CREATE A SALE-WORTHY SHOWPLACE
The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover” can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for prospective buyers. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps.
De-personalize the home. Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items.
Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.
Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on. Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms.
Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones.
Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean.
Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents.
Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES
Safety goggles and glasses are a must-have for any do-it-yourselfer. They will provide a barrier between the eye and flying debris. According to VisionWeb, an eye education resource, most of the 110,000 eye injuries that occur each year in homes within the United States result from splashes with household cleaners, flying debris such as wood chips, or getting hit by branches. Many of these injuries can be prevented by wearing eye protection.

STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE AN APPRAISER’S VISIT
Clean the house. A dirty home that is full of clutter will not make the best impression on appraisers. Dirty homes may be vulnerable to insect infestations that can lead to structural problems with the home. While a dirty home is not necessarily an indicator of infestations or a reflection of a home’s value, a clean home will create a stronger first impression with the appraiser.
GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY
One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS
Take the foreground into consideration. When you find an inspiring landscape to photograph, skip the empty landscapes and think about zeroing in on something interesting in the foreground. This can be a particularly attractive flower in front of a vast field, or even a rusty watering can left out in a row of crops. Items in the foreground impart interest in the photo.

Multiple Myeloma Patients Can Live Longer With Proper Treatment
DEAR DR. ROACH: Can someone have diffuse multiple myeloma with serious symptoms (like bone pain, pale skin, amber-colored urine, constipation, fatigue, insomnia, excessive sweating, and dizziness) and still be alive after four years? -- J.O.
ANSWER: Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer of the bone marrow. The cells in the bone marrow (called plasma cells) stop responding as they should and make large amounts of antibodies. Unfortunately, these antibodies don’t help you fight off infections; they consist of a single clone that usually doesn’t have any discernible activity. What myeloma does do is crowd out the rest of the cells in the bone marrow so that the person can’t make adequate red blood cells (causing pale skin and dizziness), blood-clotting cells (predisposing people to bleeding), and other immune system cells. This puts a person at a high risk for infection. The myeloma cells can get into the bone and cause bone pain. The high metabolic activity can also cause dizziness and sweating, and many cancers cause more nonspecific symptoms like fatigue, insomnia and constipation. Myeloma can also damage the kidney.
Although myeloma is generally considered incurable, new treatments have greatly improved the prognosis. In people with the standard type of myeloma, survival is eight years with the usual treatment. With a stem-cell transplant, survival with average-risk myeloma is over 12 years. Some highly aggressive forms of myeloma have a much worse survival rate.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NERVE INJURIES
What causes peripheral nerve injuries? Johns Hopkins Medicine indicates that peripheral nerve injuries can occur after suffering a laceration (a cut or tear in the nerve tissue), severe bruising, stretching, electrical injury, or drug injection injury. Gunshot wounds also can cause peripheral nerve injuries.
FIXING A VERTICAL ROOT FRACTURE
I don’t have enough information to tell whether you have standard or high-risk myeloma. Your symptoms suggest that your disease isn’t under good control. But the majority of people treated with the best available treatments do live longer than four years.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

A vertical root fracture is a type of cracked tooth where the crack begins at the root and extends upward toward the crown of the tooth. These tooth fractures can be easily overlooked because they don’t often cause symptoms and may not show up on an X-ray. They are more common in teeth that already have a compromised structure from a previous root canal or crown. The only symptom may be mild pain when biting down, until the crack causes an infection in the adjacent bone or gum tissue. The most common treatment for a vertical root fracture is extracting the tooth to save the surrounding tissue from a chronic infection that can compromise the ability to support an implant.
Maintaining a consistent schedule of regular dental checkups will give your dentist the opportunity of keeping an
eye on the state of your teeth and any possible areas of developing dental problems such as a tooth root fracture. When was your last dental visit? Now would be a good time to schedule your next exam. If you don’t have a family dentist, we are accepting new patients at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we welcome your call at 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances.
P.S. Some vertical root fractures can be fixed with a special type of cement that bonds the tooth together to prevent further cracking.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER
Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance. According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength.
SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER
Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.
Avoid idling. Idling was once advised to warm up vehicles so they did not stall once they leave the driveway and hit the open road. However, that stalling occurred when cold carburetors could not get the appropriate mix of air and fuel in the engine. But carburetors have long since been replaced by electronic fuel injection systems, negating the need to warm up a vehicle to avoid stalling. The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy note that modern engines will warm up by being driven and urge drivers to avoid warming up their cars for more than 30 seconds.

Is not this a true autumn day?
Just the still melancholy that I love — that makes life and nature harmonize. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one’s very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a pefect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.
~George Eliot, letter to Miss Lewis, 1st October 1841
With collective bargaining conflicts rising again, this time with talk of strikes and walkouts of dockworkers at dozens of US ports potentially on the horizon, do you think we will face supply chain issues again this year?

It is probably true that very few saintly people got that way entirely as a matter of their own choice. They wanted the approval of their peers (don’t we all?) and so they conducted their lives in a way such as to win approval. They were “flattered” into virtue.
On the other hand, few people have ever been persuaded to give up bad habits by threats…”bullied” out of vice. The moral here, if one may be drawn, is that most of us do what is expected of us. We can best inspire others by having high expectations.
Every adult, who might some day be required to make funeral arrangements, should be fully informed before the need arises. We are here to answer your questions and to offer advice, without obligation.

* Use a turkey baster to "squirt" pancake batter into your frying pan. Mix the batter as normal and unscrew the top of the baster to load. You can use it to make letters for fun kids' breakfasts. No drips!
* If you have trouble opening the lid on glass jars, try using a pair of standard dishwashing gloves. ey work to grip both the lid and the jar. ey work especially well if your hands are the least bit moist. - D.Y. in Pennsylvania

Balloons Blow
A big THANK YOU to the woman behind my husband and I in line last Saturday for the big craft event. We traveled quite far to attend and were told there was no admission fee and had not brought cash with us. Turns out there was a cash only admission fee and we were told we could enter the grounds to access an ATM and come back and pay. But before we could do so the woman behind us quietly and generously paid for both my husband and my admission as well as for her friend! We thanked her there but it really meant a lot to be given this kindness and wanted to thank her again. Hope she reads this!
I cringe watching another balloon release in memory of a family’s loved one on the news almost every week. Yes, losing a loved one is tragic but balloons don’t just disappear in the heavens, out of sight and out of mind. They come back down to earth, polluting land and water, killing wildlife and causing power outages. Don’t be ignorant; please use other environmentally safe alternatives: blow bubbles, release flowers or petals in water, plant a tree or native flowers, use pinwheels or other stationary decorations. City or Town laws should be put in place to prevent balloon releases.
Billionaires
Team Dominos
On 9/27, I went to a local pizza place with my grand-nephew. Upon entering, the busy staff exclaimed welcoming greetings. Due to time constraints, I had to exit without placing an order! Upon exiting, the team again exclaimed kind farewells. I actually was astounded and wanted to go back in again just to tell them how heartwarming their hospitality impressed me. It restored my faith that “customer care” is still thriving at this local shop. Love the pizza and the offers!!
I can’t understand why people can be proud of being a billionaire or why people admire them. It only proves how selfish they are. If you are a person who really cares about others, you can always find a charity that does good for the deserving, such as charities that help save the lives of children or organizations that find water so people can grow their own food and bathe. There are so many charities that do really good work and help make this planet a better place for all of us to live. You don’t usually accumulate even several million dollars if you truly do your best to share. I grew up in a family that didn’t have much money because my siblings were not the healthiest, but my parents always gave to others who were in need. The world would be a better place if people cared about others and less about accumulating a lot of things they really don’t need.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS
Parvovirus: Many dogs come in contact with parvo by touching or ingesting the feces of an infected dog in close quarters. Symptoms include vomiting, weight loss and lethargy. Parvo is highly preventable with a vaccine.

TICKS ARE STILL OUT WELL INTO FALL
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Austin” was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease. He’s responding very well to treatment with antibiotics. Still, I’m wracking my brain as to how he was exposed. I check him for ticks every time we go out hiking, and I’ve never found one. I avoid trails in the deep woods during the summer months, when there’s a lot of brush and ticks are out. What can I do to protect him from another tick bite? -- Zack in Asheville, North Carolina
DEAR ZACK: I’m glad to hear Austin is on the mend! Lyme disease in dogs can be very debilitating.
e most important tool in the tick-fighting arsenal is prevention. Use a flea and tick preventive treatment -- like a topical ointment or a chewable medication -- to arm your dog in advance of going outside. Oral treatments o en have the added advantage of heartworm medication to prevent this dangerous transmitted disease in dogs from fleas and mosquitoes.
Avoiding the deep woods in summer is one way to reduce the chance of acquiring a tick (or three, or four), but ticks can lurk right in your yard and around the neighborhood. Keep the lawn mowed and brush trimmed back, and remove any debris piles around your property. Vacuum carpets weekly and sweep and mop the floors regularly.
Check Austin every day for ticks, even on days that you don’t go out hiking. It’s not unheard of to miss a tick in a dog’s fur, before it’s latched on to the skin -- and you have a 48-hour window to locate and remove an attached tick before Lyme exposure occurs.
Finally, talk to the vet about whether a Lyme vaccine would be a good choice for your dog.

This October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, EMBRACE YOUR SISTERS!
BY SUZIE WELLS
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and charities across Western NY actively encourage women to get screened and be proactive about their health. Susan G. Komen, US’s largest breast cancer organization, estimates 2024 will see nearly 311,000 new (not including recurrent) cases of invasive breast cancer in the US, which means 134 out of every 100,000 women in this country will receive the new diagnosis. ankfully, increased and earlier screening as well as more effective treatments at earlier stages has reduced mortality due to breast cancer, but the cancer still affects so many of us.
e Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester hosts their ACTober 2024 at the Memorial Art Gallery on the 10th and hosts a variety of events and webinars to educate the community, such as at Batavia Downs’ recent Health Fair. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer hosts their walk at Innovative Field in Rochester on the 13th.
Genesee Cancer Assistance of Batavia has many opportunities to connect with the community in support for cancer survivors and their families, with a volleyball game this past week, the Save the Headlights run and raffle on the 5th, and in November they host Night at the Downs. Search online for breast cancer organizations near you, and you’ll find the vast community of agencies helping each other navigate tough diagnoses and move forward.
I was fortunate to interview Krista Jackson of Embrace Your Sisters, a local organization that has become a lifeline for individuals battling breast cancer across thirteen counties in Western NY. She explains that breast cancer not only takes a toll on physical health but also brings about a myriad of emotional and financial challenges for women and their families.
Embrace Your Sisters fills a crucial niche, offering short-term emergency financial assistance to residents of Allegany, Cayuga, Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne, and Yates Counties. e impact of a breast cancer diagnosis is not limited to medical challenges alone; it o en brings about an overwhelming financial burden due to treatment costs and the inability to work. EYS helps alleviate such financial hardships, allowing patients and their families to focus on healing and recovery.
Emergency funds cover co-pays, medical bills, rent/mortgage payments, utilities, and other essential expenses, extending a helping hand towards practical needs, emotional well-being, and other vital services, creating a comprehensive safety net during their arduous battle.
At the heart of Embrace Your Sisters lies an extraordinary story of compassion and determination.
e organization was born out of the experience of its founder, Chrissann Philipson, who faced (and lost in 2016) her own breast cancer diagnosis. Recognizing the financial strain caused by treatment options not covered by insurance, the idea of helping others in similar predicaments ignited. What started as a modest chicken barbecue fundraiser has blossomed into a robust force for good, having raised and disbursed almost half a million dollars to hundreds of survivors. Philipson’s legacy lives on through the organization’s impactful work.
Krista Jackson, a breast cancer survivor of over a decade herself, says the organization is her way to pay it forward, offering support and strength to those navigating the challenges of breast cancer. As a 100% volunteer-driven organization, Jackson emphasizes that every donation directly translates into assistance for those who need it most, making each contribution a tangible step towards easing the burdens of survivors.
Embrace Your Sisters organizes two major fundraising events each year. September 29th was their 13th Annual Positively Pink Walk, and their annual Tea at Two fashion show fundraiser at Casa Larga Vineyard on the first Sunday each May, featuring survivors as models accompanied by their heartwarming stories, raises funds while celebrating the strength and resilience of those affected by breast cancer.
Embrace Your Sisters stands as a testament to the power of community, compassion, and collective action. In a world where breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women, the organization’s unwavering commitment to providing practical support and essential resources shines as a beacon of hope. Whether through financial aid, emotional assistance, or community events, EYS continues to extend its embrace to those fighting the battle against breast cancer, reminding them they are not alone in their journey.

DID YOU KNOW?
Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’sstratosphereabsorbssome of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.
AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS
Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in,it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more.
A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.

THE GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR
According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

It is no joy to me to sit On dreamy summer eves, When silently the timid moon Kisses the sleeping leaves, And all things through the fair hush’d earth
Love, rest—but nothing grieves. Better I like old autumn With his hair toss’d to and fro, Firm striding o’er the stubble fields When the equinoctials blow. ~Dinah Mulock Craik (1826–1887), “October”
