Cat Care Tips for First Time Owners Discourage biting. Similar to a first time parent telling their child no, first time cat owners might find it difficult to discourage certain behaviors their kitten exhibits. One common problem owners come across is biting. First-time owners might find it harmless if their kitten bites their hands. After all, such biting doesn’t hurt. However, allowing kittens to bite often results in a cat who bites often. Should a kitten begin to bite, strongly discourage such behavior to avoid the problem becoming much more serious in the years ahead.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On March 27, 1945, Nazi Germany launches its last V-2 longrange rockets, killing 162 civilians in England and Belgium. The V-2 could carry a 2,000-pound warhead and became the precursor of the ICBM of the postwar era. The years teach much which the days never knew. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

What’s next after retirement? Scores of people spend their working days dreaming of the moment they are eligible for retirement. They may have retirement counted down to the minutes and seconds, particularly if they’ve been in a job that hasn’t been the most enjoyable. But many people find that once they retire they do not know what to do to fill their time. Boredom actually may be a side effect of retirement, and some people actually want to go back to work. Much of the focus when planning for retirement concerns finances. All other factors take a backseat. Therefore, there may be emotional issues that arise during retirement, and retirees are not always prepared to deal with such issues. Having a post-retirement plan in place can mean the difference between happiness and having a hard time adjusting, according to experts. Here are some tips that can help anyone ease into the golden years. · Establish goals. After working for years, the idea of setting goals can seem counterintuitive. But goals can give life direction and have you looking forward to things in the future. Goals also motivate retirees to get up in the morning now that a commute to work isn’t part of the daily schedule. · Donate time or money. Giving back to others, whether to the community or to a charitable organization, can feel good and give retirees some structure. Volunteering your time at a place can give life some sort of purpose outside of a job. · Start a home-based business. Just because you retire doesn’t mean you have to fully retire. Now may be the

opportunity to start a business venture you have always dreamed about, whether that is something hands-on or just serving as a consultant. · Try new things. Part of goal-setting is to add things to the list you’ve never done before, which can boost feelings of excitement. You may discover a new interest that becomes a passion. Now that you have time to explore new hobbies, they might prove more rewarding. · Meet with people. Part of what makes work fulfilling is the opportunity to get out of the house and interact with others who are not members of your family. It’s easy to fall into a rut when you are not being mentally stimulated by conversation from different people. · Realize it’s alright not to love retirement. Just because the grass seemed greener in someone else’s yard, doesn’t mean it always turns out to be that way. It is OK to accept that maybe retirement isn’t entirely what you expected and to make changes that can enable the experience to be better.

Celebrate life with beautiful funeral programs.

Reach those who are near and dear to you and your loved one. To have your loved one’s obituary in Passages please request your funeral director to contact us.
We especially want to thank the Krantz family, the Livonia Ambulance Crew, Strong Hospital Emergency doctors and nurses & the doctors and nurses on 7-1600 who provided excellent care to Tom and compassion to our family. There are not enough words to describe the gratitude we feel for our community of friends and family who dropped everything to be of help to myself and Tom’s family: Kevin & Cindy Regan, Dawn & Doug Johnston, Mike Kelley, Carl Chichester, Renee’s Custom Catering, Matt & Ted of Fineline Pipeline and the entire Conesus Golf Club Members for opening up the clubhouse, and organizing the celebration of Tom’s life. A very special thank you to Vern Fleming of Applied Energy Solutions where Tom worked for his gracious generosity, and the employees of AES for their continued support. To the people of Pfaudler, Inc. for your generous support and continued understanding as I work through my loss. Rev. David Geer and the United Methodist Church of Livonia for a beautiful service (everyone liked “The Summons”). I personally want to thank Bonnie Riley and Dave and Pam Young for being by my side to help guide me through some of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever made. The outpouring of support and the large turnout is a testament of Tom’s life, well lived and loved. I have to say he would have been as overwhelmed as I was, and he would have truly loved it.

EXPRESSING OUR HUMANITY
“The secret of happiness is curiosity…” ~ Norman Douglas Boredom is certainly one of the worst of afflictions. Try to imagine how the dreary hours must drag when one is totally bored! Happily, there is no reason why anyone should ever be bored. In this wonderful world there are so many wonders we can explore… so many more delightful things to know about than we can possibly investigate. It starts with childhood. The curious child is happy as he inquires and learns. There is no reason why we should ever lose this childlike thirst for knowledge, especially since curiosity leads to happiness. We are pleased that most of the families that come to us do so because of the recommendation of friends whom we have been privileged to serve. Ask your friends about us.

When attending a funeral, one cannot help but be struck by how the ceremony gives full expression to our humanity. The funeral tradition provides full recognition of a life completed and simultaneously creates a memorial that ensures remembrance. Ancient funeral customs began out of fear of the dead, as well as fear that the deceased’s spirit may return if the body were not disposed of in a respectful manner. Our ancestors were also fearful that neglecting to bury the dead according to established custom would fail to appease the higher power that oversaw their daily lives. As much of the fear associated with burial has been replaced with awe and respect, the tradition has been transformed and continues to change. Whether you prefer a traditional funeral or you choose a more personalized approach, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here to honor your requests. No detail is too large or too small for us to handle. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week whenever you need us at (585) 3465401. He has helped me do my shopping, carried furniture up three flights of stairs, fixed my daughter’s bike, taken my son to work and picked him up from work. Richard also does all kinds of work in the park such as [mowing] lawns, painting and trimming. He has taken us out to Lollypop Farm and to feed the llamas. Richard grills outside even in the winter and they call him Betty Crocker ‘cause he loves to bake. 5 to 8: Children of this age tend to like doing things with their hands. Activities that foster this enjoyment are beneficial to all. Ideas for kids to consider include working at a soup kitchen or helping parents deliver food to needy individuals. They can also be an asset at a senior center, playing board games with the elderly who may not have grandchildren of their own. 9 to 13: Adolescents can partake in volunteer work that enables them to be a bit more independent. A good idea is for kids to volunteer to do work around the neighborhood for different neighbors. Perhaps someone needs help maintaining the front lawn. Someone else may appreciate snow shoveling services. Older children can help shop for groceries for housebound individuals. 14 and up: Teenagers can do activities that fit with their ideals. Maybe they want to help clean up a beach or a park. Others can help renovate an abandoned lot into a skateboard park or kids play area. Kids may want to volunteer at school by being mentors to younger students. There are so many opportunities.

Nourish Your Body Many clinical studies show omega3 fatty acids, which are considered essential fatty acids, may protect adult eyes from dry eye syndrome. Omega-3s support healthy tear production and keep eyes moisturized. In addition to omega-3s, other ingredients like Vitamin A, D3, green tea and evening primrose oil can significantly accelerate the time it takes to feel relief. A formula like EyePromise EZ Tears, which contains nine soothing ingredients to target symptoms from the inside, offers rapid results with the dietary ingredients mentioned.

If you experience any of these signs, schedule an appointment at our office. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
High Blood Pressure Can Lead to Stroke DEAR DR. ROACH: Can high blood pressure cause blood clots, blindness and strokes? Or is this caused by taking the wrong combination of blood pressure medicines? -- Anon. ANSWER: High blood pressure over months or years causes damage to the lining of blood vessels. This can indeed predispose a person to a stroke. Reducing blood pressure gradually reduces risk of stroke. Blood clots also can cause strokes, but these usually are not linked to blood pressure, high or low, and instead are linked to conditions that affect the blood itself or that affect the rhythm of the heart. Some medicines, such as estrogen, make blood clots more likely. In people with very high blood pressure, lowering it too much, too quickly can cause strokes. The blood pressure needs to be reduced gradually, which usually can be done as an outpatient. There are still a few times when people with extremely high blood pressure are admitted to the hospital, where blood pressure can be brought down very slowly in a controlled environment. High blood pressure is one of the most common ailments for the general population. The booklet on it describes what it does and how it’s treated. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 104W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channe • On March 26, 1953, American medical researcher Dr. Jonas Salk announces that he has successfully tested a vaccine against the virus that causes polio. In 1952 -- an epidemic year for the crippling disease -- there were 58,000 new cases reported in the U.S.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: In March 2013, I fell and landed on my left side. Since then, I have had quite a lot of pain. I had an MRI that showed I have a tear of the gluteus medius muscle. I was advised to have a surgical repair done as an outpatient. My family doctor wants me to wait and talk to another surgeon. My pain is aggravated by pressure and weight-bearing activities. What is your suggestion? I’m 77 and in pretty good health, and I walk my dogs several times per day. -- M.C. ANSWER: Gluteus medius tears are an increasingly recognized cause of hip pain. The gluteus medius muscle helps hold the hip in place during walking. They often are treated conservatively, with injection and physical therapy. They can be mistaken for trochanteric bursitis, but persistence of pain despite treatment should make the physician consider alternate diagnoses, and an MRI usually makes the diagnosis. In your case, you have been suffering for two years, and I agree that it’s time to consider surgical repair. However, I also have to agree with your family doctor that a second opinion may be wise. There are several new surgical techniques, and you want an experienced surgeon operating on you. Talking to a second surgeon at the very least can make you more confident that the surgery is necessary. Postoperative recovery may require six weeks of crutches or other assistive device, and another six weeks in a hip brace, although the exact recovery depends on you and the type of surgery performed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW TO DONATE ITEM S INSTEAD OF CASH Contact your favorite charity. If you have a favorite charity, contact them before making any donations to determine their greatest needs. Some charities may need w inter coat donations, w hile others might be running low on nonperishable foods. Once you learn their needs, you can then donate items that fill those needs. You can even encourage friends, family and cow orkers to donate. Offer to pick up and deliver any items your loved ones and colleagues can donate to the charity. This is a great w ay to meet a charity’s needs w ithout making a cash donation or burdening the organization w ith items they cannot use.
If you really put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price. ~Author Unknown

Hope Valley Camp was founded in 2009 and moved to its current location in Dansville, NY in January of 2012. Since then it has become a beautiful year round facility that can sleep up to 90 people. In addition to serving retreat groups, its founders wished to provide affordable and desirable summer camp programs that would teach children the benefits of outdoor recreation and community living. They also wanted their facility to be a place that engages the outside community and has a positive impact on the world around it. This year, Hope Valley plans to extend its outreach by offering a new service program designed to improve local communities. The inspiration for its “Community Restoration Camp”grew out of the great work of Rochester’s Flower City Work Camp. During spring break in April, teens and Flower City Work Camp volunteers work on home improvement projects and participate in community outreach to those in need throughout the city of Rochester. “My brother and a number of his friends attended Flower City Work Camp each spring while growing up,” said Hope Valley Camp Director Nathan Welton. “The folks at Hope Valley wanted to find a way to mimic its success in their small community of Dansville.” The decision to offer Community Restoration Camp fit perfectly into the purpose and ministry calling of Hope Valley Camp. Their desire is to see local families restored, the Dansville community rebuilt, and hope brought back to the poor and struggling of the lower Genesee Valley. For those who are not aware, the small town of Dansville is an historically vibrant community that has fallen on very hard times over the last 50 years. Once a destination for tourists and health enthusiasts looking for comfort in the local waters, the town is now struggling and in need of a fresh start. The folks at Hope Valley recognized this need and asked themselves, “Why not us? Why not now?” During a three week period this summer, Community Restoration Camp work teams will provide free home repair services for the elderly, physically disabled and military veterans residing
Hope Valley work crew
Hope Valley Campers
in Dansville. Homes will be selected from online applications submitted at hopevalleycamp.com. During daylight hours campers will leave Hope Valley to work at a property in the community. At the end of a fulfilling day of service, they will return to camp for a delicious supper and an evening of fun activities, such as campfires, fishing, boating, archery, group games and all the other typical summer camp fun. In addition to experiencing the satisfaction of having helped others, youth will also have fun memories of spending several nights at summer camp. This unique service opportunity is available for those ages 12-21. Construction experience is not required; much of the work is very simple and easy to learn. Other skills will be taught by supervisors and team leaders. To learn more, or to volunteer to help supervise campers and lead an improvement team, contact Camp Director Nathan Welton at director@hopevalleycamp.com. Teens, here’s your chance to have a major impact in the lives of the less fortunate without having to leave your home state. Grab your friends, talk to your youth leader and sign up for Community Restoration Camp now at www.hopevalleycamp.com .

53 Genesee Street, Avon • 226-2526 • www.hurritech.com Thank you to the Canandaigua Payless Patron who anonymously purchased an Elsa hat (with braid!) for my four year old daughter. Your act of kindness and love filled our hearts and made tears roll down my cheeks –and the store associate’s cheeks too! Last night, Sammy was singing “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” and “Let It Go” in the kitchen while skipping and flipping the long braid over her shoulder! Thank you for brightening our day. We learned from the sales clerk that you’ve been missing your granddaughter; I hope that you see her soon. My daughter was meeting us in Batavia for my son’s hockey game on February 22. She was traveling on Royce Rd. in North Java when she encountered a slush-covered road and went into a ditch. She called me and asked what to do;
the only thing was to get a tow truck. She called me back and said a man stopped with a pickup truck and would pull her out. She called back again and said that he was now stuck with his truck! After a short wait, another pickup truck stopped and pulled both vehicles out of the ditch. When I spoke with my daughter I told her to get their names so we can repay them for all their time and effort. They just waved and said have a great day! And left. Thank God for both of you for taking care of my daughter, it feels good to know there are still people like you watching over us. I was in a Pittsford Wegmans on Monroe Avenue on 2-16-16. I was buying or trying to buy Crest Whitestrips. The kind I wanted was not on the shelf. Sherri was working in the dental & health care aisle and she went out of her way to help me find what I was looking for. Not only did she unpack many boxes to find it, she also said she had a coupon at home for me and would bring it in the next day. She took my name and number and called me the next day. Sherri went out of her way to help me. Wegmans is very lucky to have her!!! Thanks, LWM
would have just said to move the car. These people were in their 40’s. Wow!
I was sick, and parked in the 1st handicapped spot in pharmacy parking space. I came out tried to back out but was blocked by a man sitting in his car. I honked & started to back up expecting him to move. I then saw a woman come out of the store while I was trying to get out of the spot. The woman then got into the passenger side of car & it still didn’t move. I had to turn my car around in the parking spot. I pulled up to the couple as the back of their car faced the back of mine in the spot. I told them they were blocking me in the handicapped spot and they looked at each other & laughed at me. Disgusting behavior. If I wasn’t so sick I would have called the police so they could be ticketed but the police probably
I live in Senior Housing. There is a couple who are in their 80’s. He can’t walk without a walker. Yet he is still driving. What’s wrong with his wife, children and doctor for letting him still drive? How many more people have to die? Once again, what’s wrong with this picture? Put a price on someone’s life.
To the person that thinks the “GI-EDUCATION IS FREE.” I hold 7 Honorable Discharges, 26 years of service, wounded in Lebanon & Vietnam. I do not know who you are that you think my GI Bill was FREE. But, I did my time, to protect this country’s FREEDOM. I served Middle East Crisis, Lebanon Crisis, Vietnam, Formosa and Cactus Curtain (CUBA).
