FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2016

Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs. Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches. The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.

• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you. Seniors need not abandon their love of sport just because Father Time is catching up w ith them. M any sports can be enjoyed by athletes of all ages.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!

7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

Balsam fir is a beautiful pyramidal tree with short, flat, long-lasting, aromatic needles. Balsam fir and Fraser fir have many similar characteristics and some botanists consider them extensions of the same species. Their geographic ranges do not overlap and the Balsam fir has to have cold winters and cool summers. Balsam fir has a nice, dark green color and very fragrant. The tree was named for the balsam or resin found in blisters on bark and which was used to treat wounds in Civil War.

Some people may think they know how to wrap gifts, only to realize it’s harder than it looks once the paper, scissors and Scotch tape comes out. Relearn the basics by viewing online tutorials prior to wrapping gifts so the lessons learned remain fresh in your mind. Learn how to wrap standard clothing gift boxes and recognize that such boxes can often be used to house oddly-shaped items.

HOW TO ORGANIZE OFFICE GIFT EXCHANGES Consider the overall office climate. Is yours a relaxed working environment, or is it ultra-formal? Allow the corporate culture to play a part in your gifting decisions. A gift that may be appropriate for a smaller, casual company may not be fitting for a large, rules-heavy corporation. Always let common sense prevail.

Natural Gifts Natural gifts are among the most environmentally friendly ones you can give. Foodies may appreciate an herb-growing kit that enables them to experiment with freshly picked basil or thyme in the kitchen, while tree-growing kits and flower seed packets are nice stocking stuffers for budding gardeners. Offer to purchase a living Christmas tree for a relative, so that he or she can plant the evergreen after the holidays have come and gone.

Beautiful Wood Doors Hom e designers often list the entry door as one of the m ost cost effective w ays to dress up the front of your hom e for “ w ow ” curb appeal. For hom eow ners w ho enjoy the beauty of w ood entry doors, options are now available to stand up to the harshest clim ates. Follow ing are three w ays to have the w ood door you w ant and to ensure it w ill look great for years. One option to consider is choosing w ood species that perform best in m oist conditions. Species that have been show n to have natural m oisture resistance include Douglas Fir, Black Locust, Nootka Cypress and Sapele M ahogany, am ong others. Som e m anufacturers offer w ater-resistant com posite blocks w ithin the bottom of the door, w here w ater can infiltrate. Doors also are available w ith full exterior cladding to protect them from rain and sun, w hile retaining the beauty of w ood inside the hom e. With any door, w hether m ade of w ood, steel or fiberglass, it is crucial to finish it for long-lasting protection. Doors are sold either factory finished or unfinished. If unfinished, the door m ust be finished by the door dealer, a contractor or the hom eow ner. M anufacturers provide instructions for finishing, and those steps typically m ust be follow ed to ensure w arranty requirem ents. Chief am ong these are to finish all six sides front, back and all edges. Finish should also be applied to the cut-outs for the handle and lock set, as w ell as any other openings, such as for m ail slots or pet doors. If the door is exposed to sun, it is generally better to use lighter color paints or stains as those absorb less heat from dam aging UV rays.

Dom Genova Owner, Genesee Valley Motors Avon

I would like to invite you to attend my seminar on Tuesday, December 13th at the Riviera Theatre in Geneseo. My friend, Jerry Elman, a fellow “ETHIE” recipient, and I are teaming up to give you the inside scoop on car matters with a seminar: “Steering Clear of Nonsense: How to Buy a Car and Have It Maintained Without Being Taken for a Ride.” Among other things, you will learn how to interpret “dealer to English‚” in new car advertising, how to avoid common car repair scams and you will have some fun in the process! And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better… The proceeds of your $5 admission fee will be passed on directly to the United Way of Livingston County to be matched by my donation of $10 per person attending. The details are below.....I hope you can come!

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/ GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. WISDOM TEETH Wisdom teeth, also known as “third molars,” are the last teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth. Unfortunately, they are the most common teeth to be ‘impacted’ or unable to fully erupt between the ages of 15-20, but can be seen earlier or appear much later in life. Impacted teeth are not able to erupt through the gum tissue fully or at all. This can be due to many reasons, including lack of room for the teeth (jaw growth), malposition of teeth or pathology. Nearly everyone has at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth. Why are wisdom teeth removed? There are many reasons wisdom teeth require removal; These include pain, swelling, infection, orthodontic treatment, periodontal disease, cavities, shifting of teeth, age and pathology (such as cyst development). If not removed, impacted wisdom teeth could lead to damage of adjacent teeth or cause infection, which is a very common reason that they are removed. If they do erupt fully, they often are difficult to clean and maintain, have bacteria associated with them which can lead to systemic infection and illness that can affect the heart and make management of other illnesses such as diabetes more difficult. If the teeth remain impacted as people age, other pathology can develop, such as cysts and tumors. Management of these situations is often compromised by anatomy and other medical concerns. Pain-free does not mean problem-free or pathology-free. If the wisdom teeth erupt fully, are hygienic and without pathology, proper follow up is in order with periodic exam and x-rays. What is the best age to remove wisdom teeth? Studies have consistently shown that removing wisdom teeth in the teen years is by far easier for patients. This is due to bone being softer, roots not being fully developed, better healing process, and an essentially uncomplicated or benign medical history. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Wisdom Teeth If you have been recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed, you will most likely be referred to an Oral Surgeon (OMS) for evaluation. OMS’s remove thousands of teeth, including wisdom teeth, every year. They perform hundreds of anesthetics for various reasons every year, have advanced training in surgical and anesthetic complications and employ a team that is certified in anesthetic care giving. There are various types of anesthetics that an OMS can administer in a very safe and controlled environment. Most often, as a result of their extensive training and experience, teeth removed by an OMS results in less pain, swelling, infection and other complications.

What to Look for in an Exercise Facility When a person decides to make a commitment to a healthier lifestyle, that decision is often accompanied by the decision to join a gym. Gyms can vary greatly. Some cater to specific activities, such as kick boxing or martial arts, while others are more general in scope, with weight training and cardiovascular equipment and access to personal trainers. Regardless of which type of facility an individual is hoping to join, certain external factors go a long way to dictating whether or not joining the gym will be a success. When looking for an exercise facility, the following items should be taken into consideration before signing an agreement. * Location * Fellow members * Cost: * Membership rights: * Hours of operation * Equipment

Portion Size Tricks The average portion size has tripled in recent years, which could be the reason why many people are overweight or obese. A healthier diet often starts with eating less. Here are some easy ways to remember just how much to eat when sitting down at the dinner table. * A portion of lean meat should be about 3 ounces, or the size of a palm. * A cup of mixed greens or vegetables is about the size of a baseball. * A medium piece of fruit is the size of a tennis ball. * A CD is the size of the pancake you should eat. * An ounce of hard cheese is the size of a tube of lipstick. * Keep burgers to the size of a mayonnaise jar top. * A tablespoon of oil is the size of one checker. *This information is intended for the sole purpose of fitting or selecting a hearing aid and is not a medical examination or audiological evaluation.

Make Sleep A Priority Getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night is critical for the body to produce hormones that trigger happiness.

Six tips to keep your new year’s resolution to lose w eight 1. Choose a parking spot aw ay from the mall entrance - Get a little exercise before you start shopping by choosing a parking space aw ay from the m all entrance. Even w alking just 15 m inutes at a tim e can im prove your health, both physically and m entally. 2. Say no to the elevator, w hen possible - Whether you are at w ork or the m all, choose the stairs instead of elevators or escalators. Rem em ber, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. If you have to go up to the eighth floor, consider taking one flight of stairs up and then pressing the elevator button. 3. Bring your w orkout indoors - During the w inter, som etim es it’s hard getting outdoors. Squats, leg lifts, and w alking lunges are great exercises to do indoors. For w eight training, use 10-pound dum bbells for bicep curls or tricep extensions, using a chair for support. 4. Just add w ater - Drinking fruit juice is an easy w ay to chug dow n calories. But if you love the fruity taste, cut dow n your serving by m ixing half the am ount of juice w ith an equal am ount of w ater - and say goodbye to 85 calories. 5. Dow nsize, don’t super-size, fast food meals - Opt for a sm all order of fries instead of a large one w ith your fast-food m eal (savings: over 300 calories) Another portion-control trick: Instead of placing serving bow ls of food in the m iddle of the fam ily dinner table, m easure individual portions in the kitchen. 6. Rew ard yourself for small changes - Losing any am ount of w eight is good, even if you don’t m eet your goal at first. Rew ard yourself w ith som ething that m akes sense to you, such as a new dress or pair of jeans you’ve w anted to get into.

“Goodwill is earned by many acts; it can be lost by one…”

~ Duncan Stuart Goodwill is priceless. It can exist between individuals, such as neighbors and friends. A company needs the goodwill of those with whom the company does business. When goodwill exists, each party regards the other in a friendly way. Every action is assumed to be motivated by good intentions. Goodwill is built gradually by a long series of transactions in an atmosphere of trust and friendship. A single act which betrays a confidence or takes an unfair advantage can shatter a relationship which has been built slowly over a long period. We believe that a funeral ceremony should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved in their first step towards adjustment to their loss. Call us first.

A MOST PERSONAL MATTER Grief has been described as a “dagger in the heart.” It poses the challenges of picking up the pieces and moving on without feeling as though you are betraying the memory of your beloved. The manner in which people deal with grief is influenced by culture, religion, and personality. Some people mourn publicly while others withdraw. Some search for meaning by asking what the life of the deceased meant or why death came at this particular time. Others never bother to ask these questions. Some people want to talk about how they feel, and many do not. All these approaches must be respected because, as much as grief is a universal experience, it is an individual matter. At KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, our compassionate staff understands that everyone experiences grief in their own way. We have been serving our community with care for many years. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities, conveniently located at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. WE ARE WHAT WE DO Make the world a better place through choices you make every day. Supporting business owners who provide you with goods and services ensures theyíll be there in the future. Who knows, you may even make a new friend! FAST FACT Independent, locally owned businesses return almost 80% of their revenue to their communities through city taxes, employees’ wages, and purchase of materials and supplies at other independent businesses. CHARM, ANYONE? Supporting local businesses ensures that your community will maintain its character. Polls show that distinctive and/or unique businesses or restaurants are most frequently cited as favorites. Be adventurous-seek out a one-of-a kind restaurant or shop. COMPETITION IS GOOD Supporting local businesses encourages entrepreneurship and healthy competition. This not only ensures a greater variety of products, but lower prices as well. SAVE MONEY Avoid costly shipping fees by shopping locally. If youíre able to combine errands, the cost of gasoline will generally be less than shipping costs. To beat the crowds, shop early in the day or later at night. HELP THE ENVIRONMENT Vibrant town centers reduce haphazard commercial sprawl and help preserve green space. Some cities now require new businesses to fill downtown vacancies before building on the outskirts of town. DID YOU KNOW? Local retailers may offer greater variety than big chains because they have the freedom to try new products that their customers might find appealing. When buyers for large chains determine what will be available to customers, choices may be limited to larger suppliers rather than new, innovative, or even local products.

Light Hill / Canandaigua Comfort Care Home opened nearly six months ago to care for our residents at their end-oflife. Prior to that, there were months of renovations at the hands of several extremely talented and skilled volunteer craftsmen. The home’s operation is only possible because of our incredible family of volunteers. They have come for different reasons from different backgrounds, willing to care for our residents with a caring heart. NOVEMBER is NATIONAL HOSPICE & PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH, the ideal time to express our deep gratitude for the love, care and compassion with which they fill our homes every day. In addition, there are many more who keep our place running just like any other home. Every day at Light

Hill is brighter because of our volunteers, the heart of our home.

From the man in the red truck and his dog Skipper: I’ve been taking my dog Skipper for rides in my truck for many years now. He looks forward to it and enjoys it! I’m sure it bothers many people, for he is barking all along the way. It was so encouraging and kind of the neighbors on Chick Rd. to write up a positive comment. Thank you for seeing the bright side of our story!

Wouldn’t it be nice at this time of THANKS GIVING…That we remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to have loving people and warm surroundings to our table of blessings. Perhaps instead of acrimonious debate, we could bring warm thoughts and good conversation to our table of gratitude. May it be so… Namaste… Randy Pawley

Article 22, Section 601 of the NY Agriculture and Markets Law: Leaving the scene of injury to certain animals without reporting. Any person operating a motor vehicle which shall strike and injure any horse, dog, cat or animal classified as cattle shall stop and endeavor to locate the owner or custodian of such animal or a police, peace or judicial officer of the vicinity, and take any other reasonable and appropriate action so that the animal may have necessary attention, and shall also promptly report the matter to such owner, custodian or officer (or if no one of such has been located, then to a police officer of some other nearby community). The remainder of S601 & S602 should be read by all-- covers the fines and being arrested for failure to comply. NO LAW TO KEEP CATS INSIDE.

It was great to see the Homecoming Parade. As I have done for SO many years, I took a plastic bag with me. This was PARTIALLY to collect the candies and gifts thrown by the participants. But after the parade is over, it is ALWAYS the same ~ I backtrack and go along the route to the beginning of the parade picking up the wrappers left behind by the litterbugs. It would be SO nice if one year, I went along, and found NO WRAPPERS left behind. I am sure the residents along the route would agree! As for the candy that is missed, think about this: I am sure the residents along the route appreciate the ants that the missed candy brings. PLEASE look around to be sure you haven’t missed any candy! You can ALWAYS donate what you don’t want. PLEASE also look around to see if you can pick up wrappers!
