HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES

Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition.

For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

DIETING AND DINING OUT

Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States.

Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course.

Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy.

Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings.

Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit.

Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR PET

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been trying to take a picture of my cat “Jess” all summer long. But every photo looks terrible. Do you have any tips for taking good pictures of pets? -- Taylor H., Taos, New Mexico

DEAR TAYLOR: Patience and practice are your best friends when trying to get a great shot of your pet. Cats aren’t known for their tolerance of sitting in one pose for very long (especially when you’re trying to force them into a pose), and even well-trained dogs can’t stay in place too long.

Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com - Share With Us. Or, Mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS

Ear infections: Dogs that scratch at their ears, continually shake their heads or have an odor in the ear might have ear infections. In such instances, vets will clean, drain and medicate the ear canals.

Send us a photo! and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it! Submit at: or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414.

Study the techniques of good photography; you can look them up online. Composition is more important than the device you’re using -whether an expensive camera or your smartphone.

Incorporate these guidelines into your pet photography:

• Opportunity: Rather than posing your pet, photograph them in their daily lives.

• Eye level: Position the camera lens at the same level as your pet’s eyes, rather than aiming down at them.

• Focus: Make sure your device has a sharp focus on the pet’s eyes. If the auto focus has trouble doing so, try angling slightly to one side so their snout isn’t in the way.

• Natural light: Turn off the auto flash and rely on natural light, like sunlight or a warmly lit room. is keeps pets relaxed and gives a nice glow to the image.

• Background: Pay attention to what’s behind your pet. An unscooped litter box behind Jess will really stand out when you’re reviewing the photos.

• Unusual angles: Play around with different angles and perspectives when photographing your pet. Many won’t work, but you might be surprised at the ones that look amazing. Most important, have fun!

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS

The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with

The Season was waning to its close. The gardens showed but little of the ravages of autumn as yet. The noble avenues of trees were still in their glory of fulness and expansive verdure; although here and there a few fallen leaves seemed to have fluttered down to earth as premature heralds of decay. The later flowers were gorgeous in their many-coloured splendour, though their earlier sisters had already lived the best of their lives, and now drooped their heads, as if to hide their blighted charms.

~J. Palgrave Simpson, For Ever and Never, 1884, wording slightly altered

How to Navigate Potential Supply Shortages this Holiday Season

• Shop Local. By mid-spring 2022, congestion at ports on the west coast of the United States had lessened significantly. But the same could not be said for ports on the east coast. Many big box retailers rely on imports to fill their shelves, and that could make it hard for such sellers to deliver items in time for the holiday season. Shopping local and buying items directly off the shelf can ensure no one is given an IOU this holiday season.

• Give Gi Cards. If shipping estimates make it unlikely that gi s will arrive on time for the holiday season, pivot to gi cards. Put the amount of money you would have spent on the item on the card instead.

• Ship Directly to Recipients. It might not offer the same heartwarming charm as handing a loved one a gi in person, but shipping gi s directly to their recipients increases the likelihood that the person will receive the gi by Chanukah or Christmas morning. Many online retailers now offer wrapping at additional cost, and shoppers can splurge and have directly shipped gi s wrapped to add a more traditional feel to gi -giving.

• Give Homemade Gi s. Homemade gi s, whether it’s baked goods or cra s, don’t need to be shipped, so there’s no way such items will spend the holiday season sitting on a ship in a congested port. If you choose to make cra s, decide early what you want create so you can secure all of the necessary supplies in plenty of time to deliver the items during Chanukah or on Christmas morning.

VENT

An thankful veteran

Rude man

A special thank you to the individual who noticed I was a veteran and paid for my breakfast at McDonald’s in Lakeville last Saturday. Much appreciated.

The Avon Garden Club Cheers to this long-standing club that makes our circle park so beautiful each and every year!

Thanks to all the great teachers! With the start of school and the anxieties of new surroundings, activities, and friends, it’s encouraging to see so many teachers display kindness and patience with our kids. Some people are quick to blame and judge, while the day to day encouragment that teachers dole out goes unnoticed. Please know that we parents and grandparents see you and appreciate you.

To the elderly man who verbally accosted me in the [local store] parking lot for leaving my shopping cart in a striped area in front of the handicapped space he was pulling into. I’ve read where handicapped people like the easier access to carts left there. Two older women were taking one of the carts left there to use. Think twice before berating someone you don’t know. I fell last year and tore my rotator cuff and then fell again last night in my basement and was in a lot of pain after shopping and loading my groceries into my trunk. I am eightyyears-old and a widow. What do you plan to do with the picture you took of my license plate?

Speak English

“This building has reached the end of its useful purpose” or “those with food insecurities.” Why do we have to change simple terms? How about, “this building is getting old, it needs remodeling?” How about, “people who struggle to put food on their tables?” Do speakers believe changing a term, like those examples, make them sound more intelligent? Simple, everyday terminology works better for all.

A GUIDE TO BUYING PRE-OWNED VEHICLES

Exercise caution with private sellers. Buying from a private seller is a bit riskier than utilizing a dealership. That’s because the due diligence falls on you as the buyer. Ask for a vehicle history report (commonly known as the CARFAX®) for any vehicle you’re considering, even if it means paying for the report. The report will list any accidents and other red flags. If a seller refuses to offer the report, pass on the deal.

HOW TO FIND A CAR THAT FITS YOUR BUDGET

Wait it out - Those with the luxury of time may continue to wait for inventory to increase and prices to decrease. Tech experts, including Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, expect chip shortages to persist into 2024. If a person’s vehicle is in good condition, it may be more economical to hold on to it a little longer and do the maintenance required.

ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY

Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion.

Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem.

Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield.

Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly.

Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEING IN NATURE

Nature and overall well-being - Given the aforementioned health benefits related to spending time in nature, it’s easy for even non-scientists to conclude that being outdoors has a profound impact on overall well-being. But non-scientists can rest assured that recent research has confirmed such conclusions. A 2019 study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that individuals who spent at least 120 minutes a week in nature were significantly more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who spent less time outdoors. Though the authors of the study cautioned that the exposure-response relationship was under-researched, and therefore likely needed to be studied more extensively, in the meantime individuals, after a consultation with their physicians and confirmation that it’s safe to get out more often, can aspire to spend at least 120 minutes in nature each week. The results may speak for themselves.

COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES

Tooth damage: Dental caries, or cavities, can cause toothache, as can tooth abscesses and tooth fractures.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

How to Recognize Normal Versus High Blood Pressure

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been confused about what normal blood pressure is for me (or anyone). I know there is some debate on what normal is today, but let us say that normal is 120/80 mm Hg. Does this mean that 110/90 mm Hg, 130/70 mm Hg, or 150/50 mm Hg is also normal? Is there any significance of the ratio between systolic and diastolic blood pressure? -- L.P.

ANSWER: Because so many people have high blood pressure, and the consequences of untreated or poorly treated high blood pressure include a risk for heart attacks and strokes, it’s critically important to understand this thoroughly.

For a young, healthy person, the lower the blood pressure, the lower the risk of blood vessel damage that leads to these dreaded complications of heart attack and stroke. I routinely see people with blood pressures of 90/60 mm Hg who are just fine (although they are a bit more likely to faint).

But for middle-aged and older people, we define blood pressure as normal when the systolic (first or top number) pressure is less than 120 mm Hg and the diastolic (the second or bottom number) is less than 80 mm Hg. Elevated blood pressure is when the systolic pressure is between 120-129 mm Hg and the diastolic pressure is less than 80 mm Hg. It’s considered hypertension when the systolic number is 130 mm Hg or greater, or the diastolic number is 80 mm Hg or greater.

So, all of the readings you proposed are hypertension -not just elevated blood pressure.

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES

Stay away from pollen. Stay away from pollen and prevent it from being tracked indoors. Remove shoes when walking through the door. Take off clothes worn outside and launder them promptly, showering to wash pollen off of the body. Use an air conditioner or keep windows closed when the pollen count is high.

Of course, the higher the reading (in general), the higher the risk of damage to the blood vessels and, after some years, the higher the risk of heart attacks or strokes. It’s not the ratio of the systolic and diastolic numbers that is of interest; it’s the difference between them (also called the pulse pressure). So, with the numbers you gave, the pulse pressures are 20, 60 and 100 mm Hg. Independent of blood pressure levels, a higher pulse pressure confers additional risk to the person, mostly because very stiff blood vessels cause a high pulse pressure. Different types of blood pressure medicines affect pulse pressure differently.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

PROBIOTICS FOR HEALTHY TEETH AND GUMS

Our mouths are full of both good and bad bacteria. When these bacteria are in balance, they keep each other in check. But many factors can lead to the overgrowth of bad bacteria in your mouth, including poor oral hygiene habits, a weakened immune system, genetic predisposition, and dry mouth. This imbalance prevents white blood cells from killing harmful bacteria. The bacteria cause inflammation, which produces chemicals that feed the bad bacteria and eventually begin to affect the bone that anchors your teeth. Bad bacteria also cause tooth decay, bad breath, oral cancers, and can spread infection to other parts of the body. Probiotics help balance the good and bad bacteria in your mouth.

In addition to including probiotics in your diet, we have lots of good ideas

on how to help keep your mouth a healthy one. Because we understand that conscientious dental care is a crucial part of overall health, we strongly believe that one of the most important services we render our patients is a plan for preventive care. Along with daily brushing and flossing, one crucial tool to your good dental health is regular professional care. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is located at 6 Batavia City Centre; call us at 585.343.4246.

P.S. Probiotics are found in cultured foods like yogurt, fermented foods like sauerkraut, and over-the-counter supplements.

Move your feet as you rake so your arms and back are not doing all of the work. Think of it as dragging the leaves more so than just shuffling them around. The more leaves you can gather in one pass of the rake, the more quickly the job will go.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRIVING VACATION:

Share the driving. Know your driving limits and share driving duties with someone else who can take over if or when fatigue sets in.

The music of the far-away summer flutters around the Autumn seeking its former nest.

~Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds

Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

Aprils have never meant much to me, autumns seem that season of beginning, spring.... I thought of the future, and spoke of the past.

Building a Community Playground: Northgate Free Methodist Church’s Gift to Batavia

Over the past three years, Northgate Free Methodist Church (FMC) in Batavia has been working on a project that will leave a lasting impact on the local community: a new playground designed to be a place of joy, imagination, and connection for children and families. Led by the Northgate leadership team, with former Director of Operations Mark Logan playing a pivotal role until his retirement on August 1, the playground is the culmination of community effort, professional expertise, and heartfelt donations.

Northgate’s Operations Director, Allison Lang, says all the work and planning couldn’t have been possible without the volunteers, many from both the church and the community. Some of them were able to contribute their professional skills, while others simply donated time and energy. Together, they’ve turned this vision into reality.

e project, however, isn’t just a space for kids to play. It’s a thoughtfully designed rustic playground, inspired by other similar builds in the region, aimed to promote outdoor play while engaging children’s imaginations in a safe, natural environment. Here, joy, community, and a sense of connection between children and community members abound.

e playground serves as a tangible expression of Northgate’s missiontocreatespaceswheretheloveofJesuscanbefeltandshared. Whether families attend Northgate or not, they are welcomed to enjoy the space. Lang adds, “By providing a tangible expression of love and care for children, the project embodies Northgate’s values of being relational, caring and intergenerational.”

Abovetheentrancetotheplayground, asignreads“YesuAkunda Abana,” which translates to “Jesus Loves the Children.” e first part is written in Kinyarwanda, the native language of Northgate’s Connected Community in Gahanda, Rwanda. e Northgate community cherishes its connection with their Rwandan brothers and sisters, and Lang explains that they honor that connection with this playground.

e response from the Batavia community so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Families have expressed gratitude for a place where their children can play safely, while also appreciating the sense of togetherness the playground fosters.

Moving forward, Northgate plans to enhance the space with covered seating areas, benches, and shade trees to make it even more family-friendly.

“ isplaygroundisjustonestepinfosteringdeeperconnections within our community,” Lang emphasized, “Our goal is to foster connections within the community among families. We want this space to be inviting for all, whether or not you attend Northgate.”

Inadditiontotheplayground,Northgateoffersothercommunity spaces for recreation and reflection. A Prayer Walk trail meanders through the woods behind the church and playground, providing a serene environment for quiet contemplation and appreciation of nature. ere’s also a nine-hole disc golf course that’s open to the public and popular with both locals and travelers. Both the trail and disc golf course are available for use during daylight hours, offering additional ways for the community to enjoy the outdoors.

Lang reflects on the deeper meaning of these spaces: “ e playground, prayer walk, and disc golf are more than just places to play; they are symbols of our shared humanity and the possible connections we can make locally and across the world.”

With the completion of the playground, Northgate FMC hopes to continue serving as a hub for families, children, and community members to come together. Lang says Northgate has “been placed in this community for a reason. We know it is our privilege to serve those who live near us.” Northgate invites everyone in Batavia and beyond to visit, and Lang says, “We’d love for people to explore what Northgate has to offer, whether you’re here to play, pray, or simply enjoy the outdoors.”

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE

Allow employees to telecommute. Based on an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey conducted by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, a typical business would save $11,000 per person per year if it allowed its employees to work from home just half the time. Those cost-savings can be traced to numerous factors, and lower utility costs in the office as well as the need for less office space are among them.
