Cold w eather can cause starting problem s in diesel vehicles because the fuel tends to gel. One w ay to com bat gelling is to use an anti-gelling additive. Using an additive can im prove engine start up in cold w eather, im prove cold flow by preventing gelling and w ill clean deposits from fuel injectors, com bustion cham bers, intake valves and piston crow ns. It’s easy to forget that basic m aintenance can prevent expensive repairs. Change your fuel filter. Using a dirty fuel filter can cause w ax crystals to collect, cutting off the fuel. Change your m otor oil and your oil filter. Depending on the clim ate w here you live, consider changing the viscosity of your oil to help flow during the cold w inter m onths. Engine dam age can occur if the m otor oil is too thick due to the cold and the flow is restricted to the engine. You should check your ow ner’s m anual for the recom m ended viscosity for w inter tem peratures.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Jan. 30, 1948, Mohandas Gandhi, the world’s chief advocate of non-violence, is assassinated in New Delhi, India. Assassin Nathuram Godse was hanged in 1949 against the wishes of Gandhi’s sons, who argued that the execution stood against everything Gandhi believed in.

Renovations for senior safety As adults approach their golden years, the homes they once thought of as sanctuaries can become unsafe. Families wrestle with the decision to keep parents and grandparents in their homes or move them into assisted living facilities or other senior residences. Modifying seniors’ homes to make them safer is another option. The National Institute on Aging says that families may be able to have a senior stay at home by helping older relatives remain independent but safe. The following are a few ways to do just that. • Remove fall hazards. The NIA reports that six out of 10 falls happen at home, where people spend the most time and fail to think about their safety. Seniors who want to be independent may overestimate their physical abilities. Because falls can be so dangerous, leading to cuts, abrasions, broken bones, and more, seniors and their families must take steps to prevent falls in homes. Improve lighting, especially at night when sight may become diminished. Install hand rails and grab bars where possible. Pick up clutter and remove tripping hazards, such as slippery rugs or electric cords. Install an electric stair climbing seat to make traversing stairs less risky. • Improve visibility and ability to communicate. Vision loss may accompany aging, but technology can help mitigate such losses. Use big-button phones, remote controls and even keyboards so seniors can keep in touch. Voice-activated thermostats or smart home technology also can make it easier for seniors to voice their needs. • Modify fixtures and other features. Dexterity may wane with age, and arthritis can make grasping or turning doorknobs and faucets more challenging. Take inventory of areas of the home that present the biggest obstacles to seniors.

Replace knobs in the shower or on faucets with lever handles, which are easier to maneuver. Install new cabinets and doors that freely glide open and self-close. Replace toggle light switches with easier paddle-type switches that can be pushed with a hand or even arm. Motion-sensor lights also can be handy. Push-button oven controls may make cooking easier. • Prepare for medical emergencies. Invest in medical alert systems, such as necklaces or bracelets, that can be used to contact police or emergency medical personnel directly. Make phones available in commonly used rooms in the home, such as bedrooms, the living room, bathrooms, and the kitchen. • Install ramps and nonslip flooring. Ramps can make it easier to reach the front door or cross over elevated doorway thresholds. Nonslip flooring also can prevent falls around the house, offering more traction for feet, walkers or canes. • Repair cracks in walkways and driveways. Safety should also extend to the outdoors. Be sure to repair cracks or uneven pavement. Replace loose patio blocks or bricks with a more stable design or with concrete or asphalt. While outdoors, trim back bushes and make sure there are no tripping hazards outside as well. A few modifications can make it possible for seniors to live comfortably in their homes for many years.

Livingston County Needs Assessment Survey to Help Fight Poverty Poverty has become an increasing problem for our nation in recent years and Livingston County is no exception. According to a recent study by the Livingston County Planning Department, the county poverty rate has risen 1.4% in the past two years to 14.8%. Although the county poverty rate is below the state poverty rate of 15.9%, it is still a problem that our community must face. The Livingston County Community Initiatives Council (CIC) was created to combat this problem with the goal of enabling low-income persons to attain the skills, knowledge, and motivations to help them secure the opportunities needed for selfsufficiency. The council consists of representatives from three sectors of the community (public, private and low-income) and oversees the administration of the Community Service Development Block Grant funding that is allocated to diverse social agencies around the county. Examples of programs provided through this funding are Emergency Assistance through Catholic Charities and the Domestic Violence and Homeless Shelter offered through Chances and Changes. Every three years the CIC is tasked with performing a comprehensive assessment of Livingston County residents to determine the priority of need in the community. The CIC is currently seeking input from the community regarding programs and services needed for those living in poverty. A survey has been created in order

Dr. Robert B. Campbell January 6, 2016 Geneseo: January 6, 2016 at age 59 years. Predeceased by his father Robert Campbell. Survived by his wife of 36 years, Kathy Campbell and children; Charity Campbell of Geneseo, Melody (Nathan) Ball of Geneseo, Robert Campbell of VA, and Josiah Campbell of VA; grandchildren, Jaeden, Johana, Levi, and Luke Ball; mother, Carole Brown of TX; siblings, Cindy Jenson, Sheila (Eddy) Hall, Cathy Volk, and Kari Beth. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Dr. Bob Campbell is affectionately known by many as, “PB”, which was short for Pastor Bob. He is truly the best man, husband and friend someone could ask for. He was the father of four children and four grandchildren whom he absolutely adored. He was the best father and grandfather ever. Pastor Bob served in the Marine Corp from 1974-1979. He has authored 13 books, several teaching manuals and recorded numerous audio teaching series. His favorite verse was Luke 10:19, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” He was a passionate reader and learner and continuously researched books, articles and publications and had earned his Doctorate Degree. He was currently working on a book which discussed revolutionary findings concerning the human brain. In 1993 Bob and his wife Kathy planted Harvest International Family Church in Geneseo, NY. Through their vision and pioneering spirit, it grew from a small store front church to a regional gathering place reaching nations. Bob loved to pastor the Harvest family. He always felt he had the best people the Lord could have given him. From being willing to use outside portable bathrooms while constructing the new building to having Live Stream set up to broadcast the ministry to the world, the people he pastored got behind his vision and helped work to make it happen. Pastor Bob was always a visionary and dreamer and The Lord gave him a group of warriors to help him along! Bob was relentless in his pursuit of Biblical Truth and no matter what the cost, he was committed to seeing people set free in all aspects of life. He particularly had revelation in the area of women in ministry and has helped to pioneer this truth and see it established in the church. He firmly believed that people can be anything God calls them to be and that there is no longer male and female but we are all one in Christ, and He practiced this belief. He never was apologetic about going against the tide in areas of Biblical worldview and freedoms because he was desperate to see God’s people operate in the fullness of His Word. Bob´s desire was to please his Father in Heaven and to see the Kingdom of God established. In addition to his overseeing Harvest International Church, Bob started numerous ministries to include Ignited Ministries, One by One, Pool of Bethesda, and The DC Initiative. Through HIFC and these ministries, Bob walked out his passion for and calling to the nations and traveled to China, Ghana, Uganda, India, Hong Kong, Jamaica and numerous cities throughout the United States. Ignited Ministries has had impact in many regions, encouraging disciples of Jesus to be ignited and reignited with a deep love for Jesus and a willingness to do whatever God calls us to for His glory. Through One by One, orphans from India and Uganda are clothed, housed, educated and fed. The Pool of Bethesda is a school of healing that Bob developed which has seen countless people healed physically, spiritually and emotionally. The DC Initiative has seen great impact in our Nation’s capital and the Kingdom of God has advanced into the halls of government. PB’s vision was far and wide and leaves lots of work to be done in his stead. A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, January 10th, at 3pm at Harvest International Family Church, 4647 Reservoir Road, Geneseo. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Ignited Ministries, 4647 Reservoir Road, Geneseo, NY 14454. Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

“A man can stand a lot as long as he can stand himself.....”
~ Axel Munthe Into every life some rain must fall. We all suffer adversities of various kinds. We can meet these misfortunes with courage and fortitude or we can grovel in self-pity and try to find an easy way out, even if it means dodging our responsibilities. Mere adversity never killed anyone. We live through it and usually, when the problem is finally resolved, it turns out to have been less awful than we imagined. We can stand a great deal if we are proud of the way we do it. Families of all faiths are assured of perfectly appropriate services when they place their trust in us. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds. When the need arises, call us first.

ENDURING LOSS
O’Connell-Dougherty Funeral Home
When one first learns about the death of someone close, it is a natural reaction to experience shock. In many ways, the shock and denial felt in the wake of this emotional trauma is very similar to the reaction to physical trauma. As the news washes over the grief-stricken, it is understandable how they might deny that it is happening. This coping mechanism may remain in place for minutes, days, or even weeks, as people grapple with grief. They may even find themselves waiting for the deceased to return. Denial provides a buffer from the reality of what has happened. In time, bewilderment and numbness eventually give way to other stages of grief that pave the way for acceptance. At KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, our caring and compassionate staff understands that many of those who are making arrangements to commemorate a passing are going through the grieving process. You will be treated with respect and patience. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week whenever you need us at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to visit our tastefully appointed facilities located at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Grief is in two parts. The first is loss. The second is the remaking of life.” - Ann Roiphe

General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.

Disappointed about my home town; when I drive through our town, it makes me sad. Our Christmas wreaths are pathetic. I have been to a lot of towns that look amazing, but when I drive in my town all I want to say is omg.... The wreaths are puny and half are not even lit. Shame on you for even putting them up; this town does not put any effort at all to make it look welcoming. If I did not live here I would just drive on. Please, next year, put some effort in to making our town nice. Again, shame on you and I think you all know what town I am talking about. To the person who stole our Siamese kitten/cat on Saturday 12-26: What were you thinking? She was loved and taken care of. Please return her! Just drop her off like you took her. Broken hearts in Bristol Thank you to those who throughout the Christmas Holiday wished everyone a “Merry Christmas.” I’m so sick of the political correctness. Bullying by a few to change the ways of all. There’s hope for common sense yet. To ALL people driving who stop in the middle of a busy road to make a right
hand turn.... what are you thinking? There’s no traffic light, no yield sign and there is no stop sign.....Did you get your license from a Cracker Jack box? A right hand turn is a smooth motion...no reason to come to a screeching halt and look 4 ways!! To those with roadside memorials...We are truly sorry for your loss but “take it to the grave.” Imagine if everyone set up roadside memorials....there would be no place to walk. Leaving them up for 3 to 5 years or replenishing them is not fair to the community. That’s what grave sites are for and what YOU paid for; please move your memorials to the grave and out of public domain.

Diabetic Foot Ulcers Deservedly Feared
The New Year is bringing exciting changes!
DON’T FORGET! Dr. Washburn’s patients will continue to be seen by Dr. Doaga at 94 Main Street, Geneseo: (585) 243-2421
New Patients Welcome at Both Locations
4384 Lakeville Rd., Geneseo • 585.243.2320 Most insurances accepted.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is an 84-year-old diabetic. He has had a wound on his foot (on the inner side of his right foot, near his big toe) for about five months. He has been treated by a podiatrist, who has debrided the wound every week. He prescribed antibiotics when the wound has looked infected. A visiting nurse and my mother have changed and dressed the wound regularly during these months. This week, the podiatrist said he could see the bone in my dad’s foot, and recommended hyperbaric treatment. Could you tell me what your opinion is of this treatment in my father’s case? Do you know if it has a high percentage of success? -- C.O. ANSWER: Foot ulcers in diabetes are common and feared. Diabetes damages blood vessels, both large and small. Also, longstanding diabetes decreases the effectiveness of the inflammatory response and immune system. Finally, poor nerve function in people with diabetes combines with these other factors to predispose one to developing breakdown of the skin and development of ulcers. These ulcers can get large and deep, and when the bone is visible (and sometimes even when it’s not), the bone is infected. In this case, there is a high risk of the need for amputation. By far, the best way to deal with diabetic foot ulcers is to not get them in the first place. Good control of diabetes, proper footwear, regular checks by a professional and daily self-checks of the feet for people at high risk can reduce the likelihood of developing ulcers. Early and aggressive treatment of precursor lesions, even mild redness of the skin, ingrown toenails or fungal infection of the feet, should prompt urgent evaluation by a podiatrist. Once the ulcer has progressed to the point where your dad’s is now, aggressive measures are called for. In addition to care by a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon, evaluation by a vascular surgeon and a wound-management specialist may be limb- and even lifesaving. While hyperbaric oxygen has indeed been shown to be beneficial in several studies (reducing amputation rate from 33 percent to 9 percent in one study), only an expert with detailed knowledge of your dad’s case can decide whether this is appropriate treatment. If you trust your podiatrist, I think it may well be a useful treatment. However, I would be sure that he, or a vascular surgeon, has looked at the quality of blood flow to the foot. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your position on the shingles vaccine for people in their 70s? We have been told that some doctors do not approve of it. Yet we know of so many people who suffered terribly from shingles. Thank you. -- J.T. ANSWER: I’ve written about the vaccine lots of times. I am a strong believer in it and think anyone over 60 should get it unless they have a medical reason not to. The older you are, the more important it is to get the shot, since the complication of pain (postherpetic neuralgia) is so devastating and tends to lasts longer the older you are. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 6 Fresh New Ways To Enjoy Potatoes (BPT) - Potatoes are the vegetable that take breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to the next level of yum. They are quick to disappear but also quick and easy to buy, prepare and serve. Not only are potatoes uber satisfying, but research published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition also shows that when prepared healthfully, they can be a part of a weight loss program-just call them the 9th Wonder of the World. If you’re looking for flavorful and nutritious dishes that can be part of your weight management plan, then look no further. Here’s a little inspiration for potato dishes sure to become favorites: DIY potato chips: This is a super easy and delicious recipe. Boil a russet potato and a few purple potatoes for 5 minutes, drain, dry and cut into thin slices. Toss the freshly cut slices in one beaten egg white. Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray and evenly space the chips throughout the pan. Bake slices at 400ºF for 35 minutes, turning halfway through. Top chips with sea salt. Season with new flavor favorites: Spice up your baked or roasted potatoes with healthy toppings that really raise the bar on nutrition and flavor. Start with a plain, thick and creamy yogurt and a good source of protein. If you’re serious about spice, try adding a tablespoon of Sriracha and orange juice to a halfcup of your yogurt, mix, and add a dollop to your potatoes. Love a Mediterranean flair? Top your taters with Greek yogurt mixed with lemon, garlic, roasted red peppers and oregano. Wholesome mashed potatoes: Mash your potatoes with a low-fat spread, Greek yogurt or skim milk for that creamy, delicious texture you love, without all the calories. Slim-belly baked potato bar: Families will love a baked potato bar. Top a baked potato with ground turkey, salsa and light sour cream for taco night, or top your potatoes with tomato sauce, turkey pepperoni, Italian blend shredded cheese and other veggies for a pizza-style delight. One medium-sized skin-on potato has just 110 calories and contains 45 percent of your daily value of vitamin C. On its own, a potato contains no fat, no sodium, no cholesterol and has more potassium than a banana. Healthy eating is so much better with foods you love and new ways to enjoy them. For more potato recipes, visit PotatoGoodness.com.

APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

Did You Know? There are two types of cholesterol, one that can make the arteries less flexible and therefore make a person more susceptible to heart attack or stroke; and the other that actually protects against heart attack. Cholesterol cannot dissolve in the blood, which means it has to be transported to and from the cells by carriers known as lipoproteins. Low-density lipoproteins, or LDL, are considered “bad” cholesterol. When too much bad cholesterol is circulating in the blood, LDL can slowly build up on the inner walls of the arteries, possibly even teaming with other substances to form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that narrows the arteries and makes them less flexible. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is what’s considered “good” cholesterol. That’s because medical experts feel HDL carries cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where cholesterol is then passed from the body. In addition, some experts also feel HDL removes excess cholesterol from arterialplaque, slowing its buildup as a result. And though cholesterol is commonly, and falsely, considered a dirty word, low levels of HDL actually increase a person’s risk of heart disease. A simple blood test can help men and women learn their HDL and LDL levels, and if they need to make any changes to get on the right track. TF112384

However, countless studies have shown this first meal of the day is extremely important. Skipping out on a balanced breakfast can drag you down all day, both mentally and physically. Being hungry later in the day may also make you more likely to overeat or nibble on high-calorie snacks. For those mornings when you’re crunched for time, grab a protein-rich ready-to-drink shake or sandwich with egg, cheese and lean meat to give yourself sustained energy for the rest of the day. Work in a workout. In addition to helping ward off disease and manage your weight, regular exercise helps lift your mood by stimulating feel-good chemicals in the brain and boosts energy by helping your body work more efficiently. A combination of aerobic or cardio activity (walking, jogging or running) and muscle-strengthening activity (lifting weights, resistance training or yoga) is the winning formula, according to the most recent Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Power with protein. Your body gets energy from three main sources: carbohydrates, fat and protein. Protein plays a major role in repairing damaged cells, tissues and muscle. Good sources of protein include meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts and vegetables, but the best sources deliver lots of protein without a lot of fat, carbs and sugar. A protein-based snack is a good way to recharge during the day. Keep up on sleep. Quality sleep - and an adequate amount of it - is critical to your overall wellbeing. While you’re sleeping, your body is hard at work healing and repairing from the day, as well as regulating your hormonal balance and protecting your immune system. At the same time, your brain is also recharging to help your mental function, including learning aptitude, problem solving and emotional health. Most adults need an average of 7-9 hours of sleep for optimal performance.

Latest Procedures & Technology With Over 25 Years Experience SIMPLE FIX FOR CROOKED TEETH When teeth are crooked, chipped, or overlapping, individuals may hesitate or even forego visiting the dentist or orthodontist in the belief that treatment would be too expensive. The fact is, however, that damaged and out-of-position teeth can often be remedied without orthodontic treatment, veneers, or crowns. The cosmetic technique known as “tooth reshaping and contouring” is a minimally invasive, relatively inexpensive procedure that involves removal of a small bit of tooth enamel in order to alter the length, shape, or position of teeth. The treated teeth are then polished for a smooth finish. Tooth reshaping and contouring is most often used on the upper front incisors and canines, but may also be employed to correct bite imbalances involving the molars. Feel free to contact us with any questions about correcting crooked teeth or to schedule a consultation. We believe it is our responsibility to share our acquired knowledge and understanding of oral health with each and every patient. Schedule your appointment today! Let us help you keep that winning smile. P.S. Tooth reshaping and contouring can be used to give teeth a more feminine or masculine shape simply by rounding or squaring their edges.
