TIPS FOR BUYING A TEEN’S FIRST VEHICLE

Financing may not be an option. Teenagers typically have no credit history, so it’s unlikely they will secure automotive loans without a co-signer. Furthermore, teens under the age of 18 may find they are not legally able to sign contracts or have a vehicle title in their name. In such instances, an adult will have to hold the title and ownership until the teen turns 18.

HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WET ROADS

Do not use cruise control. Because fall foliage can be so stunning to experience, many drivers are tempted to use the cruise control feature on their automobiles so they can pay more attention to the array of colors at their disposal. But cruise control should never be engaged when driving on wet roads or roads that may be covered in leaves. Such conditions require drivers to focus their undivided attention on the road ahead of them. When drivers suddenly encounter slick roads, easing off the accelerator rather than quickly applying the brakes can be the safest response, but such a response is impossible whencruisecontrolisengaged.

THE EFFECTS OF INFREQUENT DRIVING ON VEHICLE

PERFORMANCE

Battery loses its charge. The battery in a vehicle is still being used even if the car isn’t running.Batteries power various components in a car, such as the vehicle computer, phone chargers and more. If the engine does not turn over and help to recharge the battery, the battery will eventually die. People who drive infrequently may want to consider a trickle charger that’s plugged in during periods of non-use.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

DID YOU KNOW?

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Determine your motivation for renovating: Renovation projects often involve balancing needs and wants, and determining if a project is a necessity or a luxury can set the timeline and course of the project. Is the roof leaking? If so, immediate action is necessary. Could the kitchen be a bit more functional? If the kitchen is still manageable, a homeowner may be able to wait a little bit to get better prices on appliances or contracting services.

Separating needs from wants helps homeowners map out a viable timeline that maximizes

and affordability.

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION

Get professional advice: Many homeowners are under the impression that doing the work themselves can save a considerable amount of money. This may be the case for homeowners with renovation experience. But by and large, professional contractors are an asset to any renovation. They can provide a realistic overview of the project, map out projected costs, point out areas that could be troublesome, and may have industry contacts that can keep supply costs low. Even if a homeowner will do a portion of the job, a contractor can do the bulk of the work and keep the project on budget.

Endometrial Biopsy Indicated for Woman With Blood in Urine

DEAR DR. ROACH: About three months ago, I bled a bit while urinating. This was the first (and only) time in over 30 years that this happened since I went through menopause. An ultrasound was performed, and they found a mildly thickened endometrium (6.1 mm) with scattered cystic change and without focal lesion.

My gynecologist is suggesting an endometrial biopsy. I am concerned because I have no symptoms other than kidney stones. I’m due to see a urologist, but even with my kidney stones, I have no symptoms. I am 80 and concerned about anesthesia. Should I go ahead with the biopsy? - L.O.

ANSWER: A thickened endometrium is concerning for uterine cancer. The most common symptom of uterine cancer is abnormal uterine bleeding. This usually takes the form of red, pink or brown spotting. However, it sounds like you had blood in your urine, which is more concerning for kidney stones than uterine bleeding.

Your ultrasound is abnormal; 5 mm is the maximum thickness for a normal endometrium. Getting a biopsy is clearly the recommended procedure, as it gives guidance on the next steps. Still, your risk of uterine cancer is small. You do not have to proceed with the biopsy if you do not want to. An endometrial biopsy is an in-office procedure with minimal risk. My textbooks say there is minimal pain, but my patients tell me this isn’t always the case. You don’t have to receive anesthesia; you can take pain medication (such as naproxen), get a local anesthetic, or do both. I’ve had several patients who’ve requested a nerve block and were very happy with their decision. If the biopsy shows cancer of the endometrium, surgery is the preferred treatment, but radiation is also a possibility for some people.

WAYS TO REDUCE BREAST CANCER RISK

Avoid or limit alcohol consumptions. Alcohol increases risk of breast cancer, even in small amounts. For those who drink, no more than one alcoholic drink a day should be the limit. The more a woman drinks, the greater her risk of developing breast cancer, states the Mayo Clinic.

ROUTINE ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS

You may not realize your dentist is checking for signs of oral cancer during your routine checkups. They will look for abnormal sores or discolored patches, feel around the inside of the mouth for lumps, and feel your throat and neck for lumps as well. If a dentist sees anything concerning, they may carry out additional tests in-office or perform a biopsy for testing. Sometimes screening dyes and lights are used to isolate problem areas that may need further investigation. Precancerous lesions can be removed by a dentist or an oral surgeon. While tobacco and heavy alcohol use are the primary risk factors for oral cancer, HPV (human papilloma virus) is thought to be causing increasing incidences of oral cancer.

Because our patients’ total health is always our concern, all new

patient exams are in-depth and comprehensive. This is an important part of establishing a baseline against which we can measure future oral profiles and progress. And regular professional checkups make it possible to watch for developing concerns and address them while they are still small, before they can turn into something more serious. For an appointment for advanced, gentle dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246 at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we’ll give you a reason to smile!

P.S. HPV infections can lead to mouth and throat cancers. The HPV vaccine is routinely given to adolescents starting around age nine, but some adults can get this vaccine too.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved www.bataviafamilydental.com

HOW TO RAKE LEAVES MORE EFFICIENTLY

Remember to rake downwind. It is a good idea to save raking for a day when it is not too breezy; otherwise, you may end up raking the same spots over and over. Handle small spots at one time and rake the leaves into small piles. Then you can easily transfer the leaves to a tarp or bag and set aside for disposal or deposit them into your compost heap.

3 strategies that can lower breast cancer risk

Breast cancer affects millions of individuals each year. e World Cancer Research Fund International reports that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women across the globe, affecting roughly 2.3 million women each year.

Despite the global prevalence of breast cancer, various organizations report high five-year survival rates, particularly among women whose cancers are detected in the earliest stages of the disease. In fact, a 2023 study published in the journal BMJ found that the risk for dying from breast cancer in the five years a er an early-stage diagnosis fell to 5 percent in recent years, a notable improvement from the 14 percent risk of death that was reported in the 1990s.

Increased survival rates for breast cancer are welcome news for women and their families. e higher survival rates are a byproduct of the tireless efforts of cancer researchers, who have also discovered links between the disease and certain lifestyle factors. ough there's no way to eliminate one's risk for breast cancer entirely, the American Cancer Society notes certain variables are within women's control. With that in mind, women can consider these three strategies that can lead to improved overall health and might help women lower their risk for breast cancer as well.

1.

Reach and maintain a healthy weight. e benefits of maintaining a healthy weight include a lower risk for heart disease and stroke, and women should know that weight and breast cancer risk are linked as well. According to the ACS, increased body weight and weight gain as an adult are linked to a higher risk of developing breast cancer. at’s particularly so among post-menopausal women. A 2023 study published in the journal BMC Women’s Health found that the chances of developing breast cancer increase among post-menopausal women who are obese.

2.

Avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise is one of the ways to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, so it makes sense that being physically active can reduce breast cancer risk. e National Cancer Institute reports that a 2016 meta-analysis of 38 cohort studies found that the most physically active women had between a 12 and 21 percent lower risk for breast cancer than women who were the least physically active. e NCI also notes that additional studies have found that women who become more physically active a er menopause also have a lower risk for breast cancer than those who do not.

3.

Limit or eliminate alcohol consumption. e ACS urges women who drink to consume no more than one alcoholic drink per day, noting that consumption of even small amounts of alcohol have been linked to an increased risk for breast cancer. Officials with the MD Anderson Cancer Center note that the link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk is low. However, the MDACC notes that alcohol can contribute to unwanted weight gain, thus increasing cancer risk. In addition, alcohol can increase levels of estrogen and other hormones associated with breast cancer.

It may be impossible to completely prevent breast cancer. However, women can embrace strategies that improve their overall health in ways that lower their risk for breast cancer.

Hometown People

I love reading the Hometown Stories column each week. Learning about local people and organizations doing amazing things makes me thankful to live in such a great community. In an age of increasing technology and weaker personal connections, it's great to know our communities still thrive and bring people together. Thank you to everyone who has been featured on that page and I look forward to learning more about other great folks around town!

I called [national fix it company] to repair a washing machine. First they had a tech come out that said we needed to order a part but that we could get it cheaper online. So we ordered it online and called the company to come back. They replaced the part and the machine was working for a short time and then stopped again. They came back again and said the same part was broken but that it wasn’t covered under warranty since we bought it online. So now we have to buy the same part again and it will take 3 weeks for it to arrive. UGH.

Dockworkers Strike

Greed has already begun. If there’s a shortage of items due to the strike, why do businesses get away with raising prices of items already in stock? Businesses already paid for the items that are staged in their stockrooms. A shortage is one thing, but price increases is price gouging.

* Many more of us are using the reusable fabric shopping bags nowadays. A few cities have banned the use of plastic bags for retail shops. ese bags are much better for the environment, and can hold a lot more groceries per bag. One thing many people forget to do is wash them. You can take out the plastic insert (if there is one) and toss them in the washing machine. Hang to dry and you’re carrying around a much cleaner bag!

HOW TO HELP PETS IN THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICAN HELENE

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m heartbroken seeing the destruction in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina a er Hurricane Helene. ere must be a lot of lost, hungry and suffering pets. I want to fill my truck and trailer with pet food and drive it to where it’s most needed, but I’m not sure where to go. Do you have any advice? -- Maggie in upstate New York

DEAR MAGGIE: It is heartwarming knowing that you and other pet owners want to do something positive for people and their pets in these areas that have been so hard hit.

As I write this, organizations from across the country are getting in place, setting up in strategic locations so that they can distribute aid, assist with rescues and help recover those lost to this storm. With many major highways cut, travel is nearly impossible in North Carolina, and very difficult elsewhere.

e best thing that you can do right now is to stay put. Instead of driving supplies to disaster areas, start a fundraising drive and donate cash to an organization that is actively helping pets and their owners. For example, the ASPCA is working with the Humane Society in Charlotte, North Carolina, to evacuate rescue and foster dogs from Asheville and surrounding areas. e Humane Society of the United States is doing likewise. Both organizations are helping owners with pet food and medical care, and providing shelter to animals without families.

Donating to these major organizations, or selecting a local shelter or rescue group in these areas to support now and in the months to come, will help immensely.

How to Navigate Potential Supply Shortages this Holiday Season

• Shop Local. By mid-spring 2022, congestion at ports on the west coast of the United States had lessened significantly. But the same could not be said for ports on the east coast. Many big box retailers rely on imports to fill their shelves, and that could make it hard for such sellers to deliver items in time for the holiday season. Shopping local and buying items directly off the shelf can ensure no one is given an IOU this holiday season.

• Give Gi Cards. If shipping estimates make it unlikely that gi s will arrive on time for the holiday season, pivot to gi cards. Put the amount of money you would have spent on the item on the card instead.

• Ship Directly to Recipients. It might not offer the same heartwarming charm as handing a loved one a gi in person, but shipping gi s directly to their recipients increases the likelihood that the person will receive the gi by Chanukah or Christmas morning. Many online retailers now offer wrapping at additional cost, and shoppers can splurge and have directly shipped gi s wrapped to add a more traditional feel to gi -giving.

• Give Homemade Gi s. Homemade gi s, whether it’s baked goods or cra s, don’t need to be shipped, so there’s no way such items will spend the holiday season sitting on a ship in a congested port. If you choose to make cra s, decide early what you want create so you can secure all of the necessary supplies in plenty of time to deliver the items during Chanukah or on Christmas morning.

“A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something…” ~

Frank Capra

Did you ever have a hunch…a strong but unexplained feeling that something was going to happen? Most of us have hunches but we probably never think of them as having anything to do with “creativity.”

Whether instinct or intuition, hunches have probably been responsible for some weighty decisions over the centuries. The military genius of Napoleon, the financial wizardry of the Rockefellers…perhaps they were the result of creative hunches that shaped the form of history.

We take pride in providing this community with an essential service, rendered in accordance with the highest ethical standards of our profession.

Survived by: Wife, Betty Cochran; Children, Amy and Jason Berardi, Bridget Cochran, Jeremy and Kristina Cochran; grandchildren, Isabella, Camella, Savannah and Hunter; Brothers, Chauncey, Kevin and Danny Cochran and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. FINANCING FUNERALS

According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

Meet Tyler Stone, the New Owner Bringing Fresh Energy to Salvatore’s Saloon in Scottsville

August 1, 2024, Tyler Stone took the reins at Salvatore’s Saloon in Scottsville, a beloved local establishment known for its cra beer, full bar, and lively atmosphere in addition to great Salvatore’s staples. For nearly a decade, Salvatore’s Saloon has been a hub for live music, sports events, and community gatherings, and under Tyler’s leadership, exciting new changes are here.

Tyler, a long-time Henrietta resident with deep roots in the hospitality industry, is no stranger to running a business. A er working in the grocery trucking and logistics industry for over a decade and finding the long days and weekend hours unfavorable for a father of four young children, he and his wife have owned and managed another local establishment in Henrietta for three years now.

When long-time friend and neighbor, Nick Pearl, owner of the Henrietta Salvatore’s Saloon, expressed interest in downsizing his locations, Tyler initially joked about taking over, but jumped at the chance when Nick seriously offered it. e Stone family now brings his family values and passion for community to Scottsville.

Tyler admits he had never even made a pizza before, so he trained undercover at the Salvatore’s Garage Door location (he shares a big thank you to Ray LoRe on East Ridge Rd.!), learning everything he needed to know to make the great Salvatore’s products. When rumors started to circulate, Tyler worked officially with Nick at the Henrietta shop.

Salvatore’s Saloon had been a staple of the Scottsville community since 2015, drawing shoulder-to-shoulder crowds from miles around for the live music, fun, and great food, but COVID hit it hard. Tyler says he’s excited to build on what made the location so special and to bring the fun back.

Tyler’s vision includes a few key upgrades. Now, Salvatore’s Saloon offers delivery, making the famous pizzas and wings accessible to more people. Tyler even personally delivers pizzas in a vehicle emblazoned with the pink Salvatore’s logo so he can introduce himself to the community. Tyler is reaching out to local schools, legions, and community organizations to introduce himself and get to know the community they now serve.

In addition to delivery, the menu has expanded with new food and drink options. Tyler says, “We’ve brought in a bunch of new liquors and lowered prices to make everything more affordable. It’s important to me that everyone feels welcome when they walk in.”

Salvatore’s Saloon also embraces its role as a town gathering spot. e upstairs private event room is perfect for parties, and local favorites such as karaoke, darts, and live bands are making a strong return. Quick Draw will soon be available as well, he says.

Since taking over, Tyler has made significant improvements to the saloon, streamlining kitchen operations and improving service times. “Ticket times are cut in half and morale is high. Everyone’s happy and getting along, which makes a huge difference for the customers,” he says.

Tyler’s commitment to the community extends beyond the saloon’s walls. Salvatore’s and the Stones sponsor adult sports leagues such as the Rochester Renegades, and Tyler actively supports a variety of local organizations like Stokoe Farms and Rush’s Train Museum.

For Tyler and his wife, Ashley, Salvatore’s Saloon is more than just a business; it’s a family affair. Together with their daughters, Elliana (13), Olivia (12), Nova (7), and Breezie (5), the Stones are proud to now be part of the Scottsville community. “My girls think it’s the coolest thing ever” to own and run a Salvatore’s, Tyler laughs, adding, “Next year, my eldest will turn 14, and she’s so excited to help out.”

Tyler’s long-term goal is to create a family legacy through his businesses. “I want to pass this down to my kids. Eventually, I’d like to own a couple more locations so each of my daughters can have one.”

As Tyler continues to build relationships in Scottsville, he invites locals to stop by, grab a slice, and enjoy the new vibe at Salvatore’s Saloon. “Come make some memories with us. We’re bringing the good vibes, smiles, and endless laughs back to Scottsville.”

Whether you’re a longtime regular or a new face in town, Tyler and the team at Salvatore’s Saloon are ready to welcome you with open arms, delicious food, and great company.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB

Engagement: A job seniors find engaging also is more likely to provide the types of benefits seniors are looking for in post-retirement work. For example, researchers at Boston College’s Sloan Center on Aging and Work found that seniors who find a job or volunteering opportunity truly engaging are more likely to benefit psychologically from those experiences than those whose post-retirement work is not engaging. If seniors find themselves simply going through the motions with their post-retirement work, they can look for opportunities that they can be more enthusiastic about.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE

Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change. Once the idea for a career change has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important.

Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING

Screening is looking for cancer before a person has any symptoms. This can help find cancer at an early stage. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread.

Scientists are trying to better understand which people are more likely to get certain types of cancer. They also study the things we do and the things around us to see if they cause cancer. This information helps doctors recommend who should be screened for cancer, which screening tests should be used, and how often the tests should be done.

It is important to remember that your doctor does not necessarily think you have cancer if he or she suggests a screening test. Screening tests are given when you have no cancer symptoms.

If a screening test result is abnormal, you may need to have more tests done to find out if you have cancer. These are called diagnostic tests.
