According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 people were treated for fireworks injuries in emergency rooms in 2020. In addition, injuries and deaths from fireworks increased by 50 percent between 2019 and 2020. Forty-four percent of those injuries were burns, 30 percent involved the hands and fingers and 22 percent affected the head, face and ears. USCPSC data also indicated that 15 percent of injuries affected the eyes. The majority of injuries (66 percent) occurred around the July 4th holiday, but it’s important that individuals exercise caution whenever they celebrate with fireworks. And those precautionary measures should remain in place when using sparklers, which the USCPSC indicates caused 900 injuries in 2020.

The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. Learning the Signs That Lead to COPD

DEAR DR. ROACH: What signs and/or symptoms do you need for a doctor to determine whether you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)? -- R.K.

ANSWER: The diagnosis of COPD is suspected in people who are at risk for the disease and note one of two cardinal symptoms: cough or dyspnea. (A “symptom” is what a patient identifies by history, while a “sign” is noted on a physical exam. A cough can be both a symptom and a sign.) Dyspnea is usually described as shortness of breath, a sensation that a person can’t get enough air, like they have just run very fast. Some people with COPD may have very subtle symptoms.

Smoking is the biggest risk factor for COPD, but there are other causes, including other chemical exposures (industrial exposures and home cooking fires are less common now, but are historically important causes of COPD); scarring lung disease; and a genetic cause, a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

The diagnosis is confirmed most often by tests of lung function, which are breathing tests to look at the physiology of the lung and its ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Sometimes the diagnosis can be supported by an X-ray or CT scan, but pulmonary function testing is the best way to determine the severity of COPD. We do have ways of slowing down lung decline in COPD, one way being smoking cessation for current smokers, but some of the medications we use also help reduce ongoing damage. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Please help! Is it true that Trulicity may cause serious side effects, including thyroid tumors and cancer, as well as pancreatitis? -- J.R.

ANSWER: Dulaglutide (Trulicity), like semaglutide (Ozembic) and liraglutide (Victoza), are in a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which have several actions, such as increasing insulin release by the pancreas in response to meals. Initial studies on laboratory rats did show an increase in an unusual type of thyroid cancer, but studies have not yet shown an increased rate in humans. Still, people at an increased risk for this type of thyroid cancer (having a family history of medullary thyroid cancer or of multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2A or 2B) are not recommended to take this medication. Similarly, there are reports of pancreatitis in people taking this medication, but it isn’t clear whether the medicine is responsible for the pancreatitis. It’s unwise to use this class of medication in people with a history of pancreatitis.

Summer health and beauty guidelines

Try tinted moisturizer. A carefree, breezy look often means not being weighed down by a lot of makeup. It may be possible to skip foundation and rely only on concealer to cover up small blemishes or alleviate dark circles under the eyes. Another option to try is tinted moisturizer, which can keep skin supple and offer a light amount of color to even out pigment. BB creams also can provide you with an all-in-one beauty product, as such creams frequently contain sunscreen, color tinting and anti-aging ingredients.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer

• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER

Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

Shout Out

A huge shout out and a big thank you to the Village of Avon and the Avon Village crew who did an awesome job in upgrading the Avon Driving Park. The new sidewalks and the well-manicured grounds are beautiful. Everything prepared a warm welcome to the 2nd annual Avon Driving Park Pleasure Show sponsored by the Western NY Combined Carriage Association. Thank you!

Big Thank You

To the DOT, Contractor and crews that repaved Dansville Streets. They did a very good job under difficult conditions of traffic and weather with very little interference to the business on main street.

Unbelievable amount of wasted time

If my neighbors dedicated as much time to eradicating cancer and other critical issues facing this country as they do their landscaping, these problems would be an issue of the past without a doubt. Cutting your grass 4-5 times a week? Are you kidding me? It’s proven these pesticides being used on your yards cause cancer, not to mention it’s gas exhaust going into the atmosphere. I told my wife to leave me if I spent this much of my time on green grass. Weeds in my yard!? Blasphemy! Would rather live my life and enjoy my family. Call me crazy.

Wrongfully Accused

To the lady in front of me in the white SUV at the [fast food restaurant] drive thru Saturday 7/22 at 7:00am that yelled at me “it’s inconsiderate to smoke in the drive thru” and complain about me to staff at the pick up window and then speed off like lightening, I’ve got news for you-I DON’T SMOKE! I was just getting a coffee before going to work and that made for a rough start for what was going to be a hard day. You really should be ashamed of yourself.

Wait it out - Those with the luxury of time may continue to wait for inventory to increase and prices to decrease. Tech experts, including Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, expect chip shortages to persist into 2024. If a person’s vehicle is in good condition, it may be more economical to hold on to it a little longer and do the maintenance required.

Determine the charging time of your vehicle note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

GAS IN A CAR WON’T STAY FRESH FOREVER

Can gas go bad? Yes it can, the lighter, more volatile components of gasoline evaporate over time. Old gas can compromise engine performance, potentially causing a car to hesitate or stall. Gas that has gone bad can begin to smell like varnish. To determine if gas smells differently, drivers should remove the gas cap and stand next to the car where you would normally put the gas pump. If you detect an aroma of varnish, then the gas has likely gone bad. Gas can begin to go bad in as little as three months, so drivers who haven’t driven much over that period may have bad gas in their tanks. One way drivers can combat bad gas, even if they aren’t driving much, is to add fuel stabilizer when filling up the tank. Fuel stabilizer keeps gas from degrading, but it’s only effective if it is mixed with good gasoline, hence the reason to add it when filling up and not when you detect the gas already in the car has gone bad.

HENRIETTA’S TINKER NATURE PARK AND HANSEN NATURE CENTER OFFER REFUGE FOR ALL YEAR-ROUND

If you’re a birdwatcher, hiker, or parent with younger children, chances are you’ve experienced the 68-acre natural oasis that is Tinker Nature Park. As I drive down Calkins Rd., I o en see people enjoying the 1.2-mile self-guided walking/exercise trail. What better way to get out and walk than to enjoy the natural beauty of a nearby park.

School groups from the area enjoy annual excursions to its natural beauty with multiple habitats with rich wildlife across each. I learned a lot when each of my girls’ classes headed to Tinker Park for a nature hike with the knowledgeable docent and toured the Hansen Nature Center with its displays of native birds and animals in their natural habitats (including a working beehive, so cool!) At the Nature Center, you can also nd illustrated guides and checklists for the plants and animals you’ll likely nd on the property – so cool for the treasure hunting sorts.

You may have seen the park, you’ve perhaps even checked out the nature center and its amazing public programming, but have you ever checked out the cobblestone building out front?

During Tinker’s annual events, my family and I like to stop in to the Tinker Homestead and nd it a fascinating glimpse into 1830s America. We mostly see such homes only at the Genesee Country Village in Mumford, so it’s incredible to see one in our own backyard. Caretakers and volunteers do a great job maintaining the building for the public to experience. I’ve been inside in all seasons, and we especially appreciate modern comforts when the cold Rochester winds blow. But stepping into the federal style home is like stepping into history, so

house has been restored to the turn of the 20th century. Visitors will appreciate the practical yet elegant Victorian lifestyle of this rural family.”

e Farm Museum in the barn next door “charts the growth of agriculture in Western New York from subsistence to commercial farming. Visitors will understand how the Erie Canal forever changed the face of farming in New York state. e farm is composed of several structures that were important to the success of the Tinker Farm. e museum has an extensive collection of farm implements which chart the modernization of farming through the years.”

Public tours of the homestead and farm museum are available ursdays and Saturdays, and by appointment Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It’s de nitely a worthwhile site to check out.

My family and I enjoy the programming at Tinker Park, including its Ice Cream Social, Harvest Festival, and celebration for the winter holidays. Check out their summer concert series at the Henry Hansen Amphitheater on Fridays, Yoga at the park on Saturdays, or check out their Wild Tinker activities, Fall Foliage events, or perhaps rent cross country skis or snowshoes in winter. Perhaps join the Tinker Trekkers (55+) group that convenes to enjoy a hike with other nature enthusiasts. On the east side of the park is a pavilion and playground as well, rounding out the treasures on the Tinker Nature Park property.

Whatever you choose, get out and enjoy the beauty around us in this public treasure. We have such beautiful natural resources around us.

According to Henrietta historians, “ e Tinker Family occupied this homestead for six generations. ey witnessed the transformation of Western New York from a wooded frontier to a thriving community. As a result of the Erie Canal giving farmers access to new markets, the Tinkers could a ord to build a new home. ey chose to build a cobblestone house, a unique architectural style to Western New York. Construction started in 1828 and the house was completed in 1830. e interior of the

How do you move an established grapevine?

There are important factors to keep in mind when attempting to move an established grapevine:

1.Timing–Yourbestchanceof success involves moving the grapevine when it is dormant (after the leaves have dropped in late fall through early spring, before the buds begin to swell).

2. Pruning—Cut back all the long canes to the main stem, leaving 3 to 6 inch stubs with 2-3 buds each.

3. Digging—Start digging down

from

Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

around the vine up to 3 feet from the stem (depending on the size of the grapevine). Grape roots are fibrous and extensive, growing out shallowly and deeply searching for moisture.Try not to damage the roots as much as possible, loosening the soil between the roots. Prune off any broken root ends.

4. Plant in a suitably prepared hole using the same soil from the hole to carefully cover the spread-out roots. You don’t need to fertilize the planting until the second year.A nice compost mulch on top is fine.

5. Keep the new planting watered about every other day until the ground freezes (fall) or in spring until spring rains take over.

I prefer early spring planting. There is less chance of winter damage (cold drying winds, animal damage, etc.). Planting a young rooted grape cutting or grafted cutting is much easier and usually more successful

than transplanting an older vine, but I fully understand the desire to keep a favorite grape variety growing in a new location. You may consider keeping some of the cuttings from the original vine and rooting them as insurance in case the original fails to thrive. Good luck!

HOW TO INVOLVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE IN AGRICULTURE

Encourage agriculture-based curriculum. After recognizing that the majority of Kenyan students had no access to farming training and education, the organization Farm Africa initiated a program to make agriculture more accessible to students. Students who participated learned about everything from keeping livestock to marketing produce for global markets. Similar programs can be encouraged in developed countries where opportunities in the field of agriculture figure to increase in the years to come.

To help our children learn the placement of states, we glued a map to a piece of cardboard, then used a razor knife to cut each state out along its lines. is created a puzzle. It made learning the states fun, and we wrote the capitals on the backs, so we learned those, too.-- M.A. in Georgia

Keep extra magazines in the car to read when you have to wait or while sitting in line at the bank or fast-food drivethrough.

I purchased extra-large safety pins and used scraps of fabric to designate towels for family members. CREATE A SALE-WORTHY SHOWPLACE

The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover” can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for prospective buyers. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps.

De-personalize the home. Homeownersfilltheirspaceswithfamily photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items.

Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.

Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on. Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms.

Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones.

Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean.

Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents.

Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE

To flip or not to flip: Flipping properties gained popularity in the second decade of this century, but figures from the property database curator ATTOM Data Solutions indicates that returns on investments in flipped properties declined for the third straight year in 2020. Though flipping can still yield a strong return, investors may not realize the returns on flipped properties that they might have realized as recently as five years ago. Potential investors should conduct some research regarding real estate market trends, including flipping data where available, to make the most informed decision possible.

RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE IN DOGS

What is heat stroke? Dogs suffer from heat stroke when their body temperatures exceed 104 F and the built-in mechanisms they rely on to cool themselves - including panting - cease to function properly. But any temperature 103 F or above is considered abnormal. According to PetMD, heat stroke is a form of non-fever hyperthermia that can lead to multiple organ dysfunction.

PAW’S CORNER

Who’s liable when a dog

bites a dog sitter?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a sweet little mixed Terrier named Cookie who’s devoted to me. He’s not so devoted to other people, and he barks at strangers and other dogs. Recently, I had to take a business trip and could not bring Cookie with me. So I paid a local dog sitter to come and visit each day.

e sitter messaged me on the rst day and said that he would not be continuing to take care of Cookie because my dog bit him when he tried to put on his halter. I had to scramble and call in favors for a family member to go and get Cookie for the week.

On top of this, the sitter wants me to pay his medical bill because he says it’s my fault the dog bit him. I say the sitter inconvenienced me, and it’s not my liability. What do you think? -- Carl in San Diego

DEAR CARL: Ouch! I’m sorry this happened to you, and to the sitter who was bitten. Situations like this can get complicated, especially when you weren’t there to witness what happened.

Remain calm and try to get as much information from the sitter and from your relative as possible about what happened, and about Cookie’s behavior while you were gone.

In California, courts have usually taken the view that, like dog groomers, pet sitters and walkers accept that there is a risk of being bitten by a dog in their line of work (www.sallymorinlaw.com/dog-bites/whos-liable-if-a-dog-bites-me-whenits-with-a-dog-sitter/). It seems like this is the case here, but I am not an attorney. If you feel that this situation is going to escalate into a lawsuit, consult an attorney before deciding what to do next.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC

Climate control: Attics are converted to provide residents with more livable space. Converted space is only livable if the climate within the attic can be controlled so it’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. An existing HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable, forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats to offset that discomfort. That also could affect the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward with an attic renovation, homeowners should contact HVAC professionals to determine if attic spaces can be serviced with the existing units and ductwork, or if an alternative arrangement must be worked out to make the spaces livable.

Help plants survive sizzling summer heat Monitor soil moisture. Soil moisture, or a lack thereof, can help homeowners determine if their plants are struggling to survive the heat. To check soil moisture levels, use a ruler or even your finger, sticking either two inches into the ground where you suspect the soil is drying out. If the soil is damp two inches below the surface, then your plants are likely retaining enough moisture to withstand the heat. If the soil is dry two inches below, then you may want to give the soil a deep soak.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.

Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.

Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

BUDGETING FOR LONG VACATIONS ABROAD

Calculate pre-trip prices: Start shopping destinations to see which locales align with your budget. Compare and contrast estimates as to how much each destination may cost on a daily basis. Prices can vary widely depending on the destination, and this is a great way to some pre-trip notion of what your dream trip will cost.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS

It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB

Flexibility: Retirees may be looking to contribute to their communities or simply earn a little spending money, but they will likely still want the freedom to travel or spend time with their families whenever they choose. So flexibility is something to look for in a postretirement job. This is what makes consultant work so attractive to retirees. In-person hours may not be required of consultants, who can then offer their input while visiting their grandchildren or traveling the world.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE

Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
