CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE

Commuting is a part of daily life for many working professionals. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, the average American spends 25 minutes commuting to work each day. However, Citi’s 2015 ThankYou Premier Commuter Index says the average commute time in the United States is 45 minutes. The reasons for that disparity are unknown, though if one accepts the latter statistic as more accurate than the yearsold Census Bureau data, it’s fair to say Americans spend far more time getting to work than their neighbors to the north. But commutes in Canada also can be lengthy, as Canada’s National Household Survey found that, in 2011, commuters in Canada spent an average of roughly 25 minutes traveling to work each day. While many people enjoy their daily commutes, feeling it’s a time to prepare for the day ahead and, if using public transportation, to relax and let someone else do the work, it’s fair to say the majority of commuters would like to spend less time getting to and from work. Many would also like to spend less money getting to and from their offices, and finding ways to conserve fuel is an effective way to do just that.

Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS

Water aerobics: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that waterbased exercises can be especially helpful individuals with chronic diseases, a category many seniors fall into. The CDC notes that one study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that improves the use of joints affected by arthritis without worsening symptoms. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also notes that swimming can lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease.

Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming.

PAW’S CORNER

Puppy Piddling is a Real Pain

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 6-month-old, medium-size mixed breed dog Jake has a problem I can’t seem to train him out of. Whenever he gets excited, he leaves pee droplets across the oor. Jake is healthy and energetic, and he housetrained quickly. What can I do to stop the piddling? -- Pupper Dad in Ohio

DEAR PUPPER DAD: ere’s a very good chance that it can be resolved. It will take time and training, though.

Puppies under a year old piddle when they get excited or when they think they’re in trouble. Part of it may be a smaller bladder, but another part of it is what’s called “submissive urination.” Dogs piddle instinctively to signal that you are their superior. However, this isn’t a wild dog pack outdoors; it’s you and your dog and your beautiful hardwood oor.

Punishing or yelling at Jake when he piddles will not solve the problem. e real issue is one of con dence and of nding where he belongs in the household. Most puppies stop piddling at around one year old, especially in a home where there’s a predictable structure, as they mature and settle into their place in the family.

Encourage this during Jake’s rst year by staying calm when he piddles. Yelling or trying to correct on the spot can make the problem worse. Clean up the urine and lead him to a di erent spot, and work on a basic command with him like “sit-stay.”

Try not to pay attention to Jake when you come in the door from work. Ask visitors to look away from him when they come in. Later, when you and your visitors are settled on the sofa, pay attention to Jake with lots of praise. Q&A Master Gardeners with

What is the process and ideal time of year to starting apple, pear, and peach trees from seed? What if you want to plant apple, pear, and peaches starting as small trees?

Many people mistakenly believe that fruit trees grow true to name from seeds. In reality, if you collect seed from a fruit grown on a plant, the seeds will produce plants that will be a hybrid of two plants. The new plant will be the same kind of plant, but its fruit and vegetative portions may not look the same as the parent because the plant is “heterozygous.” Therefore, all fruit trees must be vegetatively propagated by either

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

grafting or budding methods. Grafting and budding require a compatible rootstock or stock plant onto which you attach your desired variety of fruit plant. An inexpensive way to obtain a seedling rootstock is tocollectseedsfromthetypeof plant you are propagating. The seeds of all common tree fruits (apple, pear, peach, and cherry) require a chilling period before they will germinate and form new plants. Grafting and budding are relatively easy for apple trees, though for us that are more interested in having a fruit tree to plant purchasing a bar root tree is a preferredmethod.

Time of planting: We have routinely advised growers to plant bare rooted trees mid- to late March, April, or May. Several research studies have demonstrated the advantages of planting as soon in the spring as the soil conditions will allow. Trees planted in April have a decided advantage over those planted even one month later. As temperaturesincreaseinlatespring,

trees planted late will break bud sooner and struggle initially without a regenerated new root system developed. Avoid planting trees in frozenorwater-saturatedsoils.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS

RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills.

FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals.People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy,thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs.

The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

SCHOOLS,

(NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers.

They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time.

The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent).

There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker,67 percent of Americans support them.

These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker.is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System

When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training.

Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic.

Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

CAREGIVERS, TAKE CARE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAREGIVING DUTIES FROM OVERWHELMING YOU

(NAPSI)—Caregiving for a loved one can be a fulfilling, yet overwhelming experience. Forty million Americans provide care for their aging loved one each year, and spend an average of 24.4 hours per week doing so. Try as one may to create a balanced lifestyle, it’s a role that easily crowds out other important areas of life, including personal and professional relationships, and generates high levels of stress that could lead to serious health problems long-term if not managed.

Caregivers should feel empowered to adopt the following tactics to lighten the burden, and achieve a renewed sense of control:

Remember your own health: It’s important to not lose sight of your physical and mental health during particularly stressful times. Improve your energy level with smart eating choices: plan easy, healthy recipes that take less than 30 minutes, schedule grocery deliveries, or subscribe to meal kits. And, committing to just 10 minutes a day of moving your body will help you feel energized, while boosting your mental health. Exercise is also a good way to engage with your loved one—join them for a walk or even a water aerobics class.

Be transparent with your employer about your role as a caregiver: Burning the midnight oil to meet your caregiver and professional responsibilities doesn’t do you, your loved one, or your career any favors. Speaking candidly about the pressures you face as a caregiver with your employer can help relieve stress in the long run. Discuss options such as flexible work hours or working remotely, and set realistic expectations for yourself.

Leverage technology: Utilize tools that offer you visibility into your loved one’s health status and simplify the complexities of coordinating care. These solutions allow you to refocus yourattentiononthekeymomentsthat mattermostwithyourlovedones, while offering the peace of mind of knowing your loved one will have 24/7 access to help. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that enables you to easily form and activate a care circle of trusted family and friends, access meaningful insights into your loved one’s wellbeing, and manage your Philips Lifeline personal alert service. It helps you and your care circle be there for your aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey.

Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE

Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.

The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association.

Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.

Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.

The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.

Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.

Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.

Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.

Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.

A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.

Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

GREAT WEEKEND GETAWAY IDEAS

Make it a water-based weekend. No matter where you live, a body of water is no doubt nearby. Though the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicates that roughly 40 percent of the United States population lives in a coastal region, oceans aren’t the only places to find some sand and enjoy a warm summer breeze. Lakes and rivers are great places to relax, and getaway seekers can utilize sites like Airbnb and Vrbo to find short-term waterfront rentals.

Here’s a tip

• When baking, you can slow the rising time of dough by placing it in a cool place to rise. You can even let it rise in the refrigerator! Basically, it’s done rising when it’s doubled in size, so use that as your guide.

• Place individual fabric so ener sheets into sneakers to keep them fresh between wearings. You can use this for other shoes, too. Just be aware that the so ener sheet should stay inside the shoe; it could discolor certain fabrics on the outside.

• When baking savory bread, try substituting vegetable broth for the water in your recipe. It adds a deeper element of avor to the bread. Just try to use low-sodium broth so you don’t add too much salt to your bread.

According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, it is one of the most visited places in the United States.

Pure joy!

Many thanks to the fine ladies that volunteer at Avon’s Livingston County Humane Society. They allowed me to take a kitten to visit a dear friend at the Avon nursing home. She and some others enjoyed the kitten and a worker there may possibly adopt “George”! Please keep them in mind if you are looking to give a cat or kitten a furever home or even if you could provide foster care, they supply all the kitty’s necessities. Their dedication is appreciated by many.

Floral Beauty!

Thank you to the volunteers in the towns and parks that maintain the flower beds, everything is looking so wonderful this year!

Byrne Dairy - Geneseo

I would like to recognize Paul at Byrne Dairy in Geneseo. Paul goes above and beyond to keep the business clean, neat, items organized, and keeps fresh food stocked and if not available on the shelf, he will make it for customers. All employers could benefit from someone like Paul. Kudos to you, Paul...keep up the good work.

Concert prices

Why are concert prices skyrocketing?! The artists are just pricing out the little people who cannot shell out hundreds of dollars for a single evening out. Add to the $100 on a single seat, $10 for a bottled water or $20+ for anything else, that’s a solid day’s pay for a lot of people who would love to check out live music. No wonder people choose other options for their free time. I understand there’s a lot of hands in the pot, a lot of people who make the event happen, and salaries on top of venue costs, but when every person in a 10,000 person crowd paid a good $100 for that evening’s event, that’s a whopping $100,000 just for one event, not to mention the major profit of the food and beverage sales. Kinda outrageous, don’t ya think?

Do not judge by appearances!

As per the abuse of handicap parking signs: Perhaps it does exist, and I too get upset when I see people who seems to be without a need using the spaces. However, I am one of those whose health needs are not obvious. I have two very bad knees, as documented by X-rays. I have chronic insomnia which leaves me very weak and fatigued all the time. I need to park as closely as possible in order to get to a store. Using a cane does not work for me, because I also have poor balance. Although there may be a misuse of these signs, my doctor knows that I am truthful. I do use my sign. What bothers me is when people use these spaces without the needed signage to prove their need. As our population ages, we’ll need more of these spaces. May our society grow in courtesy toward those in need because it is seriously lacking!

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Hemorrhoid Surgery Doesn’t Deserve Its Bad Reputation

DEAR DR. ROACH: My 30-year-old, and otherwise healthy, grandson has been suffering from, and treating, hemorrhoids for two years. He is anemic due to his loss of blood. He’s had several bandings; they couldn’t complete the last one because he was in too much pain. They said they couldn’t anesthetize the area because his lack of feeling would prevent them from knowing if they were near a nerve. So, now they say he should have surgery, although it is said to be quite painful and difficult.

Do you agree that they can’t anesthetize the area for banding, and is the surgery as horrible to deal with as they say? Under what conditions would you say it is advisable to have the surgery? -- A.P.

ANSWER: Most people with a banding procedure do not need anesthesia, and nerve blocks are not used in hemorrhoidal banding because a feeling of pain is a useful indication that the band is not in the best position. When home treatments and office procedures (like banding, scleral therapy or infrared coagulation) are ineffective or can’t be used, it is time to consider surgical treatment. The surgery’s reputation of being “horrific” is undeserved. I have had several patients in the last few years undergo this surgical procedure, and although they have certainly had a few days of pain after the procedure, all have been happy with the outcomes. Surgeons often use long-acting local anesthetics, and the pain is greatly reduced when they are combined with better surgical procedures, compared to older surgical techniques and anesthesia.
