Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1/4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1/4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is available in various materials.

Go vertical. An easy way to keep things neater is to remove items from the floor and embrace vertical storage. Shoe racks, hooks for purses and a cabinet for coats may do the trick.
Portable vs. Standby Generators
Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.
• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.
• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.
With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

A house with any kind of age will have dozens of stories to tell. I suppose if a novelist could live long enough, one could base an entire oeuvre on the lives that weave in and out of an antique house. ~Anita Shreve
Put a healthy spin on an old family favorite
Meatloaf is a dinnertime staple for many families. A favorite of adults and children alike, meatloaf can be prepared however cooks see fit, making it a versatile dish for family dinners. Parents who want to enjoy meatloaf with their families and do so while promoting healthy diets can try the following recipe for “Turkey, Vegetable & Oat MiniMeatloaves with Marinara Sauce” from Michelle Dudash’s “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds).
Preheat oven to 375 F. Coat a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or 6 mini loaf pans with spray. Pulse mushrooms in a food processor until finely chopped and add them to a large bowl. Repeat with onion and garlic.
Place a large frying pan over medium heat and add oil. When oil is shimmering, add vegetables and sauté for 7 minutes or until water releases and evaporates completely, lowering the heat as necessary. Set aside.
Process the oats until they are of a fine consistency. Whisk the eggs in the bowl used for the vegetables. Add processed oats, turkey, 3/4 cup of pasta sauce, cooked vegetables, vinegar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and stir together with a fork until blended.
Scoop the mixture into 6 mounds on the pan or into each mini-loaf pan, about 3/4 cup each. Shape each mound into a 4 x 2-inch loaf. Spread remaining 1 cup of pasta sauce on top of the loaves, distributing evenly. Bake on middle rack for 25 minutes, turning pan midway through cooking, until loaves are firm or a thermometer inserted in the middle reads at least 165 F. Allow loaves to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Recipe Notes: You can finely chop vegetables with a knife rather than using a food processor if you prefer. Whole oats can be added to the meat mixture for a more rustic texture.

* Use a turkey baster to "squirt" pancake batter into your frying pan. Mix the batter as normal and unscrew the top of the baster to load. You can use it to make letters for fun kids' breakfasts. No drips!
* If you have trouble opening the lid on glass jars, try using a pair of standard dishwashing gloves. ey work to grip both the lid and the jar. ey work especially well if your hands are the least bit moist.

Snack Foods That Promote Better Sleep
• Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier.
• Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep.

Inspiring Kindness and Inclusivity, One Story at a Time
arissa Sessler’s journey into the world of creative writing is deeply rooted in her family heritage and personal experiences. Growing up in and around Philadelphia, Sessler found early inspiration from her grandmothers, both of whom played significant roles in nurturing her love for the written word.
Herfirstwritingmemoryiswritingpoemswithhermaternal grandmother, who continues to create and inspire at 97 years young, while her paternal grandmother, a former English teacher, encouraged her grandchildren to explore their creative potential. is strong foundation in storytelling and artistic expression became a driving force for Sessler as she navigated her life and career.
Sessler attended Syracuse University, where she pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and International Relations. It was here that she met her husband, a native of the Finger Lakes region. Following several years of living in Brooklyn a er college, the couple relocated to the Rochester area to start their family. Sessler currently works full-time in Management Consulting, balancing her professional career with her creative writing pursuits, writing on nights and weekends while her oneyear-old daughter sleeps.
Today, her daughter serves as a new source of inspiration. During her maternity leave in 2023, Sessler penned her debut children’s book, Brooklyn and the Blueberry, a heartwarming tale inspired by both her daughter and her loyal dog, Brooklyn, whom she describes as “a gentle 85lb giant who was by my side throughout my pregnancy and now is my daughter’s loyal companion.” e story, which emphasizes the power of friendship and inclusivity, carries a lesson that is especially important to Sessler as a new mother. “As a mom, I want to inspire my daughter and other children to be kind, welcoming, and loyal friends,” she shares.
Sessler loves to write in local coffee shops as well as in the comfort of her home. She connects with writing communities online and says it’s been wonderful to make connections and encourage each other on their unique writing journeys.
Much of her writing for the new book took place “on the notes app on my phone during the late nights of early motherhood,” and then was refined over time thanks to her supportive network of friends, family, and colleagues who
provided feedback on early dra s. Sessler also thanks her publisher, Hailey Glynn of Growing with Glynn Press, and illustrator Victoria Mikki, for helping bring her story to life.
rough her stories, Sessler hopes to connect with readers, particularly parents and children, by delivering meaningful messages in a relatable, engaging way. rough a silly and unlikelyfriendshipbetweenadogandablueberry, Brooklyn and the Blueberry encourages young readers to embrace differences and forge friendships that transcend appearance. “Friendship is so powerful and can make a difference in the lives of all people, but especially little ones,” she says, adding “the world can feel overwhelming and scary at times, and the support and connection from a friend can make all the difference in brightening an individual’s experience.”
For aspiring writers, Sessler offers simple yet profound advice: “Just do it!” She emphasizes that it’s important not to let fear or hesitation prevent someone from telling their story. “If you have a story to tell, tell it! Creating art is such an incredible way to leave our marks in the world and it is so uniquely human. We have the ability to inspire individuals to think, create, and be curious. at is a gi .”
As she looks toward the future, Marissa Sessler hopes to continue writing more adventures for Brooklyn and the Blueberry, while maintaining her role as a devoted wife and mother. Above all, she is committed to making the world a kinder, more inclusive place, one story at a time.
Stop out at 11am on October 5th to Barnes & Noble at Eastview Mall to enjoy Sessler’s reading, activity, and book signing.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY
The Season was waning to its close. The gardens showed but little of the ravages of autumn as yet. The noble avenues of trees were still in their glory of fulness and expansive verdure; although here and there a few fallen leaves seemed to have fluttered down to earth as premature heralds of decay. The later flowers were gorgeous in their many-coloured splendour, though their earlier sisters had already lived the best of their lives, and now drooped their heads, as if to hide their blighted charms.

Multiple Myeloma Patients Can Live Longer With Proper Treatment
DEAR DR. ROACH: Can someone have diffuse multiple myeloma with serious symptoms (like bone pain, pale skin, amber-colored urine, constipation, fatigue, insomnia, excessive sweating, and dizziness) and still be alive after four years? -- J.O.
ANSWER: Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer of the bone marrow. The cells in the bone marrow (called plasma cells) stop responding as they should and make large amounts of antibodies. Unfortunately, these antibodies don’t help you fight off infections; they consist of a single clone that usually doesn’t have any discernible activity. What myeloma does do is crowd out the rest of the cells in the bone marrow so that the person can’t make adequate red blood cells (causing pale skin and dizziness), blood-clotting cells (predisposing people to bleeding), and other immune system cells. This puts a person at a high risk for infection. The myeloma cells can get into the bone and cause bone pain. The high metabolic activity can also cause dizziness and sweating, and many cancers cause more nonspecific symptoms like fatigue, insomnia and constipation. Myeloma can also damage the kidney.
Although myeloma is generally considered incurable, new treatments have greatly improved the prognosis. In people with the standard type of myeloma, survival is eight years with the usual treatment. With a stem-cell transplant, survival with average-risk myeloma is over 12 years. Some highly aggressive forms of myeloma have a much worse survival rate.
I don’t have enough information to tell whether you have standard or high-risk myeloma. Your symptoms suggest that your disease isn’t under good control. But the majority of people treated with the best available treatments do live longer than four years.

TICKS ARE STILL OUT WELL INTO FALL
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Austin” was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease. He’s responding very well to treatment with antibiotics. Still, I’m wracking my brain as to how he was exposed. I check him for ticks every time we go out hiking, and I’ve never found one. I avoid trails in the deep woods during the summer months, when there’s a lot of brush and ticks are out. What can I do to protect him from another tick bite? -- Zack in Asheville, North Carolina
DEAR ZACK: I’m glad to hear Austin is on the mend! Lyme disease in dogs can be very debilitating.
e most important tool in the tick-fighting arsenal is prevention. Use a flea and tick preventive treatment -- like a topical ointment or a chewable medication -- to arm your dog in advance of going outside. Oral treatments o en have the added advantage of heartworm medication to prevent this dangerous transmitted disease in dogs from fleas and mosquitoes.
Avoiding the deep woods in summer is one way to reduce the chance of acquiring a tick (or three, or four), but ticks can lurk right in your yard and around the neighborhood. Keep the lawn mowed and brush trimmed back, and remove any debris piles around your property. Vacuum carpets weekly and sweep and mop the floors regularly.
Check Austin every day for ticks, even on days that you don’t go out hiking. It’s not unheard of to miss a tick in a dog’s fur, before it’s latched on to the skin -- and you have a 48-hour window to locate and remove an attached tick before Lyme exposure occurs.
Finally, talk to the vet about whether a Lyme vaccine would be a good choice for your dog.

Balloons Blow
A big THANK YOU to the woman behind my husband and I in line last Saturday for the big craft event. We traveled quite far to attend and were told there was no admission fee and had not brought cash with us. Turns out there was a cash only admission fee and we were told we could enter the grounds to access an ATM and come back and pay. But before we could do so the woman behind us quietly and generously paid for both my husband and my admission as well as for her friend! We thanked her there but it really meant a lot to be given this kindness and wanted to thank her again. Hope she reads this!
I cringe watching another balloon release in memory of a family’s loved one on the news almost every week. Yes, losing a loved one is tragic but balloons don’t just disappear in the heavens, out of sight and out of mind. They come back down to earth, polluting land and water, killing wildlife and causing power outages. Don’t be ignorant; please use other environmentally safe alternatives: blow bubbles, release flowers or petals in water, plant a tree or native flowers, use pinwheels or other stationary decorations. City or Town laws should be put in place to prevent balloon releases.
Billionaires
Team Dominos
On 9/27, I went to a local pizza place with my grand-nephew. Upon entering, the busy staff exclaimed welcoming greetings. Due to time constraints, I had to exit without placing an order! Upon exiting, the team again exclaimed kind farewells. I actually was astounded and wanted to go back in again just to tell them how heartwarming their hospitality impressed me. It restored my faith that “customer care” is still thriving at this local shop. Love the pizza and the offers!!
I can’t understand why people can be proud of being a billionaire or why people admire them. It only proves how selfish they are. If you are a person who really cares about others, you can always find a charity that does good for the deserving, such as charities that help save the lives of children or organizations that find water so people can grow their own food and bathe. There are so many charities that do really good work and help make this planet a better place for all of us to live. You don’t usually accumulate even several million dollars if you truly do your best to share. I grew up in a family that didn’t have much money because my siblings were not the healthiest, but my parents always gave to others who were in need. The world would be a better place if people cared about others and less about accumulating a lot of things they really don’t need.

STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY
Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40.
People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB
Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
