4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them
25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed
4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur
Cardamom Cocoa Sugar
3 green cardamom pods
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper
To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving.
To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cut into very thin slices.
MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY
Serve locally sourced foods. Food is often front and center during the holiday season. Whether hosting family and friends at home, dining out or catering an office party, patronize businesses that sell only locally sourced foods. Locally sourced foods are much more eco-friendly than foods that must be shipped from afar before they land on your dinner table, and such foods tend to taste fresh as well. If serving at home, use reusable dishware and cutlery instead of paper plates and plastic utensils.

HOLIDAY PARTY MUST-HAVES
Decking the halls is a holiday tradition, and hosts should make an effort to string some holiday decorations before welcoming guests into their homes. A Christmas tree might be the most ubiquitous decorative item come the holidays, so hosts can make their tree the centerpiece of their decor. Hang some mistletoe around the house, which also can be adorned with season-specific plants like holly and poinsettias. If kids are attending the party, a kid-friendly decoration station can even be set up to ensure the youngsters have fun and stay busy during the festivities.

BENEFITS OF LED HOLIDAY LIGHTS
Sturdiness: Because they’re made with epoxy lenses and not glass like traditional incandescent bulbs, LED holiday lights are less likely to break. That can be especially beneficial to people with pets who might bump into the family Christmas tree.
COOKING FOR A HOLIDAY CROWD
The more foods you offer, the smaller the portion sizes can be. But because guests will likely want to try all the offerings, expect the average person to consume more food per individual when several foods are offered.
Schedule time to relax. The pressure to feel as if you should always be doing something, whether it’s working, taking care of your family or tackling a to-do list around the house, can contribute to mental fatigue. Schedule time to relax and make a concerted effort to keep that time open. Avoid using scheduled relaxation time to work on household chores or check work emails. Instead, use this time to do something you find genuinely relaxing, even if that activity feels like you’re doing “nothing.”

DID YOU KNOW?
Instances of early-onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in individuals under the age of 65 are on the rise. According to the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Health IndexSM, roughly 131,000 commercially insured Americans between the ages of 30 and 64 were diagnosed with early-onset dementia or Alzheimer’s disease in 2017. That marks a 200 percent increase since 2013. Diagnosis rates among individuals between the ages of 45 and 54 were especially high in 2017 compared to 2013. Within that age group in 2013, 2.7 out of every 100,000 people were diagnosed with early-onset dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. That number rose to 10.9 out of every 100,000 people in 2017, marking a 311 percent increase in just four years.

Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Cardiologist Doesn’t Recommend Over-the-Counter Sleep Aids
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old man in reasonably good health. When I had trouble falling asleep, I would take a swig of Zzzquil, which worked perfectly every time. However, since then, my cardiologist told me to stop taking such products, so I turned to 5-mg tablets of melatonin in the evening to help induce drowsiness. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t.
One night, after I had three beers, I also took two gelcaps of Gas-X to alleviate the bloated feeling just before bed. It was about an hour or so after the melatonin, and I quickly dozed off to sleep. Since then, I noticed that if I awaken in the night and take another Gas-X, I shortly doze off again and have remarkable, complex dreams. Is this self-protocol of mine medically unsound in any way?
ANSWER: There’s a lot going on here. First off, I completely agree with your cardiologist that the sleep aid you were taking, like most over-the-counter sleep aids, contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that sedates some people. The problem with this medicine is that the quality of sleep isn’t good for many people. It also increases the risk of falls in older people and the risk of motor vehicle accidents in people who drive. It’s not a good choice for older adults.
Melatonin is safer and has fewer side effect, one of them being vivid dreams. However, 5 mg is a big dose. I usually recommend 0.5-1 mg in my older patients. Gas-X (simethicone) isn’t absorbed into the body and shouldn’t cause vivid dreams. A search found no reports of abnormal dreams with simethicone, so it was almost certainly the melatonin that caused the dreams. Maybe Gas-X allowed you to sleep while the melatonin was still around enough to give you vivid dreams.
In addition, three beers on a regular basis are more than what is considered healthy for anyone, and a man in his 80s will be affected by three beers much more than a younger man of the same size.
DR. ROACH WRITES: Seven years ago, I went to the emergency room and was told I had blood clots in my arms that traveled to my lungs. I started Eliquis. The doctor said I had a problem with factor V, but I don’t have my blood results. Do I need to stay on this blood thinner? I know it has severe side effects.
ANSWER: Factor V is a protein that is critical in making clots, and an abnormality in this protein can make a person bleed (although this is very rare). What’s more common is a condition called factor V Leiden (FVL), which makes the body resistant to the activated protein C, a natural anticoagulant. (Anticoagulants decrease blood-clotting and are sometimes referred to as “blood thinners.”) So, the net effect of FVL is that it makes blood clots a little more likely. Many people have FVL, but most will not develop a blood clot.
However, you apparently developed blood clots in both arms that caused the clots to move to the lungs, which are called pulmonary emboli. Determining the duration of therapy takes clinical judgment. Because you had clots in your arms rather than your legs, had a pulmonary embolus, and have FVL, some experts would treat you for the rest of your lifetime. I wouldn’t say that Eliquis has severe side effects. Because it reduces blood-clotting, there is a chance of bleeding. For most people with a low to average risk of bleeding, the likelihood is on the order of 1% to 2% per year. If the risk of a life-threatening clot is higher than the risk of bleeding, then continued anticoagulation is preferred.
Dental bonding uses a special material (composite resin) to alter the look, color, or shape of a tooth, and bonds the material to the tooth using a specialized light. While composite resins are often used to fill cavities caused by decay, they are also used to fix chipped or cracked teeth, close spaces between teeth, change a tooth’s shape, protect an exposed root from receding gums, and improve discolored teeth. For some dental procedures, bonding is preferred over crowns and veneers (which provide similar restorations) because it is faster, doesn’t remove enamel, and doesn’t require anesthesia unless it’s used to fill a cavity. Dental bonding is more limited and less durable but provides the best option for fixing certain problems.
Enhance your appearance so you can smile with confidence - call us, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, to explore the many ways today’s cosmetic dentistry procedures can improve your teeth as well as change your life. It starts with a simple phone call to 585.343.4246 to arrange an appointment for bonding, veneers, crowns, or other state-of-the-art dental procedures, performed by a dedicated professional dental team that make 6 Batavia City Centre the ideal place to achieve a captivating smile.
P.S. Dental bonding isn’t as permanent as a crown or veneer and can be removed by the dentist for future work on the tooth.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS
Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.
Oak ield Li hts Up the Holida s
for the 15th Year
The Oakfield Majestic Lights has been lighting up the holidays for 15 years, becoming a cherished tradition for residents and visitors alike. What began as a modest gathering of 10-15 trees in the town park has blossomed into a dazzling community celebration, now housed in Triangle Park, where it brings joy to everyone who drives or walks through the heart of Oakfield.
e idea was first introduced by Perry and Andrea Denton, who had moved to Oakfield from Albany. Inspired by a Christmas tree celebration in their former town, they proposed the idea to Allen Dennis, thenSuperintendent of Oakfield, and to Melissa Haacke, Oakfield’s Town Clerk and administrative assistant to the Highway Superintendent. “We went forward,” Melissa recalls, and though the initial location was convenient, it was not ideal for strolling. A suggestion from the former mayor led to the event’s relocation to Triangle Park, which has become the beloved home of the Majestic Lights ever since.
e event partners with Shetler Tree Farm in Brockport, ensuring a steady supply for the growing number of trees, which reached an impressive 95 last year. “I’d like to hit 100 trees before I retire,” Melissa says.
e true magic of the Majestic Lights lies in the creativity and personal touches of the participants. Many trees are decorated in memory of loved ones, with each ornament telling a unique story. “One person decorates their tree all in purple to represent their loved one,” Melissa shares. Another features ornaments made from shotgun shells, a nod to the loved one’s passion for hunting. Businesses and organizations contribute their own festive flair: the lamb farm uses milk cartons for ornaments, the pharmacy incorporates empty pill bottles, and Farm Fresh First uses fruits and vegetables to create their display. “ ey really do a great job,” Melissa adds, emphasizing the creativity on display.
e event is much more than a visual delight. It’s a community effort sponsored by the Town and Village of Oakfield, with the Highway Department and Department of Public Works playing critical roles. “Without us all working together, we couldn’t do this,” Melissa notes, highlighting the teamwork behind the scenes. Snowy Decembers o en mean highway workers juggle snow-clearing responsibilities with assisting the Majestic Lights program, ensuring everything is ready for the festivities.
BY SUZIE WELLS
Melissa describes it as a festive time when the community comes together to celebrate the season and remember what makes Oakfield special.
Anyone can participate in the Majestic Lights event, whether by purchasing and decorating a tree or by simply enjoying the lights and getting out in the community. Churches, homeschool groups, and local businesses all contribute to the event’s vibrancy, from the living nativity to the cheerful carolers who fill Triangle Park with holiday spirit.
MajesticLightsalsospotlightOakfield’slocalbusinessesandcommunity pride. Explore the town, shop local stores, and immerse yourself in the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Come out for the December 6 festivities, but also enjoy the lights anytime during the season.
In addition to the lights, check out the “Magic Mailbox” at the Community & Government Center, where between November 15 and December 18, children can send letters to Santa and receive a personalized reply, adding a touch of wonder to their holiday season.
Majestic Lights’ success wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of so many people. Coordinators extend gratitude to every tree-decorating participant, as well as the Town and Village of Oakfield, the Town Highway Department, the Village Department of Public Works, and individuals such as Barry Flansburg and Kim Staniszewski.
“ ank you to the people who support the Majestic Lights celebration, walk the park at night, drive through, and everyone going through on foot,” Melissa says. She also gives a heartfelt shout-out to all who brave the cold to help with signs and setup, ensuring every tree is beautifully displayed.
As Oakfield celebrates the Majestic Lights for its 15th year, the event continues to embody the community’s spirit, creativity, and togetherness. It is a time to honor loved ones, create lasting memories, and share the joy of the season with neighbors and visitors alike.
e Majestic Lights officially kicks off with a tree lighting ceremony on December 6. is special evening features caroling, hot cocoa, and a living nativity, with the trees remaining illuminated each night through January 2. e event has become a cherished tradition for families, many of whom pick up and decorate their trees together over anksgiving weekend.

PAW’S CORNER

THE BEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE YOUR PET
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read about a person who did not vaccinate their house cats, and a er one of them got out, lost all of them to feline leukemia. I can relate to this person. I only have one cat, and I thought, for a while, that I could get away without vaccinating her. Fortunately, a friend convinced me otherwise.
It turns out that it doesn’t take much to protect my baby when she depends on me to take care of her. I’ve never gone without just to pay for “Racquel’s” vaccinations, and in turn, she is a healthy cat who brings so much companionship to my life. Please tell your readers not to skip this important annual appointment. -- Donna in Sioux Falls, South Dakota
DEAR DONNA: You told them, and I thank you. Vaccinating indoor pets can seem like a pricey extravagance, but it pales in comparison to the cost of treating the diseases that they can contract if they’re not vaccinated.
To reduce the annual cost, check around for discounted shot clinics. ese are usually held on specific dates and places -- pet supply stores, public buildings or participating veterinary clinics. However, these clinics o en don’t advertise extensively due to costs, so you may need to search a bit. Contact your city or county government to see if any clinics are being held nearby, or stop in to major pet supply retailers like Petco, which o en sponsor shot clinics. If not, their workers o en know about pet health clinics nearby.
ese clinics offer required vaccinations and licenses, and sometimes have microchipping and a basic health exam available at a low fixed price per pet.

Not just on Small Business Saturday...
Nosy
Here’s a shout out to all those small business owners who are going above and beyond to serve their communities. Especially at this time of year we should take the time to patronize the local shops, cafes, breweries and markets. These establishments are what make small towns unique, friendly and the place we’re proud to call home.
This has been on my mind and I need to say it, and I hope you read this: To the woman who called me a "nosy [expletive]," I heard you ask what your balance was on your SNAP, so I instinctively looked as customers in the past have asked the same and I checked for them. You stormed out before I could even explain why I looked at your receipt. If anyone is the [expletive], it's you.

On Nov 14th, my car was towed to the tire place on [local road]. I trusted the tow truck driver to tow it there (1 or 2 miles) and at least lock the vehicle before giving the key to the tire associate. To make a long story short, when the car was fixed and I drove it home, the hatchback had been broken into. My camping canvas bag was missing with a kitchen set of knives worth $100-$200 gone. My insurance papers were missing from the glove compartment.
Never assume a towing company will lock your vehicle. The young man driving told me he had done this for 20 years and knew what he was doing. Really? Locking the car isn't included?

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB
Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.
