden, is still not likely to have a blood clot during their lifetime and is not recommended for treatment to prevent a blood clot.

Testosterone replacement therapy in men with FVL does increase the risk of blood clots in some studies, but not in others. In the studies that have shown an increase in risk, the risk has been estimated as approximately one person per thousand treated with testosterone each year. However, the risk occurs mostly during the first three months, and after two years on treatment, there is no additional risk. Thus, roughly one man per 500 who has FVL and gets treated with testosterone will get a clot, according to the studies that show an increase in risk. This is a small risk, but a blood clot is a significant potential problem. So, the risk of getting a clot should certainly go into the discussion about whether to give testosterone replacement to a man with FVL and symptomatic low testosterone levels. Most of the men I have seen with this issue have elected to take the replacement.

An ER MD at Rochester General Hospital was a Gem

In mid-October 2022 I went to the Rochester General Hospital emergency room (ER) and got there about 6:15PM. I went there because at about 5:15PM I took my blood pressure with my home device. It registered 202/102 which, for an 81 year old man, was very high. After waiting about an hour a nurse called me to the ER examine room and found my blood pressure lower at 155/95. A doctor then came in and after many medical questions stated I could leave and see my own MD the next day. I advised him that I had a problem. My wife was in the main waiting area in the front of the hospital being brought there in a wheelchair cause she could not stay in the darkish ER corridor with me. Also my car was in the ER parking lot. Dr. Singh became a gem and a savior. He got a wheelchair and pushed me to where my wife was. Then he got my 80 year-old wife in the wheelchair and pushed her for 10 minutes with me behind out of the waiting room through the ER to the ER exit. What Dr S. did was above and beyond

Shopping carts

If you can walk to get a shopping cart or handicap cart, why can’t you return it to the store or cart corral? The answer is just plain laziness! Instead, some leave them between parked cars or in front of their own car and then look around to see if anyone is watching before quickly scurrying away. Even with children, you still have to get one when you arrive. How would you like it if the wind blew one into your car and dented it? Bet you wouldn’t.

No delivery is that important

I was heading to [local town] about 6pm Friday and got almost to [local road] and someone with a red delivery sign on top came down [local road] doing about 60-70 mph and blew the stop sign straight across to [local road]. He had to be doing 70 mph down [local road]. Thank god there was not anyone coming the other way. I did not catch what delivery it was, just that it was a dark blue or black car or SUV with a red sign on top. There is no delivery that important to speed like that. Should be held accountable.

Right lane ends, merge left doesn’t mean accelerate then cut off the car that’s already in the proper lane. Slow down. Do you feel you have to be in front? You don’t have the right away!

Reorganize cluttered areas

If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re ableand separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.
