Puppy Piddling is a Real Pain

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 6-month-old, medium-size mixed breed dog Jake has a problem I can’t seem to train him out of. Whenever he gets excited, he leaves pee droplets across the oor. Jake is healthy and energetic, and he housetrained quickly. What can I do to stop the piddling? -- Pupper Dad in Ohio

DEAR PUPPER DAD: ere’s a very good chance that it can be resolved. It will take time and training, though.

RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE IN DOGS

What is heat stroke? Dogs suffer from heat stroke when their body temperatures exceed 104 F and the built-in mechanisms they rely on to cool themselves - including panting - cease to function properly. But any temperature 103 F or above is considered abnormal. According to PetMD, heat stroke is a form of non-fever hyperthermia that can lead to multiple organ dysfunction.

Puppies under a year old piddle when they get excited or when they think they’re in trouble. Part of it may be a smaller bladder, but another part of it is what’s called “submissive urination.” Dogs piddle instinctively to signal that you are their superior. However, this isn’t a wild dog pack outdoors; it’s you and your dog and your beautiful hardwood oor.

Punishing or yelling at Jake when he piddles will not solve the problem. e real issue is one of con dence and of nding where he belongs in the household. Most puppies stop piddling at around one year old, especially in a home where there’s a predictable structure, as they mature and settle into their place in the family.

Encourage this during Jake’s rst year by staying calm when he piddles. Yelling or trying to correct on the spot can make the problem worse. Clean up the urine and lead him to a di erent spot, and work on a basic command with him like “sit-stay.”

Try not to pay attention to Jake when you come in the door from work. Ask visitors to look away from him when they come in. Later, when you and your visitors are settled on the sofa, pay attention to Jake with lots of praise. Compassionate Caring Neighborhood Pharmacy

I have been fortunate to be near Meade Square Pharmacy in Victor for eight years. Today I had a dire situation with a medication I was prescribed which I could not use or return. The situation was handled with true compassion and reassurance by the owner.

Thank You

Gotta thank the nice man who gave me the plant at Tops Market in Hamlin. Still growing and looks beautiful. Sorry I didn’t get your name, but thanks again.

Watch Your Children

Parents, please watch your children! From kids walking home alone from school to playing in the park or just shopping. Today I had to call the police because a 10 year old girl was getting bullied by 5 to 6 other kids. Now I sat there awhile minding my own business but when the little girl was pushed and was told to go to the bathroom I already knew. The little girl literally screaming “I don’t wanna fight” and “no.” Now what’s crazy is those kids that were bullying that girl had an adult in the car across the street. What wrong, parents? No matter if your kid is “old enough” to go to the park by themselves you should be present in your child’s life. We live close to the water where people get trafficked the most. I’ve seen it all being a nurse: Kids come in unconscious, assaulted, overdosing, broken body parts from fights and being bullied all cause the parents and the adults are not around and are not paying attention to their kids behavior and actions.

Bad Drivers

Why are so many people driving around believing roads are only for them? Running red lights, not stopping at stop signs, tailgating, speeding etc. For those who believe they’re more important, you’re NOT! To the young ignorant kid today that cut me off, when I had the right away, at the red light you didn’t have the backbone to look over. You’re someday going to experience road rage for your self centered attitude.

Did you know?

Though it can be difficult to accurately gauge the best-selling automobiles of all time, many in the automotive industry acknowledge that the Toyota Corolla, with more than 40million units sold since its introduction in 1966, is the best-selling automobile of all time. While the Corolla may have sold the most units,Ford’sModelTwasthefirst vehicle to reach several notable benchmarks with regard to units sold. Sold from 1908 to 1927, the Model T was the first car to sell one million, five million,10million, and 15 million units. By the time FordceasedproducingtheModel T, the manufacturer had moved roughly 16.5 million units, which many historians credit to the vehicle’s affordability compared to its predecessors. That affordability is largely credited with making automobiles accessible to a mass market. The first car to reach 20 million units sold was the Volkswagen Beetle, the design of which was completed in 1938, though mass production did not begin until afterWorldWarII.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE

Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.

Acclimating To A New Neighborhood

For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate.

Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME

Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxingsanctuary.

There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room.Insulatingproperlywillallow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort.

Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help controlfirebylimitingitsspread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity andpropagationofnoise.

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK

Day camp: Day camps provide much of the structure of school without all the homework or time spent indoors. Many parks and recreation departments run summer day camps for kids. Camps can be generalized or specialized. For example, some may offer an array of activities, including sports and nature walks, in a given day, while others may focus on a single activity, like musical lessons or science-based programs. Camps run by local parks and rec departments do not typically last all summer long, which parents should keep in mind when enrolling youngsters.
