• On March 20, 1823, Ned Buntline, the “dime millionaire” and discoverer of Buffalo Bill, is born in New York. More than any single writer, Buntline was responsible for creating a romanticized and misleading image of the American West. He once said, “I found that to make a living I must write ‘trash’ for the masses.”

Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

In three w ords I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on. - Robert Frost
Livonia/ Churchville: February 28, 2016 at age 92 years. Predeceased by his wife Jennie (Kiefer) Henry, daughter Patricia Henry, and siblings; Bill Henry, Howard Henry, and John Henry. Survived by daughters; Sharon (Edward) Peck of Honeoye Falls and Gail Henry of Greece. Siblings; Nellie Rossborough of Groveland, Arlene Moyer, and Gerry Henry both of Livonia. A POINT OF DEPARTURE Many people are reluctant to broach the subject of wills and funeral arrangements with their families. While everyone realizes that death is inevitable and estates must be settled, few want to have conversations about such stark realities. After all, how does one bring up such matters in conversation? Please allow us to suggest a way. Just as a lawyer can outline all the aspects that need to be addressed when drawing up a will, a funeral director can provide a preplanning guide that can serve as a starting point for end-of-life discussions. Using this as a guide, families can at least get a handle on the important matters that death introduces. These issues are best discussed sooner rather than later. Preplanning final arrangements is important since it ensures that those left behind will not be burdened with making those difficult decisions during their time of loss. It also allows individuals to predetermine individualized aspects of their commemoration. To arrange an initial, confidential consultation, call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME today at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living.” - Marcus Tulius Cicero

“A child educated only at school is an uneducated child...” ~ George Santayana It seems likely that professional educators subscribe without reservation to Santayana’s “thought.” Some parents seem to feel that the public schools are fully responsible for the education of their children, and they feel absolutely no responsibility for assisting. Indeed, the “support” from such homes may be negative. The schools have a child for a few hours each day. It is in the home where children learn some of the most important lessons. The parents who truly love their children will do all they can to supplement the school’s efforts, especially in the examples they set. We recognize the need of some families for a minimum services at minimum cost. We offer immediate disposition when such service best meets a family’s needs.

You take my life when you do take the means whereby I live. ~William Shakespeare
Me and My Partner By Patricia Cappotelli This is the story of the connection between me and a beautiful bay colt that I fell in love with and raised. Partner was born on March 16, 1991, with a large white blaze shaped like a backward question mark on his forehead. When he was a weanling, we purchased a little black colt so he would have a playmate to grow up with. Every day I would go to the stable on my lunch hour and hand feed him to be sure he would grow up big and strong and to make an everlasting bond between us. When he became a yearling and was turned out in a pasture The author and Partner, in happier times at a nearby farm, I went every day and brought him and his friend carrots. No matter where he was way out in went to my Facebook page and saw a video of the field, when I called out “Partner” he would come someone leading my former horse down the aisle of a killer pen in PA with this caption: “Hia running to the fence. That fall he went into training with my Partner, 24 years-old, needs donations to save him husband to become a race horse. My family had from being slaughtered.” I felt sick, wondering always been in the horse racing business, but I had where he had been all these years and why anyone never really learned how to harness them. Now that would mistreat this gentle, innocent animal. Tears I had my own horse that I trusted completely, I ran down my face as I messaged a girl I had just wanted to be his handler at the track. I learned how met who founded ROC Standardbred to find to harness him and went to the tracks with him “after racing” homes for Standardbreds. She when he raced. Unfortunately, after several years of immediately went into action, along with racing he broke a coffin bone in a race. This is a very LifeHorse, soliciting money to bail Partner out of serious injury that requires at least a year’s stall rest the pen. I also posted on my Facebook page that to heal; even then there is no guarantee of a return help was needed. The next morning I received a call telling me to racing. Since we do not own a farm of our own and that enough money had been raised and Hia stabling space was limited, my husband made the Partner was on his way to Breezy Hill Stables in business decision to sell Partner. I was heartbroken Maryland. I was told a dear friend of mine put up and couldn’t even go to the stable to say goodbye to all of the remaining money to save him. Since then, I have seen pictures of Partner at him. I’m sure he was confused as to why I left him, but I never forgot him and kept his picture on the the rescue stable and was happy to see he was with wall (where it still is today). Time passed and a another black horse like the one he originally grew fellow horseman at the track told us that Partner up with. Life takes strange turns, sometimes good had a good home. This made me very happy. and sometimes bad. I hope Partner gets to live However, a year or so later he told us that Partner peacefully the rest of his life, and if he is anywhere had died after a fencing accident. As years went by, nearby I would love to visit him one more time. I whenever horse stories were discussed I always wonder what he would say to me if he could talk, but I know I would say to him “I am so sorry that talked about my deceased friend. Imagine my complete shock when I recently I couldn’t protect you from such a terrible life.”

THE BIBLE SAYS “Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?” ( Job 4:17) “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:” (Isaiah 55:6) “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15) “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
On February 16, a snowstorm made roads icy and difficult to travel. On my way back home from a doctor’s appointment, I was unable to stop my car at the railroad crossing and slid into a snowdrift. My car was very close to the crossing gate. When the gates came down, they hit my car and went back up. I could not move the car forward or back. The Corfu Police responded when I called 911. Friends and neighbors on Snipery Road came to help. Within an hour, my car was pushed out of the snow and I was safe at home. Thank you to everyone who came to help, especially my neighbor Adam who was the first to come to my aid and my daughter Rachel who tried her best to shovel me out. Did You Know? While many in North America are aware of home price, some might be surprised to learn just how expensive the continent’s most expensive homes are. According to Forbes.com, the most expensive home in North America is in the ritzy resort town of Bridgehampton, NY, which is home to a 25,000 square-foot home valued at $75 million. The property includes 60 acres of waterfront farmland as well as a U.S. Golf Association-rated golf course. To get to the second most expensive home in North America, one need not travel very far from No. 1. The $70 million triplex penthouse at the Pierre in NYC encompasses the hotel’s top three floors and boasts double reception rooms and a paneled library. For those who can’t afford the whole thing, the property is also available in two parts, at $11 million and $59 million. The third most expensive property is on the West Coast. Located in Malibu, Calif., No. 3 on the list is a $65 million gated compound on a private bluff that covers 7 acres ofland. Lake Tahoe is home to the fourth most expensive North American property. Valued at $60 million, Sierra Star in Nevada’s Incline Village is only 10 years old but includes an 11,000 square-foot main home and two large guesthouses, for a total of 18 bedrooms. FH109845

Eating right can improve quality of life Legend states that on April 2, 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León was the first European to discover modern-day Florida when he traveled on a quest for the mythical “Fountain of Youth.” While modern science has proven that there is no mystical fountain or body of water that can reverse or slow down the aging process, there are many steps people can take to age well and prolong their lives. Eating the right foods is one way to age well. According to Ralph Felder, M.D., Ph.D., coauthor of “The Bonus Years Diet,” reversing the aging process internally is more difficult than outward cosmetic changes. But the right foods can go a long way toward increasing both life expectancy and quality of life. Those who want to employ diet to increase their life expectancy may want to start adding more of the following foods to their breakfast, lunch and dinner plates. · Broccoli, grapes and salad: According to Health magazine, researchers have found that compounds in these three foods boast extra life-extending benefits. · Berries: In addition to their abundance of antioxidants, berries have other benefits. A 2012 study from Harvard University found that at least one serving of blueberries or two servings of strawberries each week may reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults. · Fruits and vegetables: Produce is good for the body because it’s low in calories and high in fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. Numerous studies have indicated that diets plentiful in fruits and vegetables help people maintain a

healthy weight and protect against cardiovascular disease. · Whole grains: Whole grains pack a lot of nutrition into a low-calorie food. Whole grains help protect against type 2 diabetes, and researchers at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center found study participants whose diets included plenty of whole grains and fruit cut their heart disease risk by almost half compared to those whose diets favored meat and fatty foods. · Red wine: A glass a day for women and no more than two glasses daily for men can be beneficial. Moderate consumption of red wine has been shown to slow age-related declines in cardiovascular function, according to the American Heart Association. · Fiber: Increase your fiber intake for a longer life. Research from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that the more fiber you include in your diet, the lower your risk of coronary heart disease. The daily recommendation is 25 to 35 grams. While there may be no such thing as the fountain of youth, a healthy diet can help men and women prolong their lives.

FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 2016
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is Prostate to Blame for Sluggish Bladder? DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion on enlarged prostate. My primary-care doctor sent me for a blood test and said my PSA number was too high, then sent me to a urologist. He said my bladder is not emptying and that I am having urine retention in the bladder. After one week of medication (Rapaflo), I had a catheter inserted for another week. He measured the urine in the bladder, and it was 880 ml. Now he is suggesting surgery. Is he going too fast? What are your thoughts on the procedure and side effects? Will this correct the problem? -- D.G.
Construction is complete and we are moving into our new space!
ANSWER: The bladder is drained via a tube called the urethra, and in men, the urethra runs right through the middle of the prostate. As men get older, the prostate commonly enlarges, and this can cause resistance to flow. The symptoms can range from mildly annoying to complete obstruction. Complete obstruction is an emergency, since the kidneys will fail within a few days of being unable to drain urine at all. But the obstruction does not need to be complete in order to cause kidney damage. It’s the high pressure in the urethra, bladder and ureters (the tubes that allow urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder) that causes kidney damage. Placing a catheter allows the urine to drain at low pressure if the problem is in the urethra.
G rand O pening C om ing S oon DON’T FORGET! Dr. Washburn’s patients will be seen by Dr. Doaga at this new location.
Normal bladder capacity is between 300-400 ml. At 880 ml, you would experience very abnormal bladder drainage and would be at high risk for ongoing kidney damage. Thus, I completely agree with your urologist that something, probably surgical, needs to be done quickly. It’s not completely clear to me whether your inability to drain the bladder is due to obstruction from enlarged prostate, even though an elevated PSA suggests that this might be the case. It also is possible that there is something wrong with the nerves that go to or from the bladder. I suspect your urologist has done additional bladder tests to help sort this out. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement as well as cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have weaned off Zoloft, and I noticed a swelling of my fingers -- I can’t get my rings on. Do you think it is related? -- E.P. ANSWER: Discontinuing an antidepressant such as sertraline (Zoloft) certainly can cause symptoms. Dizziness, fatigue, muscle aches, anxiety and irritability are common. It happens more frequently if the drug is suddenly stopped versus tapered down over weeks. Paroxitine (Paxil) seems to have the highest incidence of symptoms on stopping. However, I haven’t seen swelling as a result of stopping sertraline. It may be related, but I doubt it. Is it possible that you are consuming more salt? That’s the most common reason for increased fluid in the fingers over a short time. I would see your doctor if it doesn’t go away in a week or so. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 2-17 was Random Act of Kindness Day. I didn’t know. Thank you, Mr. Phone Serviceman for helping me get to the end of my driveway on Wednesday 217. I was shoveling; you came to fix a phone in house. Then came out, picked up a shovel and helped me get to the road in the last 1/3 of driveway. We talked and shoveled together. You made my day proving that chivalry is NOT dead. Thank you far more than you will know.
few. They are always professional, courteous, prompt, and attentive to the needs of others. They give back to the community in so many ways. They give a sense of security to those who have to call 911 in the night for help, knowing that they will be at your home in a very short time, assisting you during some medical crisis. Thank you all! The Italian Red Head and family in Hamlin
As of late, paramedics and volunteers/ the ambulance, have been called to our home for our son who had back surgery. Every one of these individuals are WONDERFUL and special people who go out of their way to respond to the needs of others. My family and I are truly appreciative of them, and can’t thank them enough. Andrew, Kyle, John, Kristina Alport, to name a
I would like to give a HUGE thank you to the guy in the tow truck who saw me stuck on Bright/ Hen TL road during that snow storm on Tuesday and stopped to pull out my tractor trailer! Also, to all the police, ambulance, fire department, tow companies and state/local plow companies who took the time to help everyone that day. THANK YOU! I want to thank Kirstin Flass and the staff at the Rush Library for all they do to make the library such an inviting place. The fireplace, sitting area, artwork and whimsical “Yarnstorming” pieces are just a few examples.
found! My neighbor and I are disabled and as our neighbors helped each other dig out, they left us snowed in. No emergency personnel could have made it to our house if we needed help. So where were these fine, good Samaritans????
Yes, the ambulance is there for medical purposes and not personal use. The reason for the ambulance to be taken on a “food run” is because if they receive an emergency call, they will immediately have access to the ambulance. If their “own transportation” is used, this will delay the emergency more. That being said, these volunteers have the right to eat a lunch or pick up food, don’t you eat? These volunteers you are complaining about, save lives on a daily basis. Give them a break! I find it funny that on the news the day following the big snow storm (2-1516) they showed how wonderful people are in (local town) helping each other out. Where were people like that in my neighborhood in (local town)? Nowhere to be
Please, if you see a tow truck, police car, fire truck, ambulance, or highway truck with its lights flashing, MOVE OVER or slow down. Give us room to work on the highway. There are too many close calls. Every six days a Tow truck operator is hit or even killed, due to motorists not moving over or slowing down. We are begging you - PLEASE GIVE US ROOM TO WORK. We don’t speed past your office, so don’t speed past ours. We have family, too, that we would like to go home to. (Editor’s note, It’s the law) Just think before you go vote on Election Day. If you’re going to vote for free education (higher taxes) remember this country has had “free education” for many years it’s called the GI bill. Remember everything has a price including FREEDOM. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
