Microwave Egg Scrambles Fresh eggs are nutritional powerhouses packed with protein and vitamins A, D and E. Microwave egg scrambles taste like an omelet without the cooking hassles. Simply crack an egg into a coffee cup, add a tablespoon of milk and beat until mixed. If desired, add extras like chopped onion, mushrooms and cheese. Microwave for 30 seconds, then stir and microwave for another 30 seconds until done.

Breakfast Pizza Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

Anemia and aging Aging is accompanied by a number of physical changes. Some of these changes, such as vision impairment or loss of hearing, are anticipated, while others may arrive unexpectedly. One condition many adults unexpectedly encounter is anemia. While anemia is common in older adults and its prevalence increases with age, it is not a condition that is widely considered part of the aging process. Anemia is often a symptom of a hidden problem that needs to be addressed promptly. Anemia is one of the most common blood disorders, affecting more than three million Americans, says the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The American Society of Hematology notes that anemia is characterized by insufficient levels of red blood cells in the blood. Anemia also occurs when red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen to the various organs and tissues throughout the body, are not functioning properly. Very often the signs of anemia are overlooked or go unnoticed until a blood test determines low hemoglobin (Hb) or hematocrit (HCT) concentrations. Some people discover they have anemia as they attempt to donate blood, at which time their red blood cell count is found to be inadequate. When the body lacks oxygen, any number of the following symptoms may be experienced: · weakness · dizziness · extreme fatigue · shortness of breath · fast or irregular heartbeat

Anemia is not usually discovered unless a blood test is ordered. Its symptoms can mimic other conditions.

· pale or yellow skin · cold hands or feet Frequently, existing disorders or conditions, such as congestive heart failure, are made worse by anemia. But unless doctors specifically consider anemia as a possible cause of symptoms, its presence can go undiagnosed. The American Academy of Family Physicians says the most common causes of anemia among older men and women include chronic diseases and iron deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, gastrointestinal bleeding, and myelodysplastic syndrome are other causes of anemia. The main way to treat anemia is to discover its source and reverse the outcomes. For instance, a gastrointestinal bleed may need to be repaired. If iron deficiency is the source of the anemia, iron supplements may be prescribed. Many methods to correct anemia involve trial and error and experimentation, especially when the source of the anemia is unknown. Anemia is a condition that can affect aging adults but does not need to be accepted as a natural consequence of aging. Correct diagnosis and treatment can mitigate symptoms.

LIVINGSTON EDITION

M any people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt w ith once inside a home. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Rodents, the most common w inter pests, invade nearly 21 million U.S. homes each w inter. Despite all the proper precautions, if rodents still find their w ay inside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitc hen cabinets, along w alls, on top of w all studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and trac ks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents w ill also sometimes reveal themselves through scurrying sounds.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) W hen a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A w orking smoke ala rm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than tw enty percent of American homes are w ithout them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. The peak time for home fire fatalities is betw een 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., w hen most families are asleep. Bedrooms Do not trap electrical cords against w alls. Heat can build up, posing a fire hazard. Use only lab-a pproved electric blankets and w armers. M ake sure cords are not w orn or coming apart. Do not leave electric blankets sw itched on all night unless they are marked “ suitable for all night use.” Keep bedding, curtains and other combustible items at least three feet aw ay from space heaters. Never smo ke in bed. Replace mattresses made before the 2007 Federal M attress Flammability Standard. By law, mattresses made since then are required to be s afer. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. .

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Check for leaks and plug any you find. Homes may develop air leaks over time, and such leaks allow air to infiltrate the home. W hen that occurs, homeow ners instinctively turn up the thermostat in w inter to combat the cold air getting in. Come summertime, those same homeow ners w ill run their air conditioners on a higher setting in an effort to stay comfortable w hen hot air is creeping through the cracks. Rather than adjusting the temperature inside, fix any sources of air infiltration you find. Run your hand along doorw ays and w indow s to determine if any drafts are coming through. Older homes may also develop cracks in bricks, around the foundation and in siding or stucco. Seal any areas w here you feel air infiltrating your home, w hich w ill save money, reduce your energy consumption and make your older home more efficient.

INSULATED SIDING CAN KEEP YOUR HEAT W HERE IT BELONGS -- INSIDE! If you w ere hit by the “ polar vortex” that brought subzero temperatures to more than half of the continental U.S., it w as a good reminder that the best w ay to stay w arm w as to dress in layers. The same is true for houses. Today’s homeow ners looking for w ays to improve their home’s energy performanc e are increasingly choosing insulated siding -- vinyl siding w ith rigid foam insulation that is laminated or permanently attached to the panel. Think of it as adding an extra layer to w ard off the cold. M ost exterior w alls have insulation in betw een the w all studs but allow significant energy loss through the studs themselves, w hic h are poor insulators. This is called “ thermal bridging.” Insulated siding improves energy effic ienc y by reducing thermal bridging. Like a blanket, it is continuous insulation over the studs, w hic h helps homes stay w arm in w inter and cool in summer. Designed to reach higher levels of rigidity, stability and thermal resistanc e -- “ R-value” -insulated siding is subject to an array of regulations, standards and third-party quality assurance tests that determine how it is manufactured and marketed. Due to that rigor, a number of building and energy-efficiency programs have recognized that insulated siding qualifies as home insulation. In addition, it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a building product that c an help qualify homes under the Energy Star Qualified Homes Program.

Dog-Proof Hardwood Floors Pet parents may resign themselves to the fact that hardwood floors aren’t practical. But that doesn’t have to be the case. It’s possible to have and maintain hardwood floors and still enable pooches to enjoy rooms with wood floors. * Keep dogs’ nails trimmed short so that they do not scratch or scuff wood floors.

* If dog bowls are kept on the floor, use a mat that will protect against spills, drips and slobber. Something that will not allow moisture to bleed through onto the floor is ideal, as is a mat that will contain spills. * Place runners in high-traffic areas so that the dogs have an easier time of walking from room to room. * Clean the bottom of paws when the dog comes inside from the yard so that dirt won’t mar or ruin the floors. * Choose distressed-looking floors, so if scratches resulting from dogs’ nails do occur, it will blend in with the flooring and not stick out like a sore thumb. * Ask to have a thick layer of clear-coating applied to the floors to further protect them. * Do not encourage doggie horseplay on the wood floors, even if it is humorous watching the pooch slide around and try to get footing. * Consider a floor wax product to improve a dogs’ traction on the floors and reduce their propensity to claw-in to get a good grip. * Dogs that tend to grow long fur between the pads of their feet may need to have that fur trimmed as short as possible. This will help improve the traction the dog will have when walking on the wood floors.

Are You Worried About The Security Of Your Home Or Business?

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE from Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

My wife and I would like to thank all of the people in the Bristol, Bloomfield and Honeoye area in finding our dog Mattie. She is now back home with us. Many of you went out on your own time and looked for her. We were humbled by the support and good wishes people had for Mattie. She now wears a GPS device and is more closely watched as she should be.

We would like to express our most sincere Gratitude and Thanks to the Medical Staff at Highland Hospital 3rd floor Oncology, especially to Dr. Makiko Ban-Hoefen and Lisa Acosta, PA as well as the staff on floor 5 East and the Palliative Care Team for their outstanding care given to Hazel Brisbane during her fight with cancer.

Thanks to the man at Plant Paradise Cafe in Fairport who paid for all of the customers lunches today! It was a super nice gesture and I’m sure appreciated by everyone.

I am a retired ambulance corps volunteer and take issue with the concern about ambulance staff using the ambulance to make food runs. If I used my own personal vehicle to make a food run that could add an additional 10 minutes to a response. If you were having a heart attack, would you want the ambulance there in 6-10 minutes or possibly 20 minutes? When we are picking up food, we are on duty, ready to run out the door if a call comes in. Further, by being out in the community we remind residents that our service is available for their emergency. Exposure i.e. community events, not just in an emergency, has a very positive impact on residents. Next time you see an ambulance crew getting lunch, thank them for their service and tell them to enjoy their meal.

Reading the vent regarding the ambulance being used to pick up food made me angry. First let me point out that that at one time or another ambulance, fire and police use their work vehicles to pick up food when they are on their shift as I have been in restaurants when they have walked in to pick up their order to go. At times they are on 10, 12 or overnight shifts and as long as they stay in the area they are paid to cover I see no problem with them picking up a meal and as a volunteer they give their personal time to serve their community and to suggest that they use their own vehicles to pick up food means you run the risk of our emergency services being without enough people to cover a call which could put people’s lives at risk! Now ask yourself is it worth it?! I think Not! Typical of today’s society...judge without knowing what you are talking about. I am not on the ambulance but I work closely with them. They do NOT load up and take ambulance to get lunch; they are coming back from taking a call. And remember they are VOLUNTEERING their time and you are begrudging them from stopping to grab food?! I have to wonder... what do you give back???

6 Fresh New Ways To Enjoy Potatoes (BPT) - Potatoes are the vegetable that take breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to the next level of yum. They are quick to disappear but also quick and easy to buy, prepare and serve. Not only are potatoes uber satisfying, but research published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition also shows that when prepared healthfully, they can be a part of a weight loss program-just call them the 9th Wonder of the World. If you’re looking for flavorful and nutritious dishes that can be part of your weight management plan, then look no further. Here’s a little inspiration for potato dishes sure to become favorites: DIY potato chips: This is a super easy and delicious recipe. Boil a russet potato and a few purple potatoes for 5 minutes, drain, dry and cut into thin slices. Toss the freshly cut slices in one beaten egg white. Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray and evenly space the chips throughout the pan. Bake slices at 400ºF for 35 minutes, turning halfway through. Top chips with sea salt. Season with new flavor favorites: Spice up your baked or roasted potatoes with healthy toppings that really raise the bar on nutrition and flavor. Start with a plain, thick and creamy yogurt and a good source of protein. If you’re serious about spice, try adding a tablespoon of Sriracha and orange juice to a halfcup of your yogurt, mix, and add a dollop to your potatoes. Love a Mediterranean flair? Top your taters with Greek yogurt mixed with lemon, garlic, roasted red peppers and oregano. Wholesome mashed potatoes: Mash your potatoes with a low-fat spread, Greek yogurt or skim milk for that creamy, delicious texture you love, without all the calories. Slim-belly baked potato bar: Families will love a baked potato bar. Top a baked potato with ground turkey, salsa and light sour cream for taco night, or top your potatoes with tomato sauce, turkey pepperoni, Italian blend shredded cheese and other veggies for a pizza-style delight. One medium-sized skin-on potato has just 110 calories and contains 45 percent of your daily value of vitamin C. On its own, a potato contains no fat, no sodium, no cholesterol and has more potassium than a banana. Healthy eating is so much better with foods you love and new ways to enjoy them. Stick to a sleep schedule. Make sure that you go to bed and get up at roughly the same time each day, even on weekends. Having a consistent sleep pattern helps regulate your body’s sleep-wake cycle, helping you to sleep better at night. If you have trouble falling asleep within the first 20 minutes or so of going to bed, that’s okay - simply go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel tired. Agonizing over falling asleep will only make it tougher for you to get the rest you need.

New Evening Hours to Accommodate You! Mon., Wed., Thurs. 7-3pm; Fri. 7-1pm; Tuesdays 7-7pm!

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with essential tremor. Propranolol 10 mg has not helped. Sometimes I can write and eat with no shaking, but other times the shaking is so bad that the food falls off the fork or I cannot read my printing or writing. If I drink a beer, it seems to relax me enough that in five minutes I can write or eat quite normally nearly every time. I’ve been told that it doesn’t appear to be Parkinson’s. Any suggestions will be enormously appreciated. -- J.N. ANSWER: Essential tremor, sometimes called benign familial tremor, is common. Often, one has a family history of tremor. It is not Parkinson’s disease; however, it isn’t always “benign” in that, for some people, it can be disabling, preventing a person from not only writing, but, as in your case, activities of daily living such as eating. Alcohol has long been known to reduce the tremor temporarily, but it must be taken cautiously, since regular use will diminish its effectiveness, requiring higher doses for effectiveness -- and, as I have written many times, excess alcohol is a major cause of many medical problems. Occasional use with meals is reasonable. Other effective treatments for essential tremor include antiepilepsy medications such as primidone, gabapentin and topiramate. Unfortunately, all of these can have side effects, so they are best prescribed by an expert, such as a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders. For serious essential tremor not responsive to medications, deep brain stimulation (via electrodes placed surgically) is effective. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2009, and she is taking Namenda and Aricept to help slow the advancement of the disease. I am writing because she complains of being cold all the time. She and my father keep the temperature in their house at 80 degrees, and my mother wears winter clothes, a coat and a blanket in the house. She sometimes sweats through the clothes, but we can’t persuade her to remove any layers. The house is uncomfortably hot for anyone else, and yet she says she is cold. Her general practitioner has said that this is part of her disease. Is there anything else you have heard of that could explain this? -- C.L. ANSWER: I have seen a lot of people with dementia of all kinds, but I haven’t personally seen this degree of intolerance to cold. Her doctor may have more experience than I do, but I didn’t find much about it written in the medical literature. Every person is different, and it’s possible this is just part of how the dementia is affecting her. However, cold intolerance to this degree suggests some alternate possibilities. The most important and likely is low thyroid levels, which can also cause a condition that looks like dementia and would certainly make dementia worse. I bet her doctor has checked for it. If not done recently, she should have her thyroid level checked. Other, less-common causes include Addison’s disease (inability to make appropriate amounts of steroid hormones), iron deficiency, anemia from any cause and severe malnutrition. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Local Living Healthy Workshops Help Folks With Chronic Disease One out of every two adults in the U.S. has at least one chronic disease. Chronic disease limits daily activities for 25% of the people diagnosed. In 2014, Noyes Health received grant funding from the Genesee Valley Health Partnership to provide Chronic Disease Self-Management programs called Living Healthy and Living Healthy with Diabetes. Classes are for adults with an ongoing health condition who feel limited in day-to-day activities, or feel tired, alone, or fearful and are looking for better ways to manage their symptoms. If you have conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic pain, anxiety, local Living Healthy workshops can help you take charge of your life. Evidence from clinical trials and program evaluations reveal that participants: * Feel better, increase their energy, and experience relief from pain, fatigue, and anxiety * Discover better nutrition and exercise choices * Understand new treatment options * Learn better ways to talk about their health with their doctor and family members * Connect with and learn from others with similar health issues * Gain confidence in their ability to manage their health Since 2014, more than 100 Livingston County residents have participated in Living Healthy workshops. After attending, folks are saying: “I was tired. My pain was my boss.

It was telling me what I could and couldn’t do. . . . Living Healthy workshops put me back in charge.” “Now I have the energy to do the things that matter. I am calmer and more confident about my health. I got relief from my pain.” Workshops in Livingston County are FREE and taught by trained and certified instructors. Classes are 2 1⁄2Ω hours long and held for six weeks each spring and fall. Participants receive a Living Healthy Life Book and relaxation CD. Class size is limited. If you are an open-minded, friendly individual who is comfortable speaking in front of small groups and enjoys helping people, consider volunteering as a Living Healthy Peer Leader. Workshop materials are scripted and content for the workshop is provided for you and easy to use! You’ll receive free training and ongoing support from our project coordinator. A four day peer leader training is scheduled for March 29th & 31st and April 5th & 7th from 9am-4pm in Canandaigua. To learn more about the next Living Healthy class near you, or to inquire about becoming a volunteer peer leader, call: 335-4358 or email: livinghealthy@noyeshealth.org or visit noyeshealth.org/health-information/living-healthy.

He is greatly missed by the family’s cats who eagerly gathered for treat-time and enjoyed sleeping on his lap.

Livonia: February 14, 2016, at age 77 years, peacefully at the Conesus Lake Nursing home after a long illness. Predeceased by three infant children; George, Elizabeth, and Joseph; parents, Theodore & Coralyn Doner; brothers, Theodore Doner Jr., Walter Doner, and Claire “Buzz” Doner, and daughter-in-law Mary Ann Brol. Bob was born in Brooklyn, NY, and often fondly reminisced about exploring the woods close to his home growing up. He found his niche in school by joining the Midwood High School Rifle Team. He later went on to become an NRA instructor and lifetime member. He served in the National Guard, and opened his own sporting goods shop in Brooklyn where he did gunsmithing for many years. He and his wife built a home in the upstate hamlet of Old Chatham, NY. There he set up a successful woodworking business, where he produced many custom pieces of furniture. He made items for several historic homes and museums in the Hudson Valley. Upon retiring, he moved to Melbourne, FL where he spent his time building large models of sailing ships, restoring a boat, and going to fleamarkets. He also continued his lifelong hobby of photography. After many years in the sunshine, Bob returned to New York State. He made many contributions to his daughter´s old-house restorations and built several beautiful pieces of furniture. He entertained the cats and they entertained him heartily. Bob delighted in armchair adventures around the world, often staying with an old friend at 221B Baker St. He found a renewed love of reading, and amassed a huge library of mystery novels, as well as firearm, woodworking and sailing books. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hearthside Cats, P.O. Box 282, Geneseo, NY 14454. “No one is more unhappy than he who never had bad luck; he could never test himself...” ~ Seneca We may pity the poor soul who has consistent bad luck but he has one advantage over his fellows who have had nothing but good fortune… he knows that he can survive the worst that fortune has in store for him. A Roman philosopher of the first century, Seneca recognized this seeming paradox. The person upon whom fortune continually smiles is made unhappy by uncertainty. Never having been tested, he wonders how he would manage if his good luck changed to bad. It may help to keep this in mind when we experience a run of bad luck. We have no “standard” service. Each family we serve has unique needs and we tailor our service to meet these. Our best references are from the families we have served.

THE FLEXIBLE ARRANGEMENT A memorial service not only ensures a unique experience that both celebrates the life of the deceased and recognizes his or her death, but it also allows for flexibility in timing and planning. The service can be planned to take place days, weeks, or even months after death because the body of the deceased is usually not present. This important difference allows family and friends the luxury of tailoring the ceremony to a form and venue most in keeping with their wishes and ideas. With this in mind, services are often held at locations that are most meaningful and appropriate to the deceased and his or her family and friends, with music, readings, eulogies, and photo collages. Should a memorial service be something that you feel is appropriate for your situation, contact us today. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. We will provide you with a wide range of commemorative options to fit your taste and budget. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities, conveniently located at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose. General eulogy preparation tips: Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.

At the family´s request there will be no calling or services. Arrangements entrusted to the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc, Livonia-Honeoye. To send a condolence and for further information please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com
