A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD. “Dr. Popelka should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.” Dr. Popelka graduated from University of Rochester in 2005 and currently practices dentistry in Canandaigua. He and his wife, Anna, have 3 children, Giannina, Adriano, and Marcello.

Things to think about while planning a eulogy * Some churches do not allow eulogies during a church service. Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of. * Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception. * If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed. * If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief.

Call us: 585-226-8111 Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

RITES AND CUSTOMS “In any contest between power and patience, bet on patience.....” ~ W.B Prescott Patience is indeed a virtue. “All things come to he who waits” is an old adage that few will dispute. It’s exciting to watch sheer power in action…the forces of nature, for example, can be awesome. But it is the patient, gentle rain rather than the almighty hurricane that makes things grow. The most powerful tyrants of history have eventually fallen to more patient forces of moderation. And, although few of us will ever wield impressive power, every one of us is capable of being patient…a characteristic everyone can, and should, develop. Our years of experience and our deep understanding of human needs enables us to serve most effectively. Ask us about the advantages of pre-planning funerals, well in advance of need.

Many death rites and customs date back centuries and have evolved from a desire to appease the spirits surrounding the dead. For instance, the custom of closing the eyes of the dead comes from a desire to shut a “window” between the living world and the spirit world. Pulling a sheet over the deceased comes from a belief that the spirit of the dead escaped through the mouth. During the 19th century, in both Europe and the United States, the dead were carried from their home feet first to prevent the deceased from looking back into the house and drawing another member of the household with him or her. These practices were thought to protect the living from death. Regardless of the death rites and customs that you embrace, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here to honor your requests. No detail is too large or too small for us to handle. To arrange an initial, confidential consultation, contact us today at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to visit our conveniently located facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY, where we serve our communities with pride. PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Avoid placing the tree near heaters or drafty windows. Many people know that placing a live tree near a potentially hot heating vent poses a fire hazard. But doing so also can dry out the tree, decreasing the chances it will make it through the season. Placing the tree near drafty windows also can dry out the tree, so try to find a spot in your home with a consistent temperature.

BE SMART WHEN SHOPPING ON YOUR SMARTPHONE Browse but don’t buy. Shoppers who are especially concerned about smartphone security may want to use apps and their smartphone’s Internet connections to browse rather than buy. Avoid logging into apps or websites when using your smartphone, instead browsing deals and jotting them down on the phone’s notes app. You can then make purchases once you gain access to a secure network, such as the one at your home or office.

2. Beat egg whites, cream of tartar, coconut, almond and vanilla extracts, and salt in a large bowl with an electric mixer on mediumhigh speed until combined. Gradually beat in sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating until stiff, shiny peaks form, 6 to 8 minutes. 3. Sift cocoa over the mixture and gently fold together with a rubber spatula until combined. 4. Spoon the meringue into a gallon-size sealable bag (or pastry bag fitted with a 1/2-inch tip). Seal the bag, pressing out as much air as possible. Cut a 1/2-inch hole in one corner of the bag. Pipe the meringue into 2-inch circles, about 1 inch apart, on the prepared baking sheets. 5. Bake on the upper and lower racks for 50 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the meringues stand in the oven with the door closed until completely dry, about 11/2 hours. 6. Melt semisweet and white chocolate (see Tips & Techniques) and drizzle or pipe onto the cooled meringues. Let stand until it sets.

Individuals turn out sweet treats left and right, and these treats are often gobbled up by appreciative holiday revelers. Although some people have mastered baked goods, others can benefit from a few tricks of the trade. Utilize these tips to make holiday baking that much easier. • Overworked cookie dough may result in dry cookies. Try not to handle dough more than is necessary to roll it out to desired thickness. When rolling the dough, put it between two pieces of waxed paper to reduce flour usage on the rolling pin. • When baking brownies or other bar-type cookies, line the inside of the pan with greased aluminum foil. This way you can lift out the dessert and cut it neatly instead of risking sticking.

• The same technique can be used when baking cookies. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper and bake as directed. The cookies should slide right off when done, and you won’t have messy pans to wash afterward. • Double-check your oven temperature with a reliable thermometer to make sure it is accurate. This will help you bake more efficiently and adjust the time or temperature accordingly. • Many cookie doughs can be refrigerated or even frozen, so you can make a big batch and then spread out your baking as needed throughout the season.

Four Inducted into Fairport’s Education Wall of Distinction By Christina Lewis Gursslin The Fairport Central School District honored four new members to its Education Wall of Distinction in an induction ceremony held on November 16th at Fairport High School. The inductees, who were selected based on their lasting positive impact on the educational process for Fairport students, are Dave Dunn, Robert Longhouse, Linda Northrup and Mark Trawitz.

Go Figure!

Dave Dunn has been doing what is best for students in his role as both teacher and administrator at Martha Brown Middle School for 40 years. He is in his 22nd year as principal and previously taught mathematics for 18 years. He can be seen in the bus loop, the hallways or cafeterias at any time during the day interacting with students, staff and parents. He leads by example and his relationship with staff is his most important asset. He holds a monthly principal’s forum offering parents an opportunity to come together and discuss topics pertaining to middle school students. Robert Longhouse was a dedicated physical education teacher for Fairport for over 30 years teaching at the middle and high school level. He has positively impacted the lives of thousands of students as well as student-athletes in his additional role as an athletic coach for girls’ soccer and softball and boys’ basketball. Although retired from teaching, he continues to motivate and inspire student athletes in his current role as girls’ soccer coach. Linda Northrup has been inspiring students in her food service career at Fairport since 1988 and is known as “Lunch Lady Linda.” She began her career as a food service helper at Brooks Hill, and has also held the titles of Fairport High School baker and assistant cook manager at Jefferson Avenue and Fairport High School before becoming the cook manager at Jefferson Avenue in 2003, where she is today. She has received recognition and many awards for her service to Fairport and is best known for her cheerfully decorated kitchen and themed months when she and her team wear costumes that bring smiles to the faces of students and adults alike. Mark Trawitz is a dedicated educator who has been making lasting impressions on his students and colleagues since 1992, having taught at both Martha Brown and Johanna Perrin Middle Schools. He is active in his current role as English teacher at Johanna Perrin and serves on many committees in an effort to improve student learning in Fairport. He has also served as lead English teacher and volunteered for and organized many events with a keen understanding of what matters to students.

Congratulations to this year’s inductees!

What is it that makes a family vacation so great? Here are five ingredients that are sure to make your trip memorable for everyone: • Get active together. Maybe it’s seeing the area you’re visiting by bicycle or horseback. Or perhaps there’s a theme park nearby where you can all enjoy a thrill. • Give everyone the star treatment. Before you leave, make sure to ask all family members what types of things they’d like to do during your vacation and plan so everyone is considered. • Get outside. One of the best ways to enjoy a beautiful destination is to explore its natural areas. Taking a hike with the whole family can expose your children to the wonders of the outdoors, and they’re sure to enjoy a natural experience that is different to what they would see at home. Also, a day at the beach is sure to be a hit with everyone. • Make time for alone time. If you’re spending a whole week together, each family member will want some time for themselves to explore their own interests. Allow time for afternoon relaxation and consider designating one day for individual activity. • Make meals special. Vacation is a great time to try new foods together. Whether you’re grilling at your cabin, or dining at a familyfriendly establishment, encourage family members to branch out from their normal eating habits. If your vacation is long enough, let each family member have a night to pick what the family should do for dinner.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT While new homes are being built to be more energy efficient than ever before, thanks to a growing green building movement and increasingly strict building codes, the age of existing dwellings continues to present challenges. More than 40 percent of the housing stock in the United States was built before 1969 and simply wouldn’t stand up to today’s standards. Yet, much can be done to help homeowners improve their building envelope to reduce energy use and increase efficiency. Improving your home’s energy efficiency can help save money, keep you more comfortable, reduce pollution, and prevent global warming.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Six months ago, I noticed a “bald spot” on my right cheek. It is round and about the size of a 50-cent piece. I’ve never had this problem before, even though I am going bald. I am generally healthy. I am concerned that this might be an infection or cancer. There is no itching, redness or discoloration of any sort. Can you address this issue? I am worried that it will spread, and I want to know if it will grow back. -- Anon. ANSWER: This sounds very much like alopecia areata, which usually is found on the scalp, but can be in any area of the body with hair. It probably is an auto-immune disorder, and it happens frequently in people with autoimmune thyroid disease, such as Hashimoto’s or Grave’s disease. People with alopecia areata should get screened for thyroid disease. It usually starts in people under 30. About half of people will have their hair regrow within a year. If the skin otherwise looks completely normal, it is very unlikely to be a cancer or infection. A dermatologist should be able to confirm the diagnosis. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there any type of corrective surgery for eye “floaters”? -- J.W. ANSWER: Floaters are bits of cellular debris that float inside the vitreous humor in the eye. The eye has no way of getting rid of these, normally. Most people are not bothered by them, and they do not need to be treated unless they are interfering with vision. However, if they do affect vision or are very bothersome, there are surgical techniques developed to deal with them. I’ve had readers write in that they had treatment with laser or with vitrectomy. At least one ophthalmologist of one of my readers has a specialty practice just treating floaters. The sudden appearance of floaters can be a sign of serious disease, especially a detached retina; this should be evaluated immediately, especially if any changes in vision are present. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: For two to three months, I have been taking 17 grams of polyethylene glycol mixed in 8 ounces of water three times a week. Finally, I have found something that is effective in relieving my lifelong chronic constipation problem. In the past two months, however, I have lost approximately 10 pounds and at 5 feet, 4 1/2 inches tall, I now weigh 100 pounds. Could the weight loss be related to the use of the polyethylene glycol? -- P.D.M. ANSWER: Polyethylene glycol (Miralax and others) is a nonabsorbable, inert substance that carries water with it as it goes through your digestive tract. This gives the stool more moisture and makes it easier to pass. It is considered very safe. I don’t think that it is responsible for 10 pounds of weight loss. I would be more concerned about an underlying medical issue, especially one that might cause constipation, such as thyroid disease. I also would be sure you have had a recent colonoscopy. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. WISDOM TEETH Wisdom teeth, also known as “third molars,” are the last teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth. Unfortunately, they are the most common teeth to be ‘impacted’ or unable to fully erupt between the ages of 15-20, but can be seen earlier or appear much later in life. Impacted teeth are not able to erupt through the gum tissue fully or at all. This can be due to many reasons, including lack of room for the teeth (jaw growth), malposition of teeth or pathology. Nearly everyone has at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth. Why are wisdom teeth removed? There are many reasons wisdom teeth require removal; These include pain, swelling, infection, orthodontic treatment, periodontal disease, cavities, shifting of teeth, age and pathology (such as cyst development). If not removed, impacted wisdom teeth could lead to damage of adjacent teeth or cause infection, which is a very common reason that they are removed. If they do erupt fully, they often are difficult to clean and maintain, have bacteria associated with them which can lead to systemic infection and illness that can affect the heart and make management of other illnesses such as diabetes more difficult. If the teeth remain impacted as people age, other pathology can develop, such as cysts and tumors. Management of these situations is often compromised by anatomy and other medical concerns. Pain-free does not mean problem-free or pathology-free. If the wisdom teeth erupt fully, are hygienic and without pathology, proper follow up is in order with periodic exam and x-rays. What is the best age to remove wisdom teeth? Studies have consistently shown that removing wisdom teeth in the teen years is by far easier for patients. This is due to bone being softer, roots not being fully developed, better healing process, and an essentially uncomplicated or benign medical history. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Wisdom Teeth If you have been recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed, you will most likely be referred to an Oral Surgeon (OMS) for evaluation. OMS’s remove thousands of teeth, including wisdom teeth, every year. They perform hundreds of anesthetics for various reasons every year, have advanced training in surgical and anesthetic complications and employ a team that is certified in anesthetic care giving. There are various types of anesthetics that an OMS can administer in a very safe and controlled environment. Most often, as a result of their extensive training and experience, teeth removed by an OMS results in less pain, swelling, infection and other complications.

Stick to a sleep schedule. Make sure that you go to bed and get up at roughly the same time each day, even on weekends. Having a consistent sleep pattern helps regulate your body’s sleep-wake cycle, helping you to sleep better at night. If you have trouble falling asleep within the first 20 minutes or so of going to bed, that’s okay - simply go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel tired. Agonizing over falling asleep will only make it tougher for you to get the rest you need.

I am expressing my deep appreciation to the people who helped me at the time of my auto accident in Geneseo in the early evening of October 31, especially the fellow who was able to release my seat belt and to help extricate me from my overturned vehicle. Thanks to Rebecca and Tom, Geneseo EMS Medical Technicians, who attended me during the transit to UR Medicine, Strong Memorial Hospital, and to the ambulance driver. My appreciation to all the Doctors, Nurses and Medical Technicians thru Dr. Eric Davis’ supervision at Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department. A thank you to Geneseo Police Officer, Benjamin Swanson, who participated in my extrication from my vehicle, and helped in getting me onto the ambulance stretcher and into the ambulance. I thank all of you in my prayers.

The staff at Suburban Animal Hospital has always been wonderful but our family was truly blessed by them when we had to make the difficult decision to euthanize our dog Grace who was suffering from stage 4 lymphoma. Even though they had a full evening schedule they accommodated us and allowed us all the time we needed to say goodbye. Their compassion made a difficult situation easier. When we picked up Grace’s ashes, not only were they in a decorative box, but we also received a cast of her paw print. Our family also received a nice sympathy card from the vet who treated her. In addition to all this they made a donation in Grace’s memory to Rochester Hope for Pets. A heartfelt thank you to Suburban Animal Hospital and their staff. I would like to thank all the restaurant and businesses that took the time to give free meals and items to our veterans. They certainly deserve it and it is wonderful that you took the time to show them how much they are loved.

My husband & I were at one of the local pizza places in our town eating our dinner. When we came out about a half hour later, we noticed that our vehicle had been keyed from the driver’s door all around to & including the back. We filed a police report but since the cameras didn’t pick up your image there is nothing we can do except to pay the deductible of $500.00 so that our vehicle gets fixed. We are seniors on a fixed income so to have to spend the above amount because of your malicious act makes us angry. Who do you think you are & what gives you the right to damage property that doesn’t belong to you? We know you are a mean person who took out your frustrations on someone who you don’t know. Do the right thing & own up to your crime. What happens when Wi-Fi is down? Or electricity is out? It becomes nothing more than a bunch of techno-garbage

with no life. The best thing to do, to maintain a desired, good quality lifestyle, if that is what you want, is to have a good old-fashioned back-up plan. Like, for ex. a landline phone that doesn’t rely on cell towers or satellite signals to be used. And it isn’t just communication when technology goes down; it’s some of the cars/ banking, etc., too. So many things that rely solely on technology have made humans less selfsufficient and because of that, vulnerable to govt. corruption and terrorism, too. So, the best way is to re-learn how to be selfsufficient without technology, and that will set you free. Good Luck.

This is for the lady who walks in the morning on a road with no street lights or sidewalks. Please get a reflective vest or shirt to wear on your walks! Gray or blue colors don’t stand out in the early morning light and it will be getting darker soon! You could even carry a flashlight to see you better! It would really ruin yours and someone’s day if you got hit. Reflective vests don’t cost much, it could save your life!

Great gifts for seniors Every holiday shopper ends up with at least one loved one on their shopping list who they can’t seem to find anything for. Some people seem to have it all, while others may be less than forthcoming with regard to items they may need or want. Many seniors tend to fall into the latter category. Shopping for holiday gifts for seniors can be difficult if shoppers don’t know what seniors want. But the following are a handful of gift ideas that might make this holiday season that much more special for seniors. Books A 2015 survey from the Pew Research Center found that 69 percent of adults age 65 and over acknowledged reading at least one book in the previous 12 months. That makes books a good bet for shoppers who don’t know what to get their 65-and-over loved ones this holiday season. But shoppers might want to opt for more traditional print books rather than e-books, as the survey found that only 15 percent of readers age 65 and over had read an e-book in the previous 12 months. Gym membership According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, more than 80 percent of adults do not meet the guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities. That can be especially troubling for seniors, who are at greater risk for osteoporosis, a medical condition in which age-related tissue loss contributes to brittle, fragile bones. Physical activity, including muscle-strengthening activities like weight training, can help combat osteoporosis. Family members stuck on what to get aging loved ones may want to

consider gifting a membership to a local gym. Many gyms offer heavily discounted memberships to seniors, and such gyms may even offer senior fitness classes at no additional cost. Travel gifts Many retirees love to travel, but not every senior has the means to take off for parts unknown. A 2013 survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® found that 25 percent of retirees admitted they wished they would have saved more for retirement travel. Holiday shoppers can light up seniors’ smiles by gifting travel gifts this holiday season. One idea is to transfer airline miles to an elderly loved one so he or she can get a free or discounted flight. If that’s not a possibility, some new luggage or a Global Hotel CardTM sponsored by Orbitz®, a gift card that can be redeemed at 70,000 hotels across the globe, is sure to please. Family time Shoppers who are especially stuck on what to get seniors for Christmas can just resolve to spend more time with their elderly loved ones. Many seniors genuinely have everything they need, and such men and women may only want to spend more time with their children and grandchildren. Make a New Year’s resolution to spend more time with the special seniors in your life if the perfect gift is eluding you.
