Pet Pride Cat Sanctuary & Adoption Center Expansion Complete
BY JODY LYNN GREER
The Empire State showed it cares for animal shelters. Last November, Governor Hochul included the Companion Animal Capitol Fund in her proposed executive scal budget for 2023. is unprecedented move showed Hochul and the state recognize the capacity strain pet shelters have endured in recent years, and they commit to providing safe housing for abandoned dogs and cats awaiting adoption.
One local shelter, Pet Pride of New York, a no-kill cat sanctuary on Route 251 in Victor, received $200,000 from the Fund to renovate and expand. Pet Pride is the only shelter in our region to receive this generous endowment. is money, with other local philanthropic donations, enables Pet Pride to compassionately care for the vulnerable feline populations in its newly renovated $1.2 million addition that opened to the public on January 21, 2023.
Vice President Marlies Sullivan, says, “We’re a little di erent than most shelters because we have an open enrichment environment. Our cats come out during the day. We have a full surgical and veterinary suite… We have windows everywhere. ese cats can actually go outside and get fresh air and hang out on perches. We purchased some more for our new building. We have six catios now.”
Upon entering the facility, you might be welcomed by Herby, a friendly, black and white, u y tuxedo cat. A er leaving the entrance area, you take Tabby Lane, decorated with pictures of Pet Pride alum. From there, you can enter Kitten Kingdom or peruse the community rooms.
Each room is beautifully lit and spacious. Any cat lover would love to explore Calico Cottage, Catnip Cavanagh, Meow Manner, and Kitten Kingdom. While Kitten Kingdom provides adoptable cats with an enclosed space, other rooms allow cats to roam freely around the building as they interact with visitors and employees. In some rooms, cats can even safely “bird watch” on televisions, entertaining them while harming no birds.
“We are excited about the Healing Paws medical center. We have some vets that are excited about helping us. Vets sign on to do a shi ; it could be once a month. ere’s a lot of veterinarians that like to give back. Giving back to homeless animals is something they’re passionate about.”
Pet Pride of NY also relies heavily upon a network of kind and caring foster families to meet their needs. Sullivan says, “Overcrowding is a huge problem. We have this expansion, but we will still have a long waiting line. ere are a lot of homeless cats and kittens out there, and it doesn’t seem to be getting better. We now spay and neuter early. ere’s still a lot of homeless ones out there. When you start to do the math, it’s very daunting.” e motto of Pet Pride is “Every cat deserves a home,” and thanks to the Companion Animal Capitol Fund and local community donations, they are closer to making that dream a reality. With continued support, they can remove more homeless, abused, and neglected felines from the streets and place them in suitable, loving, forever homes. ere are many ways to support this animal shelter. Pet Pride is always seeking volunteers and donations, whether it be visitors helping socialize the cats to ensure they are adoptable, veterinarians and vet techs helping spay/neuter the cats, and families fostering pregnant momma cats and kittens under eight weeks. Pet Pride also o ers enclosure naming rights to memorialize loved ones.
For more information on Pet Pride and its services, visit petprideny.org or stop by Pet Pride at 7731 Victor Mendon Rd, Victor, NY 14564.
Pet Pride assesses each animal’s temperament and viability for adoption and chooses a space that ts the needs of that cat. Each cat appears lovingly cared for and content. Meticulous thought and detail make this expansion like no other, ensuring felines are as comfortable as possible.
Community support is vital when it comes to caring for shelter animals, and the work is never done. According to Sullivan,

Learn How To Write A Classic Love Letter
Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute.
In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away.
But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note.
• Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter.
• Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years.
• Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work.
• Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and makelovelettersmoremeaningful.Suchdetailsillustratetoasignificant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind.
• Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style.
Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day.

What Various Flowers Can Represent
Flowers are popular come Valentine’s Day. Read on to hear what certain blooms may symbolize…
• Amaryllis: Splendid beauty.
• Aster: Wisdom and devotion.
• Bird of Paradise: Joyfulness and magnificence.
• Carnation: Pride and beauty. Furthermore, the colors of carnations represent different meanings. Red symbolizes love, while pink is for a mother’s love and white represents innocence and pure love.
• Daisy: Innocence and purity are the meanings behind the yellow and white daisy. This can be the perfect pick for new, young love.
• Freesia: Those wanting to evoke passionate feelings can choose freesia, which is also said to mean “joy.”
• Lilac: Tranquility and passion.
• Rose: Of course, no Valentine’s flower roundup would be complete without roses. Roses represent love and passion, and, like carnations, their colors symbolize different things. Red roses represent desire, pink roses suggest happiness and white roses symbolize worthiness. Avoid yellow roses, which suggest fading love.
• Zinnia: Zinnias symbolize thoughts of distant friends and can make a thoughtful friendship arrangement to send to a faraway comrade.

The Right Way To Leave A Job
Take coworkers’ feelings into consideration. Be open and honest with coworkers, but do not gloat that you are leaving the company and they are not. And if anyone has strong feelings about your departure, accept their point of view and do not react outwardly. Take things in stride as much as possible.
