NEW YEAR, NEW AIRLINE CAREER. Get FAA approved certification at campuses coast to coast. Job placement assistance. Financial Aid for qualifying students. Call AIM 888-686-1704
Students explore interests and career options in new workshop series Fifth-and-sixth-graders at Churchville-Chili Middle School have a unique opportunity this year to explore educational and career areas they are interested in and meet community experts in those fields. Students can choose from monthly workshops on topics like Renewable Energy, Electronics and Programming, Engineering, Theatre and Drama, Government, GPS/Orienteering/Geocaching, Nanotechnology and Public Safety. The Career Exploration Workshop series kicked off on November 24 with guest speakers and hands-on experiences in Agriculture and Food Science. Students visited guest experts at six education stations. Bob King, Laura Penman and Suzanne Long from Monroe Community College explained how to tell which part of the plant is used for food, and the difference between fruits and vegetables. Greg Sharpe from Genesee Community College demonstrated the importance of sanitation in food preparation. Registered dietician Rachel Schur helped students measure the amount of sugar in a variety of different drinks; Ted Miller, from Worm Power, revealed the secrets of worm composting and fertilizer; and local farmer Kim Zuber showed students sheep’s wool in all of its stages from raw, just-sheared to yarn. A favorite station was run by fellow middle school student and aspiring chef Noah Jenkins, who introduced his audience to simple, healthy cooking and home food preparation.
Chef Noah Jenkins shows students an easy, healthy recipe they can make at home.
Fifth-graders learn about worm casings from expert Ted Miller from Worm Power
Student feedback was enthusiastic: “I loved learning about all the different stations! It was a great two hours and I’m glad I got to do this.” “I really liked the cucumbers at the cooking station. Also, I really liked bringing home some wool from the wool station. I loved joking around at the worm station and my group had a lot of fun. I think this was a great experience and I would love to do it again!” Upcoming workshops will be held on the last Tuesday of each month. Community experts interested in participating as guest speakers are invited to contact program coordinators Andrea Lynch (alynch@cccsd.org) or Patti Saucke (psaucke@cccsd.org).
Registered dietician Rachel Schur works with students to discover the hidden sugar in everyday drinks.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
SIMPLE FIX FOR CROOKED TEETH When teeth are crooked, chipped, or overlapping, individuals may hesitate or even forego visiting the dentist or orthodontist in the belief that treatment would be too expensive. The fact is, however, that damaged and outof-position teeth can often be remedied without orthodontic treatment, veneers, or crowns. The cosmetic technique known as “tooth reshaping and contouring” is a minimally invasive, relatively inexpensive procedure that involves removal of a small bit of tooth enamel in order to alter the length, shape, or position of teeth. The treated teeth are then polished for a smooth finish. Tooth reshaping and contouring is most often used on the upper front incisors and canines, but may also be employed to correct bite imbalances involving the molars.
Feel free to contact us with any questions about correcting crooked teeth or to schedule a consultation. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we believe it is our responsibility to share our acquired knowledge and understanding of oral health with each and every patient. Our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246 to schedule your next dental checkup. Let us help you keep that winning smile. We accept most insurance. P.S. Tooth reshaping and contouring can be used to give teeth a more feminine or masculine shape simply by rounding or squaring their edges.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had hot flashes, similar to those experienced by post-menopausal women, ever since my coronary bypass in 1990. I can be sitting quietly in a chair reading or at my computer, and suddenly I find myself dripping with perspiration. I also have had panic attacks, with increased heart rate and other physical symptoms. A few years ago, a 24-hour EKG showed heartrhythm irregularities and that my heart stopped briefly while asleep. If these idiosyncrasies of my autonomic nervous system are a consequence of my time on the heart-lung machine for the bypass, I’m not complaining -- just curious. You said that studies have been done on almost everything. Is this one? -- W.S.B. ANSWER: I found that a lot of people complain of similar symptoms. I also found that indeed, the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that regulates temperature, sweat, blood pressure and many other critical aspects of body function without our being consciously aware of it) can be adversely affected by cardiac surgery. Some authors have suggested that the autonomic nervous system changes are one mechanism by which people are more likely to have depression after cardiac surgery. I found several possible explanations why the ANS changes with bypass surgery, but no clear consensus. I would want to be sure that there are no other causes of these symptoms. It sounds like you have had an extensive evaluation, but I certainly would be concerned about a sudden fast heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart rhythm disturbances in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered a long time with GERD. I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous disease. My doctor recommended a procedure called a Nissen fundoplication. Since the procedure, I have not had heartburn again. I would do it again, after what I went through. I get an endoscopy every two years to keep an eye on my disease. -- G.D.B. ANSWER: Barrett’s esophagus is a complication of longstanding reflux. It is diagnosed when the lining of the esophagus starts to look like the lining of the stomach. Barrett’s esophagus can progress to cancer of the esophagus. About 0.2 percent of those with Barrett’s per year will develop cancer, which sounds low, but if you live with the condition for 25 years, that’s about a 5 percent risk. Surgery for reflux disease is done only rarely. However, it is very effective (85 percent to 90 percent). The most common reason to consider surgery is inadequate relief from medications and lifestyle changes. However, severe erosions from acid in the esophagus, inability to take medications, a stricture (partial closure) of the esophagus and Barrett’s esophagus are all reasons to consider surgery. Surgery appears to reduce the risk of cancer more than other treatments.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. D id you k now ? Digging into a delicious ice cream sundae can be heavenly on a w arm day. But such decadence sometime s comes w ith a price, most often in the form of a painful ice cream headache. Ice cream headaches occu r w hen the cold ice cream moves across the roof of the mouth and back of the throat. Scientists are not qui te certain w hat causes ice cream headaches, but some suggest that it involves cold ice cream temporarily alteri ng blood flow. This constriction and expansion of blood vessels can cause pain. Once the body adapts to the c hange in temperature, the pain should subside. Eating ice cream slow ly can help prevent ice cream headaches.

Resale value may not be foremost on the minds of new car ow ners, but the earlier buyers begin to factor resale value into their carcare routines, the more they w ill benefit dow n the road.
To help consumers choose a repair shop that fits their needs, ASE offers the following checklist: * Look for a neat, wellorganized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to your own and modern equipment in the service bays. * Look for a courteous staff, with a service consultant willing to answer all of your questions. * Look for policies regarding estimated repair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and acceptable methods of payment. * Ask if the repair facility specializes or if it usually handles your type of repair work. * Look for signs of professionalism in the customer service area, such as civic, community, or customer service awards. * Look for evidence of qualified technicians: trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced course work, and certification by ASE. * Look for the ASE sign or logo; it means the shop employs nationally certified technicians. www.ase.com for seasonal car care advice and more. Today’s auto manufacturers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instances, roof racks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

Your Preparing for hospice care Sometimes patients succumb to a disease, in spite of the best treatments and support. When the time comes for a family to confront a loved one’s declining health, hospice care can be a dignified way to make that person’s final days as comforting as possible. Hospice is a type of care designed to make the final moments of a person’s life as pain-free and manageable as possible. It can take place in a medical facility, but very often hospice care occurs at home or wherever the ill person feels most comfortable. Hospice care is usually the last step when all other options have been exhausted. Making the decision to move a loved one to hospice care can be an emotionally wrenching time. Decisions such as these may be better made at a time in a person’s life when he or she is not sick. That is why living wills that spell out details for end-of-life care can be quite valuable. Decisions are made with a level head and not wrought with emotions. Such living wills also can take the pressure off of family members who may not feel comfortable making such decisions on their own or in concert with relatives. Hospice is a type of care and a philosophy that focuses on the palliative care of terminally ill patients. Rather than providing medication to try to treat the illness, medicine is offered to make a person more comfortable and remove any pain. Psychological therapy may also be offered to help the person come to terms with the end of life. Although hospice is a concept that has gradually evolved since the 11th century, the principles of modern hospice care can trace their roots to the 1950s and Dame Cicely Saunders, a nurse and social worker who is known as the creator of the hospice movement. If hospice care is outlined in a dying person’s living will or expressed wishes, there are some guidelines that can be followed by the sick individual. • Visit various medical care centers to see if away-fromhome options provide the care and environment you desire. Be sure to establish what type of hospice care you prefer. This may
Aging Well With Exercise You can get better and stronger at any age. Research shows that an appropriate exercise program can improve your muscle strength and flexibility as you age. Progressive resistance training, where muscles are exercised against resistance that gets more difficult as strength improves, has been shown to help prevent frailty. Your bones want you to exercise. Osteoporosis, or weak bones, affects more than half of Americans over the age of 54. Exercises that keep you on your feet, like walking, jogging or dancing, and exercises using resistance such as weight lifting, can improve bone strength or reduce bone loss.
include care within a nursing home or hospital, or in the comfort of your own home. • Sign a medical durable power of attorney. This signed document gives authority to an adult age 18 or older, who then has the right to make necessary medical and healthcare decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated. • Clearly indicate your wishes regarding resuscitation. A signed document may alert emergency healthcare personnel or others of your wishes not to be resuscitated. This document must be signed by you and a doctor and witnessed by others. • Decide on the duration of care. Hospice care generally lasts six months. This enables a long stretch of palliative care. Should you live beyond the time period, hospice care can continue. Studies have shown that patients who receive hospice care for at least 30 to 60 days gain greater benefit than those who are placed in hospice only in their final days. • Investigate financial options for hospice. Medicare and Medicaid provide hospice coverage in 44 states. Many private insurance plans have a hospice benefit as well. Understand how payment is made to figure out if private funding will be necessary. Not all hospice programs are the same. Certain core models of care are followed by many hospice facilities, but options vary. Hospice can provide comfort in a person’s final days and help sufferers better enjoy life and time spent with loved ones in these last days.

* Put A Lid On It: Get to know the best way to cook up your favorite foods. Traditional grilling foods - small steaks, burgers, chicken, fish - do best over direct heat (fire directly under the food), while thicker meats like roasts, brisket or pork shoulder benefit most from indirect heat (fire off to the side). No matter which way you’re cooking, it’s always best to keep the grill lid down - and don’t peek too much! Heat escapes every time you open the lid.

The Memorial Day Detachment # 468 of the Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who participated in the Toys For Tots campaign for 2015. We appreciate the organizations and businesses who participated as drop off points and the generosity of everyone in Ontario and Livingston Counties who donated toys. We were able to collect and distribute 4,000 toys through our participating agencies. A lot of children had a great Christmas because of all of you. Thank you and we look forward to 2016. On Monday, December 29th I was in Denny’s in Batavia alone having breakfast. I am a widow of 20 years plus and dine alone quite often, and across from

me a beautiful family were also having breakfast. A husband and wife and I assume their daughter who had 2 beautiful well behaved twin daughters. They left before I did; they glanced over and gave me a nice smile. After they left the waitress came over and told me they had paid for my breakfast. I don’t know if they are local or just passing through. I just want to say Thank You to them. I will pass it on. A Grateful Senior Citizen The residents of Lakeville Estates want to give a huge THANK YOU to all the local merchants who were so generous with their donations of gift cards and merchandise to use as door prizes at our Community Christmas Party. Gratefully Yours, Residents of Lakeville Estates Hats off to Caledonia Mayor Debbie Davis for securing a third grant for the culverts on Mill Street. As a tax payer it’s encouraging to see our federal & state tax dollars put back into our community & not always others. Keep up the good work!!!

Wall Decor - While family photos are one of the easiest, cheapest ways to customize your wall art, sometimes a room cries out for an eye-catching canvas wrapped print. Home decor stores can yield some acceptable options, but for a bigger selection - and reasonable costs - head over to www.canvasyourway.com. The same folks who pioneered the concept of custom wallpaper murals now offer millions of image options online that you can customize in several different sizes. Perhaps you need a cityscape to add just the right touch of sophistication to a living room and haven’t been able to find it in local stores. Canvas Your Way has hundreds to choose from or you can make a custom canvas print by uploading your own image. With so many options, it’s possible to find exactly what you’re looking for at a reasonable price without the worry that you’ll ever see a similar piece in someone else’s home.

FREE Like Mother, Like Daughter (Family Features) Moms do more than pass on their genes to their daughters. They have a powerful influence as role models for their daughters’ physical activity, dieting behaviors, body image and self-esteem, according to a panel of experts at the Role Modeling Health Legacy Summit, hosted by the National Milk Mustache got milk?® Campaign and Family Circle magazine. Key findings from the Summit include moms’ influence on: • Nutritious Eating: Studies show that a mother’s decision to drink milk more frequently and to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains helps influence her daughter’s choices. In particular, research suggests that moms who drink milk are likely to have daughters who drink milk. This influence has been shown throughout childhood, but the impact appears to be the strongest in the early years of her daughter’s life. “The bottom line is that if a mother wants her daughter to eat nutritious foods, drink milk instead of sugary sodas and avoid fad diets, she needs to do the same,” according to panel member Liz Ward, RD, child nutrition expert and author of “Healthy Foods, Healthy Kids.” • Physical Activity: “Mothers can also play a positive role in influencing their daughters’ activity level - both by explicit modeling of behavior and logistical or tangible support, such as providing transportation to activities,” said panel member and pediatrician Alanna Levine, MD. Providing this support may be especially important for young girls who do not perceive themselves as being athletic. • Dieting Behaviors: Mothers may unknowingly pass on poor body image and weight worries to their daughters. Studies have found that weight-related issues of parents, particularly mothers, are transmitted to their children. • Body Image and Self Esteem: Research shows that early awareness of body weight is associated with a low self-worth in girls as young as 5 years of age. Concerns about weight can affect a child’s self-esteem and wellbeing. Adolescent girls who perceive that their mother is frequently trying to lose weight are more likely to be preoccupied with weight themselves and more likely to become constant dieters.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.
“Children are educated by what the grown-up is, rather than by his talk…”
~ Carl Gustav Jung It is all too easy to send children off to school and feel we are doing all we can by simply seeing to it that the kids are not tardy. Jung, a Swiss psychologist of the early 20th century, reminds us that a good example is worth more than great quantities of conversation. Parents, as well as teachers, should be aware that their attitudes and actions toward life and toward learning, are the most powerful influence on young lives, and be guided accordingly. We are keenly aware of our responsibility to serve families in immediate need. We also assist those who desire to pre-arrange their own services, well in advance of need. Feel free to ask for our advice and counsel…without any obligation.
