MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Jan. 5, 1949, President Harry Truman announces in his State of the Union address that every American has a right to expect from our government a “fair deal,” including national health insurance, public housing, civil-rights legislation and federal aid to education. To some, the Fair Deal smacked of socialism. Charities are always in need of financial donations, but men and women also can make a difference by donating items to their favorite nonprofit organizations.

Feel Festive with Florals An easy first step to bring your home into the holiday season is to add festive fresh or dry floral arrangements. Evergreens and poinsettias always convey the essence of the season, but blooms in hues of rich purple, crisp white and even funky fuchsia will add cheerful energy to any room. A small floral arrangement on a bathroom vanity, for example, adds warmth and color - a particularly nice touch if you’re hosting guests.

A w orking smoke ala rm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than tw enty percent of American homes are w ithout them. The peak time for home fire fatalities is betw een 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., w hen most families are asleep. Bedrooms Do not trap electrical cords against w alls. Heat can build up, posing a fire hazard. Use only lab-a pproved electric blankets and w armers. M ake sure cords are not w orn or coming apart. Do not leave electric blankets sw itched on all night unless they are marked “ suitable for all night use.” Keep bedding, curtains and other combustible items at least three feet aw ay from space heaters. Never smo ke in bed. Replace mattresses made before the 2007 Federal M attress Flammability Standard. By law, mattresses made since then are required to be s afer. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Zero-Calorie Drinks No Match for Water

Stick to a sleep schedule. Make sure that you go to bed and get up at roughly the same time each day, even on weekends. Having a consistent sleep pattern helps regulate your body’s sleep-wake cycle, helping you to sleep better at night. If you have trouble falling asleep within the first 20 minutes or so of going to bed, that’s okay - simply go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel tired. Agonizing over falling asleep will only make it tougher for you to get the rest you need.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I walk 30-60 minutes about four times a week and drink several times from a water bottle that I carry with me. Would it be OK to occasionally substitute caffeine-free diet soda for the water? ANSWER: I’ve talked a few times about diet soda, and the controversy about whether it helps people lose weight or whether, despite having zero calories, it makes people more likely to gain weight. There has been evidence for both. A recent and fascinating study was published showing that artificially sweetened beverages predispose a person to higher blood sugars, and that the effect was due to changes in the bacteria in our gut (called the microbiome). These bacteria have become the focus of intensive study of how important they are for our overall health. I recommend against habitual use of artificially sweetened beverages. Occasional use of diet soda is unlikely to harm much; however, water -- still or bubbly, plain or with a wedge of fruit -- is the best and most natural way to hydrate. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 68 years old, and will be having bypass surgery soon. After my surgery, will L-arginine be good for my heart? I know I will be walking every day. -- G.J.S. ANSWER: L-arginine, an amino acid, has been shown to increase nitric oxide in blood vessels of people with high blood cholesterol and blockages in their arteries. There are two studies I know of that showed no effect from arginine on blood flow or inflammation. On the other hand, one study showed that supplements of arginine, along with phytoestrogens, B vitamins and vitamins C and E (as part of a medical nutrition bar) in people with angina improved some blood flow measurements and the ability to exercise on the treadmill. It also has been shown to have some benefits in people with heart failure. Based on these studies, I don’t recommend arginine after cardiac bypass surgery. However, there may some benefit, and since it is unlikely to be harmful, I wouldn’t try to dissuade someone who wanted to give it a try. The booklet on heart attacks, America’s No. 1 killer, explains what happens, how they are treated and how they can be avoided. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had radiation treatment in 2011 for a goiter. I know tanning beds are very dangerous, but are spray tans dangerous for me? -- V.V. ANSWER: Dihydroxyacetone, the most common coloring agent in spray-on tans, is generally considered safe, but you should avoid getting it around your eyes, mouth and nose. There is some controversy, but the Food and Drug Administration has considered it safe. The radiation treatment for goiter slightly increases risk for cancer, especially leukemia. I think it reasonable to do what you can to reduce cancer risk, but I don’t think tanning spray is a big risk. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? The Internet has made it easier than ever before to access information quickly. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable. But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice. “Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. In fact, a 2008 Microsoft analysis of online search patterns found that one-third of the hundreds of thousands of people examined in the analysis tended to escalate their medical-related searches, potentially turning relatively minor medical conditions into something far worse, all without consulting a doctor. Men and women concerned about symptoms or medical problems should resist the temptation to self-diagnose online and should book an appointment with their physicians instead.

The Finger Lakes Concert Band, under the direction of Gregory Kane, celebrated the holidays with a special concert entitled “In the Spirit of Giving” on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the Canandaigua Academy Auditorium, 435 East Street, Canandaigua, NY. According to Kane, “The concert is our gift to the Canandaigua community.” Traditional Christmas favorites, as well as lesser-known but wonderful seasonal additions, were featured in the performance. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Babes in Toyland,” “The Nutcracker” and “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” were included in the festive arrangements along with a beautiful composition of “Blue Lake.” Sponsored by Hochstein School of Music & Dance and comprised of adult instrumentalists and advanced high school students from the Greater Finger Lakes community, the Finger Lakes Concert Band rehearses weekly and gives several concerts per year featuring a wide variety of music ranging from standard wind band literature and orchestral transcriptions to music of the jazz and pop idioms. Mr. Gregory Kane currently teaches music in the Canandaigua school system

and is a passionate believer that music should be taught in all schools to children of all ages. As a graduate of The Crane School of Music, he holds Bachelor’s degrees in both Music Education and French Horn Performance. He also holds a Master of Music degree in Music Education from Ithaca College in addition to completing coursework at the Eastman School of Music. As a performer, he enjoys performing as a jazz pianist, as well as on the French Horn. He has performed with the Monroe County Music Educators Wind Ensemble, Southern Tier Symphony Orchestra, Southern Tier All-Star Jazz Band, Greater Finger Lakes Jazz Orchestra, Hornell Area Wind Ensemble, Honeoye Falls Community Band and at various other freelance performances. The Finger Lakes Concert Band (FLCB) is in its 32nd season and is comprised of adult instrumentalists and advanced high school students from all parts of the Finger Lakes region. Under the auspices of Hochstein School of Music and Dance, the Finger Lakes Concert Band rehearses weekly and performs several concerts per year featuring a wide variety of music ranging from standard wind band literature and orchestral transcriptions to music of the jazz and pop idioms. Seniors and exericse: Tips to avoid injuries, get healthy

Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise can improve mood, promote an active lifestyle and reduce a person’s risk for a host of ailments, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite the importance of exercise, many people live sedentary lifestyles into their golden years. Seniors who want to embrace a healthier way of life and get more physically active should first consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen. Certain medications may limit just how far seniors can push themselves, while preexisting conditions may make specific types of exercise off limits. After discussing their limitations with their physicians and developing a safe exercise routine, seniors can heed the following tips to avoid injury but still get healthy. · Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner,

LIVINGSTON EDITION

at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services. · Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises. · Stretch. Bodies that have been inactive for lengthy periods of time are inflexible, and lack of flexibility increases your risk for injury. The AAOS recommends that seniors warm up their bodies before stretching with five to 10 minutes of low-intensity activity such as walking. Then stretch gently, remembering to relax and breathe during each stretch. · Switch things up. When strength training, do not work the same muscle group two days in a row. Muscles need time to recover. If you prefer circuit strength training where you exercise various muscle groups in one day, do not strength train on back-to-back days, leaving at least one day in between strength training sessions so muscles have ample time to recover.

Today’s auto manufacturers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instances, roof racks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE While some might question whether regular attendance at religious services actually exerts a positive effect on health, a recent study involving 115,000 women may help clear up the matter. The women (all nurses) were studied over a period of 16 years, which enabled researchers to rule out the possibility that the healthy among them were churchgoers. After analyzing data from questionnaires that the women completed every four years, it was determined that those who attended religious services more than once per week had one-third the mortality risk of women who never attended services. Researchers also acknowledged that going to services is only one way to measure spirituality, which may also be induced through meditation and other practices. We hope you found this topic to be both interesting and informative. The caring staff at KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME will work with you, making sure to incorporate whatever religious traditions you choose into the commemoration service. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. Please visit our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Make your own Bible. “One of the delights known to age and beyond the grasp of youth is that of ‘Not Going’…”

~ J.B. Priestley Members of the younger generations suffer from an imagined necessity for doing what others are doing, solely because “everyone is doing it.” Probably most of the questionable habits of today’s teenagers can be traced to “peer pressure.” Each youngster feels he or she must go along with all group activities or be branded as a non-conforming “oddball” or “loner.” As we grow older, we realize that what others do is the worst guide for our own behavior. We learn the delight, and the relief, of simply “not going” to any place or practice that we dislike or disagree with. The pre-planning of one’s own funeral arrangements relieves your loved ones of the burden of making painful decisions under stress. Ask our friendly staff about the details.

The December 3rd Santa’s Coming to Town event was again well attended and appreciated by the parents and community, with lots of fun for the children. Thanks to the Hancock family and Rotary Interact volunteers, including Sarah Carney, Madison Luft and Eliza Kime for make and take craft projects. Thanks to Thinking of You Photography by Greg and Peggy Norry for photos with Santa, always a big hit. ACS Art students including Carolyn Farmer, Parker Hughes, Izzy Marzec and Madison Marzec were kept very busy and did a fantastic job with face painting. Thanks to the Avon United Methodist Women who provided tempting cookie arrangements beautifully wrapped for the bake sale. Thanks to The Avon Preservation & Historical Society who offered beautiful poinsettias and crafts. Thanks to the Girl Scouts of WNY for their participation. Of course, thanks to all the volunteers and Avon Central School, Tops Markets and Dunkin Donuts for donations for the event. What a wonderful, generous and supportive community that we live in! On November 20th my 3 month old son and I were driving down Route 77 when our car fishtailed and rolled off the road into a ditch. As a first time mom the terror I felt was unimaginable. I wanted to express my gratitude to the woman and her son who graciously let us stay in their pickup truck while we waited for the EMT to arrive. I regret never getting your name to send our thanks, the prayer blanket you gave my son to keep him warm has been by his side ever since. You were a blessing when we needed it most, thank you. Thanks to the community for their support of the Red Kettle Drive for the Salvation Army! Whether you dropped coins in the kettle or volunteered to ring the bell, you made a positive impact on an initiative that helps to provide essential services to those in need!

“Joy to the World” - A large group of home schooled children and their moms came to the GCNH on 12/16/16 to sing Christmas carols! You brought joy to the residents with your radiant voices and smiles. It is ever exciting to see children loving on the forgotten ones!!! Thank you for serving and blessing us all! Merry Christmas! Thank you to Mr. Greene and parent volunteers for giving up their time to put on a free basketball program for the 3rd and 4th graders in LeRoy. It’s a great way for kids to keep active this winter! To Kathy Lutz, Thank you for the heartfelt care you generously give others and wonderful outlook on life. You are an amazing lady! I, unfortunately, have to go to dialysis due to kidney failure. I want to take this opportunity to say how blessed I feel that I can go to Lake Plains Dialysis Center here in the city! The people who work there are very dedicated and treat all of us patients with exceptional care! They do everything in their power to make our time there as good as it can possibly be! I want to take this time to thank them all! Sincerely, Pat Campbell

Focus on projects with betterthan-average returns that may yield additional savings in other ways. For example, installing new windows will cost $10,000 to $20,000 on average but return 75% to 80% of your investment. And those improvements have the added benefit of making your home more energy-efficient, so you’ll also save on your electricity and heating bills. Plus, you may qualify for tax credits that will further offset the cost of making the changes. For the complete list, go to energystar.gov.

It’s about mapping out what you want to do and planning a route to get there” says Lee Witt, a musician, corporate consultant and author who successfully changed careers in mid-life. In his new book, “The BrickHouse Band: How An Ordinary Mid-Life Couple Created A Business Phenomenon,” Witt reveals how he and his wife, while busy with full-time careers, founded a band that became one of the most successful corporate and casino cover bands on the West Coast. “It’s not enough to want something; you have to plan well,” he advises. Know Your Destination Many people know what they like, but few have clear visions of what they want their lives to look like. You have to know your destination before you can map out how to get there. Does successfully living your passion mean making millions? Critical acclaim and recognition? Helping others? Figure this out first and then plan your route.
