According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens. THE CENTER FOR DISABILITY RIGHTS HONORS THE 33RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE SIGNING OF THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT

On July 26th, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law by declaring it illegal to discriminate against people living with disabilities. e landmark legislation was a pivotal moment for disability rights in the US.

National Disability Independence Day now falls annually on July 26th to commemorate the signing of the ADA. 2023 marks the Act’s 33rd anniversary, and here in Rochester, NY, the Center for Disability Rights will host a gala to celebrate.

e gala will be on the anniversary itself – July 26th, 2023 – at ARTISANworks. In addition to celebrating the ADA’s signing, the Center for Disability Rights will recognize Kim Hill and Jennifer Skoog-Harvey for their hard work and dedication to supporting disability rights in New York State.

Hill is New York State’s Chief Disability O cer and will receive the Community Champion Advocate Award for her years of service, advocacy, and creating initiatives for individuals living with disabilities.

Skoog-Harvey, Chief of Sta to Assemblymember Harry Bronson, will receive the Adele Carlson Advocacy Award for her advocacy surrounding a case in which a paraplegic consumer faced losing services.

is year’s gala will be the rst one for CDR following the pandemic, andtheorganizationisexcitedtohonortheincredible work of its team and dedicated community members. All proceeds from the gala go directly to support services and programs at the Center for Disability Rights.

I was fortunate enough to be able to connect with CDR recently and spoke with Jason Barber, the Center’s Development Manager. In addition to sharing the exciting news about the gala’s return, Barber spoke about the amazing work CDR does every day. “We work hard daily to nd the needs for individuals that have been pushed aside or haven’t been addressed,” Barber said.

e Center for Disability Rights has three other locations in Geneva, Corning, and Albany. Guided by support from the organization’s CEO, BruceDarling,alongwitharemarkableLeadershipTeam,thisnotfor-pro t advocates for all community members with disabilities, regardless of age or ability to pay. CDR has grown exponentially over the last thirty years and currently serves 10,000 people with disabilities in New York State.

CDR provides a wide array of services for individuals, including sign language interpreting services, deaf and deaf/ blind services, service coordination, independent living support, disability employment connection, consumer directed personal assistance services (CDPAS), and more.

OneservicethathasgarneredalotofsuccessistheCommunity Supplemental Needs “Pooled” Trust program, which supplements consumers’ nancial needs. is program allows consumers to send any income surplus to the pooled trust. e trust then turns around and pays the bills and expenses for those same consumers.

It is clear that the Center for Disability Rights is personcentered and determined to advocate for the civil rights of all people living with disabilities. e organization aims to empower all individuals through encouraging autonomy, independent thinking, and providing support in all decision-making processes.

e Center is passionate about eliminating barriers to care and creating a society that is more just and equitable for all. e organization believes that one of the most important aspects of a just society is to support community-based and home-based services as opposed to institutional services. is provides people with disabilities the highest levels of independence and autonomy, and it allows for individuals to remain as integrated as possible in their community.

us, in light of the 33rd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Center for Disability Rights re ects on the spectacular successes achieved for the rights of people with disabilities, but they also look forward to the important work yet to be done. e organization will continue as a strong voice for developing and implementing equitable policies to support disability rights in New York and throughout the country.

For more information on the Center for Disability Rights, visit cdrnys.org. e Center is grateful for community members’ support, and all donations go directly toward their services.

DID YOU KNOW? If the 1927 song “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream” by Howard Johnson, Billy Moll and Robert A. King is correct, then the world has been a noisy place for quite some time. Though the exact origins of ice cream are unknown, historians agree this popular treat has been around for a very, very long time. The International Dairy Foods Association says the origins of ice cream may reach as far back as the second century B.C.Though he wasn’t around back then, the fifth Roman Emperor Nero, who ruled from 54 to 68A.D.,might have been so fond of iced treats that he routinely sent runners into the Apennine Mountains to retrieve snow that he would then flavor with fruits and juices. That tale might be apocryphal, but there’s no denying ice treats have been enjoyed for a long time. And based on a 2018 report from Grand View Research, Inc. that projected the global ice cream market would reach roughly $79 billion by 2025, it’s fair to say ice cream will remain popular for a long time to come as well.

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Penny Saver Readers are the Best!

I want to thank all of the Penny Saver readers who responded to my requests for household items for refugee families. Your generosity is inspiring!

Compassionate Caring Neighborhood Pharmacy

I have been fortunate to be near Meade Square Pharmacy in Victor for eight years. Today I had a dire situation with a medication I was prescribed which I could not use or return. The situation was handled with true compassion and reassurance by the owner.

Thank You

Gotta thank the nice man who gave me the plant at Tops Market in Hamlin. Still growing and looks beautiful. Sorry I didn’t get your name, but thanks again.

Watch Your Children

Parents, please watch your children! From kids walking home alone from school to playing in the park or just shopping. Today I had to call the police because a 10 year old girl was getting bullied by 5 to 6 other kids. Now I sat there awhile minding my own business but when the little girl was pushed and was told to go to the bathroom I already knew. The little girl literally screaming “I don’t wanna fight” and “no.” Now what’s crazy is those kids that were bullying that girl had an adult in the car across the street. What wrong, parents? No matter if your kid is “old enough” to go to the park by themselves you should be present in your child’s life. We live close to the water where people get trafficked the most. I’ve seen it all being a nurse: Kids come in unconscious, assaulted, overdosing, broken body parts from fights and being bullied all cause the parents and the adults are not around and are not paying attention to their kids behavior and actions.

Bad Drivers

Why are so many people driving around believing roads are only for them? Running red lights, not stopping at stop signs, tailgating, speeding etc. For those who believe they’re more important, you’re NOT! To the young ignorant kid today that cut me off, when I had the right away, at the red light you didn’t have the backbone to look over. You’re someday going to experience road rage for your self centered attitude.

Resale value: Many homeowners renovate their homes with eyes on improving the resale value of those homes. But if homeowners want to showcase a newly remodeled kitchen when selling their homes, they should be prepared for prospective buyers to ask who worked on the project. Fearing potential problems down the road, some buyers might be put off by homes that were remodeled by DIYers and not professional contractors.

Aluminum fencing is ideal for those looking for something that’s both ornamental and functional. Aluminum fencing may not appeal to those homeowners whose biggest priority is privacy, as aluminum fences are not solid walls. But aluminum fences are typically low maintenance, and they can be effective at keeping both kids and pets in the yard. Aluminum fences painted with a rust-inhibiting primer may require even less maintenance than aluminum fences painted without primer.

DID YOU KNOW?

Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition. People with Down syndrome may have mental impairment and a higher risk for various illnesses. While the public may be familiar with the hallmarks of Down syndrome, many people may not be aware that there are actually three different types of Down syndrome.

· Trisomy-21 (nondisjunction): This is the most common type of Down syndrome and is the result of an error in cell division called “nondisjunction.” The National Down Syndrome Society says nondisjunction results in an embryo with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two.As the embryo develops, the extra chromosome is replicated in every cell of the body. This type of Down syndrome accounts for 95 percent of all cases.

· Mosaicism: This is diagnosed when there is a mixture of two types of cells, indicates the NDSS. Some contain the usual 46 chromosomes, while the others contain 47. The cells with 47 chromosomes contain an extra chromosome 21. Research indicates people with mosaicism have fewer characteristics of Down syndrome than those with other types, but this form is the least common, accounting for roughly 1 percent of all cases.

· Translocation: Accounting for 4 percent of cases of Down syndrome, translocation is marked by 46 chromosomes in all cells. However, an additional full or partial copy of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome, usually chromosome 14. The presence of the extra full or partial chromosome 21 causes the characteristics of Down syndrome, says the NDSS.

No matter which form is diagnosed, people with Down syndrome have an extra portion of chromosome 21 present in some shape or form. This extra genetic material alters normal development in the body.

HOW TO EASE INTO EXERCISING

Men and women who resolve to get healthy often benefit by combining a healthy diet with regular exercise. Making such adjustments can be challenging, especially as men and women accustomed to sedentary lifestyles begin exercise regimens. Whether they’re fitness novices or returning to exercise after a long layoff, men and women can employ various strategies to make that transition go smoothly.

Work with a trainer. Many fitness facilities offer a handful of free personal training sessions to new members upon enrollment. Take advantage of such offers, as trainers can devise workout routines for people of various abilities. Trainers also can instruct new members how to use machines and help ensure they’re following proper form so they can avoid injury. If necessary, continue working with trainers after making use of complementary sessions. Personal training sessions typically can be purchased in batches, and men and women can continue working with trainers until they’re comfortable working out on their own. Embrace low-intensity exercises. Even men and women who were once accomplished athletes must take it slow when beginning an exercise regimen after a long layoff. Initial low-intensity exercise sessions might feel ineffective and seemingly produce few results. But early on, the goal is to simply get the body acclimated to physical activity. As their bodies adjust, men and women can begin to make their workouts more intense. Focus on flexibility. Sedentary bodies likely lack the flexibility of bodies more accustomed to exercise. Men and women who are becoming more physically active must include stretching in their workouts and cease exercising if they feel something tweak or suspect they have pulled a muscle.

Take days off. As men and women begin to see their work in the gym pay off, they may be tempted to push themselves hard, working out several days in a row without taking time off. But rest is an important component of an effective workout. Days off help the body repair itself and recover from vigorous activity.

Exercising for the first time or after a long layoff requires patience. But as men and women grow more acclimated to physical activity, they will begin to see the fruits of their labors.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

— Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever.Prior to your move,SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself.Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Install a pool: Pools are the ultimate spots to cool off on hot days.An elaborately shaped inground pool can blend in with the landscape and offer the ultimate hang-out zone. However, above-ground pools also serve the purpose and are more budget-friendly. Stock tank pools are popular among those who want minimal pool expenditure or have small spaces to work with. Stock tanks are metal vessels traditionally used as watering holes for livestock. They also can be “adult kiddie pools” when combined with some plumbing. Galvanized steel frames make them sturdy. With floats and other accessories, they can become the perfect oasis.

Many homeowners are under the impression that doing the work themselves can save a considerable amount of money. This may be the case for homeowners with renovation experience. But by and large, professional contractors are an asset to any renovation. They can provide a realistic overview of the project, map out projected costs, point out areas that could be troublesome, and may have industry contacts that can keep supply costs low. Even if a homeowner will do a portion of the job, a contractor can do the bulk of the work and keep the project on budget.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity. Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.

Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

Here’s a tip

• You can remove berry stains from your ngers with lemon juice. Got berry juice on your tablecloth? Here’s E.B. of Mississippi’s suggestion: “Pour a generous amount of milk on the spot, let it soak for 15 minutes or more. en soak in cold water with soap for an hour or more. Wash, rinse and dry.”

• Soak raisins in cold water before chopping so that they won’t stick to your knife.

• “Use celery ribs lined up to create a base for your roast. is way, the juices move around more and the roast never sticks to the pan. I serve the celery with the roas.-- A.T. in Tennessee

• Need to chill some drinks for a party fast? Pile on the ice, of course, then add the secret weapon: water. Icy water chills drinks quicker than placing them in ice alone. e heat is transferred from the warm drinks to the water because there’s total contact.

PAW’S CORNER

Puppy Piddling is a Real Pain

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 6-month-old, medium-size mixed breed dog Jake has a problem I can’t seem to train him out of. Whenever he gets excited, he leaves pee droplets across the oor. Jake is healthy and energetic, and he housetrained quickly. What can I do to stop the piddling? -- Pupper Dad in Ohio

DEAR PUPPER DAD: ere’s a very good chance that it can be resolved. It will take time and training, though.

Puppies under a year old piddle when they get excited or when they think they’re in trouble. Part of it may be a smaller bladder, but another part of it is what’s called “submissive urination.” Dogs piddle instinctively to signal that you are their superior. However, this isn’t a wild dog pack outdoors; it’s you and your dog and your beautiful hardwood oor.

Punishing or yelling at Jake when he piddles will not solve the problem. e real issue is one of con dence and of nding where he belongs in the household. Most puppies stop piddling at around one year old, especially in a home where there’s a predictable structure, as they mature and settle into their place in the family.

Encourage this during Jake’s rst year by staying calm when he piddles. Yelling or trying to correct on the spot can make the problem worse. Clean up the urine and lead him to a di erent spot, and work on a basic command with him like “sit-stay.”

Try not to pay attention to Jake when you come in the door from work. Ask visitors to look away from him when they come in. Later, when you and your visitors are settled on the sofa, pay attention to Jake with lots of praise. THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER

Water helps the gastrointestinal tract. Water can help maintain normal bowel function. When the body lacks sufficient fluid, the colon will pull water from stools in an effort to stay hydrated. That can lead to constipation, a condition in which people experience difficulty emptying their bowels. By drinking enough water, people can ensure their colon will not have to pull water from stools to stay hydrated, thereby helping them stay regular.

How to Avoid Calcium While Taking Thyroid Medication

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a thyroidectomy, and I take levothyroxine. Instructions for the medication state not to take it within four hours of consuming calcium. No discussion of the drug has clearly stated whether this only refers to calcium supplements or whether this also includes high-calcium foods.

I usually take levothyroxine when I wake up, between 2 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., to avoid breakfast dairy products (i.e. yogurt, cheese and soy milk) and dinner foods (broccoli, leafy greens, dairy and soy). I go to bed fairly early. I eat mainly plant-based, plus dairy.

I have asked some doctors and pharmacists, only to have them answer with the question: “Doesn’t that only apply to supplements?” I don’t know! That’s why I’m asking. I want my thyroid prescription to work as it’s supposed to. Can you shed light on this issue? -- E.G.

ANSWER: Large amounts of elemental calcium do decrease the absorption of the thyroid hormone, thyroxine. If you were to take thyroxine (Synthroid and others) at the same time as you would a large calcium pill, you could expect the thyroid medicine to be about 7% to 8% less absorbed. (Iron and caffeine also decrease thyroid hormone absorption.)

A glass of cow’s milk taken at the same time will decrease thyroid hormone absorption. Soy milk has not been studied, but I would expect calcium-fortified soy milk to be similar to milk, yogurt and some high-calcium cheeses in their ability to reduce thyroxine absorption. However, I think you may be taking things too far. One hour is probably adequate enough to separate calcium from thyroxine. Furthermore, if you are consistent in taking your medication, your dose will get adjusted to the correct level. I doubt that vegetables have any effect on absorption.

Finally, in a study of people who took thyroxine sometimes with and sometimes without their calcium, the change was not enough to get them out of the desirable range, although the levels were definitely affected. The dose of thyroid hormone has a little bit of leeway in most people, although some people (such as those with a history of thyroid cancer who are now on replacement therapy after surgery) need to have a very exact dosage. So, avoiding calcium, iron and caffeine in those cases is more critical.

WHAT THE NUTRIENTS FOUND IN MANY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES DO FOR YOUR BODY

Potassium: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans established by the United States Department of Agriculture list beat greens, lima beans, swiss chard, baked potatoes (with skin), and yams as great sources of potassium. Kiwi, melon, cantaloupe, and bananas are additional sources of potassium. The T.H. Chan School of Public Health reports that the main role of potassium in the body is to help maintain normal levels of fluid inside the cells. Potassium also supports a normal blood pressure.

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT

(NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys.

COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs.

In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage.

“A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.”

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY

Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis.

If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive.

Hospital shortages

Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU.Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in.

Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19.

More poll results

The poll also found:

• Only17percentAmericansareawareof acutekidneyinjuryasaresultof COVID-19;

• Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure;

• 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure;

• 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia;

• 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome.

SEEKING INTERESTED PROPERTY OWNERS FOR PARTICIPATION IN A LIVINGSTON COUNTY MANUFACTURED HOME REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

Livingston County, in partnership with Cattaraugus Community Action, Inc. (CCA) has been awarded a New York State Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for a Manufactured Home Replacement Program. e program will facilitate the removal and replacement of up to 4 dilapidated or hazardous mobile homes in Livingston County with new Energy Star rated homes, at no expense to the homeowner.

Only dilapidated mobile homes meeting CDBG property condition standards are eligible to be replaced. Mobile homes must also be owneroccupied, with the owner being of low- to moderate-income and owning the home and the land where the home is sited.

e County and CCA have established a wait list of potentially eligible and interested program recipients and are looking to further add to the list. Final selection of properties for removal and replacement will be decided via a random draw lottery. Inclusion on the wait list does not guarantee nal program selection.

If interested in having your property added to the wait list or to learn more about the program, please contact Joe Gunther, Community Development Specialist, at (585) 243-7550 or JGunther@co.livingston.ny.us.

For adequate time to complete the wait list and conduct the random draw lottery, all interested are asked to respond to this ad by August 18, 2023.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer

• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

PITFALLS TO AVOID FALLING INTO DEBT

Failure to budget: A budget is the most effective way for individuals to gain control of their spending. That lesson seems to resonate more with young people than older men and women. A 2019 poll from Debt.com found that 74 percent of consumers between the ages of 23 and 38 use a budget to govern their spending, while only 67 percent of consumers between the ages of 39 and 54 use a budget. A failure to budget can increase the risk of spending impulsively and make it hard for consumers to see what’s coming in and what’s going out. That’s a recipe for accumulating debt.

Q&A Master Gardeners

What are good ground cover ideas for beds in this area?

There are so many groundcovers available, it can be difficult to select the best one for your garden. I think the most important quality is that it has to be easy remove. Groundcovers spread easily and can easily choke out your desired plants. I do not recommend plants including vinca and English ivy for this reason.

Ihaveacoupleofgroundcovers

that I rely on. For sun, I enjoy the low-growing sedums. There are numerous varieties, all are easy to pull back when they start to crowd into other plants and aren’t usually bothered by deer. For shade, I enjoy cranesbill, also called perennial geranium. It has flowers in various shades of pink, lavender and white, so it combines easily with most other garden colors. Again, it is easily pulled out with my bare hands. In my yard it may

get nibbled by deer, but they don’tusuallypreferit. Sometimespeoplearelooking for a taller groundcover to fill an empty spot. I often rely on daylilies in this case. They need full sun to produce a lot of flowers and yield fewer flowers as shade increases.

There are taller varieties of cranesbill available for those shadyareas.

It seems likely that professional educators subscribe without reservation to Santayana’s “thought.” Some parents seem to feel that the public schools are fully responsible for the education of their children, and they feel absolutely no responsibility for assisting. Indeed, the “support” from such homes may be negative.

The schools have a child for a few hours each day. It is in the home where children learn some of the most important lessons. The parents who truly love their children will do all they can to supplement the school’s efforts, especially in the examples they set.

We recognize the need of some families for a minimum services at minimum cost. We offer immediate disposition when such service best meets a family’s needs.

A love le er to our son, Anthony

Time has stood still since that tragic night, Anthony, when you were taken from your loving family.

It’s been a year already, Anthony, but it seems like yesterday. We miss you every day: your funny jokes, your laughter, and that beautiful smile.

You were a loving son, always there to help us and others. You may not be here now, but you will never be forgotten.

Anthony, you touched so many lives in such a short time. We would have loved to see you grow old with your family.

We are so proud of all your achievements and the honors you have received from the Rochester Police Department and the Tactical Unit 8.

We were so grateful for the time we had with you, Anthony, and the wonderful memories we shared.

WOMEN AND STEM

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence.

According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas

If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re ableand separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE

Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
