STRANGE BUT TRUE

By Lucie Winborne * The fuller your refrigerator, the more energy-effi cient it is. * Master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock was an ovophobe, or someone who is frightened of eggs. * Children of identical twins are genetically siblings, not cousins. * Australia’s Lake Hillier and Hutt Lagoon are known for their vibrant pink and lilac hues, due to the presence of the algae Dunaliella salina. ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

Host your own welcome party Rather than waiting around for others to welcome you to the neighborhood, take the bull by the horns and introduce yourself to your neighbors in a fun way. Host an open house party and invite your new neighbors. What better way to converse with others than with food, beverages and a festive atmosphere? Plus, your party may lead to reciprocation from others.

Fall is for planting! Why is fall a good time to plant? Fall planting of trees and shrubs offer several advantages over a spring planting. The cooler temperatures are easier on the plants, so there is less chance for them to suffer heat stress. When the air temperatures become cooler than the soil, new top growth slows, allowing the plant to focus their energy on root development. For further information, go to http:// ccelivingstoncounty.org/ What is the best approach to autumn leaves? Don’t skip cleaning up leaves! Thick layers of leaves are slow to decompose and can kill off the grass underneath. Take time to remove fallen leaves this fall to avoid a lawn disaster next spring. Do mow them in place. One of the easiest, low-maintenance ways to deal with fallen leaves is to mow right over them with a lawnmower. Most lawnmowers have a mulching blade that makes it possible to crush and shred the leaves. It’s always best to do this when leaves are dry. Do put them through a leaf shredder. If your mower isn’t set up for mulching, consider a dedicated leaf shredder or a leaf blower with a shredder attachment. In addition, don’t hurt your back by endless raking. Be mindful of posture if you do. Do use leaves as natural mulch for plants and animals. When leaves fall in the woods, they break down and add nutrients to the soil that improve the health of native plants. As with all mulches, make sure you don’t pile the leaves directly against plant and tree trunks.
